These are the questions people with perfectionistic tendencies ruminate over, oftentimes without definitive answers. In this incredibly informative and insightful interview, we expand upon our original episode on perfectionism (S2E3) with a top expert, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen, who recently released her second book “How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists.” In this conversation, we discuss the nuances of identifying perfectionistic tendencies, how perfectionism manifests across different contexts, what therapy for perfectionism looks like, and stories that bring this important topic to light. S4 E3: Understanding Childhood Bullying w/Drs. Melissa Holt and Jennifer Greif Green

Bullying is a term that has become commonly used as a part of conversations among young people and their peers both in real life and online. In the past few decades there has been an uptick in recognizing, researching, and naming bullying in public and private sectors while striving to support those who have been impacted by the aggressive behaviors related to bullying and peer victimization. This is especially prevalent in schools as the CDC currently reports that 1 in 5 teenagers report being bullied in school and 1 in 6 teenagers report being bullied online. That percentage increases when we discuss students who are a minority in their community. Most schools will report that they have some kind of anti-bullying precedent or curriculum, but repeated perpetrations and the damage caused by such behaviors still remains. Episode 3 of Season 4 provides a very nuanced and detailed discussion about the topic of childhood bullying. In this episode, Jerry and I are joined by Boston University professors and bullying prevention experts, Melissa Holt, Ph.D and Jennifer Greif Green, Ph.D. Topics discussed include clarifying what bullying is and is not, what contributes to kids bullying their peers, how bullying could affect an individual, and how we can help children who are involved in bullying either as a perpetrator or a target. Drs. Holt and Green were Jerry's mentors during his time at BU during his doctoral training and this episode is a testament to their work together as it comes full circle in the discussion of bullying research.Be curious. Season 4 is all about connection - connection with others, connection with something outside of yourself, and connection with yourself. To start off the new season, Jerry and Alexis were thrilled to have critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, Hayley Reardon, join us in studio to talk about her connection with song - writing songs, producing original music, and sharing her songs in performances. Hayley takes us on her musical journey, starting at a young age growing up in a north shore coastal town of Massachusetts. We discuss the experiences that inspire songs, the creative process that Hayley goes through when developing a song, and what it's like to share her creations with others on stage and with the world. Raised in a coastal Massachusetts town north of Boston, Hayley Reardon is a critically acclaimed folk-pop singer and songwriter. She is a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. Her songs serve as postcards from an artist brave enough to take the road less traveled. Reardon dove head first into music at the young age of 15, and has spent much of the past decade writing, recording, and performing music around the world. Reardon's songs have been featured on multiple Spotify editorial playlists and Apple Music playlists, with over 7 million streams on Apple Music alone. She has shared the stage with renowned artists including Lori McKenna, Rodney Crowell, and Anaïs (ah-niiice) Mitchell, among others. She spent three years based in Nashville and much of the past six years carrying her songs and stories all over the globe — including a six-month artist-in-residency stay in Dachau, Germany — gathering experiences, inspiration and soulful connections. Her most recent profound EP's, In the Good Light and Changes, were recorded in Barcelona with Catalan collaborators Pau Figueres (producer and one of Spain's premiere instrumentalists) and Aniol Bestit Collellimir (recording engineer). Visit www.HayleyReardon.com for a full bio, photos, tour info, and links to her music. How do we get started with finding the most effective and helpful mental health treatment for our children? In this episode, Gerald and Alexis are joined by Dr. David Langer from Suffolk University to discuss a more collaborative approach to understand and begin a wellness journey through therapy.Dr. Langer Clinical specializes in child and adolescent psychology; treatment efficacy and effectiveness; psychosocial treatment process; child and adolescent psychopathology; personalizing treatment planning; shared decision-making.He explores questions of how do we help children and families when a child is anxious or depressed? More specifically, how do we identify which treatments are the most likely to be effective for anxiety, depression, or any other mental health issue (treatment effectiveness); figure out how those treatments work (treatment process); and adapt treatments to fit the needs, preferences, and values of individual families (treatment personalization)?Dr. Langer's research, in collaboration with students and colleagues, explores the efficacy and effectiveness of psychosocial treatments for youth psychopathology and the processes through which psychosocial treatments work. With funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, he is currently developing novel approaches to personalize psychosocial treatments for youth by supporting active collaboration between clinicians and families throughout the treatment planning process (i.e., shared decision-making). Of the many practices and processes to investigate, focusing on treatment planning is highly promising because: 1) the treatment planning process is relevant across disorders and other presenting problems across the lifespan, and 2) improved treatment planning provides an opportunity, at the start of treatment, to address treatment-related issues which have been important to the field of clinical child and adolescent psychology for decades (e.g., utilization of evidence-based treatments, patient engagement in clinical services). The ReidConnect-Ed Podcast is hosted by Alexis Reid and Dr. Gerald Reid, produced by Cyber Sound Studios, and original music is written and recorded by Gerald Reid.*Please note that different practitioners may have different opinions- this is our perspective and is intended to educate you on what may be possible.Be curious.
