The Imperialist by Sara Jeannette Duncan audiobook. “The Imperialist,” a novel by Sara Jeannette Duncan, published in 1904, is a portrait of life in small-town Ontario at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, English Canada was torn between affectionate loyalty for the “mother country” (Britain), and, on the other side, hard-headed respect for the demands of life in the shadow of the dynamic American economy. (In a by-election, one party pushes for establishing a preferred trading relationship between Canada and Britain: this is the “imperialist” position referred to by the book's title.) Main characters find themselves in problematic love stories that unfold against the backdrop of a society that is working out its national identity. These national issues would continue to vex Canada for decades to come. The author is ambivalent about the larger debates, but offers richly specific, subtle, and entertaining observations of manners and morals. In the decades since publication, “The Imperialist” has been increasingly appreciated as a landmark in Canadian fiction. Critic and scholar Peter Allen has written: “Duncan is an eloquent and important witness to the ambiguity of [Canada's] developing national identity in the years before World War I.” NOTE: In this novel, a brief depiction of Native Canadians uses what we today recognize as offensive stereotypes. However, we start the episode on a more scandalous note, talking about what everyone else has already heard and talked about: the LEWT cheating debacle. We do our best to talk about this and what we think about the situation given our limited knowledge of the walleye world. Eventually, we switch to a lighter topic (kind of), and talk about the Canadian Hunks Skunk. We discuss what happened, and how to bounce back from a heartbreak trip. Kellen gives us some good advice about keeping your mind in the game and staying positive when times get tough. Donnie and Kellen talk about their recent NY outing and Don Senior's 50 with Vance from Muddy Creek. Last week Pope Francis visited Canada to apologize and seek forgiveness for the crimes committed by the Catholic Church against the indigenous peoples of Canada. He called that practice of Christianity “evil.” On the first day of his visit Mike received an email from one of Canada's most well known and beloved Native Canadians, the folksinger Buffy Sainte Marie. In it she explains why an apology isn't enough. Mike then asks the Pope (whom he's met) to grant indigenous people everywhere a Papal Decree that's long overdue. *************** Read more about The Doctrine of Discovery: National Geographic article DoctrineOfDiscovery.org *************** Music from today's episode: “Aiya Surli Tikiatasanga (The Time I Arrive)” — Leo Osoak “The Mission (Gabriel's Oboe)” — Ennio Morricone “Universal Soldier” — Buffy Sainte Marie *************** Podcast Underwriters: 1) Anchor.fm can help you start your own podcast. Canadian Gun-Rights Lawyer Ian Runkle on AR-15 Confiscation Effort

One of the persistent debates in American gun politics is over AR-15s and other "assault weapons." Policy around ARs has stagnated since the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004. However, gun-control advocates have begun to expand proposals into outright confiscation, with Beto O'Rourke being among the most prominent. Now, our neighbors to the north are testing out these expanded proposals in practice. It isn't going well so far. Program costs have already run over budget for the buyback portion of the mandatory buyback and details for it haven't even been announced yet despite a looming April deadline to turn in the affected guns. As a result, very few Canadian gun owners have actually turned in their ARs a year and a half after the ban was announced. To get a better idea of what's at play with the confiscation effort and how it's likely to play out going forward, I had Ian Runkle on the podcast to give us his perspective as both somebody affected by the ban and an expert on Canadian gun law. Ian is a Candian gun-rights lawyer who has litigated many cases involving the country's complex gun laws. He also owns AR-15s. We talk at length about how the government has effectively incentivized people not to turn in their guns to this point and how he expects they may go about enforcing the confiscation order once it does go into effect. We also discuss the differences between gun culture in the United States and former commonwealth countries such as New Zealand and Australia. Ian weighs in on whether Canadians are more likely to resist the confiscation effort than their commonwealth cousins due to their proximity to their more rebellious American neighbors. Ian explains how the national registry of AR-15s and other targeted guns in Canada will make resistance difficult for many. But, he says he expects the guns on the ban list which aren't registered will see a far lower compliance rate. He said that's especially true for a number of guns that people may not even realize are banned under the order given its vague wording. We also discuss the impact the policy is likely to have on Native Canadians and how it mirrors the disparate impact of gun law enforcement in the United States. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman details how permitless carry just got a big boost in Georgia thanks to the impending gubernatorial election. And we look at how many millions of guns were sold in the United States during 2021. Special Guest: Ian Runkle.

