Ageless Athlete - Fireside Chats with Adventure Sports Icons
Wendy Fisher was once one of the fastest women on skis. A U.S. Ski Team racer and 1992 Olympian, she seemed destined for a long career in elite competition. But by her early 20s, she was burned out, struggling with identity and disordered eating, and quietly unraveling inside a system that prized performance over well-being.This could've been the end of her story. Instead, it became the beginning of a much more human one.In this episode, Wendy shares how she walked away from ski racing and found her way into big-mountain freeskiing—becoming one of the sport's pioneering women and starring in iconic ski films like Ski Movie and Global Storming by Matchstick Productions. We talk about her second act in life, how she stayed connected to movement and self-expression, and what she's learned about letting go, showing up, and staying curious in her 50s.Whether you're a lifelong athlete or just trying to stay grounded and active as you age, this episode offers perspective, honesty, and a few good powder-day metaphors.
Send us a textIn this episode we talk with big mountain skier (and gravel/mountain/road cyclist, runner, physical trainer):The evolution of nutrition on long days in the mountainsGetting into gravel cyclingHis approach to eating enough to fuel adventuresWhy strength is important for all athletesJohn Collinson grew up on the hill at Snowbird Ski Resort with his sister, Angel. Their dad worked in the snow safety department, so the pair was skiing and understanding the mountains from a very young age. John's mom homeschooled them in winter, allowing them to spend more time on skis. At 17, John won the Junior Freeskiing World tour, and the same year became the youngest person to climb the seven summits: the highest peak on each continent, and he did it in a year. After that he knew skiing had to be a part of his life, and kept competing on the Freeskiing circuit, as well as started a career filming with Sherpas Cinema. He then started filming with Teton Gravity Research & Matchstick Productions. From 2018-2022, John had a string of knee injuries, which led him down a road of discovery and learning about the human body. Showing his recoveries online inspired a new tangent to his career, offering online workout programs, as well as working as an in-person physical trainer. He's found another passion in helping people move and feel better through exercise. Ingrid Backstrom - Legendary Freeskier, Fierce Competitor, Game-Changer, Ski Movie Star Episode #25 Brought to you by Tamarack Resort & Alta Ski Area My guest today is Ingrid Backstrom. Ingrid is a legendary freeskier who made a huge impact on the ski industry and forever changed freeskiing. She started out dominating the North American freeskiing competitions ending up on the podium in 12 of the 14 contests she entered. After getting noticed by the owners of Matchstick Productions while winning a freeskiing comp in Crested Butte, CO, Ingrid exploded onto the freeskiing scene in 2004 and has never looked back. After her very first ski movie with Matchstick Productions 2004 movie Yearbook, Ingrid took home both "Best Female Performance" & "Breakthrough Performace" at the 2005 Powder Awards. Ingrid won Powder Magazine's Reader Poll every year from 2005-2015. Ingrid's aggressive, hard-charging, graceful, seemingly effortless style simply blew people's minds on the big screen. Ingrid has also proven herself on some of Earth's highest mountains skiing off 26,000' Gasherbrum II in the Himalaya, and harvesting the first decent of 20,000' Reddomaine in China not to mention her first descents in Greenland, Baffin Island, and more. Ingrid's humble background of spending weekends in a 1954 bookmobile turned RV in the Crystal Mountain parking lot and ski racing at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA are fascinating and pivotal to her success. Ingrid has been in over 20 ski movies and was even included in ESPN's 50 Most Influential People in Action Sport in 2013. Photographer, Director, and DP Gabriel L'Heureux joins the podcast to talk about how he went from a kid growing up in DC making skateboard videos with his friends, to getting his foot in the door of the ski and snowboard industry as a filmmaker with companies like Matchstick Productions and Mack Dawg, to finally getting the opportunity to work with Burton where he fell in love with the still image and got the chance to start shooting advertising lifestyle campaigns with some of the biggest names in the sport and create a look that would transcend snowboard advertising and help him evolve as an overall creative. He comes from the land down under... The Blade Dive Podcast, Episode 4, we are joined by Reuben “Reubs” Cameron, an iconic Aussie operator that is passionate to the core and does not let anything stand in his way of building and managing large scale Terrain Parks and projects, within the industry.Growing up in Brisbane, Australia....Reuben Cameron was hooked on Action Sports at a very young age. While investing his time BMX & Surfing, Cameron had his first on snow experience and was immediately obsessed! Learning that his brother