This episode was based on the following micro blog Megan wrote recently. It sparked some interest, so she decided to make it a quick solo show! Networking working. When I googled the definition of networking, the following came up: "the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts." And then when I looked on Dictionary.com, it said this: "a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest." I think the second definition is closer to the mark. Perhaps it still doesn't fully get there (for me) because it doesn't include the words consistently or regularly. Maybe in my brain it should also include - then what? But perhaps that is another word. What's a word for what you do after you have made those contacts? Working your network... Communication? Relationship-building? You see, I think if we have regularly or consistently continued to "work our network" or kept up with people, then folks are top of mind when opportunities come about. This week I (almost) simultaneously got a reach-out from a former colleague to catch-up and a message from a friend who has been looking for a job for a bit. The former colleague had a potential advisory/consulting opportunity for me... and my job-seeking friend was reminding me she was still out there looking. The timing of this caused me to look and see if the colleague's company had any job openings that might work for the job-seeker, and they did. Bingo! Now, I'm not saying that means this will be a perfect match and she will get hired, but we wouldn't know if I hadn't looked. Perhaps there is some serendipity involved here, but my point is that keeping in touch with former colleagues is a great idea - and not just when you need something. The more we stay top-of-mind, the more potential we have to help others and ourselves. Keep building those relationships by the random reach-out, by commenting on their posts, sharing their content... and always keep an open mind about how we can help each other! Work that network. ~._.*._.~ Making a Marketer is brought to you by Powers of Marketing - providing exceptional podcast experiences & online and in-person events. We need more diversity and representation on stages, at events, behind the microphones, and in the executive boardrooms. But just stating that obvious fact and taking real action to make that a reality are two separate things. The truth is the only way change can occur, is by not only educating but empowering people in power to take action for change by aligning those investments, those initiatives, and those advances with what everyone wants more of: money. In this episode, I explain why more representation isn't just the right thing to do, it's the best financial thing to do. I share snippets from my interview with Megan Powers on the Trade Show Talk Podcast expressing my feelings on social impact, on the need for more women and diverse individuals with a seat at the table, and even got very personal regarding my experiences, vantage point, and reflection as a speaker, business owner, business leader, creator, and as a black man.Let me be crystal clear, black is not only beautiful, black is not only powerful, black is profitable! My solo shows have been quite popular and work well with my schedule (having to schedule just me!), so this is the third and final one of those in season five. Every Monday, with one exception since February 8th of 2021, I have posted a “Monday Musing.” These musings are typically a story that include what I see as a business lesson. Sometimes they are just about something interesting intended to get people thinking! In this episode I talk about two that have really resonated with people on social media, and I also talk about progress and recognition in the meetings and events industry after two difficult years (the meat of this "sandwich"). Optimal Confusion Have you considered confusion can make you smarter? That it might fire-up a part of your brain that might have been dormant? This will get you thinking! Events Progress We are absolutely NOT where we were in 2019, nor should we be. We have had our challenges, but the progress the meetings and events industry is making AND recognition of those in it is important to talk about! There is data to support the progress--more can be learned on this episode of the Trade Show Talk Podcast - Episode 7 with Doug Emslie -- CEO of Tarsus and Kai Hattendorf -- CEO of UFI. Awe & Wonder You might not believe in symbolism, but you'll probably still think what happened to me was pretty cool. Do you ever just sit with yourself in the quiet? Amazing things can happen, and when they fall in line with a book you are reading? Even better! This resonated with a lot of people. Our guest? Do you know me? Let's connect! Here's my latest bio... Megan Powers is a creator and strategist who thrives on helping people learn. She has spent the majority of her career working in meetings and events, primarily serving in planning, sales, and marketing roles. Working for software companies, in a