Being a trusted adviser to our affluent clients for over two decades, our wealth management philosophy—making life decisions before money decisions—is rooted in our experience of managing over S$1 billion worth of our clients' hard-earned assets. In this week's Money Wisdom episode, our co-host Isaac chats with Chris about the article that unexpectedly stirred up conversations across the advisory space. What began as an article meant to explain why Investment-Linked Policies (ILPs) are complex products that Providend chooses not to use for our clients, ended up sparking strong reactions within the industry—something that was not intended.Chris shares how the article took up quite a bit of his mind space as he reflected on both the criticism and the support it received. While some advisers disagreed, many consumers reached out expressing gratitude for the clarity it brought. Chris and Isaac also discuss how ILPs can open doors to both mis-selling and well-meaning recommendations and why understanding this nuance matters. For context, it is most helpful to read Chris' Business Times article here before tuning in to this conversation.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Isaac Ong, is a Client Adviser at Providend, the first fee-only wealth advisory firm in Southeast Asia and a leading wealth advisory firm in Asia. The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? “A lot of people have thought about happiness and what it means to have a good life, and I would subscribe to this: We only have one life to live, and what can we do that would outlast our lives in the next 50-60 years?”We are glad to share part three, the final episode of our Providend Conversation with Jeshua, a 28-year-old who travelled during the COVID-19 pandemic to over 50 countries, navigating through the uncertainty of vaccinations, all while working remotely and keeping costs low.In this episode, Jeshua shares his experiences in running his company, Crossworks – the first remote hiring company in Myanmar – and what inspired him to start it, even before the COVID-19 pandemic.Jeshua shares that whether you are a janitor or CEO, a storeman or an army officer, it is secondary to whether you are investing in others and living in a way that will move the needle of life in the right direction.“The value and uniqueness of every individual are important; we are not robots. It is easy to reduce people to a statistic or a label, but we should also take the right path, not the easy path. A good life is a life where you have sufficiently invested in the people around you.” – We couldn't agree more with Jeshua! If you are interested in finding out more about Crossworks, you can visit their website here.Once again, it has been a joy having Jeshua with us, and we hope you find his story as inspiring as we did.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? Welcome to the sixth episode of our miniseries on Finding Your Ikigai, where we invite a series of guests to explore what it truly means to live a good life, incorporating the concept of Ikigai alongside Providend's Philosophy of Sufficiency. As trusted advisers to affluent clients for over two decades, we've always advocated that clients prioritise life decisions before financial ones. These life decisions are what we refer to as “Ikigai” decisions. In this episode, our Founder and CEO, Christopher Tan, chats with Shulin, a lawyer turned recruiter and Managing Director at Aslant Legal, whose mission is to serve the legal community. She is also the host of the podcast After the Bar, where she interviews lawyers, former lawyers and other movers and shakers in the legal industry. Shulin reflects on her evolving understanding of Ikigai, using it to embrace her God given strengths and pursue what truly lights up her life while making a meaningful impact on others. She emotionally recalls grieving the loss of her “lawyer” title and shares that, while money was never her main motivator, she feels genuinely happy and fulfilled, something that cannot be measured in financial terms.Through deep conversations with our advisers, you will gain clarity on what matters most in life and what needs to be done to live a good life, both financially and non-financially—with your Ikigai goals at the forefront of your wealth plan.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? “It's not about the ability to retire but also how we utilise the time while we are on this planet. In the last three years, I was travelling with just one backpack. Every item I buy has to fit in that backpack. If I buy something new, it means that I have to give up something else.”We are back with part two of our Providend Conversation with Jeshua, a 28-year-old who travelled during the COVID-19 pandemic to over 50 countries, navigating through the uncertainty of vaccinations, all while working remotely and keeping costs low.In this episode, Jeshua opened up about his reasons for choosing to study at a polytechnic versus the junior college and university route and why he considered it a ‘shortcut' in his filmmaking and creative journey.Jeshua believes that education is really about learning, and for him, it's less about being in a ‘branded' education institution and having a certificate. He also shared how his parents reacted to the choices he made: “It wasn't like I was going to drop out of school to do drugs or join a gang.” In fact, he considers himself to have graduated from the “university of life”.His thoughts on ‘fitting everything into one backpack' is truly a wonderful depiction of life and something for us to think about – what really matters to us and what we should or should not carry in our own ‘backpack' in life and how to live the most meaningful life that we possibly can.It has been a joy having Jeshua with us, and we hope you find his story as inspiring as we did.