Send us a Text Message. In this episode of A Clear Voice, we speak with Dr Aaron Johnson about age-related changes to the larynx. Following a decade-long career as a professional classical singer and singing teacher, Dr Johnson trained to be a Speech and Language Pathologist. He now works at NYU Langone's Voice Centre and researches the effects of vocal training, voice use and ageing on the muscles of the larynx. We start by looking at the ageing process of the voice – how this differs for males and females related to hormonal changes and how other age-related changes to the body affect our voice. Dr Johnson then shares his experience as a singing teacher working with the ageing voice and how his own preconceptions were challenged as he saw first-hand the effect of vocal exercise on the ageing voice. This experience has made him passionate about sharing the message that getting older doesn't have to mean the inevitable decline of voice function and that there is something you can do about it. Likewise, he urges clinicians to not make assumptions about patients, as a lot can be done for the ageing voice to strengthen and improve function. We discuss some of Dr Johnson's recommended interventions and exercises based on his research into neuromuscular changes in the larynx as it ages. He shares his take on the most effective form of vocal exercise, focussing on endurance and intensity. He also emphasises the importance of ensuring that the voice remains active and in regular use as we age; “If you don't use it, you lose it.” Voice remains an important interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary field, and clear clinical and surgical interventions are also needed to improve muscle function and make this kind of exercise possible, and we touch on some of the established and emerging areas of treatment. In closing, Dr Johnson focuses on advocacy and the need to make people aware that voice doctors like him are out there and able to provide real support and improvement for those suffering from voice problems.Further information:Singing Through Change by Nancy Bos, Joanne Bozeman and Cate Frazier-Neely – looking at the singing voice in women going through menopausehttps://singingthroughchange.com/ Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) – an intensive voice therapy for individuals with Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions Contact InformationVisit www.britishlaryngological.org or download BLA Connect from your app store for further information and details on becoming a BLA member.Register for Cutting Edge Laryngology 2024, 2-4 October 2024, at the Royal Society of Medicine London, here. We are so excited to announce it is our first birthday. Yes, it is one year since we launched our very first episode of A Voice and Beyond and to celebrate this exciting milestone, we would like to share some brilliant highlights from our interview rounds, where our internationally acclaimed voice teachers and music artists offer their pearls of wisdom from lessons they have learned throughout their own personal and professional experiences in the music industry, in the teaching studio and beyond. Each guest shares with us their empowering words of advice, as they speak candidly about their own journeys of self-discovery, self-care and self-awareness. It is through these lessons, we can all learn and grow, reconnect with our most authentic selves, and discover our voices in song as well as life, so we too can empower others, including our students. It has been a real joy spending time with all my guests and I am truly grateful for their contribution to the show. 2021 is nearly over so it's time for Alexa Terry and Line Hilton to look back on the last year of The Singing Teacher's Talk Show and BAST Training as a whole. Listen in as Alexa and Line recap what we've all learned as vocal coaches in the last year with a little help from clips of some of the best guests since the podcast re-launch. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you're working with someone who has never looked inside of themselves to link their feelings to a location in the body, you need to first help them attune to themselves. How do you feel is such an important question and we need to make sure they know how to answer it. In terms of the health and wellbeing of a student, it's very important to build up trust and a safe environment for them to open up. There are so many medical or other factors that can cause issues with singing ability and knowing about them is the only way teachers can tackle them. Have a premade medical questionnaire for your students to fill out beforehand. The more you know going into any lessons then the better equipped you as a teacher can be. Also if