Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen This week we start off with some discussion of the Video Game Trailer show… which really should just call itself that because the “Awards” thing feels like an afterthought at this point. Bel is excited for Witcher 4 and Dispatch, and Ash's favorite game of all time is finally getting a Sequel. We also are curious what sort of game Intergalactic is going to end up being and sure hope it is not a soulslike. From there Bel talks about softening his thoughts about Path of Exile II as he is probably a day out of getting to maps. Kodra and Tam however have become significantly less charitable than last week. We also talk a bit about Caves of Qud which has actually launched now. Then Ammo and Tam share their glowing praise of the new Indiana Jones game from Machine Games. While it technically is a stealth game, it is also a fascist punching simulator with quirky oneliners which is also great. Topics Discussed: The Game Awards 2024 Lots of Trailers, Few Awards The Death of ESports Path of Exile II - One Week In Caves of Qud Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
With Rob (still) out, Papa Bear returns (again). Patrick, Cado, and Austin recorded this ahead of The Game Awards, which helps explain three hours of talking (extensively) about board games, Cado and Austin attending (but not meeting up at) PAX Unplugged, an unhealthy obsession over (opening packs in) Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, a small amount of Eagles talk, a slightly bigger amount of New Waypoint talk, and more. Plus, Patrick's been playing (and loving) Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, while Austin's got thoughts on Mouthwashing and IndikaDiscussed: Let me tell you about Netrunner 2:08, PAX Unplugged 26:46, Pokemon Card Game Pocket 49:01, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle 1:25:10, Mouthwashing 1:48:35, Indika 1:53:56, Caves of Qud 2:03:51, The Question Bucket 2:0813See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week we're surprised that 1) Indiana Jones: The Great Circle is great, and 2) that other people agree, plus we talk about the likely juggernaut of Marvel Rivals, the questionable scrutability of Caves of Qud, how to install a bunch of programs at once on a new windows install, the difference between LG's C4 and G4 tvs, and plenty more. REAL LIFE Devon is dealing with a sick family and Ben is wiped, despite finally having a chance to rest. Ben has been covering for his boss and teaching a beginning HTML class to kids. Most of the kids are awesome but some are “chaos gremlins.” Ben also just drove to Burback and back for a roller derby tournament. Ben had to be the father to 15 kids. Ben's wife had to stay home for work and to take care of a geriatric cat. For Steven this was conference week so his kids got off school early. He forced them to play outside with the extra time. Steven's kids have been “bruh-ing.” Steven has jumped back into Caves and Qud. (https://www.cavesofqud.com/). It's a fantastic, weird, fun game. Steven is reading Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer, which is… interesting. Steven also built a Lego Nano Gauntlet. FUTURE OR NOW First up, Mothership RPG (check it out here), the award-winning sci-fi horror game where surviving outer space is just the beginning. With streamlined character creation and easy session prep, it's perfect for both new and experienced players. Steven's even offering to run a game for our listeners—join our Discord if you're in! Next, Ben explores a breakthrough in carbon capture with UC Berkeley's COF-999 powder, which removes CO2 from the air at record rates and promises a more energy-efficient future. Read about it here. Lastly, Devon dives into panpsychism, the philosophical idea that consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe. Hear his take, complete with debates from thinkers like Sean Carroll and Philip Goff. Want to learn more? Check out the Wikipedia entry or this intriguing Mind Chat video. BOOK CLUB Renee has been watching Prodigy. We mention needing to discuss the new episodes of Lower Decks and the short film Unification. The High Test by Fredrik Pohl (1983) Originally published in Asimov Science Fiction Magazine. A story of a man working as a driving instructor on a distant planet. He's actually a flight instructor teaching humans and aliens how to fly their spaceships. A cozy slice of life according to Ben. According to Devon the story felt like a product of the 50s despite being written in the 80s. Was the inspiration for this story: what if an alien needed to pass a driving test before attempting to destroy humans? Next Week Big Oxygen by exurb1a

In the first installment of a new Into the Depths series, we dive into the brilliant Caves of Qud. This sprawling open-world roguelike has been in development since 2007 and Early Access since 2015, and we're celebrating it as it nears a v1.0 release. Doug and Rob, together with guest host and Qud-head Jack Schlesinger (Puzzmo, Knotwords, Good Sudoku), talk to Caves of Qud creators Brian Bucklew and Jason Grinblat all about post-apocalyptic worldbuilding, building an emergence-focused game engine, and what it takes to keep a project and partnership going for nearly two decades. Don't forget to join our discord and play along with the series. Try to get a character to Level 5 before our next episode, where we'll get into some basics around the early game and Qud's many interlocking systems. You can purchase Caves of Qud -- still in Early Access, for now -- on Steam or GOG.
