The last picture that Karu has of her father alive is on the day of her graduation. She has this big smile that by the placing of her dimples makes it obvious that she is his daughter. He stands next to her holding her waist in the space between his biceps and his lower arm. Unfortunately, what most people with a penis expect their sex lives to look like can often be misaligned from what they are experiencing. It's completely normal, at times, for someone to experience difficulties in their sexual response, including not really wanting sex or perhaps not getting an erection when they want one. My guest today is a professor of urology and the Head of Department of Urology at Dr George Mukhari Academic hospital and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Pretoria South Africa, Shingai Mutambirwa. Shingai and I had a very honest and real discussion about what those with a penis can experience sexually and why you've got to give yourself a break and place less pressure on yourself in how you expect your sexual experience to look like. Content warning: two brief mentions of suicide, in the context of having lost friends..Thanks for listening! Attention Engineer is a show where I seek to make the best use of my own valuable time and attention by having deep conversations with fellow artists about creativity, grit and determination. My aim is to consistently remind you - and remind myself - that creativity really is for everyone….because it really is. Let's kick that inner critic where it hurts!.About my guest: Shingai Shoniwa is the legendary front woman and bassist from the Noisettes. Dubbed “The new afrofuturist pop goddess” by Rolling Stone, her debut solo album “Too Bold” was released in October 2020 and marks a new chapter of her journey. This sonic odyssey through an effervescent soundscape fearlessly infused with a soulful yet spontaneous spirit is the sound inspired by Shingai's London, Bantu and Zimbabwean heritage..In this episode, we discuss making music that's a movement, too, the importance of creativity in a happy household, and how music helped Shingai navigate a childhood packed with grief, stepping off the major label conveyor belt and making music against the odds as an independent artist with integrity and the detrimental effect of social media and influencer culture on everyday creativity..About your host: I'm Laura Kidd, a music producer and solo artist releasing music as Penfriend. Will we “undo” or “solve” climate change? Could we still create a livable world if the answer to the previous question is no? Could we create an even more just world than the one we’ve been living in so far? This week we step away from thinking about climate change at the planetary scale and reflect on how we can respond at the community level with guest Gopal Dayaneni. Gopal reminds us to think about the climate crisis as a message in which we are being asked to respond by tending to our all of relationships, not just reducing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide. In this exploration of crisis, solutions, distribution of suffering, and relations - we learn about the power of changing our relationship to a problem. Gopal has been involved in fighting for social, economic, environmental, and racial justice through organizing & campaigning, teaching, writing, speaking, and direct action since the late 1980s. Gopal is a co-founder of Movement Generation: Justice and Ecology Project. Currently, Gopal supports movement building through his work with organizations including The Climate Justice Alliance, ETCgroup, and the Center for Story-based Strategy. Gopal works at the intersection of ecology, economy, and empire. He lives in an intentional community of 9 adults and a squabble of kids. Music by Skeppet, Shingai, and Yesol. You’ll know her as the vocalist and bassist of UK indie rock band Noisettes, but with her new song and music video, Too Bold (taken from the album of the same name), Shingai shows that she is truly a force to be reckoned with. The singer-songwriter explains the themes and iconography behind the song’s powerful music video, and why it’s a testament to pivotal elements of the past and a celebration of sisterhood.

This deep dive with the musical icon Shingai Shoniwa is very special. In moment's it feels like channeling and other times it’s a call to courage. Shingai walks with her ancestors in heart and music, she grounds this truth beautifully by expressing ‘’I’ve got voices in me, I’ve got people behind me that I have to honour. Whether I like it or not. If you don't honour your ancestors my personal belief is you're not really honouring yourself.’’ The lessons and wisdom in this episode are liberating and uplifting. If you have not listened to Upcycle and Recycle your pain with Shingai, please listen to that episode first! - This is the bonus AND continuation. This episode was recorded before International Women’s Day, so the video for Too Bold is out now - you can watch it here Follow Shingai here The hashtag for the Too Bold Challenge is #TooBoldChallange A way of being free - By Ben Okri Here This episode was Hosted and Produced by Emilyne Mondo

After Eight Show - Music That You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else!
