"I'm aiming for a few more": Dame Kiri Te Kanawa ahead of her 80th birthday Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has had an eventful life. Simon Reeve is a broadcaster and writer best known for his TV documentaries which combine travel and adventure with investigations into the challenges faced by the places he visits. His journeys have taken him across jungles, deserts, mountains and oceans, and to some of the most dangerous and remote regions of the world. He's dodged bullets on frontlines, dived with seals and sharks, survived malaria, walked through minefields and tracked lions on foot.Simon grew up in Acton in west London. He experienced anxiety and depression as a teenager and left school with few qualifications. He eventually found a job in the post room at the Sunday Times and from there progressed to working with the news teams, filing stories on a range of subjects from organised crime to nuclear smuggling. In the late 1990s he wrote one of the first books about Al-Qaeda and its links to Osama Bin Laden. His expertise in this area was quickly called upon after the 9/11 attacks in the USA, and he became a regular guest on American television and radio programmes. The current pandemic put Simon's overseas trips into abeyance and he has turned his attention to the UK, recently making programmes about Cornwall and the Lake District. The New Zealand born opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the world's greatest sopranos. She enjoyed a 50 year career singing lead roles in opera houses around the globe, and on dozens of studio recordings. Since retiring in 2017 she has focussed on leading her Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation which supports young opera singers from her home country.Dame Kiri talks to John Wilson about her early life in Gisborne and Auckland, New Zealand. Of Māori heritage, she was adopted as a baby and cites both her parents as a huge influence on her choice of career and work ethic. As a teenager she loved musical theatre, her favourite being Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story which she was later to record in an operatic version conducted by Bernstein himself. Moving to London in 1966 to study at the Royal Opera Centre, her education in opera began in earnest under her teacher Vera Rózsa. Her breakthrough role came in 1971 when she was cast as the Countess Almaviva in the Royal Opera House's production of The Marriage of Figaro. Her Metropolitan Opera House debut followed three years later when she was asked at the last minute to replace the soprano singing Desdemona in Verdi's Otello for the opening performance. Dame Kiri discusses the fame and attention she attracted when in 1981 she performed at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, watched live by 600 million people. After over 60 years of performing, she also talks about her decision to finally retire in 2017.Producer: Edwina PitmanArchive used: Omnibus : Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, BBC1, 10 May 1985 BBC Sound Archive, Kiri Te Kanawa interview with Andrew Sakley, 1966 Soprano Sundays, BBC2, 21 Dec 1975 Le Nozze di Figaro, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, 1971 Otello, Metropolitan Opera New York, 1974 BBC Sound Archive, The marriage service in St. Paul's Cathedral of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, 29 July 1981 Top Of The Pops, BBC1, 24 October 1991 Parkinson, BBC1, 18 March 1981 Going Live, BBC1, October 1991 Wogan BBC1, 25 Dec 1984
West Auckland singer-songwriter Jan Hellriegel has lined up a string of shows around the country for her new tour 'If Not Now, When?', heralded as a mix of piano tunes, comedy, and stories. Kicking off late September, the tour will see Jan unveiling her new project which follows on the heels of her 2019 multimedia venture Sportsman of The Year. Jan's love affair with music started as a youngster when she learned classical piano. From there she took vocal coaching from Dame Sister Mary Leo, whose protégés included Kiri Te Kanawa. Jan has always forged her own sonic path, and has her own unique approach to music that didn't always fit with the view of her label. In anticipation of Jan's upcoming tour she joins Colin to share some yarns and play some favourites.