you have a form that you can look at and discuss with them, it can make it less intimidating. Read through the BAST Singing and the Premenstrual Voice Blog, linked in the resources below. SWAT = Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. If you're a singing teacher starting your own business then note these things down. It's such a helpful tool in figuring out what you want and who you want to teach. This episode is dedicated to all those taking a stand in the #menopauserevolution Joanne Bozeman introduces herself to us: “I grew up in a musical home with lots of singing in our daily life, and great music playing on the stereo. I trained at University as a Classical Singer, and performed a wide range of repertoire in my community and regionally. My career as an independent singing teacher began when I was at university, and I was fortunate to work 26 years at a fine undergraduate conservatory. Now retired from academia. My long interest in hormones and female voice resulted in the book "Singing Through Change: Women's Voices in Midlife Menopause, and Beyond" (2020) co-authored with Nancy Bos and Cate Frazier-Neely. At present, not only are we in the midst of a global pandemic, but we are also in the midst of a mental health crisis and a social revolution that is affecting everyone globally, including those in our singing voice studios, the music industry and beyond. As a voice community I know we can do so much better. This episode is dedicated to all those who are being silenced and to ensure that we as a voice community are honouring all voices and creating safe spaces for everyone to be heard irrespective of race, gender, mental health concerns and professional standing within the music industry. I revisit interview rounds with Nancy Bos, Nadine Manion, Ashlie Amber, Chris Johnson, Dr Elizabeth Benson, and Donna Hughes who offer their pearls of wisdom as to how we, as voice teachers and other music industry personnel can improve our working and studio environments, and ensure that policies are being created to allow for freedom of voice, expressivity and authenticity. It is our hope, that these perspectives, stories and experiences will help to inspire change and encourage others to embark on their own journey of reflecting on their own biases and looking at how they can improve the industry culture your new normal. In this episode, we are joined by Nancy Bos and her journey with Menopause. By 2040 there will be approximately 1 BILLION people in menopause on the planet- and yet it can be even more difficult to talk about than periods. Aljolynn Sperber Founder of Lady Box (https://joinladybox.com/) and Alyx Coble-Frakes Founder of The Agenda. (https://www.theagendaperiod.com/) Are combining forces to help Women and Menstruators #ShedTheShame. Each day there are an estimated 800 million folks experiencing menstruation- so it should be something we can talk about openly and freely. Aljolynn conceptualized this campaign as a way to donate to WaterAid (check out the campaign -http://shedtheshame.co ) and this podcast is a way to further amplify the message. If you would like to participate in a future episode- check out the link here: https://lbcustomize.typeform.com/to/n... Help us #ShedTheShame. by sharing this video and talking about your own stories. Together we can make a huge difference in the fight for menstrual equity.
"Until recently, voice changes from menopause and aging have been almost unmentionable. If a woman talked about her challenges, especially if she was a professional singer, it could have meant decreased opportunities and even the end of her career. Most women have stayed silent, coping as best as they can, assuming that they have to deal with their baffling voice issues by themselves. But that is not the case. Millions of women around the world are on the same path, and we no longer need to walk that path alone. Working together gives us a better understanding of the vocal issues women might face and how to minimize them. So how exactly do menopause and the changing hormonal landscape that women experience impact the voice? Estrogen is a major player, vocally speaking." Nancy Bos is a vocologist and co-author of the book Singing Through Change: Women's Voices in Midlife, Menopause, and Beyond. She shares her story and discusses the KevinMD article, "Menopause changes women's singing voices." (https://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2021/07/menopause-changes-womens-singing-voices.html)

Nancy Bos has co-authored a new book Singing Through Change (with Joanne Bozeman and Cate Frazier-Neely) that tackles this subject with a focus on the female voice. Nancy and John discuss the aging voice and issues such as range, flexibility, and vibrato.

