Mexican immigration authorities have broken up two small migrant caravans headed to the U.S. border, activists said Saturday. Some migrants were bused to cities in southern Mexico, and others were offered transit papers. The action comes a week after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatened to slap 25% tariffs on Mexican products unless the country does more to stem the flow of migrants to the U.S. border. On Wednesday, Trump wrote that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had agreed to stop unauthorized migration across the border into the United States. Sheinbaum wrote on her social media accounts the same day that “migrants and caravans are taken care of before they reach the border.” Migrant rights activist Luis García Villagrán said the breaking-up of the two caravans appeared to be part of “an agreement between the president of Mexico and the president of the United States.”

Mexican authorities have warned that migrant caravans heading for the U.S. are being "extorted" by the notorious Venezuelan crime syndicate Tren De Aragua (TDA). TDA, which Texas Governor Greg Abbott has designated as a terror group, is smuggling migrants, sex trafficking, drug trafficking and carrying out murder for hire and extortion, according to Border Report, which cited officials in Mexico. "They developed a co-dependence with organized criminal groups," Chihuahua Public Safety Secretary Gilberto Loya said, according to the report. "We detected this here when we began to have a large number of migrant kidnappings and extortion—from people who came in the caravans and migrants who arrived by themselves to Juarez. "The local groups began utilizing them to carry out the extortion. We also began to see them adapt with the local cartels to carry out kidnapping and sex-trafficking."

A new migrant caravan is currently en route to the US border, comprised of people from various parts of the world who intend to enter the United States without proper documentation. This caravan is estimated to consist of approximately 10,000 individuals, with a significant portion falling within the 18 to 25-year-old military age group. Both the Border Patrol and various US intelligence agencies have issued bulletins, expressing concerns about potential members of Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist groups possibly being within the caravan. A group of approximately 9,500 migrants crossed the border between Guatemala and Mexico with plans to head to the United States, an organizer of the group told Fox News. The group consists mainly of migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. The migrants are counting on President Joe Biden to cancel the Title 42 coronavirus protection protocol put in place during the Trump administration.