purchased a Snowboard, Cameron took the leap and dove into Snowboarding, capitalizing on resorts only a few hours down the road at Falls Creek and Mt. Hotham, New South Wales, Australia. Spending his first season employed as a Lift Operator at Mt. Hotham, Cameron realized that Falls Creek had the Terrain Parks he wanted to ride and utilized the Helicopter link to access them, until he landed a job on the Park Crew. Once onboard Falls Creek's Terrain Park program, Reuben Cameron built relationships with highly credited and influential operators such as Jeremy Cooper, Mike Gerstner & Sam Poffley and saw a future in the industry, operating equipment. With inspiration from Poffley, Cameron approached the Mountain Manager and was told to pretty much, walk the talk! Cameron began riding along with operators at Falls Creek and logged a few solo hours behind the sticks. Cameron also realized that many operators had misconceptions regarding the landscape and weather that the Southern Hemisphere had and continues to offer. This presented priceless learning experiences for those committed to investing time operating in Australia. Cameron's first full season operating a Snowcat was spent in Vail, Colorado, and this experience quickly showed him that in order to gain good experience it required him to start with the basis of a solid foundation. It was his time at Vail that humbled Cameron's ego and set things in motion for a profound return to Falls Creek, re-joining Poffley, only to dive deeper into his skills as an operator and expanded his knowledge. Cameron has since held Terrain Operating positions at resorts such as June Mountain, CA , Perisher, AUS, Thredbo, AUS and has been a part of build projects like Women's Superpark, The One Hit Wonder Downunder, Grenade Games, Matchstick Productions photo/video shoots. Cameron has been fortunate enough to have travelled the world building Terrain Parks, including countries like Norway & China. Because of his appreciation for properly building a solid understanding of Snowcat operations, Cameron is a firm believer in sharing the knowledge and takes great pride in helping others. Currently residing in the coastal surfing mecca that is home to the legendary Bells Beach, Torquay, Victoria, AUS and enjoying the beautiful Australian Summers, Cameron values his time with his 2 children but is always looking forward to Winter and being back on snow.Enjoy... and if you're in the machine, go ahead and TURN THE VOLUME UP! Corey Tibljas spent most of his childhood growing up right here in Crested Butte, as one of the first graduating classes at what was then the new Community School. It was there, at the school, that he and his friend Ben Somrak decided to make a ski movie and start their company, Two Plank Productions. Thanks to the help of local film makers Matchstick Productions (see episode 26 Murray Wais), and the local TV station (see episode 46 Noah Wight), they were able to release their film to a packed house at the Center For the Arts. The duo released several more ski movies, before Corey transitioned the company into a more general film production company and Ben moved on to be a local general contractor. Another Two Plank event was "Big Air on Elk", which for several years featured skiers towed on snowmobiles launching "big air" right on Elk Avenue in downtown Crested Butte. It was a favorite event for a lot of people, and he's hoping to bring it back some day. Corey also began volunteer firefighting while he was still a teen. Today, 20 years later, he still fights fires in addition to his Two Plank responsibilities- but now as a full time paid Captain of the Crested Butte Fire Protection District. Not only that, he helps teens that are following his footsteps into firefighting as well. Crested Butte Real Estate Minute: In this episode's real estate minute, I discussed the 2021 Crested Butte and Gunnison real estate outlook. For more information, please visit the post on my website. The list of accolades awarded to skiers doesn't get much more impressive than those belonging to Chris Davenport. Two-time world champion, X-Games medalist, Chris set an FKT on all of Colorado's 14ers and then all of Colorado's tallest 100 peaks. He's been in more than thirty ski movies by Matchstick Productions and Warren Miller, he's a commentator for ESPN, ABC, and Outside Television, plus he's pretty handy on a bike.Ted caught up with Chris in his hometown of Snowmass, Colorado where this conversation took place in Chris's garage which is like a living museum of cool outdoor toys. He's philanthropic with his time, as we'll discuss today, and is a husband as well as father of three terrific boys. For more about Chris, visit www.chrisdavenport.com or on instagram, @SteepSkiing
