In the span of a few weeks I had THREE people say, I'm thinking of becoming a podcast editor and it had been years since I talked to Mark and Steve back on episode  752 .  That was back when they had just launched the Podcast Editor Academy which is an amazing resource with tutorials on software (Hindenburg, Reaper, etc) but it also talks about the business of being a podcaster editor. Now they have 8000 people in their Facebook group, and now are helping all podcasters at a special event at Podcast Movement before revamping the academy.  Focusrite: The Vocaster Series Made For Podcasters AutoGain – Easily set your levels with the click of a button, with more than enough gain on tap (70dB) – no booster needed Enhance – Four podcaster-approved voice presets bring out the best in any voice Mute – Silence the mic with the touch of a button – don't let unexpected interruptions get in the way of recording Connect your phone – Record phone calls, high quality music, or other audio from your device, seamlessly Record to a camera – Plug in your camera and record directly to its memory card Loopback – Stream calls or any other audio you can think of from your computer with two sets of stereo loopback Included software – Hindenburg Lite to record, three months of SquadCast Pro + Video to bring in your guests, and six months of Acast Influencer to publish, you're ready to get your show out there Learn more at: Focusrite.com/Vocaster  Charging Guests to Appear On Your Show A recent Bloomberg Article about guests paying to be on podcasts (and we mention the importance of disclosing this information).  The site mentions Guestio which (if you wanted) you could have people pay $5 just to pitch you (that might scale back some of the bogus pitches).  While I'm not a huge fan of this strategy (I feel it is a slippery slope) if you decide to charge, and always disclose that you were paid to have someone on your show, have at it. Apple vs Spotify Redux

Who's bigger? Spotify or Apple?  Well, both....Welcome in to episode 100 of this season of the Jag Show Podcast. Spotify says it's now bigger than Apple in terms of users.  That's from their Q3 numbers.  As always, Tom Webster from Edison Research has a great explainer on this. (Full disclosure: Spotify and Apple are both Edison clients). Webster says that more users prefer Spotify, but Apple still leads the pack in total downloads.https://tomwebster.media/the-crux-of-the-kurfuffle/ Bottom line, use whichever one you like.  I tried going back to Apple after they worked out their bugs, but found I personally liked Spotify's user interface better.  Your mileage may vary.Another battle in podcasting that's heating up is automated transcriptions.  As Amazon makes a big push into the space, they've begun transcribing some of their bigger shows.  If that gets rolled out to all shows, that could make Amazon a bigger player in the podcasting space.  Here's their press release, via PodNews: https://podnews.net/press-release/amazon-music-transcriptsPodcast production house Pineapple Street Media is looking for paid interns for the first half of 2022.  If you want to get into the space, this could be a great opportunity.  Radio people are you listening? I said PAID internships. https://pineapple.fm/internshipAs expected, podcast ad revenue is exploding in 2021, still rising after the initial pandemic boost of 2021. Magellan AI has a deep dive into ad revenue, but the key takeaways are podcast ad spending is up 87% year over year, and 22% since just Q2.  You can download their Q3 full report here: https://www.magellan.ai/resources/reports/q3-podcast-advertising-benchmark-reportHow much can you charge advertisers on your show, and when can you start?  Advertisecast has rates starting at 1,000 listeners per episode.  Rates have gone up in 2021.  For a 30 second ad, it's $18 CPM, so $18 for every thousand listeners you have.  For a 60 second ad, it's $25 CPM.   They also have a cool interactive calculator to figure out your spend, or maybe what you can charge. https://www.advertisecast.com/podcast-advertising-ratesMeanwhile, we'll find out Friday what the going rates are for podcast editing.  Steve Stewart and Mark Deal of the Podcast Editor's Club do an annual survey of their members to figure out average rates and more information.  They will show their results on Friday at 5pm Eastern, in the Podcast Editor's Club and on YouTube.  https://www.podcasteditoracademy.com/2021surveyAnd finally, I still don't understand Facebook's podcast rollout.  I listened to the New Media Show's interview with two Facebook employees, and still don't have much clarification - except that you can connect a show to a page, not a personal profile and not a group.  And it will only show up on mobile, not desktop.     It looks like last week's Jag Show Podcast showed up, with the show notes as a huge glob of text, with the audio under it.   If you have a moment, cruise on over to Jag in Detroit Podcasts on your Facebook mobile app, and let me know what you see.  Until next week, stay healthy and stay safe. Website Link: https://jagindetroit.com/shownotesAre Show Notes Important?  