Jim Willfred is a man with extensive life experiences that have fueled his insatiable passion to help those afflicted with substance use disorders and to support other parents in avoiding the pain of losing a child as he has. Jim struggled with substance use disorder for 20 years until he broke free in 2004. He was honored with the Individual Achievement Award by Governor Bond for his ability to utilize help from government agencies to rebuild his life. Jim was invited to speak before 500 government agency workers, emphasizing the importance of their work. Additionally, Jim was asked by the HeadStart organization to attend a weekend conference in Kansas City and then return to St. Louis to run a mentoring program, teaching fathers how to be effective parents. In 2005, he joined the Carpenters Union, spending 20 years as a Millwright. In 2006, just two years after overcoming substance use disorder, Jim purchased his first home and, for the next 16 years, housed people with substance use disorders in his own home. In 2018, Jim founded "A Second Chance at Life." However, this endeavor faced significant challenges, including financial devastation and the loss of five immediate family members within a year. On June 20, 2023, Jim's son, Austin, was poisoned by fentanyl. This tragedy, combined with his life experiences and immense passion, led Jim to reinstate "A Second Chance at Life." He completely revised the company's vision, now working not only for sober living homes but also for advocacy, legislative change, drug prevention education, and coalition building and collaboration. Though it is too late to save his own child, Jim dedicates his efforts to saving other children. https://asecondchanceatlife.org/ HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. In this week's episode, Beau chats with Weston Spencer who you might know from his company Salt City Steel or his product the picket master pro. He chats about how he got into welding because of his dad who worked for years as a diesel mechanic. Then in one of his first welding jobs, he worked making ornamental handrails and gates. Having to space out pickets he knew there had to be a tool to make it easier to get your spacing right, and when struggling to find something like it, he made the picket master pro. He also talks about his work as a Millwright at a ski resort, fixing all kinds of equipment, and solving problems with welding. Caleb Branson and Shelby Redcorn are the owners of a business that is essential to keep production agriculture going in the U.S. and to keep their small community functioning in the Panhandle of Oklahoma where they live. Caleb has been operating cranes since he was a child, and both he and Shelby have been self-employed for their entire lives. Neither of them know anything different than getting paid when there is work and tightening the belts when there is not. In 2017 they started C&S Crane And Steel, offering a myriad of services to farmers and other industries. From building grain storage facilities to replacing augers on bins, it is this, behind the scenes business, that is there to keep farmers going. During the interview I asked what motivates a farmer to build their own grain storage facility, and, as you would expect, it was all about giving the farmer the best chance of creating a sustainable business. But those facilities and other pieces of equipment like them could not be built if it weren't for entrepreneurs like Shelby and Caleb who have the expertise and took the risk to purchase the equipment that provides their community the ability to continually improve their operations. There is folklore surrounding the American Farmer that brings with it a certain prestige, and deservedly so. We are all standing on someone's shoulders, and without folks like Shelby and Caleb, American Agriculture just couldn't operate and feed the world the way that it does.

Today's guest is another awesome ambassador for KickAss Careers. Her name is Kate Parr and she’s an industrial mechanic millwright in Ontario Canada. Coming from a family of university graduates, she never pictured herself in the trades. She always got good grades and was an excellent student. So naturally she was always told she was “too smart” for trade work. She knew herself better than that though. Always learning best doing hands on work, she dedicated herself to learning trade work. Her intelligence certainly comes to light in this episode when we discuss everything from the perception of the trades, to what can be done to change it, to how it can be used to live your definition of success. As for her definition of success: a career that allows her to be independent, happy, and challenged.

Continuing my Skills ON series here is an interview with one of the most jaw dropping stories I have ever come across heading into a career. It truly reinforces my belief that everyone's story is special and unique and should be shared. Nathan shares his journey with us. It takes no time at all to realize that his resolve and dedication have served him as foundations to his continued success and growth as a tradesperson and just all around awesome guy!
Today I joined forces with three of my favorite women from the Connecticut food scene. Kristin Eddy is an accomplished pastry chef that works her culinary magic for such establishments as Millwright's, Cook and the Bear and Porron and Pina. Winter Caplanson is the mastermind, photographer and writer behind Connecticut Food and Farm Magazine. Carrie Carella is the Connecticut Cupcake Queen and founder/owner of Middletown's NoRA Cupcake Company. I sit down with these awesome women to discuss something we do not have in common... and that is being a successful woman! Each one of these women has a firm grip on their profession and I get a glimpse into what it takes to be a respected, professional, business minded woman in todays cutthroat and ever changing food service/restaurant biz. Intro/Outro music is a track titled "12/12/12" and it is a secret song you can only hear if you purchased the "Dry Aged" tape that was released Feb 24th. If you want one send me a smoke signal and wire transfer.

For the years that I've known Hope, we've predominately been juxtaposed in our ambitions. I've predominately considered her dominate, outspoken, competitive, assertive, with an undertone of nurturing qualities. This is juxtaposed to my disposition of submissive, passive, overtly nurturing, empathetic, and lacking a competitive desire. This is what I found interesting and relative in the exploration of equality in America.

In continuing the series of the North American Sasquatch Researcher, Nite Callers Bigfoot Radio will be interviewing Mark Green from the state of Alabama. Mark Green is 46 yrs old and was born and raised in Central Alabama. Working as a Millwright in an auto manufacturing plant and a local farmer, he is the father of three children, a Christian family man and Freemason in his community. Mark spends his free time hunting ,fishing and camping. He also has an interest in history and bigfoot research. Mark got into bigfoot research after he had a sighting in January of 2007 while hunting in Lowndes County Alabama. Like many who have had such an experience, Mark started looking on web for information on Bigfoot. He found the Alabama Bigfoot Research web site and contacted Mike McLain about his sighting. An experienced researcher by the name of Tal Branco contacted Mark and took his report . Some weeks later Tal called Mark and asked him about a small community that was having sightings and ask how close he was to that place where Mark lived only 10 miles from this active location. Tal Branco joined Mark and another friend on a private hunting lease in the area where they experienced vocals and other activity that spurred Mark into full time research. Mark Green has continued his search for Bigfoot with different groups and has been involved in numerous sightings since 2007. Nite Callers Bigfoot Radio is honored to bring you this very interesting researcher, Mr. Mark Green from Alabama.