Another episode featuring orchestral songs, these arrangements by the French composer Joseph Canteloube AKA Marie-Joseph Canteloube de Malaret (1879 – 1957), of elaborately orchestrated folk songs from the Auvergne region of France. From the 1960s an beyond these songs have become favorites of sopranos seeking engaging works for voice and orchestra. Canteloube made orchestral arrangements of five different series (or books) of songs published between 1924 and 1955. The songs themselves are, in turn, playful, plangent, tragic, saucy, rustic, and even surprisingly emancipated. In 1930 French soprano Madeleine Grey was the first artist to record the songs. Subsequently the Ukrainian-born Israeli soprano Netania Davrath became the first to take on the entire cycle. Cognoscenti still find her versions to be the most “authentic,” although that is a loaded term when one considers how elaborate these arrangements are. Other singers that helped put these songs on the map, as it were, include Anna Moffo, Victoria de los Angeles, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Frederica von Stade. All these singers are heard in this episode, which also includes memorable contributions from singers as varied as Dawn Upshaw, Barbra Streisand, Jill Gomez, Marvis Martin, Gérard Souzay, Marni Nixon, Anna Caterina Antonacci, Elly Ameling, Régine Crespin, Arleen Augér, Susan Reed, and others. You may also be quite surprised (I know I was!) to hear the singer that Canteloube most preferred in this repertoire, in a recording accompanied by the composer himself. Jenny Beavan has won three Oscars for her costumes for the films Room with a View, Mad Max: Fury Road and Cruella, and has received nine further Academy Award nominations. She was born in London, and her parents were both professional musicians who encouraged her to paint, draw and learn a musical instrument. After studying theatre design, she was invited at the age of just 21 to create the sets for a production of Carmen at the Royal Opera House, conducted by Sir Georg Solti. She also worked on the costumes, which eventually led to her current career. Her credits now include more than 60 films and television series, including a long collaboration with the Merchant Ivory team, on titles such as Howards End and Remains of the Day, as well as Room with a View. Her costumes range from precise period recreations, in films such as The King's Speech, to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max and the extravagant 1970s-inspired gowns for Emma Stone and Emma Thompson in Cruella. We're supporting Gladys in the Bell Ringers Association Union local #DING and their strike. Beryl, our switchboard operator, let a very confused voicemail get through to the podcast. Americans: don't forget to vote in the Mid-term elections! A fabulous scene of Miss. Lovelock driving the carriage with Humphries in his red riding gear. “Walkies” jogs our memory to a classic AYBS episode. Peacock tries to encourage Lovelock's fascination with his history… without luck. “It's not quite the same thing, is it?” We learn “punka wallas”. Slocombe and Brahams can still pull the guys! We meet Malcom-Heathcliff again in the path and threatens Humphries again. Who won 3rd place in the Miss. Lovely Legs contest in Tiverton? One guess… “Of you'll find some rough lads waiting for you”. Humphries looks right into the camera to contemplate. Mongolians booked a tour at the Manor but the currency has fallen drastically! Cheap, weird jokes made about Mongolians. The staff have to create a “cultural event” for their guests (Just like in the “Mr. Slocombe” episode!). Slocombe once served Vanessa Redgrave! Ferrets in trousers? Humphries shows off some childhood photos. We get a great “jug ears” thanks to Wendy Richard. A weird hierarchy joke against Molturd from Brahams. Molturd will arrange for local villagers to audition for the talent show. Kiri Te Kanawa is the famous New Zealand opera singer that Slocombe wouldn't remember. Mavis is encouraging Humphries to have a scrap with Malcom-Healthcliff. Mrs Cleghampton (again) tries out for employment and fails (with her adapted cello). Her g-string broke! Tiddles cries; glass breaks. But she played at the Proms! Mr. Jeff explains the cultural mistakes during the Mongolians' concert. The Mongolian language is not a tonal language yet the actors mostly speak Mandarin Chinese. The gong is played. Mongolians stand and bow, over and over. The “sooo…” joke from “The Hand of Fate” episode is recycled but the asian character gets a zing in the end. Molturd battles a donkey and loses. Sir Gay Humphries! Joanne Heywood knows how to dance ballet on point! A suspicious red codpiece. And a patriotic “Britannia” makes an appearance. We think this episode missed several points b/c of sloppy jokes about Mongolians but this shows its age (yet we still love it!). Emotional intelligence is more and more important, especially in parenting, especially in today's day and age. EI, or EQ, for short, or SEL, social emotional learning, means: the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. It's critical to teach our kids to develop their EQ…BUT it's tricky because chances are we were never taught how to manage our own! GOOD NEWS, it's NEVER too late to grow and develop it. In fact, having kids provides a great opportunity to both learn and teach emotional intelligence. My guest, Nadine Levitt, is an expert in teaching how to understand your child's emotions and your own. The result is kids who feel safe, heard, supported and trust their parents. When your child feels this way, not only are they able to manage their emotions, you have a better relationship with them and parenting has less friction. In this episode we talk about: emotions, how we break it down for kids so that it is both simple and empowering. How emotions come and we can't control them How to look at what our emotions are telling us Emotions come to us in clusters, how can we direct