Dan and Ellen fall into their third season of What Works with an interview with Mark Henderson, an old friend of the pod and a pioneer in online media. Mark is a journalist and technologist with decades of experience in news. He is the founder and CEO of The 016, a first-of-its-kind news publisher and distributor focused on Worcester, Massachusetts. Mark worked at the Telegram & Gazette from 1990 to 2014. He spent 19 years in the newsroom, rising to the position of assistant sports editor before being named deputy managing editor for technology in 2005. In 2009, he was named digital director, where he launched the first paywall at a New York Times Company newspaper. He founded the Worcester Sun, a subscription news site that launched in August 2015 and suspended publication in February 2018. Mark was also one of the very first people Dan and Ellen interviewed for their book, “What Works in Community News.” Although Mark is not in the book, Dan did write up his conversation for Nieman Lab, which can be found here. Dan has a Quick Take on a report from the Poynter Institute, a leading journalism education organization based in St. Petersburg, Florida, that offers a clear-eyed assessment of why there are reasons to be optimistic about the future of journalism despite the very real challenges that we still face. Ellen recounts a Knight Science Journalism Program panel and awards ceremony last week at MIT. The program honored Cicero Independiente, a nonprofit newsroom in the Chicago area. The staff won for an innovative project that examined toxic air.
This week on the #HealthLawHotSpot, host Ericka Adler welcomes special guest Mark Henderson Leary, a Certified EOS Implementer® at EOS Worldwide. Mark dives deep into the common issues faced by private healthcare practice owners who may need assistance to take their practice to the next level. Mark explains that he works with all types of practices, from those struggling with profitability, to those with a need for better organization, systems, and quality employees. Ericka and Mark discuss a common challenge they see in the industry, where the entire success and operation of the health care business is tied to a main practitioner, who is not only the greatest source of income to the practice, but also serves in every key role within the practice. This can lead to a limitation on practice growth, practitioner burn-out and, eventually, a desire to sell the practice. Mark discusses the process of helping a practice turn things around for the better, both from a business and personal perspective, and shares his vision for the future of private healthcare.

In this episode of Same Surgeon, Different Light, your host, Dr. David T. Cooke, talks with Dr. Ikenna Okereke, vice chair of the department of surgery at Henry Ford Health, and Dr. Mark Henderson, professor of medicine and vice chair of education at UC Davis Health, about the role of education in medical workforce diversity. Together, they address the need for an intentional, progressive approach to creating a more inclusive workforce and the significant impact diversity within the field has on decreasing healthcare inequalities, boosting workforce engagement and retention, and providing support for underrepresented communities. "Diversity brings improved results," said Dr. Okereke. "When a workforce is more representative, we reduce mistrust and improve access in marginalized communities."
A Wellington budgeting service has had its government funding pulled, despite its manager saying they are "busier than ever" as people struggle with high interest rates and the cost of living. It comes as the Ministry of Social Development reviews its contracts with budgeting services. It's understood other providers across the country have had their funding cut. The Wellington Budget Service, run in conjunction with the Citizens Advice Bureau, is staffed predominantly by volunteers but requires funding to pay for a part-time manager and office and IT equipment. It has been funded by MSD since 2017. Last year it received $77,000. Manager David Cameron told Newstalk ZB Wellington Mornings host Nick Mills that without funding, it's possible the service could close. “We're very disappointed, there is a lot of need out there at the moment.” The service saw around 470 people last year, and demand has grown 60% since the beginning of 2024. Cameron says clients are often deep in debt, or struggling with their mortgage. The organisation helps clients create budgets and negotiates debt payments directly with creditors. All services are free. “There are other budgeting services in Wellington, but we're all very busy. Other services refer some of their clients to us. “We expect we'll start to see a few more people as the cuts to the public service start to kick in." In a statement, MSD's general manager safe strong families and communities Mark Henderson said the Ministry had recently completed a procurement process for budgeting providers across the country. The total funding available was reduced as a result of a Covid-19-specific fund for budgeting services expiring. But the Wellington Budget Service was funded prior to Covid-19. After further questions, Henderson referred to a general procurement process. “Preferred providers have been identified following a robust procurement process and unfortunately Wellington Citizens Advice bureau were unsuccessful. “We recognise there is a continuing need for support in Wellington and will ensure that [budgeting] services continue to be provided in the region.” MSD confirmed the cuts were not part of the Government's directive to reduce expenditure. Join us for a discussion on one of the most complex topics in higher education today: race-conscious admissions. In Part 1 of this two-part episode, we delve into the legal aftermath of the recent Supreme Court decisions (SFFA v. Harvard and SFFA v. UNC); the use of race as a factor in college and graduate school admissions; and how the recent court decision will affect creating more equitable and diverse medical school student bodies. AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, is joined in conversation by Mark Henderson, MD, and Heather Alarcon, JD, for an enlightening and thought-provoking discussion around this crucial topic. Henderson is professor of internal medicine, vice chair for education, and associate dean for admissions at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. He also served as residency program director at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and at UC Davis. The state of California banned affirmative action in 1996, and Henderson provides insight into how medical schools can still have a diverse student body based on his experiences at UC Davis, which is one of the most diverse medical schools in the country. As the senior director of legal services at the AAMC, Alarcon is an expert in matters ranging from civil rights and employment law to national policy issues impacting medical education. She was one of the authors of the AAMC's amicus brief to the Supreme Court in the Harvard and UNC cases in support of race-conscious admissions. Beyond the White Coat is hosted by David J. Skorton, MD, and our executive producer is Zenneia McLendon. Our project manager is Brittany Loca. This episode was produced by Aaron Dillard and edited and engineered by Laura Zelaya. Elena Marinaccio is our copy editor, and De'Angello Powe made all our graphics. Our sound design is by De'Angello Powe and David J. Skorton. Rachel Bunn provided additional support for this episode.

After healing friends, neighbors and eventually himself from disease, the Hendersons' main objective as a family turned into sharing the spiritual knowledge and growth so many others needed. Markie was working in fitness when her Dad came home with the shocking news that he had bought a restaurant for them to run.