A Thriving Independent Business is a path for a creative entrepreneur to reach their goals toward realizing their passion. Creatives must focus on a priority, a passion that causes “angry compassion” to drive them toward living their fullest life. That can’t be done working for someone else. The key is an independent business. But don’t loose sight of the goal - it can be all to easy to get lost and lose motivation. This episode will shine a light on your journey. What is “Business”? “Business" is your entire service/education business Does Business also encompass your own singing/performing and other aspects of your entrepreneurial life? What is “Independent”? Your income is not dependent upon a long-term employer. Your income is free from outside control; not depending on another's authority. What is “Thriving”? To Flourish To Prosper To Succeed What Is Not “Thriving”? Fail Why do we need to thrive? Passion for our work (different from elation or ecstasy). We care so deeply about the outcome that we commit ourselves to the outcome, whatever comes. What fills you with compassionate anger? Ultimately you will change the world around you. Todd Henry from Die Empty and Accidental Creative Podcast “You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” Steve Jobs Goals and Behavior What we pay attention to is what we are capable of changing. Every time we act in alignment with who we want to become, it is incredibly empowering and affirming. Goals vs actions Habits Priority vs priorities From Brodie Welch on The Entrepreneurial Musician podcast Why Accept the Challenge? It is easier to not change, but you are not done - ever. You will never reach a point where you should just maintain. Growth (of some sort) is always necessary to avoid lots of bad stuff. Business Evolution The last time you set your business goals you might have been a different person. Reassess yourself, reassess your business identity. How does your business (and you) embody self respect? Be the change you want to see in the world. How can you model self respect for your students. Is exhaustion a badge of honor? Growing vs Maintaining vs Pruning Are you adding without subtracting? Not everything should grow always and for all time - choose what to maintain and what to grow. Diversify your income sources. Diversify your working style. Take Steps On the Path of Your Passion
What does it mean to be a creative? Are you a problem solving creative or a detail-focused artist? How does your preference effect your life, love, and career? In Every Sing I talk to people who devote their lives to singers and singing, from the performers themselves to anyone who works behind the scenes in singing related fields. In Every Sing, we explore a wide variety of career options and passions. If you are looking for a way to make a career around singing, or to find inspiration for your own journey, you will find it here. If you are new to this podcast, check out the back episodes. You’ll find interviews with famous singers, giants in the field of voice science and voice pedagogy, a peak performance coach, audio engineer, event producer and more. And today’s episode is a lot different than others. Today I am going solo talking about lessons learned from the amazing people I’ve gotten to talk with in the first 30 episodes of Every Sing, combined with my own perspective on careers around singing. First I want to give a shout out to my listeners around the world! You probably guessed I’m in the US - or maybe I’ve made it obvious that I’m in Seattle. There are hundreds of listeners in the Us and there are dozens of listeners in Canada. But I want to give shout out to the listeners in the places I didn’t expect; Chile, Peru, Ghana, South Africa, Ireland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Austria, the UAE, Iran!, China, Bangladesh, Cambodia, South Korea, Plus there’s more I’m not naming! and New Zeland. New Zeland! You have an especially strong presence! Thanks for finding me! If you have Facebook in your country, please connect with me there through Every Sing Podcast. If not, email me at nancy@studiobos.com Finally, before I get started on this episode, there is one listener I want to call out - who ever is listening in Hunedoara, Romania, I’m excited! I will be in Sibiu, Romania in September and I would LOVE to connect. If anyone else wants to connect - especially if you want me to travel to your place - I’m all ears! I love to travel, to share my passion for this field, and I’m a really human who loves to connect with other real humans! Alright, lets get started on this topic. I want to talk to you about singing, singing related careers, and a mindset for singers. Coming from a place of being a singer who’s personality type does not fit the goals and requirements of living the life of a performer Coming from a place of teaching hundreds of people who loved to sing and didn’t know where their place is in singing Coming from a place of watching a gen eration of my students go from hopeful, would-be professional singers as teen agers, to sometimes completely disparate careers, and sometimes professional careers. Coming from a place of a podcaster who is talking to other singers about their careers. About singing, the first question is, what’s the point - why do we sing and what do we expect will happen when we sing. About singing related careers - this is where my curiosity is leading me these days. For this section, I reference my book, The Teen Girl’s Singing Guide, available on Amazon. And finally, a mindset for singers I want to share so fun news - I was accepted as a member of the recording academy today. That’s the group that hosts the Grammy’s. But even more than that, they support education, especially careers for musicians. So you can imagine, I’m pretty excited about how I can contribute to the work they are doing. Thank you so much for joining me. I’m always available to talk about issues that come up in the podcast. You can find me on Linked In, Twitter, and reluctantly, on Instagram. We turn the tables on our host as Nancy Bos's son, Quincy Costlow, interviews Nancy for the podcast. Nancy suffered serious performance anxiety because the music she was trained to sing did not speak to her; classical music wasn’t her genre of choice. Once she committed to singing and teaching in other styles, her performance anxiety dissipated and confidence took its place. Nancy’s joy in teaching singing is that she can be a key part of someone’s journey and help them realize their dreams. Her passion for singing is to be an artist of the audiences emotions through song. She has been amazed to learn through this podcast that every guest has had a different reason for their passion. Hers is to change the dialog, the energy, of the audience. Nancy’s recommendation for singers is that they have a goal to work toward, and if they don’t have a goal set for them, then to set one themselves. Quincy Costlow, the guest host, is a 21 year old apprentice in the field of heating and air conditioning. He dreams of having a podcast of his own some day.
