Tigran Gambaryan spent 8 months in grueling conditions in a Nigerian prison. But that's not what made him famous.Episode 52 of Beyond the Code dives into Tigran's incredible journey. For those of you who don't know, Tigran started off as an IRS special agent, where he used a simple Excel spreadsheet to reverse engineer the Bitcoin blockchain and track major crypto criminals such as those responsible for the Mt. Gox hack, Welcome to Video, Alpha Bay and Silk Road —earning him the nickname, “the man who broke Bitcoin”. After a decade in Government law enforcement, Tigran took up a pivotal role at Binance leading their financial crimes unit and fostering global regulatory ties. Tigran's story is one of innovation and grit, as chronicled in Andy Greenberg's Tracers in the Dark. But things took a turn for the worse for Tigran when he made a trip to Nigeria last February and what was supposed to be a simple training session spiraled into detention, interrogation, and bribes and imprisonment, exposing systemic corruption. After 8 grueling months in Nigeria's Kuje prison, through media pressure and U.S. diplomatic efforts, Tigran's release was finally secured and thankfully he is now home with his family.

The trip that changed Tigran Gambaryan's life forever was supposed to be short — just a few days. When he flew to Nigeria in February of 2024, he didn't even check a bag. Tigran is a former IRS Special Agent. He made his name investigating high-profile dark web and cryptocurrency cases. Some colleagues called him the 'Crypto Wizard' because of his pioneering work tracing crypto transactions for law enforcement. Since 2021, he's worked at the world's largest crypto exchange, Binance.Tigran was in Nigeria as a sort of envoy. He was supposed to meet with government officials and show them that Binance – and crypto itself – was safe, reliable, and law-abiding.One of the most important meetings was at the headquarters of the Office of the National Security Advisor. He says officials there made him wait hours. And when officials finally came into the room, they accused Binance of a host of crimes and of tanking the Nigerian economy. They then told Tigran that they weren't going to let him leave Nigeria until they were satisfied that Binance was going to remedy the situation. On today's show, in a collaboration with Click Here from Recorded Future News, we hear about Tigran's eight month detention in Nigeria. In his first recorded interview after his release, he shares details about his captivity, how he survived one of Nigeria's most infamous prisons, and how he got out.Support our show and hear bonus episodes by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or on npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Tigran Hamasyan is considered one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists/composers of his generation. A piano virtuoso with groove power, Hamasyan seamlessly fuses potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. Born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987, his musical journey began in his childhood home, where he was exposed to a diverse array of musical influences leading to him playing piano at the age of three, performing in festivals and competitions by the time he was eleven, and winning the Montreux Jazz Festival's piano competition in 2003. He released his debut album, World Passion, in 2004 at the age of seventeen. The following year, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Additional albums include New Era; Red Hail; A Fable, for which he was awarded a Victoires de la Musique (the equivalent of a Grammy Award in France); Shadow Theater; and Luys i Luso which featured the Yerevan State Chamber Choir focusing on Armenian sacred music stretching stylistically from the 5th century to the 20th century. His Nonesuch debut, Mockroot (2015), won the Echo Jazz Award for International Piano Instrumentalist of the Year; subsequent records for the label include An Ancient Observer (2017) the companion EP, For Gymuri (2018), Revisiting the Film (2021) and most recently StandArt (2022). Hamasyan was awarded the Deutscher Jazzpreis international category in Piano/Keyboards in 2021. Hamasyan has released records on France's Plus Loins, Universal France, Nonesuch and ECM. Hamasyan's new conceptual album “The Bird of a Thousand Voices” was released in August 2024 on Naïve/Believe – his debut with the label. Tigran composed, scored, and arranged the much-anticipated project blending its traditional folk footprints with rock influences. The first single from the album “The Kingdom” can also be experienced as an interactive game at www.bird1000.com. The recently released double album is inspired by an ancient Armenian tale in which a hero travels into unseen realms to find and bring back a mythical bird – whose thousand different songs will awaken people again and bring harmony to the world. The transmedia music theater piece ‘The Bird of a Thousand Voices', an intriguing immersive light installation with shadow play, digitally programmed voices, live music, and an Armenian-English libretto, premiered at the Holland Festival in June 2024. In addition to awards and critical acclaim, Hamasyan has built a dedicated following worldwide, as well as praise from Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau and the late Chick Corea. “With startling combinations of jazz, minimalist, electronic, folk and songwriterly elements…Hamasyan and his collaborators travel musical expanses marked with heavy grooves, ethereal voices, pristine piano playing and ancient melodies. You'll hear nothing else like this” (NPR)

In the wake of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, a fascinating migration pattern has emerged. Armenia and Georgia, nestled in the heart of the South Caucasus, have become havens for Russian and Ukrainian migrants. The influx of these new players in the cultural scene has set off a seismic ripple across the region. Who are these cultural actors? What stories do they bring with them? How have their artistic foot-prints transformed the local cultural canvas? Tigran Amiryan, founder and president of the Cultural and Social Narratives Laboratory, joins us today. As a semiologist and contemporary culture researcher, he unravels the threads of transformational processes in Armenia and Georgia. The recent suicide of a queer Armenian teenager shook many in Armenia, with activists accusing the authorities of lacking the sensitivity or willingness to help queer victims of abuse or bullying. In the absence of any legislation to protect them, queer people in Armenia are frequently subjected to discrimination and violence in Armenia, including in their own homes. GM Melik Khachiyan is a top player and former chess Olympian. He is also a trainer who has taught many future GMs and has coached the US Women's national team for many years. Despite his many successes, Melik had never won a US Championship of his own…until this year. In 2023, Melik beat out many higher-rated U.S. legends to comfortably win the U.S. Senior Championship! In our conversation, Melik takes us behind the scenes of the games and opening preparation, and