YES!  Your show notes are important to the success of your podcast. Why Show Notes Are Important:Google Search is still one of the top ways people find podcasts. And, at least for now, Google can't search audio - it can only search text.   So if you write show notes with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in mind, you can get help your ranking in Google Search.   Think about your title, and how that relates to questions, ideas, or guests that your potential audience is Googling.  There are a number of SEO tools out there (some free, some paid) that can help you with all of this.I have to take a moment and credit Steve Stewart and Mark Deal for putting on the Podcast Show Notes summit this past Saturday.  They had eight incredible panelists explaining all things show notes in detail.  You can watch the replay for $99 at http://shownotessummit.com/Also a tip from Rob Walch of Libsyn: if your show notes are on the longer side, put any key links at the TOP, not the bottom.  Some podcast players will only display the beginning of your notes.  If you've got something important, put it at the front.Did Joe Rogan's Move to Spotify Hurt His Guests? One other point on the importance of searchability - since Joe Rogan became a Spotify exclusive and full episodes are no longer on Apple, Google, and YouTube - it appears the social media "bump" his guests normally get is waning.  I just Googled Joe Rogan podcast - best I could get was his website, where I had to hunt for the show.   Now, I'm not gonna say Joe Rogan was wrong to say yes when Spotify backed the Brinks truck up to his front door.  However, not appearing in search results isn't good for your show.Who Is Listening to Podcasts?More data out from Westwood One again proves that the typical podcast listener is- are you listening, advertisers? -  young, employed, educated, and upscale.   https://www.westwoodone.com/2021/08/30/the-westwood-one-2021-audioscape-who-are-podcast-listenersNew Tascam Device To Compete with Rodecaster Pro:Tascam, a well respected audio equipment maker, has come out with their own mobile recording studio, the MixCast 4. Podcast editors, have you ever worked your tail off only to realize that you're not actually bringing home the money you expected? Or maybe bringing home nothing at all? It's sooo easy to see that happening. We know, because it sometimes happens to us, too. That's why, as Carol Lynn Rivera shares, it's important to flip the script and implement a framework that is built around the way you naturally want to manage your money and makes it easy to pay yourself first. Listen to DiscoverThe secret to paying yourself first and knowing that you have money set aside for taxes. How traditional accounting makes it easy to pay yourself last. Or not at all. What makes the Profit First methodology different from traditional accounting. The psychology behind why managing your money with five accounts is actually simpler than keeping it all in one place. What to do when Waves, iZotope, Fabfilter, and Plugin Alliance are offering great sales on plugins but you don't have the money in your expense account. Whether you're brand new at running a podcast production business or you've been doing it for years, if you're not satisfied with how your business is paying you, this episode is for you. Crafting a Business Model that Actually Works with Mark Deal —PEM016

“[A business model] forces you to think about certain elements that most other people and processes and things online don’t really talk about, such as your cost structure, activity resources, and how you’re actually going to serve your customers. A lot of [what you hear emphasized] is just marketing funnels, marketing funnels. And I think that misses the broad picture of actually running a sustainable business.” - Mark Deal Whether you’re looking to run your business full time or are a side hustler (perhaps with the dream of full time one day), you need a business plan, a business model and a business map. Creating these crucial guides can be intimidating, but fortunately, aren’t as overwhelming as they sound. You just need to break it down. In this episode of Podcast Editors Mastermind, we’re blessed to have Mark Deal teach us how to break down and fit together the pieces that bring business models to life. Like a puzzle, Mark explains how to intelligently input pieces until your complete picture emerges. And, relax, the puzzle is easy. It only has nine pieces Mark calls blocks. For your first block, Mark advises a simplified value proposition (how you’ll make your money). Number two is fleshing out your customer segment. Once you’re clear on the first two, you evaluate marketing techniques and platforms. Then it’s time to put motion to your value proposition with an outlined activity block. With these all at the ready, you can start taking on customers (or more customers if you jumped right in), and much more, until all nine are in your business puzzle. Feeling anxious about all this? Don’t worry, we’ve captured every minute of Mark’s wisdom about executing these steps and more to structure your business. All you have to do is hit play.   