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? Simon Pranaitis explores the use of money for the glory of God in his conclusion to the fourteen-week "Proof of Work" series. In this final lesson, we explore how money is God's good gift, designed to help us fulfill His purposes in our work and community. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture reveals that money is neither evil nor ultimate, but a tool to be stewarded faithfully under God's sovereignty. We address lingering questions about debt, tithing, and the role of gold and silver, showing how biblical principles guide our financial decisions. Above all, we are called to use money wisely and generously, doing all things to the glory of God. ★ Support this podcast ★

“Some of the guesthouses are closed due to the pandemic, so I had to pitch a tent along the road to stay a night.”In this three-part episode, we are joined by Jeshua, a 28-year-old who travelled during the COVID-19 pandemic to over 50 countries, in a span of three years! He navigated through the uncertainty of vaccinations and avoided quarantines & visa applications, all while he was working remotely and keeping costs low – with a total estimated spent of just US$3000.Jeshua has always been a proponent of working remotely, and this travel-experience was simply an extension of his belief. In fact, he found it ‘abnormal' to do what everyone else was doing. He shared: “The worse lesson we can pick up is that everything in life progresses in a sequence.”Through his travels, he discovered that there are more ways to define success than by being rich, such as generosity and happiness. It is important how we view others in the community and look out for one another. “If we become so developed and neglect those around us, we have lost the plot!” This is indeed a good reminder on what living a meaningful life is all about – the people around us.It has been a joy having Jeshua with us and we hope you find his story as inspiring as we did. Welcome to the fifth episode of our miniseries on Finding Your Ikigai, where we invite a series of guests to explore what it truly means to live a good life, incorporating the concept of Ikigai alongside Providend's Philosophy of Sufficiency. As trusted advisers to affluent clients for over two decades, we've always advocated that clients prioritise life decisions before financial ones. These life decisions are what we refer to as “Ikigai” decisions. In this episode, our Founder and CEO, Christopher Tan, sits down with two of his long time friends and army buddies, Han Kiat, an Associate Professor, and Maurice, an Accountant, to talk about all things ikigai and the role it plays in their lives. For Han Kiat and Maurice, choosing to serve in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) beyond the mandatory ten years was not just a commitment, it became their ikigai, a purpose they held closely for much of their early adult lives. Now as fathers, they reflect on their shared experiences, even as their sons serve in different vocations during their National Service. Does a different path diminish the value of their own ikigai? And how did they bridge the gap between those differences with their sons? They reflected on how simple, ordinary moments, and being there for one another over the years, can become something deeply meaningful and also part of their ikigai. You may find Han Kiat's full letter mentioned in the podcast here: https://providend.com/finding-ikigai-saf-fatherhood/Through deep conversations with our advisers, you will gain clarity on what matters most in life and what needs to be done to live a good life, both financially and non-financially—with your Ikigai goals at the forefront of your wealth plan.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? Welcome to the fourth episode of our miniseries on Finding Your Ikigai, where we invite a series of guests to explore what it truly means to live a good life, incorporating the concept of Ikigai alongside Providend's Philosophy of Sufficiency. As trusted advisers to affluent clients for over two decades, we've always advocated that clients prioritise life decisions before financial ones. These life decisions are what we refer to as “Ikigai” decisions. In this episode, our Founder and CEO, Christopher Tan, has a chat with Choon Jin, an accountant by training whose career has spanned corporate mergers and acquisitions, insurance leadership, and regional consulting, before making the leap into entrepreneurship and reflecting on the role of balancing different 'Ikigais' in his life.Choon Jin talks about how he began questioning what he truly wakes up for, leading to a career switch that better aligned with his values. He also shares that a turning point came when he had a heart attack while overseas, forcing him to confront not just his Ikigai at work, but also the need to prioritise another: his family.Through deep conversations with our advisers, you will gain clarity on what matters most in life and what needs to be done to live a good life, both financially and non-financially—with your Ikigai goals at the forefront of your wealth plan.