his training regimen during the weeks leading up to the tournament. Melik thinks that he was propelled to victory by a couple of decisions in particular: 1) a focus on physical fitness and 2) his staying active in competitive chess. Melik always has lots of chess knowledge to impart, but his recent successes highlight the importance of perseverance, both at and away from the board. And of course, as GM Levon Aronian's childhood coach, and a former student of World Champion Tigran Petrosian, Melik always has a few stories to share. When he was just a guy offering services to clients, no one believed he could do it. That prompted him to create his YouTube channel to prove he had it. YouTube has become his portfolio. He admits that no matter what you do to showcase the good stuff, you will likely face criticism. Nevertheless, he continued to share with others what he knew. He created a Mastermind group to help landscapers build their dreams across the country. Today's guest crosses boundaries. He has spoken at many events and owns a multimillion-dollar landscaping company in California. His YouTube channel helps landscapers and their clients understand landscaping by providing them with information. Through his mastermind class called the goat gang, he has also been able to help many small business owners reach their targets. Tune in as I talk with Tigran Gertz about what happens behind the scenes of his business—learning what this wise man says might benefit you and your business. “I did not start a YouTube channel to become a YouTuber; I started a YouTube channel because people didn't believe me that I could do their job.” - Tigran Gertz Why do you have to listen to today's episode. 00:16 - “He has a multimillion-dollar landscaping operation. You might have seen his YouTube videos where he not only shows you the entire process of how they install the luxury outdoor living spaces to the maximum, but he also shows you the before the after he shows the mistakes that he makes in his business and how he quickly solves them and its high value.” Introduction to today's guest 4:21 - “That was really fun. I was actually very nervous about the and, here is a little inside scoop about how that happened. Grant went on an Instagram with me, he goes Instagram Live, and you can invite someone, and you could do an Instagram live with them for, like, a few minutes. And he did that. He invited me on.” Tigran Gertz explains how he got invited to a live interview with Grant Cardone. 9:03 - “One thing I told you is that I get a tremendous amount of sleep every day. A lot of people think that that is the opposite way of being successful, but they say sleep for hours to get more work done. But most of the time, people that sleep for hours, they're not productive. And when you're very well rested and very awake and alert, you're able to get more work done, and you're more cognitive. So sleep for me is huge. As Tigran Gertz explains, sleep is important and benefits a person's well-being and productivity. 11:53 - “One thing that he pointed out was that the reason they're losing respect for me is that when you work alongside your employees, they become your coworkers, and you start making jokes, and you start making comments.” According to Tigran, you must establish a boundary between yourself and your employees to maintain respect between them and you. 13:57 - “I did not start a YouTube channel to become a YouTuber; I started a YouTube channel because people didn't believe me that I could do their job.” According to Tigran, his YouTube channel showcases his ability to walk the talk. As a result, his YouTube channel has become his portfolio. 14:54 - “People come to me, and they say I'm a bad person. I'm an idiot. And the beginning, I always used to try to prove my point and try to prove them wrong. I'm like, No, I'm not I'm really good person. But then I just realized haters are inevitable.” Whatever you do, no matter how you explain. Putting yourself out there, especially on social media, is always risky, regardless of how good you are. You will inevitably get negative feedback from haters. 20:10 - “It's really difficult to get someone's attention with a very good positive video very like. Usually, the more negative the video is, the better it will do. It's crazy because, well, we'll look at the News. The news is super negative. And that just goes to show, especially in the 2020 era, we had just a whole bunch of negativity, and people are glued to the screen. And that's when I felt like humanity was definitely at its lowest.” Whether or not something is said to trigger haters is the difference between being a jackass and just saying something. 25:59 - “It's very difficult to stand up to a customer when they say, Johnny, I want you to do it for this price, you Tom $1,000. And they're like, No, you need to do it for 700. And it's almost like they're doing you a favor by giving you work.” According to Keith and Tigran, the key to surviving bad offers is knowing how much you're worth. 34:58 - “I've always attracted really good people in my life. And that only happened when I started making good decisions. When I was a dirtbag. I was a shitbag; I was doing bad things, and I was attracting bad people. And a lot of people might wonder. They might sit there. Listen, there might wonder, why can't I catch a break because your decisions are garbage? You keep making the wrong decisions.” Avoid making the same mistakes by choosing the right decision for yourself. 38:37 - “A lot of lessons happen from mistakes. But the smart thing to do is learn from other people's mistakes. So you don't have to do that.” Here's an advice from Tigran that everyone should heed. 44:45 - “The only way you can have sanity and landscaping because there are so many variables is to keep track of everything.” Looking at your business's history is important to understand what went wrong. 49:00 - “Sometimes it is not only the customer's decision to hire you, but it is also my decision to if I don't like the person, but I also don't want to do business with them. If I don't have a good relationship, or we have a good vibe, they seem like they're just trying not to get me. I don't want to do business with them. I'll just say no.” When determining whether you and a customer are a right fit, sometimes it's not the customer who chooses that. You will base it on your assessment of the client. Then you can decide whether to accept the offer or not. 51:21 - “I don't really care about design. Taylor is a very good designer. I don't need to learn, I just need to trust him and just continuously give him leads, give him leads, give him leads, and he will close the deals and move forward. What I need to do is focus on marketing and closing deals, that's it.” The whole world does not need to be learned. The only thing you need to do is trust your employees to do the job for you. You hired them to perform a particular task that you couldn't do, so you could focus on your specialty, which is growing your business. Key Takeaways “I've always attracted really good people in my life. And that only happened when I started making good decisions. When I was a dirtbag.