On this episode I'm joined by executive producer/director, and one of the founding members of Matchstick Productions, Murray Wais to talk about their newest film "Huck Yeah" and how he went from a kid growing up in Seattle with a passion for skiing, to dreams of living in a van, chasing storms, and writing, to meeting up with his future business partner Steve Winter and forming one of the most cutting edge and respected ski film companies in the world. As a kid growing up in the 80s in Seattle, Murray was introduced to the world of big mountains and heavy snow at a very early age. He fell in love with the lifestyle and some of the characters coming out of the brand new world of snowboarding. After studying at a ski academy for a bit, he decided to pursue his love of writing at the University of Oregon journalisms school with dreams of one day following a similar path as some of his literary heroes like Jack Kerouac. But a small detour to Crested Butte to cover a ski competition would set him on a whole new path and the rest is history. During our conversation Murray tells me how things have changed over the years in the world of making ski and mountain bike movies, the current challenges they face in trying to put together a film tour in the world of Covid restrictions, and the advice he gives to young creatives coming up. Mark is so easy to talk to about all sorts of topics that you forget he’s an iconic freeskier with numerous awards under his belt. In 2005 and 2007 he won the Powder Video Awards for Best Male Performance and is well known by his amazing freeskiing skills that are captured in film through his nearly two-decade relationship with Matchstick Productions. In fact, he’s been featured in every single MSP film for the last 18 years, as well as several Warren Miller and Poor Boyz movies. It hasn’t gone to his head, though. He started mogul skiing before switching to park competitions and chipping a career out over the years. He says it has humbled him and led to a certain amount of contentment over the years. He’s incredibly down to earth and always eager to talk about health, longevity, and his used veggie oil-fueled adventure truck. He joins us from his home near Whistler, BC. Wendy Fisher grew up skiing in Northern California with her family and quickly learned to love the sport. She began racing and excelled at it- so much so that she ended up at Burke Mountain Ski Academy in Vermont and the U.S. Ski Team. In 1991 she won the overall title at the U.S National Alpine Championships right here in Crested Butte. The following year, she qualified for the Olympics in Albertville France, though a training run crash kept her from competing. In this episode, we talk about all of those accomplishments, followed by what she thought was going to be a move away from skiing. A series of fortunate events brought her back to competitive skiing in Big Mountain Freeskiing. With newfound freedom, she competed in freeskiing contests, starred in ski movies from Matchstick Productions and Warren Miller, and graced many a magazine cover. Our conversation about her ski career evolution continued- now she's the mother of two skiers and mostly skis as a family. This was a great conversation not just about skiing, but also about competing and mindset- plus why she lives in Crested Butte and how this mountain can challenge and rejuvenate even a professional skier. The year was 1993, and the movie was "Soul Sessions and Epic Impressions". Thus began the career of Murray Wais and his business partner Steve Winter and their fledgling company, Matchstick Productions (MSP). Every year since then, the Crested Butte based film company wows crowds across North America and beyond, and has grown into one of the most popular action sports film producers in the world. Crested Butte is often shown prominently in their films- from a then unknown Seth Morrison jumping all of the Edge in their first film, to Crested Butte native and two time Olympian Aaron Blunck more recently. From my own personal perspective, it isn't a stretch for me to say that Matchstick movies and their movies constitutes one of the reasons why I moved to Crested Butte in 1996. In this episode, Murray and I discuss a wide variety of subjects: How he got into the ski film business. The athletes he has worked with over the years. How the ski film industry has changed. Why MSP stayed in Crested Butte, rather than relocating to a larger city which may have made travel and production logistics easier for the company. How MSP finds the athletes and the music for their movies. I hope you enjoy this special episode of the Crested Butte is Home podcast. This week we interview Chris Davenport. A two-time World Champion big-mountain skier based in Aspen, Colorado. What has impressed us most about Chris is not that he’s summited Everest or skied the 100 highest peaks in Colorado or raise three-humans (all skiers) with his wife, but that he has managed to transition through numerous evolutions as skier to maintain a 25-year professional athletic career. It’s uncommon for people to have a 25-year career doing anything, let alone skiing, but Chris has figured out how.IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:Why it’s so important to pay attention to the business model behind your passionHow to build your personal brand-equityWhen saying “no” to an opportunity may be saying “yes” to your dreamsWhat goes into decision-making in the mountainsWhy using your voice for advocacy is one of the most important things we can instill in the next generationABOUT CHRIS DAVENPORTTwo-time World Champion skier Chris