In this episode of Better Buildings for Humans, host Joe Menchefski welcomes back Alejandra Menchaca of AIRLIT Studio for an insightful deep dive into TEDI—Thermal Energy Demand Intensity. As a repeat guest, Alejandra shares her expertise in sustainable and human-centric design, making complex concepts accessible. Together, they unpack the significance of TEDI, distinguishing it from metrics like Energy Use Intensity (EUI) and exploring how it informs passive building design. Alejandra explains why TEDI is a crucial metric in Massachusetts' stretch energy code, its role in Passive House certification, and its implications for building resilience and grid capacity as electrification accelerates. Listeners will also learn about the challenges of balancing energy efficiency with human-centric design, as Alejandra dispels misconceptions and highlights the metric's potential to harmonize sustainability with occupant well-being. Don't miss this comprehensive guide to designing better, smarter buildings. Where to Find Ale Menchaca: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alejandramenchaca https://www.design.upenn.edu/people/alejandra-menchaca About Ale Menchaca: Alejandra is a Principal at Airlit Studio, an environmental design consulting practice with a design-minded approach rooted in technical excellence. Alejandra combines expertise in mechanical engineering and building science to give clients a clear understanding of the impact design strategies and innovative solutions have on long-term building performance. Alejandra leverages research and simulations to provide project teams with sustainable design knowledge and energy expertise. With a Ph.D. in natural ventilation, she is experienced in designing passive buildings. In addition to her interest in passive solutions, Alejandra also has extensive experience with energy-intensive buildings such as laboratories and healthcare facilities having worked as an in-house building scientist at Payette for four years. Her experience also includes a focus on the power of early design analytics, gained during her tenure as a consultant at Thornton Tomasetti, where she built their Boston-based sustainability group. Lastly, Alejandra's expertise also includes thermal comfort, energy modeling, daylighting, and computational fluid dynamics. Ale is passionate about early design building science: assisting design teams with analytics and reports that impact design outcomes. She is a co-founder of Project StaSIO, a community of building performance simulators (consultants, architects, in-house building scientists) that strives to teach others how to ask the right building analytics questions and convey the results in ways that are beautiful and impactful. Highly committed to growing the next generation of sustainability-focused designers and engineers, Ale loves teaching. She has lectured at MIT and the Harvard GSD, where she's had the good fortune to mentor several brilliant students who have become inspiring disruptors in the building simulation industry.
Listen to Ps Ray Menchaca as he teaches us on the importance of changing and allowing the Lord to transform our lives instead of us conforming to the things of the world.God didn't come just to make bad people good; He came to bring new life. God has the power to transform a hardened heart into one full of compassion, to replace a troubled mind with the mind of Christ, and to turn a selfish nature into a selfless one.To change, we first need to see ourselves through God's mercy, as Paul says in Romans 12:1-2: we are urged to live as a “living sacrifice,” transformed by a renewed mind. Real change begins when we understand God's deep, passionate love for us, as shown throughout Scripture. While we were still sinners, God sent Christ to die for us so we could receive the gift of eternal life. This unending love is the starting point of our transformation.Steps to Change:- In View of God's Mercy: Understand the depth of God's love and mercy toward us. Knowing we're loved beyond measure allows us to live with a new perspective.- Guard Your Mind: Focus on what aligns with God's truth, not the distractions of the world. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:5 and Colossians 3:2, bring every thought captive to Christ and keep your focus on heavenly things.- Guard Your Heart: Proverbs 4:23 tells us to protect our heart above all, as it is the source of life. Our heart's direction often determines our actions.- Be Filled with the Holy Spirit: Ephesians 5:18 calls us to be continually filled with the Spirit, allowing God's power to work within us daily.Real change comes by allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us. It takes time, prayer, and a continual turning of our hearts and minds toward God. So, are you willing to open your life to this transformation?
As I shared earlier, I'm on a needed podcasting break, so I'm sharing some listener favorite episodes. This week's replay is “How to live your dream life abroad, with Vanessa Menchaca-Wachtmeister.” Vanessa Menchaca-Wachtmeister is living her dream life in Europe, and she has made a career out of helping others do the same. In this episode, we talk through how to transplant your career—essentially, how to do the same thing you're doing now, but in another area. We discuss practical steps to move abroad, how to set expectations, and the mindset needed to successfully move to another country. We also cover Vanessa's fifteen income streams (!) and how she is working hard now to secure her financial future. Vanessa and I are in different life stages. She's younger than I, without kids, and in the phase of hustle and build. I remember so well the stage of building, and I love that while Vanessa is able to bring a different perspective than I have, we connect on so many aspects of this beautiful, challenging, wild, unpredictable, amazing life that is location independence. This week's episode features the incredibly talented actor, writer, and director, MARC MENCHANCA. Marc was one of the first directors to ever hire me as a cinematographer, bringing me on board to shoot his debut feature, THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE. Marc wrote, directed, and starred in the film back in 2013. It played SXSW in competition and then went on to a small theatrical run. That film was the starting point for a long friendship and frequent collaboration over the years. Marc was one of the first "real" actors that I ever had a chance to direct and I've been incredibly fortunate to learn from many on set experiences with him. Marc is an actor by trade and he has had an incredible run over the past 5-7 years. Most notably he played RUSS LANGMORE on OZARZ, creating a nuanced and complex portrait of a man in crisis. He played JACK HOSKINS on HBO's THE OUTSIDER as well as roles on White House Plumbers, American Rust, Homeland, Black Mirror, Hawaii-Five-O, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jack Ryan, and GENERATION KILL. I invited Marc into our writer's group to speak about the script from the perspective of an actor - what they're looking for, how they imagine the roles after those first read-throughs, and what collaboration between writers and actors might look like. Especially in light of the SAG strike, this episode - recorded in our writer's group in early 2020 - has only felt more relevant to the current climate.
