Sherine Ebadi, a PhD Candidate in the UC Berkeley Department of Geography, researches the impact of Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) and employment-based visa programs on Afghan nationals who worked with the U.S. military. Sherine Tadros is an Emmy nominated journalist turned human rights activist, who has just released her powerful new memoir Taking Sides. The book follows her journey through journalism, reporting for Al Jazeera English and Sky News as their Middle East correspondent. In this conversation with Kathy Sheridan, Tadros reflects on a gruelling 79 days spent trapped inside the Gaza strip and a terrifying sexual assault she experienced while reporting on the downfall of the Egyptian regime. She also explains why she eventually left broadcast journalism to take up a job with Amnesty International, in an effort to not only expose injustice, but to fight it. Hosted on Acast. Taking Sides: A Memoir about Love, War, and Changing the World (Scribe, 2023) is a personal memoir by Sherine Tadros, the United Nations Representative and Deputy Director of Advocacy for Amnesty International. An award-winning broadcast journalist and war correspondent for Sky News and Al Jazeera English, where she reported on the Gaza War, the Arab Spring, and rise of the Islamic State, Tadros decided in 2016 to leave journalism for human rights activism after concluding that her reporting work “ended up at the wrong point”. In this wide-ranging interview she talks about overcoming discrimination as an Egyptian-British “halfie”, a woman, and an immigrant, the importance and limits of being an acclaimed war correspondent, the duty she feels to fight for the rights of others and why individual action makes a difference. Nicholas Bequelin is a human rights professional with a PhD in history and a scholarly bent. He has worked about 20 years for Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, most recently as Regional director for Asia. He's currently a Visiting Scholar and Lecturer at Yale Law School. Twin sisters Sherine and Zan Abeyratne made a huge impression on the Australian pop scene in the 1980s. Individually, they were members of two of the most innovative, era-defining bands to emerge locally that decade: Big Pig and I'm Talking. In this episode, the siblings look back on their time in those groups, whose sound pushed Australian music out of its pub rock comfort zone, and talk about singles like "Hungry Town", "Breakaway" and "Holy Word". They also discuss their work — both separately and together — as in-demand backing singers, with credits on hits by INXS, Kids In The Kitchen and Models. We also hear what it was like to be part of the local industry at a time when women were making their presence felt and breaking down barriers in what was once a boys' club. In our extensive interview, Sherine and Zan also reflect on the less commercially successful moments in their careers and reveal what they are up to now.
Regardless of how big your disbelief in God is, it won't faze sister Sherine. God has been dealing with sister Sherine for a good while before she hop on the truth of God train. She worked in the police force in a dangerous time and city in Jamaica. She has been shot at, and used to play with the gun while on duty to the point where she would pull the trigger under her chin while the gun was on safety. One shift, her police partner told her to take the gun off safety so she can be ready for whatever, whenever. Out of all the shifts she played with the gun on safety, she did not play with it on that particular night that her police partner told her to take it off of safety. Anything could've happened if she decided to play with it. So many members on the police force died but God had mercy upon sister Sherine and she is convinced that no one can tell her that God is not REAL. I give God thanks for his grace and mercy because he is constantly giving the chance to live and get right with him. If you are living today, it is not because of any good that you have done, or because you are the ''chosen one'', or because of your good looks but it is simply because God is giving you an opportunity to get right with him. Do not take it for granted because one of these days can be your last. Keep Sister Sherine in prayer so that she can continue to strive to and hold on to God's unchanging hand.

Sherine Salib, MD, MRCP, FACP, is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the, Director of Undergraduate Medical Education in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Salib attended medical school at The University of Bristol in England and went on to become a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Dr. Salib completed her residency in internal medicine from the University of Texas Houston Health Sciences Center. She has had several publications in journals including Academic Medicine and British Medical Journal. She takes special interest in writing about innovative educational endeavors and the medical humanities, as well as developing workshops and curricula for residents and students. Dr. Salib has received many awards and honors for her contributions as a clinician and an educator. According to Dr. Sherine Salib, there are only three things you need to be an excellent physician: Great attitude, best effort, and curiosity. Today, Dr. Salib breaks down what each of those traits mean to her, and how we can bring these qualities to our work each day. She talks about reframing ‘work life balance' into ‘work life integration', and how finding our joy in work will positively influence our personal life, and vice versa. And lastly, she talks about leadership. Everybody is a leader. And the best leaders, according to Dr. Salib, are the ones who know how to combine leadership approaches that will best suit each situation. The best leaders are ones who know how to serve others, and to take care of those in their charge. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Reframe ‘work life balance' as ‘work life integration.” Find the type of work that gives you joy and purpose in life, and that you want to wake up for each day. 2. Look for mentorship outside just your field in medicine. Seek guidance from people who have a different perspective and look for innovative ideas to act as a bridge for positive exchange across fields. 3. Attitude, best effort, and curiosity are the three most important traits of a successful trainee. 4. Everybody is a leader. Whether you have that official title or not, you are a leader in what you do. In order to excel as leaders, we need to combine various approaches, and know how to serve others; and take care of those in our charge.
