Work that Network with Megan Powers

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2024 8:32

This episode was based on the following micro blog Megan wrote recently. It sparked some interest, so she decided to make it a quick solo show! Networking working. When I googled the definition of networking, the following came up: "the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts." And then when I looked on Dictionary.com, it said this: "a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest." I think the second definition is closer to the mark. Perhaps it still doesn't fully get there (for me) because it doesn't include the words consistently or regularly. Maybe in my brain it should also include - then what? But perhaps that is another word. What's a word for what you do after you have made those contacts? Working your network... Communication? Relationship-building? You see, I think if we have regularly or consistently continued to "work our network" or kept up with people, then folks are top of mind when opportunities come about. This week I (almost) simultaneously got a reach-out from a former colleague to catch-up and a message from a friend who has been looking for a job for a bit. The former colleague had a potential advisory/consulting opportunity for me... and my job-seeking friend was reminding me she was still out there looking. The timing of this caused me to look and see if the colleague's company had any job openings that might work for the job-seeker, and they did. Bingo! Now, I'm not saying that means this will be a perfect match and she will get hired, but we wouldn't know if I hadn't looked. Perhaps there is some serendipity involved here, but my point is that keeping in touch with former colleagues is a great idea - and not just when you need something. The more we stay top-of-mind, the more potential we have to help others and ourselves. Keep building those relationships by the random reach-out, by commenting on their posts, sharing their content... and always keep an open mind about how we can help each other! Work that network.  ~._.*._.~ Making a Marketer is brought to you by Powers of Marketing - providing exceptional podcast experiences & online and in-person events. Generative artificial intelligence has made a BIG splash over the past few months! Actually, it made big news with announcements from Google and Microsoft the week we recorded this episode about ChatGPT, in particular (recorded / multicasted on Feb. 9, 2023). "It's not something to be afraid of, but it's certainly something to be aware of. And I think all of us as content creators have a responsibility to understand how to differentiate ourselves from these tools." Indeed, how to differentiate human from machine... What that looks like or whether it's even necessary? This is something we will all be discussing and debating as these tools continue to emerge. We would love your feedback on this episode! Email megan @ powersofmarketing.com.  Dave's article: “The Rise of ChatGPT: Is This Retail's Stop Typing Moment?” Our guest Dave Bruno Dave has spent more than 30 years marketing technology to global retail and supply chain organizations. His resume includes stints with Aptos Retail, Blue Yonder, Red Prairie, and GERS. He has built his brand by helping businesses identify and take advantage of opportunities where technology intersects with industry challenges and consumer behaviors. And ChatGPT technology, despite all the hype and hyperbole, clearly has the potential to impact every business on the planet. He joins us today to help us separate the hype from the reality and see if there's really a there, there. Dave's book reco: ANYTHING written by Seth Godin. ~._.*._.~ We are "Making a Marketer"... in all ways.