Episode 4 is a deep dive into the indigenous world of blurry creatures. Our guest is Tom Sewid--an indigenous Native Canadian living on Vancouver Island and a Watchman for his tribe--the Kwakwaka'wakw people. Tom and his community have a unique relationship to the creature they call Dzoonakwa (Sasquatch) and he has a swath of knowledge to share with us "concrete" folks from the urban jungle. For 9 years, he lived off the grid in the Canadian wild where he had many intrepid encounters with Sasquatch. In addition to being a foremost tribal expert on the phenomenon of Dzoonakwa, Tom has also been a commercial fisherman for the last 40 years and in this episode, he shares exclusive accounts and stories he has NEVER SHARED on-air until now.  Thanks for listening.  Please give us a 5-star review! I sat down with my cousin Maria Rogers to discuss the on going racial tensions across the world today. Given the Covid19 Crises, it works out well that I live with someone who happens to be a person of color studying criminology, with a specific interest in racial tensions between the legal system and both black and Native Canadians. We had a good discussion about the current racial tensions, but focused on strategies to fix the problem within our own communities. These problems won't be solved with the two of us sitting here, so we intend to give ideas on what you can do with your own friends, families and children to decrease and defeat the plague of racism that has once again showed it's ugly face. FEATURED RECORDING ARTIST: ARTIST: Julian Taylor Band TRACK: Avalanche BIO: The voice drifting into the lobby from the soundcheck sounds so timeless it might be emerging from some ancient well of souls at the end of the world, but it’s also fresh and vulnerable. Other times, lost in the dreads, the voice comes up out of the shadow summoning ancestral tones of Maroon resistance or slipping into a high Mohawk register. So…not a monotone experience at all. And well beyond stereo. In fact not of any one genre. Not limited that way. There’s no dissonance. it’s a harmonic whole. Julian Taylor masterfully re-combines and updates the vintage sounds that inspired him, to create bold, innovative songs. Taylor, of both West Indian and Native Canadian decent, is a charismatic frontman, prolific songwriter, and endearing individual – the kind who immediately connects and makes you feel at ease. That character of warmth and generosity permeates everything Taylor does. Toronto poet Robert Priest describes him as “the kind of artist forever in the zone, the voice limitless, the songs full of feeling and memorable hooks.” In his His latest album, “Avalanche” the title track of the same name is inspired by death, remorse, redemption, and unconditional love. “Life is made of two things” Taylor says… “moments and the memories that they leave behind. This is the title track to the album because when I began working on this record my life was in turmoil. It felt similar to a time when I buried a lot of close friends. I was in this endless spiral of self-destruction and it seemed like I was at a funeral every other weekend. Julian Taylor Band Website Kutupitush! (Thank You!) for listening!

Q&A #131 - Apostle's Creed, Native Canadians, Discipleship, Psalms, Adam and Eve and Genesis1. Every once in a while I hear the pastors talk about the apostles creed. What is it?2. Native Americans make up about 4.1% of the population and account for 28% of the admissions to our prison system (statscan 2018). Since they are seriously over-represented in our justice system, they are among the poorest of the poor in Canada, and the majority of Canadians are frustrated with the native population as a whole ("look, another drunk native on the corner"), that population seems to fit with the poor/imprisoned/lepers that Jesus said we need to reach out and take care of. Any ideas on how we as a church can approach this issue given current cultural attitudes and events?3. Further to the discipleship discussion from last week, how do you initiate a discipleship relationship, both discipling others and being discipled? What does that look like in daily life? Society is so individualistic I'm having trouble imagining what this practically looks like.4. When I read the psalms, it seems much of it is more of a poetic, literary book than it is a theological, fact book. But then I read the new testament, and I see the Jews interpreted many of the "poetic" sayings as literal prophecy about the messiah. Then many Christians use it as literal ideas on how the universe and life works. How on earth do I read Psalms given this mish mash of perspectives on it?5. If we all came from Adam and Eve, how can I explain to a non-Christian why there are so many different languages and colors of people.6. Science has pretty clearly shown the Earth is millions of years old and there were multiple extinction events before humans came on the scene. Does that mean God made death and suffering before the fall or man? If so, how do we handle the fact that God created this and said it was good?

Eli Rubenstein and I have been friends for forty years. Close friends. It is therefore from the vantage point of familiarity I was compelled to do this interview with him. I know his stories and I know how riveting and from his heart they are. I knew Eli would be open to challenging questions.  So the fifth episode of HAT RADIO! is a recorded schmooze between Eli and I in his living room, for a couple of hours. What i was intent upon finding out was: how the transition was from being a right-wing Orthodox Jew to a humanistic Jew. He told me. He said it was freeing. He lamented, it was difficult because in many ways he has left the community he knew as a boy. But he was not afraid to show his secret side. His words were intimate. I wanted to know from Eli what drew him to Holocaust Survivors so much so he became the spiritual leader at Congregation Habonim, a synagogue started by Survivors. His response was they were courage; they are brave; they are Jews who danced at the bar mitzvah of their grandchildren after going through the hell we call Auschwitz.  And I asked my friend Eli about his close relationship with Native Canadians and his leadership within Israel's seeing-eye dog community and his passion for music and love of all peoples. And he answered mostly in stories, because Eli Rubenstein is a prolific storyteller. Listen to episode 5. Then listen again, and perhaps another time. It is the type of interview  you will learn from, more and more as you go...about life, humility, love and a powerful drive of one person to bring joy and comfort to all people. And that is Eli. We are dear friends. HAT RADIO!   A show that schmoozes.