venue, in event production, and then running her own marketing agency all served as a foundation for her latest venture. She is now working for Event Marketing Partners as Senior Director, Corporate Event Marketing. Megan has loved hosting and producing podcasts since 2016–she thrives on hearing stories and lessons from guests who get us all thinking in a different way. Her podcast Making a Marketer has been going strong since 2017, and she is delighted to be hosting Trade Show Talk for TSNN. Seeing lessons from everyday life requires some reflection. Do you take time to sit and think about the lessons or stories you can pull from what seems like "every day"? After a very interesting few weeks the lessons for this episode were not difficult to pull out! Being snowed-in taught me one... The never-give-up mentality of my QB / team taught me another... This our very first "no guest" episode! It's an idea host Megan has been toying with -- to add a third episode each month that's a very brief recap on recent marketing news or a "what I learned" recently sort of thing. We really look forward to your feedback if this is something you'd like more of as a supplement to the two episodes per month we normally publish. Megan had a BIG birthday recently and through that adventure there were a few things that occurred to her that are life / business lessons. It's just about 12-minutes long, and she also did the editing herself on this one, so please forgive if it's a little less smooth than normal:). Download our new free ebook on event-data personalization: https://l.swapcard.com/event-personalization-with-data/ In the first half of this show our host Megan Powers, from Powers of Marketing, discussed meeting and event industry news with Swapcard Senior Data Scientist, Vincent Kurta. Megan and Vincent discussed the recent move by Marriott to take on Airbnb. Airbnb has disrupted the meetings and event industry, and this is a way for Marriott to try and compete, even on a small scale. This CNN article is worth a read (or watch!). Also discussed in the news is the emergence of 5G, and how it’s going to affect the events industry. Brandt Krueger and Will Curran did a session on it at PCMA Convening Leaders in mid-January. We aren’t there yet, but we will get there… and could potentially have the same issues we have now because the use will increase. Our guest Stephan Forseilles is Head of Technology and Digital Transformation with EasyFairs. EasyFairs prides themselves on focusing on the future. Their Website says “Let’s visit the future together! What will your life and business look like in the future? Our aim is to take you there. With a perfect mix of information, education, entertainment, and networking opportunities.” They love tech, but they are also ALL about the human touch, and focusing on the customer’s needs. We discuss many aspects of AI and how technology is being used to personalize events--which puts a focus on the customer but also helps the organizations that use it for their events. We are at a sort of turning point with apps and there is a difference between B2B and B2C shows… We would love to hear what you think about using tech to personalize events!

Inside Events Podcast, hosted by Megan Powers; Episode #6 - “The Present & Future of Event Technology" with Adam Parry of Event Industry News and Brian Fanzo. In the first half of this show our host Megan Powers, from Powers of Marketing, discussed news with millennial pager-wearing keynote speaker and tech evangelist Brian Fanzo of iSocialFanz. Megan and Brian discussed the growth of meetings and events, particularly growth that was discussed and made evident at IBTM World in Barcelona last month. At a time where the potential for virtual events is more possible than ever before, the demand to meet in person is very strong… partially sparked by newer generations. Also discussed in news was a retail show called Shoptalk, which is making the move to have every session speaker and keynote be a WOMAN at their 2020 show. This isn’t a permanent move, but makes a statement that more women need to be at the front of the room, and it shouldn’t be an afterthought, but purposeful. Megan and Brian round-out news discussing two very innovative technologies that can be used to help both event organizers and exhibitors to be more successful. Our guest Adam Parry has strongly put event technology in the UK and beyond at the forefront in the meetings and events industry. Not only is he a co-founder of a media company, but also of the only technology show dedicated to event tech in that part of the world. We discussed the evolution of the Event Tech Awards and Event Tech Live… and how innovation in technology has slowed - what Megan refers to the “elephant in the room.” Adam has very interesting insights as to why event tech is in a slow-down, and what that means for attendees and the industry at-large. Adam and Brian are kindred spirits on the tech front, which makes for an incredibly thought-provoking conversation.
