Where Matt Louis's previous book MISSION TRANSITION  focused on transitioning servicemen and women by giving them an essential career-change guide for avoiding false starts and making optimal career choices following active duty.   Matt's new book HIRING VETERANS flips to the other side of the same coin and focuses on the organizations and companies hiring said veterans.   Every year, about a quarter of a million veterans leave the military - most of whom are unprepared for the transition. These service members have developed incredible leadership, problem-solving, and practical skills that are underutilized once they reach the civilian world, a detriment to both themselves and society.   HIRING VETERANS makes the clear case for the value of employing members of today's military community. Veterans represent a real-time talent pool of experienced, trained, and dedicated professionals that, when properly harnessed, comprise an instant means of improving a company's competitiveness and productivity. Case studies of organizations both large and small clearly demonstrate how leveraging a veteran talent-based strategy is a business imperative resulting in organizational growth.   Matt is also the President of Purepost, a next-generation staffing solution and public benefits corporation whose goal is to level the playing field in the nation's talent market.   Purepost - https://www.purepost.co/   Matthew Louis - https://matthewjlouis.com/   Hiring Veterans - https://matthewjlouis.com/hiring-veterans/   Mission Transition - https://matthewjlouis.com/mission-transition/   Support this podcast:   Thank you to our sponsor: Tobacco Free Adagio Health: https://tobaccofree.adagiohealth.org/   The Scuttlebutt is now on Wreaths Across America Radio. Mission Transition is a practical career-change guide for transitioning veterans avoid false starts and make optimal career choices following service. Every year, about 200,000 veterans leave the military, most of whom are grossly unprepared for life after service. While well intentioned, Transition Assistance Programs and other support structures within the armed forces often leave veterans fending for themselves. On top of this, veterans themselves are typically so focused on their active duty roles that they're unprepared to join the civilian world. Mission Transition guides military personnel through the entire process of making a successful move into civilian professional life. The process starts with foundational ideas, like understanding who you are and who you want to be. Readers will then explore strategies to make their résumés stand out, effectively network, ace the interview, and negotiate an optimal compensation package. Finally, Mission Transition discusses ways to acclimate to the new culture and pay it forward to other veterans. Each chapter includes advice from other veterans, illustrations of key concepts, summaries, and suggested resources. KEY TAKEAWAYS • 10 invaluable skills that veterans can leverage in a competitive business environment • How to re-frame your questions to change your perspective on the career search process • The Mission Transition process: 1. Identify who you are: discovering your strengths, personality type, and related career paths 2. Understand who you want to be: identifying your practical career path options and their required skill sets 3. Define your career preferences and personal brand: identifying industry/role preferences and lifestyle factors to help narrow your focus 4. Get your resume into fighting shape: translating your strengths, experiences, and skills into the right content & format for each prospective employer 5. Document your network: defining the purpose & process of networking, and debunking military myths surrounding networking 6. Engage the network: powerful storytelling tactics (and common mistakes) in growing and engaging your network 7. Apply for roles: the difference between Federal and civilian application processes 8. Interview for roles: preparing for, conducting, and following up on interviews 9. Close the deal: understanding your financial needs, negotiating and finalizing your job offer 10. Acclimate, assimilate and pay it forward: defining YOUR success, finding new meaning in your work, joining support networks Phone: 855-277-5277 PO 127 Mattawan, MI 49071 InterviewValet.com   ABOUT 7 EAGLE GROUP Every business benefits from hiring veterans, be it for tax incentives, workplace environment, or company performance. Perfect order characterizes all their movements. The more closely we imitate the harmony and order of the angelic host, the more successful will be the efforts of these heavenly agents in our behalf. If we see no necessity for harmonious action, and are disorderly, undisciplined, and disorganized in our course of action, angels, who are thoroughly organized and move in perfect order, cannot work for us successfully. They turn away in grief, for they are not authorized to bless confusion, distraction, and disorganization. All who desire the cooperation of the heavenly messengers, must work in unison with them. Those who have the unction from on high, will in all their efforts encourage order, discipline, and union of action, and then the angels of God can co-operate with them. Herb had a successful military career in which became the only person ever to earn the Green Beret and Army Drill Sergeant of the Year award. Finishing up his military career he had doubts about leaving the military and becoming a civilian. The Army was the only thing he knew since enlisting at the age of 17. Like most veterans, the transition process was not easy for him, and he had bad days filled with self-doubt. However, after over 2,000 informational interviews, thousands of hours of internet research, and hundreds of hours of personal reflection, he found his way. He landed a job at a top-tier Management Consulting firm and a seat in the Executive MBA program at Cornell University. In his free time, Herb has mentored hundreds of transitioning service members.   Herb wrote the very popular book The Mission Transition. This book is for military members who are transitioning into the civilian world, maybe now and in the future. This book is not a checklist to follow for a soft landing upon exiting the military. There is no possible checklist, every service member’s situation is unique. What Herb has done is lay out a different approach and way of thinking for the transition. Instead of teaching you what to think he opens your eyes with how to think about the transition. Herb doesn’t sugar coat the process but reveals his failures in transition and demonstrates vulnerability with personal anecdotes from hanging up his uniform. The reality of transition. The hard questions you need to answer. Techniques to be successful. Ways to succeed and others destined for failure. Herb is also an ambassador of Green Marines. The Green Marines believe we need stop relying on the Government and corporations to make changes on our behalf. We need to stand up and take account of our own actions, our own choices. Be responsible for our own future and make changes from the base up. This is a generation where the peoples voice is stronger than ever, and we have the potential to make real changes that matter. The Green Marines welcome everyone and celebrate them at their best. We help others get out and reconnect with the planet one micro mission at a time. The Green Marines provide inspiration, aspiration and education all in one place. We advocate and encourage positive solutions to modern life. We believe in small, impactful action and that small steps aggregate to make global change. The Green Marines provide micro solutions from across a diverse community of advocates. We don’t preach or push green values. We don't attempt to create change by shouting, blaming, or indicting the actions of others. The Green Marines are not haters, we are the positive media. We build a community with a common goal and drive to make life better, not in a ‘hold hands around a tree’ kind of way but through micro action, adventure and respect for the environment. We don't talk about all going off grid tomorrow. We advocate bending the current trend away from anonymity and back towards a positive future. Matthew J. Louis is an expert in career transition for veterans and public service professionals. He coaches individuals on their transition efforts and advises employers on hiring programs designed to successfully assimilate these valuable talent pools. He is the author of the forthcoming book Mission Transition, a practical guide for veterans in transition and their employers. In this conversation, we had a chance to hear some of his advice from the book, through the lens of his own transition story which began in the mid 90's with business school. When I reflect on the conversations I've had with other officers about what to do outside of the military, I struggle to imagine a more successful or competitive path than that which Matthew has followed throughout his career. His perspective on transition is also a compelling approach to career management and self-promotion in general, and follows a deliberate model to walk job-seekers through the process. I was also surprised at how closely his advice aligns with the advice I've given other officers who were working with Bradley-Morris during their transition. Having seen a sneak peek of his manuscript, I found myself nodding my head as I was walking through his process step by step. If you're interested in learning more about his upcoming transition guide, check out this episode! If you want to learn more about where to find your copy, go to Matthew's website by clicking here.