them? As parents, we can either be influenced by our kids' emotions OR we can be an influence so when your child has big feelings, accept that emotions are here and notice (without judgement) what you are saying to yourself about them. 00h 00’00” The point of no return 00h 02’59” Presentación 00h 04’47” Cabecera 00h 05’56” Inicio 00h 07’20” Prólogo 00h 09’15” Obertura 00h 13’30” Think of me 00h 19’02” Angel of music 00h 21’20” Little Lotte 00h 22’38” The mirror 00h 24’08” The Phantom of the Opera 00h 29’23” The music of the night 00h 36’00” I remember 00h 38’11” Stranger than you dreamt it 00h 40’47” Magical Lasso 00h 41’47” Notes 00h 46’56” Prima Donna 00h 52’59” Poor fool, he makes me laugh 00h 56’34” Why have you brought me here? 00h 57’41” Raoul, I’ve been there 01h 00’05” All I ask of you 01h 05’02” All I ask of you (Reprise) 01h 09’08” Entr’acte 01h 12’11” Masquerade 01h 17’17” Why so silent 01h 19’52” Notes 01h 25’39” Twisted every day 01h 27’16” Don Juan Triumphant Rehearsal 01h 28’27” The Phantom of the Opera (Reprise) 01h 29’43” Wishing you were somehow here again 01h 33’44” Wandering child 01h 35’39” Bravo monsieur 01h 36’26” Don Juan Triumphant 01h 41’14” The point of no return 01h 47’41” Down once more 01h 48’16” Track down this murderer 01h 49’13” Finale 01h 59’32” Anécdotas y curiosidades 02h 04’24” Escena final - Camilo Sesto & Andrea Bronston 02h 09’56” Música en la oscuridad – Camilo Sesto 02h 15’37” Música en la oscuridad – Juan Navarro 02h 22’30” Learn to be lonely – Beyoncé 02h 30’02” The heart is slow to learn – Kiri Te Kanawa

People are more inclined to buy expensive items when the store is playing classical music. How to rekindle their passion? Time scarcity - brought on by an emotional response that you're feeling overwhelm. Interrupt overwhelm - do something different Free to teachers, cost to districts. The more you apply these skills the easier it is to avoid and manage overwhelm. Emotions are just messages We are engineered to see patterns. Thoughts are just patterns. Often our thoughts are not based in patterns. When you become aware you're telling yourself a story, just tell yourself. Respond rather than react. Communication cards Need to speak freely: challenged and rewarded. When we share, we don't feel shame. The need for people to take responsibility for their part. Leadership - formal and informal leadership opportunities. Leadership is having control over the outcome. Controlling your own identity. SEL - Teach emotions in an isolated way How you can use for deeper learning Sponsors Transformative Principal Mastermind Lead a school everyone can be proud of. Being a principal is tough work. Melba toast. Peach Melba. Melba sauce. Why are we listing foodstuffs (and sounding a bit like Alan Partridge in the process)? Because they are all named after the subject of this episode of The Sound of the Hound, Nellie Melba. The soprano was one of the most famous singers of the era – and it was Fred who captured her voice for us to enjoy over 100 years later. Melba was born in Victoria, Australia, in 1861 and moved to Europe in the mid-1880s in search of a singing career. Nothing really happened in London so she went to Paris and found success there. Curious, romantic and demanding, Melba soon became a household name in opera houses around the world. Although she recorded some phonograph cylinders in New York in 1895, she hated them (a “scratching, screeching” noise, “never again,” she declared). It fell to Fred, his brother Will and their associate Landon Ronald to change her mind. “Melba was more than a prima donna. She was in the diva class, and well she knew it,” Fred wrote. But in early 1904, they captured her voice. The session was not without its problems. The biggest one was that she demanded the recording took place in her Great Cumberland Place flat in London – complete with a full orchestra. She was “dominant” and “harsh” and, despite all the work, refused to let The Gramophone Company release the recordings. It took all of Fred's guile to persuade her to finally release them. Once out, they sold like hot cakes, increasing her fame. Her recording sessions then became events in themselves. Journalists were invited, and Melba even had her own coloured label on her discs. Indeed, the initially reluctant singer lapped it all up, becoming something of a recording pioneer; she did a live radio broadcast and her last appearance at Covent Garden in 1926 was recorded by His Master's Voice and broadcast. She became a Dame. So famous was she that another Dame, Kiri Te Kanawa, played her in Downton Abbey. Michael Volpe joins us to discuss this memorable singer, her unique voice and her incredible legacy. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

(Originally aired in March 2021) Brian Castles-Onion is one of Australia's most exciting and well-known opera conductors. His career expands internationally, having worked at New York's Metropolitan Opera and the Julliard School of Music. His love of opera began when he was just 4 years old, at which point his weekly accumulation of new LPs began, creating what is now one of the largest private collections of vocal recordings in the world. He's worked with Sumi Jo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Placido Domingo, and in March and April 2021 he's conducting La Traviata's triumphant return to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. As the worldwide pandemic renews its threat and creates general unrest, panic, anger, and depression, as well as illness and death for so many, we turn as always to music for solace. One of the central pieces that I have always turned to in times of personal turmoil has been Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder. Over the years I have listened to and derived comfort from dozens and dozens of recordings and live performances. In this episode, I feature eight different sopranos, (Elisabeth Söderström, Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Edda