Inside Events Podcast, hosted by Megan Powers; Episode #5 - “Understanding Sustainability in the Industry with Informa’s Ben Weilgus,” with guests Ben Weilgus & Elizabeth Glau.In the first half of this show our host Megan Powers, from Powers of Marketing, discussed news with industry colleague Elizabeth Glau. Megan and Elizabeth also talked about an article from Skift in which the airline industry was called out for not being as eco-friendly as they purport. This was a perfect precursor to the discussion on sustainability in the second half of the show. Our guest Ben Wielgus has been in the meetings and events industry for less than four years, but he worked in sustainability for a dozen years before that. He brings a ton of experience from his years of working with KPMG, and he’s made a concerted effort to learn from industry pros like Jeff Chase. There’s a “big, hairy, audacious goal” that Ben talks about towards the end -- make sure to listen all the way through for the final nuggets!
On this week's show, we talk to Jen Cole from Depict Media & Social Media Examiner chatting with Alan all about Building Communities Organically on Social. Jen is a Social Media Specialist and Community Manager with a confident history in digital marketing. While she is the co-founder of the social media marketing firm DEPICT Media based in Wichita, KS, she is also the Community Manager for Social Media Examiner and Producer of Social Media Examiner’s #smechat. Her own podcast, Making A Marketer co-hosted by Megan Powers, has hosted many world-renowned industry experts such as Brian Fanzo, Madalyn Sklar, and Michaela Alexis. Jen has a strong belief that social media channels should be utilized to grow tight-knit, organic communities of followers who genuinely identify with a brand.
Inside Events Podcast, hosted by Megan Powers; Episode #4 - “Changing Leadership & Futurecasting the Industry with Michael Dominguez,” with guests Michael Dominguez & Shannon DeSouza. In our first half our host Megan Powers, from Powers of Marketing, discussed news with event technology industry colleague Shannon DeSouza. Initially they discuss how climate change is actually an opportunity for making money. The importance of providing some relief for the planet (our industry is one of the biggest offenders of waste and affecting the planet as a result, which we will talk about in episode 5) can not be overstated, but money talks! We also discuss how “highjacking” our attendees phones in the sessions at our meetings is a way to get them more engaged, and all that goes with that (resistance included). In the second half of the show our very “in demand” guest Michael Dominguez does not predict all of the future, but gives great insights for where our industry is currently, and what to consider moving forward (it’s actually a very tough time to make “predictions,” as he explains). He’s in a new role at Associated Luxury Hotels International (ALHI), so he explains why he made the BIG switch from MGM to ALHI, and shares a bit about how the independent hotel experience (brands) is different from the rest of the hotel industry.
Inside Events Podcast, hosted by Megan Powers; Episode #3 - “The State of the Meetings & Events Industry with a Key Leader,” with guests Christy Lamagna & Annette Gregg. In our first half our host Megan Powers, from Powers of Marketing, discussed the news with Christy Lamagna. Some big news was announced during IMEX America, including Event Manager Blog being acquired by Skift, and Annette Gregg (guest for the show) having started in a new position at MPI Global as Senior VP of Experience that week. MeetingsNet came out with a great article on how we can use neuroscience-based tips to improve your attendees' learning, which tied into a session Megan attended on Smart Monday at IMEX. In the second half, our guest is Annette Gregg, Senior Vice President of Experience with Meeting Professionals International. Her many years of experience designing events, and educating event professionals positioned her perfectly for this position with MPI. Annette joined Megan and Christy onsite at IMEX in talking about Annette’s transition from being Chair-Elect (volunteer) to being staff now. We also talk through the state of the industry, the role technology plays in these experiences we create, and about the priority being placed on “women in events.”*****************************************************************************
We are so excited to have Jen Cole on the show today. Jen Cole is a Social Media Specialist and Community Manager. She is a co-founder of the social media marketing firm Depict Media based in Wichita Kansas. She is also the Community Manager for Social Media Examiner and produces their #smechat.