Highlights: Important differences between a business plan and a business model Why even freelancers and side hustlers need a business road map When you should create one and how often you should revise your plan, model and road map The 9 blocks of creating a sustainable business model How your elevator pitch is simply a combination of your value proposition and your customer segment Understanding a customer segment so yours makes sense How to formulate a mission statement that concisely conveys what you do How to choose your marketing channels wisely How to craft a clear activity block Why you must specifically outline customer relationships Why and how to structure an attractive value gap Why partners, strategic relationships and joint ventures can take your business so much further What kinds of costs you need to properly track “I will make you sound less like a crazy wingbat.” Thanks for the quote, Mark Deal! (Watch for the T-shirt - coming soon.) Last week, I blocked my calendar and was hoping for a summer getaway with my wife and dog.  Well, Rona made that less appealing, and my wife ended up having some work commitments anyway.  So I decided to turn the week into a "staycation."  Yes, I made Costco runs and other miscellaneous house stuff, but I really set out to spend some time looking "under the hood" of podcasting and honing my craft.  I did two things.  I watched a bunch of videos from this month's Podfest Global Summit - turns out buying the ticket to have all the recordings on demand was money well spent.   I also joined the Podcast Editor Academy - the new venture from the Podcast Editors Club Facebook community I'm in.   There's a wealth of current and archived knowledge there.  And I also took a class on the high-end editing software I use, Izotope RX 7, from YaYa Podcasting.  Huge thanks to people like Steve Stewart, Chris Curran, Mark Deal, Chris Krimitsos, and Carrie Caufield Arick.Side note for audio geeks - I bought several "Plugins" for Adobe Audition to adds some processing and bells and whistles to audio - Audio Engineer Chris Curran's Top 10 list of audio plugins is a great read.Podcast host Buzzsprout has a great article on how to use music in podcasts. (Spoiler: You still can't use copyrighted music, even for a few seconds, even for a review). https://www.buzzsprout.com/blog/free-music-for-podcastsSpotify's charge into the podcasting world is affecting a shift from downloads to streaming, and making ad impressions easier to measure: https://www.adexchanger.com/digital-audio-radio/podcast-measurement-is-finally-improving-as-the-landscape-consolidates/?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-08-18If you have a Call To Action (CTA) in your podcast , consider simplifying how many things you are asking of listeners, and make sure you illustrate the benefit for them.  I also believe they should go at the end of the show, not the beginning. If you're going to ask for something, do it AFTER you've provided valuable content. https://medium.com/@awrd/why-podcast-calls-to-action-matter-43cffbfcaa9eSpotify is in some hot water over Anchor, the free podcast host they now own. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2 and Picard Show News Roundtable! It’s finally time for us to bring you our long-awaited Season 2 News and Picard Show Roundtable!!! Recorded on September 8th, Ruthie and I were joined by two past roundtable participants – Mark Des Cotes from Solo Talk Media, and Steve Brown of the Panels to Pixels Podcast, and two new participants – Mark Deal and Wes Huntington from The Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast. We had some recording glitches during this episode, including some we didn’t know about at the time. More on that later. We start with the news… We reacted to the former co-showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts being fired from the show for both budget concerns and abuse in the writers’ room. We discussed the announcement of Alex Kurtzman becoming the new showrunner and James Duff later made an executive producer and probable next showrunner. Then, we reacted to the casting announcements of Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and, most recently, Ethan Peck as Spock. Onto the trailer!!! Most of us had seen the trailer (one exception… and you’ll have to listen to find out who hasn’t), but we talk about the trailer and our reactions to it. We also talk about what we would like to see in Season 2. Jean-Luc Picard… Is Back!!! After that, we then spend a good deal of time discussing last month’s announcement at Star Trek Las Vegas that the next Star Trek series will be focused around Jean-Luc Picard. We reacted to that announcement; we dissected some of what Patrick Stewart said about the show is and isn’t, and we speculated what the show will be about. What we think some of the other shows might be was also discussed. We finally get to some undiscussed feedback!!! Ruthie and I finally go through some feedback that came in after the end of the