Moser, Soile Isokoski, Margaret Price, Teresa Żylis-Gara, Lucia Popp, and Sena Jurinac), each of whom makes her mark in a distinctive way on one of the four songs in the series. I also read each of the poems in my own English translation. These performances are supplemented by excerpts from Elektra, Daphne, and Die Ägyptische Helena performed by Rose Pauly, Hilde Güden, Christa Ludwig, and Walter Berry, as well as the world premiere 1985 performance of “Malven,” Strauss’s last completed work, sung by Kiri Te Kanawa; and the Oboe Concerto played by Léon Goossens in its first commercial recording from 1947. Featured conductors in the episode include Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Marek Janowski, Georg Solti, Karl Böhm, Heinrich Hollreiser, Fritz Busch, Alceo Galliera, and Milan Horvat. A bonus episode for my Patreon supporters will feature twelve more of my favorite sopranos, each one singing one of these autumnal Lieder. As we world citizens face the great unknown, these artists help lift our spirits and reorient our perspective. Links to my previous Music for a World in Crisis episodes: Episode 26: Calling You Episode 27: That Time of Evening Episode 29: A Social Isolation Schubertiade Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. The Oxford English Dictionary defines “glamour” as “magic; enchantment; spell” and “a magical or fictitious beauty attaching to any person or object; a delusive or alluring charm.” Further down in the entry are “charm; attractiveness; physical allure,” certainly the definition we most closely associate with the term. And yet, it’s fascinating to examine the concept of glamour from its spellbinding origins. In the first of my episodes on Glamour, I examine many singers both from the spell-binding sense of the term and the sense of vocal and personal allure. Among others, I examine such varied singers as Alice Faye, Eleanor Steber, Annie Lennox, Carol Neblett, Betty Carter, Diahann Carroll, Teresa Żylis-Gara, Liane Augustin, Dorothy Kirsten, Florence Quartararo, Hana Janků, Helen Traubel, Hilde Güden, Kiri Te Kanawa, Leontyne Price, Lisa Kirk, Lotte Lehmann, Anna Moffo, Maria Nemeth, Montserrat Caballé, Rosa Ponselle, Zarah Leander, and The Incomparable Hildegarde with an eye to what makes their work glamourous in all senses of the term. And the gentlemen are by no means excluded: I spend particular time on the seductive and dulcet tenor tones of Fritz Wunderlich, José Carreras, Karl Friedrich, and Miguel Fleta. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glories of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great classical and opera singers of the past and present with the help of guests from the classical music field: singers, conductors, composers, coaches, agents, and voice teachers. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. durée : 01:58:19 - Relax ! du lundi 09 mars 2020 - par : Lionel Esparza - On dresse le portrait de la soprano néo-zélandaise Kiri Te Kanawa, qui a fait ses adieux définitifs à la scène en 2017. Et notre légende du jour est la première intégrale de la musique pour piano d'Erik Satie par Aldo Ciccolini. - réalisé par : Louise Loubrieu
She was a Maori child from a working class family, who grew up by the sea in a remote New Zealand town... So how did Kiri Te Kanawa rise to become one of the greatest sopranos of all time? She tells the story here, starting with a vision her mother had of her singing at Covent Garden, a vision that became a reality. She also tells the hair-raising tale of her accidental debut at the Met; she was given just three hours notice, but it turned her into an international opera superstar, overnight. And she describes with great amusement, her invitation to sing at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana.
‘It just opened up this whole new world to me.’ Adventurer and survival expert Megan Hine tells us about a book that influenced her, Land of the Long White Cloud: Maori Myths, Tales and Legends by Kiri Te Kanawa (1989).

T’au Pupu’a came to the United States from Kingdom of Tonga at the age of five. He grew up in a home of modest means in Salt Lake City, Utah and started playing football at the age of ten. Legendary football coach Bill Belichick discovered him while he was playing for Weber State University and he joined the Cleveland Browns as a defensive lineman. But in his second season, a nasty injury ended his NFL career. Despite almost no formal musical training, he decided to follow a new dream to become a professional opera singer. After struggling in New York City for five years, he met opera superstar Kiri Te Kanawa at a book signing at the gift shop of The Metropolitan Opera. And she helped him earn a scholarship to The Julliard School, America’s most prestigious music conservatory. In the spirit of the opera world, we’re telling T’au’s story in four short acts. Meet the Composer with Nadia Sirota – Q2 Music's podcast about the musical creative process – returns for its third season on Monday, March 6. Pre-game for the new season with a week of clips from the original WNYC radio program. Meet the Composer is available on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. We conclude the week-long ramp-up to our next and third season with an interview with the legendary, charismatic Leonard Bernstein. Though mostly known for his work as a composer (West Side Story) and conductor (New York Philharmonic), Leonard Bernstein was also a consummate evangelist for classical music. This conversation focuses on Bernstein's efforts as a music educator and the role that education played for host Tim Page in his music criticism. Hear a piece of music you loved? Och vem är den homosexuella skuggan bakom Duke Ellingtons musik?Låtlista: The Beauty of Sorrow Pauline Oliveros Pauline Oliveros, accordeon Taras Room Deep Listening DL 22-2004 CD Reason in Madness mixed Pauline Oliveros Pauline Oliveros, solo accordeon.
