It's easy to get swept away with the mundane of existing. You get up, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, go to work, eat lunch, come home, brush your teeth, go to sleep... Sound familiar? How can any of it mean anything? There is nothing special about this. After all, this is what it means to be an adult, right? Rabbi Alex Kress works day in and day out to operate differently than the notion above. The idea that life is grey is an unrelatable idea as Rabbi Kress takes the principals of radical amazement by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and applies to literally EVERY moment of his life. Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, learns from Rabbi Kress how to make every second radically amazing! 00:00 Introduction 04:53 Fostering gratitude and radical amazement 08:31 Having a structured life can be detrimental 10:57 Preconceived knowledge 15:38 Be grateful for what you have 16:28 God-centered transformation 19:37 Don't take things for granted 24:21 Seeking God 26:42 Transforming chores 31:19 Reflection, contemplation, and ethical change 32:47 Practical advice About Rabbi Alex Kress: Rabbi Alex is a born and raised Philadelphian. In 2012, he graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Arts in Jewish Studies and immediately flew to Israel to begin his studies at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Rabbi Alex loves good coffee, shabbos ball, and reading an actual, physical newspaper. Rabbi Alex's life was changed when his parents sent him to Camp Harlam in 2002. It was the first domino in a series that led him to the rabbinate. He became involved in NFTY PAR, traveled with NFTY in Israel and NFTY EIE, and then studied abroad at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. That semester in the spring of 2010 definitively set Rabbi Alex's course for the rabbinate. In the latest edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts Matan Koch, the Senior Vice president for Strategic Change at RespectAbility, a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities so people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of community. Born 11 weeks premature with cerebral palsy and confined to a wheelchair for his entire life, Koch graduated from Yale and took his law degree from Harvard Law School, and has been a lifelong advocate for those with disabilities. He joins Rabbi Yoshi as we celebrate Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month (JDAIM).Observed each February, JDAIM is a unified effort among Jewish organizations worldwide to raise awareness and foster inclusion of people with disabilities and those who love them. JDAIM was founded in 2009 by the Jewish Special Education International Consortium to raise awareness and encourage inclusion for people with disabilities and special needs. Appointed by President Obama to the National Council on Disability (where he served from 2011 to 2014), Koch is a longtime national leader in disability advocacy."As the child of a congregational rabbi, who was also a URJ camp faculty member, and himself a former NFTY national officer, I was born into sort of the entire apparatus of the Reform movement at a time when people like me were not a part of that apparatus," Koch says. "In many ways, I benefitted from that. While institutional Judaism wouldn't think about practical strategies for people like me until the turn of this century, it meant that the approach was much more, 'How are we going to include Matan?' and much less, 'What's our strategy for the inclusion of Jews with disabilities?'"From his childhood summers spent at URJ camps Eisner and Kutz, he saw demonstrations of demonstrated a type of inclusion that would plant the seeds for his future advocacy, and fell in love with song leading. He began his disability policy career lobbying for a major disability organization in Washington while an undergraduate at Yale (where he was the president of the university's student disabilities community) and was appointed to the city of New Haven disability commission at the age of 18 while a college junior. After graduating from Harvard Law, he served as counsel for Proctor & Gamble. Working with both the product marketing teams at P&G and its disabilities inclusion network, he developed the perspectives on consumer power and talent maximizing jobs for people with disabilities at the heart of the business case for universal inclusion that he teaches today.Considered one of the nation's leading Jewish inclusion experts, he has developed training and materials for many Jewish organizations, including Hillel International, the Union for Reform Judaism, and Combined Jewish Philanthropies. The son of a rabbi and a Jewish educator, he has been speaking on Jewish inclusion since early childhood and has been formally and informally retained by Jewish organizations for the last 20 years."This to me is the zinger: So what is the traditional instruction that, you know, resulted in the building of the Mishkan and the building also, later, of the Temple? It is, 'Build Me a space that I may dwell among you,' right? That, that we're building a space for God," says Matan. "And yet, if each of us, with our varying levels of ability, is a reflection of God, then God reflects the totality of all of that, which means that to build a space—to truly build a space for God to dwell among us—it has to be a fully inclusive space, because any person, any attribute, any type, that is excluded from the space that we build, is a facet of God that we are excluding from that."