season. We recorded that feedback separately, so the other panelists do not participate during that section of the podcast. We STILL didn’t cover EVERYTHING… The “Short Treks“, four shorts covering short stories within the Star Trek: Discovery universe, were not covered in this roundtable. In hindsight, we probably should have. On September 20th, CBS announced that the first of these Short Treks – a Tilly story called Runaway – would be released on October 4th. This would be followed by shorts in November, December, and January. We will definitely be covering the Short Treks next time. A few days after we recorded, CBS CEO Les Moonves resigned amidst allegations of sexual harassment, and since he’s been the driving force behind CBS All Access, I’m sure we will have more to say about this next time. We also didn’t talk much about the existing characters, some of the people involved in the Picard show, like Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, who also wrote one of the Short Treks, TNG cast talking about the Pi

Today we are talking with Mark Deal who has grown Podcast Atlanta to over 500 members (www.podatl.com). We get great tips on growing a local meetup, tips, and resources for better interviews, and how is creating podcasts for a living.  How Long Does it Take Until Your Show Catches On? George Hrab answered this question on his Geologic podcast, and George told me a long time ago that if I ever want to use a clip I could. George's show spotlights his life as the drummer of the Philadelphia Funk Authority, but also features George's Skeptic point of view with highlights on Science as well as the "Religious Moron of the Week." George mentions that you shouldn't start a podcast to "be something" but instead make it because you can make something cool, interesting and fun. Make a podcast because you have a different point of view and it needs to be heard. It took him two years before an absolute stranger mentioned they listened to the show. As George says, "You're making something and that is more than most people." Growing Your Local Meetup Group Mark Deal runs podcast Atlanta and in 18 months his group has grown to 500+ members. In today's discussion you hear: Not all 500 show up at the same time The different formats of meeting he uses What he's doing to grow the group What didn't work in regards to growing the group How a meetup group is not exactly the same a growing a podcast How to pick a location How he offsets the price of running the meetup group How he got Gordon Firemark to come to a meetup The typical breakdown of a meeting How often they meet, and how they stay connected between meetings. Have you thought about what you are going to do after you leave the military? Whether you're one and done, or you stay in until retirement, you will one day leave the military. And the steps you take today, can go a long way toward determining your post-military future.Today, I'm excited to bring a guest on our show, Mark Deal, a former Nuclear technician in the Navy. He shares his story of self-development and planning for the future, even when he didn't know what that future would be. In many ways, my story is similar to his, and I'm sure it will be similar for many of you. The big takeaway is this: “Develop a long-term path, and take short-term actions to get you there.”Or, in military terms, "Determine your strategic goals, and take tactical measures to achieve them."Whether you are a Private in the Army, a mid-level or senior-level NCO, or a company grade or field grade officer, there is a lot of wisdom here. I hope you'll stick around!

Listen Money Matters - Free your inner financial badass. All the stuff you should know about personal finance.

We interview Mark Deal who founded a company that connects overseas investors with Americans who want to start businesses and create new jobs.   Marks is a former Navy nuke with an MBA.  He founded Foreign Investor Resource Group to facilitate relationships with international investors and American entrepreneurs.   Investing a certain amount of money in a US company will buy you American citizenship.  So like everything else in America, citizenship is up for sale too.  Investors must bring over $1 million and create ten US jobs.   Twenty-one months after the investment, Mark’s company has to show proof that ten US jobs have been created through foreign investment.  You could be an existing business looking for new investors as well, it doesn’t have to be a startup.   Mark went from a six figure salary with benefits to starting his own company which was a big leap.  From his clients, he has learned to look at money strategically, not tactically.  And he uses Mint!  He gave up Excel for Mint.  There is hope for the rest of you spread sheet nerds yet.   So if any of you have an idea for a business or an existing business and are looking for an infusion of cash, there are lots of rich foreign investors out there hungry for American citizenship so they can buy up condos in Manhattan.   Show Notes Foreign Investor Resource Group:  Mark’s company Mint: An unsolicited recommendation!