Davenport is widely regarded as one of the premier big mountain skiers in the world today. Among his many ski mountaineering achievements, in 2007 Chris became the first person to ski all fifty-four of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks in less than one year. He has numerous first descents of peaks around the globe under his belt, and recently guided and skied on Mt. Everest. Chris has been featured in more than thirty ski films by Warren Miller and Matchstick Productions. He is also a TV commentator for ESPN, ABC sports, and Outside Television, and is an Olympic and World Cup announcer for ski racing events. Chris is a professional speaker who often lectures on risk management as it relates to business and mountain sports. Chris is the author of two beautiful coffee-table books that celebrate North America’s mountains, Ski The 14ers and Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America. When not traveling the globe Chris resides in Aspen, Colorado with his wife and three boys.TWEETABLESI realized to be successful was going to require much more than just being a good skier.I always find that the best ideas always come when you’re out in the mountains. If I could point to one thing in my career that has been the most important is that I always had great people around me. They were maybe better skiers, maybe more thoughtful, maybe more patient, but together we made incredible teams. When there’s political will to make a change, change will happen.Snow is money, snow is jobs. And we all need that. Very few people are so good at what they do that they can have a film made about their life and their career while they are still in the middle of both. But Eric Hjorleifson is one of those people, and we talked to Eric about the eponymous film, Hoji, that was produced by Scott Gaffney and Matchstick Productions. Eric and I talk about the tour he’s been on for the film, how the idea for the film originated, and we even got Hoji to ruminate a bit on what he thinks sets him apart as a skier. And gear heads stay tuned, because tomorrow, we’ll be dropping a GEAR:30 episode where you can hear Eric talk about his new Hoji Free boot, as well as the latest iteration of his ski, the 4FRNT Renegade.Click here for more info on the Hoji movie tour datesTOPICS & TIMES:Eric’s favorite stops while touring the movie. Elyse Saugstad is one of the best big mountain skiers in the game, and we spoke with her a few days ago about the soon-to-be-released film, All In, from Matchstick Productions — the evolution of All In, and the experience of teaming up with several other big mountain rock stars, Angel Collinson, Michelle Parker, and Tatum Monod. We then talk about growing up in Alaska, and Elyse gives an update on Safe As Clinics, which is the backcountry education program she co-founded. And then we get into a whole bunch of other stuff, too, so just know that this is a fun conversation and an inspiring one, since Elyse is very actively showing all of us the value of continuing to seek out new ways to challenge ourselves and grow.TOPICS & TIMES:Packing for Portillo / What are you up to? “Just do what brings joy to you,”-Ingrid Backstrom On this episode of the “Nausicaa Cast” podcast, presented by Powder Radio, host Hadley Hammer interviews Ingrid Backstrom, the most decorated big mountain skier of all time. The two talk about how professional skiing has evolved, snow safety, and motherhood—Backstrom recently gave birth to a daughter. Backstrom also reflects on her career. “I’m still pretty amazed that somehow I’m still skiing for a living,” says Backstrom. “It still feels like yesterday that I wouldn’t even tell people I was a professional skier because I was so nervous it would all go away.” Bio: After graduating from Whitman College, the call of the mountains drew her to Squaw Valley, California, to put in what she thought would be a year-long stint as a ski bum. However, it only took a few freeskiing contests for Ingrid to realize that she had found her niche. Without doubt, she would be calling the mountains home for a long, long time. Since then, she placed top three in 13 of 16 freeskiing contests entered and has been awarded Breakthrough Performance in 2005, 5-time Best Female Performance, and ten-time Reader Poll winner for her roles in 9 Matchstick Productions films at the annual Powder Magazine Video Awards, in addition to appearing in the 2007 documentary Steep, All.I.Can and Into the Mind by Sherpas Cinema, six Warren Miller films, and 2015‘s The Great Siberian Traverse by Powder Magazine and Sherpas Cinema. Her travels with The North Face have allowed her to make first descents in Baffin Island, Greenland, and 20,000ft Reddomaine Peak in China, as well as a ski descent of Denali. She was named one of 50 most influential action sports athletes in 2013 by ESPN. When she’s not skiing, Ingrid still stays outside as much as possible in her home in Leavenworth, Washington, running, biking, and gardening to relax and keep fit. Ingrid is grateful for the opportunities that her sport brings her, especially getting to travel and ski with “amazing people around the world.” Follow Ingrid: Instagram Facebook Watch