The After Eight Show goes out on 15 different radio stations in 5 countries and we now have over 10,000 followers on Twitter. This week, as always, we have masses of #NewMusic in our playlist! An eclectic mix of original, intelligent, melodic, grown-up songs - #electronic, #rnb, #jazz, #blues and #acoustic. And mostly from artists who you have not heard of - yet! Think 'next series of Jools' - that's the kind of artists that we play. Our Luvva Cover feature, this week, is a dramatic reworking of the last song Elvis Presley ever sang in public. It was the one he almost always chose to close his live shows. The cover version is by the highly successful film and TV composer Tommee Profitt featuring the brilliant vocalist Brooke. Their version begins as a beautiful, haunting love song and then builds to an exciting, cinematic climax. Give it a listen and tell us what you think! New Music You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else! This Episode is dedicated to my dear friend Alex Horsford whom the world lost tragically in 2016. We’ll always love you and we’ll never forget you bro. #AlexForever. In 2009 I picked up a gig as a morning DJ at a radio station on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. My daily sidekick was Alex Horsford. Alex was a little over 10 years younger than I was. However he had an interest in photography, film.. really all things media. He was also the younger brother of one of my best friends. Alex had just finished high school and was awaiting answers from job applications. He decided to join me on air every morning. We had tons of fun and really added something new to the airwaves on the island. On an island whose radio stations played primarily soca, calypso and reggae, we decided to cater to the persons who wanted something different in their mornings. We played soft rock, pop, zouk, groovy soca, commercial dancehall, 80s and pop music. Generally, I would pick the playlists. One day Alex told me that there was a song that he wanted me to play on air. This was a rare request from him. He said that a friend of his in the UK had introduced him to the song. We didn’t have the record, so I looked it up on youtube, ran the computer’s audio through the system and played it on air. The song was “Never forget you” by a group called the Noisettes.I had never heard of the Noisettes. However, from the moment I discovered them, I indeed would never forget them. I was smitten. From that day we played that song over and over on air. With Alex’s passing, the song came to mean even more to me. Over the years, I continued to follow the band’s lead singer, Shingai Shinowa, and her work. It was always a dream to interview her. I added her to my wish list for this podcast. I had no connections to her within my network. The likelihood of an interview was near zero. One night I took the chance. Why not I said to myself…. And so I began… Hello Shingai. I trust that this message greets you well…To my surprise she responded directing me to the appropriate email address and even added that she was looking forward to my invitation for the interview. Needless to say, I was ecstatic!Shingai Shinowa has a voice that you indeed can never forget. She was born and raised in London. Her parents are from Zimbabwe. She carries her family’s roots, culture and legacy boldly, proudly and most importantly unapologetically. No matter what she has accomplished, she remains down to earth and as centered as ever. With undeniable talent, striking beauty and an incredible work ethic Shingai continues to win. She recently released her debut album, “Too Bold”. A wonderful collection of sounds that in my estimation encompass the many parts that make up Shingai and her extraordinary journey through life. I had the pleasure of speaking with herThis is the story… Thus far… Of Shingai Shoniwa.
Singer songwriter Shingai Shoniwa delves into her liberating musical journey into becoming a solo artist. Once the lead singer of the Noisettes, Shingai shares difficult moments she faced in the music industry and touches on the treatment of black artists. Reflecting back on a song that she started writing at the age of sixteen, Shingai draws similarities to the girl she once was, but also shares why being bold became one of her best lessons from growing up. Kabi finds my body swinging. I watch my sister press her back against the wall and slide to the ground. My mother shouts, “Kabi! Nyokabi!” No response. “Why are you not answering? Can you bring that brother of yours!” My sister is paralyzed, she cannot speak, she cannot move, except for the shivers that take hold of her spine and reverberate through the rest of her without permission. She is thinking No, no, no, no, no. But the word is not passing her lips which only open and close soundlessly. Mum is coming down the stairs. | Copyright 2020 by Shingai Njeri Kagunda. Ahead of the release of solo album 'Too Bold', Shingai tells Jim Drury about the new record and the many highlights of her career, both in The Noisettes and as a lone artist. Shingai also reveals how the exploitation of black female singers by the music industry riles her, how she performed weekly online concerts with her family during lockdown, and why she is optimistic about the future for entertainment, despite its current travails.