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? “At 17, my goals were simply to make more money to afford regular meals like chicken rice.”The chairs are switched in this very special episode of The Providend Conversation: Living the Good Life, where we are honoured to have Michelle Martin in conversation with our CEO, Christopher. In this candid chat, he shares his personal life — speaking on money, family, career, parenting, and more.As the leading fee-only wealth advisory firm in Asia, we have always believed that financial planning should begin with life decisions, and not the other way around. This philosophy aligns closely with the definition of the “good life” as described in the book Repacking Your Bags by Richard J. Leider and David A. Shapiro: “living in the place you belong, with people you love, doing the right work, on purpose.”In this episode of The Providend Conversation, we hear from Christopher Tan, CEO of Providend. You may have heard him on the radio, seen him on television, or read his books on professional wealth advisory. But have you ever heard about his personal journey towards money mastery and financial wellness? There is also one fundamental philosophy that Chris strongly aligns with, which also shapes how we advise our clients at Providend: to first make life decisions before making financial decisions. This video is a joint production of iFAST TV and Providend, inspired by Christopher's article “To Live the Good Life, Make Life Decision First Before Wealth Decisions”. “I have my wife who is my pillar and rock, and also my little baby who can't say much but at least I can hug him after a long day from work, and I can then say: Okay, the day is good.”As the leading fee-only wealth advisory firm in Asia, we've always advocated for making life decisions before money decisions—especially when it comes to your hard-earned money. In this episode of “The Providend Conversation,” we're delighted to feature Jonathan Teoh, an architect by training and practice who gave up a well-paying job to start a socially conscious enterprise called AN LIVING. The initiative focuses on helping seniors enhance their financial security, aligning with Singapore's vision of becoming a “Nation for All Ages.” AN LIVING's goal is similar to the HDB Lease Buyback Scheme—but designed for private property homeowners with fully paid-up freehold or 999-year leasehold homes. In this interview, we learn more about Jonathan's upbringing, and the support that shaped his strong conviction to help seniors in Singapore enhance their financial security. This video is a joint production of iFAST TV and Providend, inspired by Christopher's article “To Live the Good Life, Make Life Decision First Before Wealth Decisions”. What really happens when someone passes away—and are you (or your family) prepared to handle it? In this episode of Women's Money Wisdom, Melissa Joy, CFP®, sits down with Rachel Donnelly, founder of Afterlight and author of Late to Your Own Funeral, to unpack the messy, often overwhelming world of death administration.Rachel shares her personal story of becoming executor for both her parents' estates—while working full-time and raising young children—and how that experience inspired her to build a business helping others avoid the same chaos. Together, Melissa and Rachel dive into the real work that goes beyond writing a will: handling assets, updating beneficiaries, navigating probate, and keeping bills paid when no one's watching. They discuss why so many women delay estate planning, the hidden landmines (like untitled assets and digital accounts), and how you can start untangling this intimidating topic with simple, practical steps. The conversation also tackles how to bring up these sensitive issues with family, why “co-anything” can backfire, and how to avoid turning a loved one's legacy into a logistical nightmare.Key Takeaways:Estate planning isn't just about legal documents—it's about full asset management and communication.Women are more likely to delay estate planning, often because they don't know where to start.Probate horror stories highlight why comprehensive planning matters.Digital assets (social media, crypto, email) need to be included in your plan.Choose roles (executor, trustee) carefully—co-roles can create more problems than they solve.Even imperfect action now is better than procrastinating and risking chaos later.Having the tough conversations with family now can save heartache and confusion later.Whether you're starting from scratch or fine-tuning your existing plan, this episode will give you the confidence to take action—because death is inevitable, but an administrative nightmare doesn't have to be.Learn more & connect with Rachel: Website: www.myafterlight.com Instagram: @myafterlight LinkedIn: Rachel Donnelly Book: Late to Your Own FuneralThe previous presentation by PEARL PLANNING was intended for general information purposes only. For those nearing retirement, they discuss whether it may be time to approach things differently to protect both your financial future and peace of mind.Tune in to the full episode for a grounded and thoughtful take on navigating uncertainty with clarity, focused on your non-negotiable life goals. Market volatility can be unsettling—but long-term financial success is rarely built on short-term reactions. In this episode of the Women's Money Wisdom podcast, Melissa Joy, CFP® addresses the emotional and financial challenges that often arise during market downturns. As markets enter bear territory, many investors may feel inclined to make significant changes to their portfolios.
