Newt talks with Jessica Hall, Executive Director of the American Eagle Foundation (AEF), located in Kodak, Tennessee. AEF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation, education, and protection of bald eagles and other birds of prey. Founded in the 1980s by passionate conservationists, AEF has played a significant role in the resurgence of the bald eagle population in the United States. The foundation operates the nation's largest bald eagle sanctuary near Dollywood Theme Park and is currently raising funds to build a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital. AEF also engages in educational outreach, including field trips and digital classrooms, to inspire the next generation of conservationists. The foundation's efforts have been supported by various events, including flying eagles at football games and veterans' events, which help raise awareness and foster a connection between the public and these majestic birds.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, all 48 states played a role in war mobilization and made unique contributions that reflected their histories, their politics, their natural resources and industries, and their military manpower. Kansas was a midwestern state that provided approximately 80,000 troops and, if not for his premature death, may also have provided its adopted son, “Fighting Fred” Funston, as the commander of the AEF instead of John J. Pershing. To discuss Kansas and World War I, the World War I Podcast hosted Blake Watson, author of Kansas and Kansans in World War I. Have a comment about this episode? Send us a text message!

“The circumstances under which we are spending this particular Christmas are unusual.” This is the story of the Christmases of World War I. Germans and British troops, singing carols together. French and German troops, kicking, playing sports and exchanging treats. It may not last, but for a brief moment–for Christmas of 1914–these opposing armies refuse the orders of their superiors as they temporarily “beat their swords into plowshares and spears into pruninghooks.” In the years ahead, the United States' forces have their own Christmas celebrations “over there.” In 1917, New York's Harlem Rattlers, or Hellfighters, sing and celebrate as they travel to France. In 1918, all ranks of the AEF–be they doughboys or Hello Girls–celebrate a post-armistice Christmas. We'll catch a speech by the president and a Christmas Bash at Black Jack Pershing's headquarters where George Patton eats way too much plum pudding. And then, we'll say goodbye to Black Jack. With a loving Christmas connection years down the road, it's time to lay him to rest with his beloved doughboys in Arlington. ____ 3 Ways to dive deeper into History That Doesn't Suck Join our growing facebook community Get our weekly newsletter, The Revolution Become part of the HTDS Patreon family Learn more about your ad choices. Prashanthan Sanders, MBBS, PhD, FHRS, of University of Adelaide is joined by guests Han S. Lim, MBBS, PhD, FHRS, of Austin and Northern Health, University of Melbourne, and Venkatakrishna N. Tholakanahalli, MD, FHRS, of Minneapolis VA Health Care System to discuss Atrioesophageal Fistula Rates Before and After Adoption of Active Esophageal Cooling During Atrial Fibrillation Ablation. This institutional review board (IRB)-approved study was a prospective analysis of retrospective data, designed before collecting and analyzing the real-world data. The number of AEFs occurring in equivalent time frames before and after adoption of cooling using a dedicated esophageal cooling device (ensoETM, Attune Medical) were quantified across 25 prespecified hospital systems. AEF rates were then compared using generalized estimating equations robust to cluster correlation. A total of 14,224 patients received active esophageal cooling during RF ablation across the 25 hospital systems, which included a total of 30 separate hospitals.   https://www.hrsonline.org/education/TheLead https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2405500X23006734?via%3Dihub https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pbrQyW9Yqf-da0KceRueP01kS9WIgwmK/view (Visual Aid)   Host Disclosure(s): P. On October 8, 1918, seventeen American soldiers of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 328th Infantry, 82nd Division flanked a German machine gun nest, surprising and capturing dozens of German soldiers. Acting Corporal Alvin York – a conscientious objector turned warrior – was credited with leading the squad and singlehandedly killing 20 Germans, knocking out 35 machine guns, and capturing 132. York later received the Medal of Honor for this action, and his exploits were forever immortalized in the 1941 movie Sergeant York, starring Gary Cooper. The World War I Podcast covered the story of York in an episode in 2017, but since then, there has been additional scholarship. What about the other sixteen members of the patrol? What role did they play in the action? Why is so little known about them? Is there more to the story? To answer these questions, the World War I Podcast welcomed James P. Gregory Jr. to the podcast. Gregory is a PhD candidate and the author of Unraveling the Myth of Sgt. York: The Other Sixteen.  Follow us: Twitter: @MacArthur1880 Amanda Williams on Twitter: @AEWilliamsClark Facebook/Instagram: @MacArthurMemorial www.macarthurmemorial.org

In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby tells the novel's narrator about his World War I military service and a particularly heroic engagement in the Argonne Forest. He ends his story by explaining: “I was promoted to be a major, and every Allied government gave me a decoration – even Montenegro, little Montenegro down on the Adriatic Sea.” The decoration he displays is the Order of Prince Danilo I. Fitzgerald's description of the award might not be the most accurate, but it is a real order and members of the AEF did receive it.  To discuss the order and it's AEF recipients, the World War I Podcast talked with Dr. Frank Blazich, Military History Curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.  Dr. Blazich is an expert on the AEF recipients of the Order of Prince Danilo I and is also a contemporary recipient of the award.  Follow us: Twitter: @MacArthur1880 Amanda Williams on Twitter: @AEWilliamsClark Facebook/Instagram: @MacArthurMemorial www.macarthurmemorial.org