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, we took our foot off the pedal and coasted down the chill road. No good taste was harmed or compromised during the recording of this show, with our mixtape (can we a call a playlist that?) featuring the likes of Good Dog from Glasgow, Gorillaz, John and Jehn, Courting, Muse, Shingai, a brilliant cover by acclaimed guitarist Antoine Dufour. We also celebrated our own stripped-down little version of Glastonbury festival, which was slated to happen the past weekend had everything been normal, with some artists who had a strong start on the BBC Introducing stage! We played Gaffa Tape Sandy, Palm Honey and Arlo Parks. Gaffa Tape Sandy's Glastonbury BBC Introducing performance can be found on their Bandcamp here. This week's masala chai, this show's regular feature where we play music from outside the UK, was more of a honied tea, keeping with the chillwave theme. We played Atlanta, GA's Night Beach, Travis Bretzer from Edmonton, Tokyo based delightful dreampop band Cattle, and France's janglepop band Pale Spectres. Come for the pun, stay for the music. CFRC's Yellow Brit Road brings you your weekly fix of British music every Sunday evening at 8 PM. We talk British music, and its rich and exciting history, and then some! Listen live on your dial at 101.9 FM in the Kingston area, or on cfrc.ca, Sundays 8 to 9 PM! (Full shows are available in the archive for 3 months from release) Just a quick note, many of these artists have profiles on Bandcamp, one of the leading sites working to ensure artists get paid fairly for the music they make that is getting us through lockdown. With live gigs, one of their only sources of income, being largely out of question for the year, do consider buying their music and merchandise from there if you can instead of streaming, which has a very disadvantaged payout particularly for smaller, independent artists, who are the backbone of an indie show on a community radio station like ours, without whom this show could not exist. John and Jehn's And We Run can be heard here. As an added bonus, here's a lovely acoustic session the band performed in 2010 for Soup Kitchen. The playlist for the show can be found here.
This week I'm joined by the incredible Shingai Shoniwa! This is a bit of a fan girl moment for me as I'm such a huge fan of The Noisettes and her solo material! We have a waffle about the music industry, her journey to becoming the incredible artist that she is and of course her upcoming album. Make sure you check out her new single War Drums available everywhere now!
Dressed in her lucky vintage waterproof by French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, British singer-songwriter Shingai is adding the final touches to her new single "War Drums". The former member of the pop-soul group Noisettes has a message. She believes the current Covid-19 crisis provides an exciting opportunity to transform society. But how? As unlikely as it sounds, haircare could be a good place to start. FRANCE 24 finds out more.
In the first episode in our Music Culture series, we chat to Shingai (frontwoman of Noisettes and multi-talented creative) and Ryan Koriya, an extremely hard working and passionate musical entrepreneur. The two artists have proud Zimbabwean heritage, and have just collaborated on the first Zim film to hit Netflix - quite a moment. Ryan has done the score, and Noisettes music features in the movie - with Shingai playing a cool cameo (as herself..!). Furthermore, we are excited to be the first publication to play Shingai's upcoming new single, 'War Drums', which is out on Monday (May 18th). It's got soul, plenty of rhythm, and sounds... well, like only Shingai can. Enjoy!
Music Life this week sees British jazz saxophonist, MC, and poet Soweto Kinch host Shingai Shoniwa, Eno Williams, and Barney Artist. Singer and bassist Shingai Shoniwa is formerly of the band The Noisettes. The name Shingai, according to Wikipedia, means "bold/courageous/strong" in the Shona language. Eno Williams is the lead vocalist in the electronic funk band Ibibio Sound Machine. She was born in London but spent most of her childhood in Nigeria where her family spoke Ibibio, the native language of the Ibibio people in Akwa Ibom Staten. And our final guest is Barney Artist, a London rapper, who’s worked with George The Poet, Tom Misch, and Jordan Rakai. Soweto is a Mercury prize nominated / MOBO winning artist who’s been championed by Mos Def and Rodney P and has supported the likes of KRS ONE, Dwele, and TY. He’s also the nicest guy in music. Together they explore themes in music that revolve around family and its influence, the idea of homecoming and identity, and the importance of language.
In this podcast, I speak to Shingai George, a dedicated AviaDev Ambassador and technology enthusiast. We discuss how new technologies such as blockchain, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence will change the aviation industry, which could be even more prevalent in a post COVID-19 world. You can connect with Shingai here
Stance interrogates what Belonging means through tattoo art, literature, music and journalism as Chrystal Genesis is joined by guest editor, author, journalist, Artistic Director and CEO of The Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Hannah Azieb Pool. We explore the theme of Belonging through the lens of people of the African diaspora. In this original and eye-opening episode, SHINGAI tells us about her new record Ancient Futures, we catch up with journalistic giant Gary Younge as he leaves The Guardian for Manchester University and we talk tattoos with artists Jessica Horn and Laurence Sessou. Their new visual arts project The Temple of Her Skin examines the stories and aesthetics around African women and their tattooing journeys. In our Belonging feature, we speak to author Maaza Mengiste about her new novel, The Shadow King, which tells the story of female strength and is set during Benito Mussolini’s 1935 invasion of Ethiopia. And finally, we profile fashion powerhouse Duro Olowu to find out more about his background, pioneering womenswear label and his new exhibition at the Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago called Duro Olowu: Seeing Chicago.
