Meet musician Colin Stetson the composer for the new movie "The Menu", starring Ralph Fiennes. Stetson masters the art of melding his multi-instrument mastery into one incredible score. Colin talks all things business and being a music maestro. The score for The Menu is an evolution from any other score Stetson has done in the past. The string-forward and percussive music uses grotesque soundscapes and motifs to mirror the psychosis of the main character (Ralph Fiennes). As the narrative builds, Stetson creates unique musical moments, some given only at a specific time and place, and others that weave a thread throughout the film. Rather than creating character themes, he created a theme for the menu that interacts with characters, giving the menu a sense of self; an off-kilter pretension that instigates discomfort in the listener. The film's concept allowed Stetson to use eccentric and experimental instrumentation: playing glasses with chopsticks, hitting tuning forks on Tibetan bowls, using pans as percussion; making the score fit the environment while keeping it separate from the diegetic sounds of the kitchen. He uses his own undulus vocals which clone the full orchestra of strings.“From my first reading of the script to our last moments on the mix stage, my experience creating the music on this film has been an absolute joy, as the themes, refrains, and aesthetic have seemed to jump right off of the page and screen for me with every brilliant turn of phrase, perfect edit, and wickedly delivered performance. It is pure pleasure working with such an incredible team and I am truly grateful for the whole of it,” says Stetson.A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. Alternative classical composer Phillip Bimstein lives in Salt Lake City and Springdale, Utah, where he served two terms as mayor. A recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet The Composer, American Composers Forum, Austria’s Prix Ars Electronica and an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Bimstein’s music has been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Bang on a Can Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Spoleto Festival and London’s Royal Opera House. Bimstein was born in Chicago and is a graduate of Chicago Conservatory of Music, where he majored in theory & composition. In the 1980s he led the new wave band Phil ‘n’ the Blanks, whose three albums and six videos were college radio and MTV hits. After further studies at UCLA in composition, orchestration and conducting, Bimstein took a hiking trip to southern Utah and never left. Fascinated by language and the ability of music to tell a story, he frequently incorporates text in his work. Refuge, his string quartet based on the book by Utah naturalist Terry Tempest Williams, was described as “sublime - elegant perfection” by the Deseret News. In 2005 Bimstein composed Lockdown, a techno tone poem based on the sounds and voices of a youth crisis center in southern Utah. In addition to public concerts, the work is presented as dialogue-promoting outreach to youth detention facilities and prevention programs. In 2006 Bimstein received his second Continental Harmony grant from the American Composers Forum to compose Zion Canyon Song Cycle based on the historical and contemporary stories of his community. Performed by his Americana folk chamber group Red Rock Rondo, it is the subject of an Emmy Award winning PBS -TV music special, which also won Bimstein an Emmy for music composition. In 2011 Bimstein composed a new song cycle for Red Rock Rondo and the Salt Lake Sympony based on the best-selling book by Ted Gup, A Secret Gift. In 2015 the Salt Lake Symphony premiered The Brahma Viharas, a symphony with English horn soloist (Charlotte Bell), which Bimstein composed based on four ancient Buddhist/Yogic contemplative practices that were developed over centuries to cultivate the qualities of lovingkindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity in the human heart. Bimstein has practiced yoga, the brahma viharas and mindfulness meditation for more than 40 years, and teaches the University of Utah Honors course, “Opening the Mind’s Eye: Contemplative Practice & Higher Education.” Described by Outside Magazine as “America's only all-natural politician-composer,” Bimstein served two terms as Springdale mayor. Due to his successful efforts to bring harmony to his previously divided community, Parade Magazine dubbed Bimstein, “The Man Who Brought Civility Back to Town.” In 2017 Bimstein gave a TEDx Talk about his approach to community: How to Practice Politics with Music in Mind. Bimstein has served as Chair of the Utah Humanities Council (who awarded him the 2009 UHC Alumni Award and the Delmont R. Oswald Fellowship), Vice-President of the American Music Center in New York, and he is profiled in Who’s Who in America. Bimstein designs and teaches an interdisciplinary course in the University of Utah’s Honors College, “Composing a Community,” and he is a frequent keynote speaker on creativity, community and collaboration. That includes producer Alex Overington who takes us on a road trip to unravel the creative process of those who write without a score. This episode of Re:sound was produced by Dennis Funk.Music for Re:sound* is provided by Patient Sounds, a private-press record label and book publisher in Chicago. Hi, I’m Nadia Sirota, host of Meet the Composer (MTC). MTC is a podcast that confronts the artists and art that move us, using radio storytelling to tease out what makes these pieces and people tick. We aim to share the music we love with anyone who is down to listen. Music can be tricky to talk about, so when words fail, Meet the Composer uses all of the tools in our arsenal – sound design, phrasing, underscoring, and sonic embroidery – to share what we love about music with our audience. MTC is art and artists, exposed. Just a few weeks ago, we were blown away to hear that MTC won a 2015 Peabody Award, broadcasting's highest honor, praise which put us in the heady company of Radiolab and This American Life. The Peabody committee described MTC as “Fascinating, intelligent, enlightening podcasts devoted to the work of current classical composers. The show integrates music with thoughtful conversation about it without distracting from either.” We've been humbled by the overwhelming reception from our listeners. Since the show launched in June 2014, listeners from 183 countries have downloaded MTC more than 540,000 times! We've also had big shout-outs from The Guardian and The New York Times with the headlines “Meet the Composer: the podcast that's demystifying classical music” and “With ‘Meet the Composer,’ Nadia Sirota Illuminates New Music.” Both seasons were funded in large part by your contributions via Kickstarter, so, honestly, we could not have made this happen without your support. We hope we have rewarded your trust with beautiful, composed radio, and we want to start making you more.  With our upcoming third season, we are excited to take on new formats for the show and to follow creative themes past individual composers to stranger and more exotic conclusions. An emphasis on the driving forces that compel composers to put pen to paper will be a key component of Season Three. We will continue to profile composers but also unpack breakthrough pieces and dig into those moments when musical styles clashed, flirted and mutated between all types of composers, both living and dead! We will continue to compose radio with probing interviews, expert commentary and through-composed sound design. Learn about our current and critical Kickstarter campaign and help today to make Season Three a reality.

Hi, I'm Nadia Sirota, host of Q2 Music's Meet the Composer (MTC). We set out to create something really different with MTC – a look into the minds and creative processes of composers making some of the most innovative, strange and breathtakingly beautiful music today. And we wanted to make these audio portraits feel like a musical experience. Because you supported our Season One Kickstarter, we were able to bring to life our first five hour-long, fully sound-designed episodes. We couldn't have done it without your help. We're so proud of how Season One turned out and so thrilled that MTC spoke to you.  You listened to Meet the Composer over 200,000 times from over 70 countries, via iTunes, wqxr.org and wnyc.org. Tens of thousands heard MTC on terrestrial radio in New York (WNYC), but also in Los Angeles and soon Chicago. We got some great coverage for Season One, including from Radiolab, the BBC, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Vogue plus a wealth of comments and social media posts you can check out here. Here's what Jad Abumrad of WNYC's Radiolab had to say: "Compelling and beautifully produced. One of the best things I've heard in a long time... Talking about music in a way that's compelling can be hard. And so when people do it well, I just feel like you gotta give them props."