Built by Gamers, an American esports organization, wants to get ahead of the game by integrating with Bitcoin SV. “It's a sneaky industry and we want to get out in front,” says Taylor Searle, the company's strategic advisor. He believes gaming is an overlooked sector when you consider the huge numbers of people and money that are now involved. Based in Arizona with operations worldwide, Built by Gamers onboards professional players and content creators and distributes their work to various platforms while managing brand integrations and sponsorships. The organization acts as an intermediary between sponsors and players, allowing the latter to focus on their gameplay. It also provides its teams with housing, food stipends and a coaching staff, much like a traditional sports team would have access to. As Taylor explains, “these kids are the most elite, I call them athletes in the space.”The organization is always recruiting new members and plans to partner with schools and universities to discover new talent. Ideally, they'd like to sign up people who are both great players and effective influencers. But for Taylor, the secret sauce is “recruiting people based on how well they drive with our culture”. Establishing themselves as the most professional and most gamer-oriented organization in the esports community is a priority. For Taylor, representing the ‘gamer ethos' of constant improvement is the way to go. On this episode of CoinGeek Conversations, Taylor explains how they will push gaming to the next level with the help of the Bitcoin SV blockchain. “Our goal is to create gamification of the fan experience. That's only possible on Bitcoin SV, there really isn't competition in terms of how it excels and how it's going to help us unlock the future.”Taylor mentions that other blockchains have approached them in the past but he says only the Bitcoin SV blockchain can harness the power of gamification. “Every other project out there is about getting scarce collectables, and that's cool, but there's so much more to offer with this technology than creating rare things.”Built by Gamers plans to onboard people to Handcash and incorporate BSV blockchain backed apps into their website. “Someone will come to our website through this adoption funnel and they'll sign up for Handcash, NFTY jigs, Haste arcade all at once,” he explains. “We will use this technology to pretty much become a middleman to almost every fan interaction.”

A recent investigation into toxic hook-up culture among American Jewish teens, published in the digital magazine New Voices, shone a light on pervasive sexual harrassment within certain groups of Jewish organizations, such as BBYO, United Synagogue Youth and NFTY. To many people who have attended Jewish youth groups, this may sound like nothing new—but it does feel like a tipping point, as society at large grapples with systemic sexual harrassment in various industries and cultures. What are the solutions? How can organizations and community members change change things? And why can this trend not simply be brushed aside as "teens having sex"? To help answer these questions, we're joined by Rahel Bayar, a former sex-crimes and child-abuse prosecutor and the founder of the Bayar Group, a consultancy that works with camps, schools, corporations and faith-based organizations to help them identify and root out sexual misconduct, harassment and abuse. Plus: the hosts debate the controversy surrounding the new Netflix reality show, My Unorthodox Life. Is it worth all the hubbub it's caused in Orthodox circles? In the first Proles of the Minyan interview episode, Shelby Shoup joins the Minyan to discuss Zionist cultural replication and the potential for leftist organizing among Reform Jewish youth. Shelby is the former Social Action Vice President (SAVP) of the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), the youth organization within the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), and she is the current president of the Florida State University (FSU) chapter of Students for Justice with Palestine (SJP). There are a lot of acronyms in this one. She gives us the inside scoop on throwing diary products at reactionaries, the "progressive except for Palestine" hypocrisy within the URJ, and the mechanisms by which NFTY, and their summer camp system in particular, serves to prop up Zionist hegemony over Jewish youth in the United States and Canada. She also shares her journey out from under that hegemony and towards anti-Zionism, anti-racism, and anti-imperialism organizing with SJP and Tallahassee Dream Defenders. The Minyan also debuts two new segments, shouts out Eli Valley and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP, as if there weren't enough acronyms), and declares undying love and support for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP... last one, promise). This podcast is Temple Emanuel Podcast #5, an interview with Associate Rabbi Geri Newburge about the Temple Emanuel Youth Alternative Weekend program, which took place last November. Last November, Temple Emanuel young people spend the weekend of the annual teacher's convention on an alternative retreat in Baltimore that combined social, spiritual, and community action activities. In April, the program won the Irving J. Fain Award from the Religious Action Center of the Union for Reform Judaism. Rabbi Geri Newburge, our associate rabbi, accepted the Award RAC's Consultation on Conscience program in Washington. The award is named in honor of the late Irving J. Fain, who was Chair of the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism for more than a decade. In its citation, the Reform Action Center said "Temple Emanuel's youth program is modeled after the college Alternative Spring Break. Held in November when schools were closed for an annual teachers' convention, Temple Emanuel exposed students to the effects of poverty through a volunteer program in Baltimore, MD. Participants volunteered in three agencies including a soup kitchen, a food bank and a transitional homeless shelter. After returning, they dedicated themselves to educating others in the congregation about the shared responsibility to work for social and economic justice." In this podcast, Rabbi Newburge discusses the program and the award, and the challenges of developing compelling program for Jewish young people.
