Free Thinking Through the Fourth Turning with Sasha Stone

After my story Who Killed the Oscars was published in Tablet, I received this letter:Indeed, I didn't explain why I voted for Trump in the Tablet piece. It was already too long. No doubt many reading it thought, who cares what she thinks? She voted for Trump. I'm sure there was a time when I would have thought the same thing. I used to be a faithful, loyal Democrat. I used to be a cheerleader for Hollywood. I thought I would do anything for love. But I found out that there was one thing I couldn't do.But know this: it's never been a story about what happened to me. It's always been a story about what happened to the Left.So let's do a Part Two of the Tablet Piece and call it:Who Killed the Democratic Party? The first time I remember voting for the Democrats was back in the 1980s. I wore a Dukakis button as a Women's Only Health Spa receptionist. A customer saw my pin and said, “Why are you voting for Du-Tax-us?” I looked at her, confused. I didn't know why I was voting for him. “Never mind,” she said to me. “You probably never even went to college.”I knew enough back then that we were different from the Republicans. That political divide had lasted since Nixon's days. They were uncool and had all of the power. We were cool but had no power. We were the subversive side, the Blue Velvet to their Top Gun.That customer's words tumbled around in my head long enough to motivate me to go to college and finally graduate from UCLA at 29, the first person in my family to do so. While a student there, I saw Bill Clinton speak. All of that charisma suckered me in, and now I knew why I was a Democrat. It wasn't complicated. I'll have what he's having. After I dropped out of graduate film school to chase some loser dude back to Los Angeles, my life came apart so spectacularly that I escaped to migrate online, where I would work and live for the next 30 years. The internet changed everything. It gave so many of us a voice and a platform. Anyone could have a website online. Anyone could generate news. The question of who would control it was never asked because it was obvious. The Democrats did. We colonized it—the New Frontier in Cyberspace.Obama was as wedded to Silicon Valley as he was to Hollywood. I was in the right place at the right time, a Good Soldier for the Left as a member of a newly mobilized army on Twitter, rallying behind our leader, the nation's first Black president. We were more connected than ever before at a time when more people were alive than ever before. On the “inside,” things always felt so big, so monumental. On the “outside,” life went on as normal among “The Proles.” We were in the early stages of 1984 if Whole Foods catered it.It was an alignment of power not seen since the utopian days of post-war 1950s America when government and culture aligned to snuff out the Communist threat. With an iPhone in my pocket and high-speed internet, I did my duty every day as a Good Liberal fighting the good fight. It wasn't until Obama's re-election bid in 2012 that I understood I was part of a hive mind that could manipulate the media narrative and thus create the reality we wanted. We could stretch the truth—or lie—about, say, Mitt Romney and the “Binders of women,” and it worked. The legacy press would print our headlines. Clickbait would do the rest. Eventually, it trickled down into the homes of ordinary Americans. It wasn't just politics. It went much deeper than that. We were different people now, better people, good people doing things, something the Left never was throughout my entire life as a child of the counterculture 60s and 70s. But to be that good, we need to target people who were that bad. We needed a receptacle for our collective sins. This is a public episode. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.richardhanania.comRob joins me to talk about our experiences growing up poor, or poorish, with a focus on what race relations were like. For some context, I'm 38 and spent my childhood in one of the less nice suburbs of Chicago, while he's 34 and was raised in rural California. Both of us mostly hung out around people who didn't end up going to college and had prole habits, ideas, and interests. My family had some money but like many immigrants they didn't spend it on moving to a nice school district, so I grew up with the lower-class American experience. We discuss racial tensions in our schools, whether kids we grew up with were just uncomfortable with gay people or actively hated them, dating across color lines, and much more.Over the years I've come to realize that everybody is in something of a bubble. When I was growing up among the proles, I had a lot of misconceptions about what those at different socioeconomic levels were like, and more educated Americans are just as clueless about those at the middle or bottom. Rob and I came of age at about the same time, in communities that were majority white and non-college educated. Nonetheless, there was a lot more anti-blackness and anti-gayness where I lived, while these attitudes appear to have been less prevalent in Red Bluff. Maybe this is a California thing, as regional differences seem to matter a lot. Our divergent experiences reflect only a slight portion of the variation that exists across the United States, as neither of us has spent time in say Appalachia or the Deep South. We tell stories about the gay kid that Rob knew who was once the only one with the courage to say the “n word,” the Muslim girl at my school who one day took off her hijab and caused the boys to lose their minds, the Christian Arab girl whose family swore to kill her if she ever slept with a boy, and Rob's only experience with the trans movement. The first of these causes us to reflect on the 1990s and 2000s as the era of a more masculine liberalism, which joyously mocked those who felt harmed by words, whether incantations to Satan or racial slurs. Near the end, we get to wiggers versus cowboys, and how Trump has shifted the ways in which the people we grew up with see the political world. This conversation motivated me to look into what happened to the town I grew up in. It went from 1% black and 5% Hispanic in 2000, to now about 7% black and 22% Hispanic. Over 5% of households speak Arabic at home, and another 15% Spanish. I was recently back and saw signs and billboards in Arabic for the first time, and a sushi restaurant, which would've been a very strange sight when I was a kid. There's something truly beautiful about demographic transitions, where those willing to reproduce and take the necessary steps to better their lives by crossing a border inherit the earth. Life is about movement. Whenever you find yourself on the opposite side of the youth, you must reconsider. Those who mourn certain aspects of the past can't push a rewind button, but must use contemporary ideas, technologies, and institutions to try and build something new. To make sense of public schools and their staggering influence within the UK government and beyond, Andrew Harrison talks to Robert Verkaik, author of Posh Boys: How English Public Schools Ruin Britain, in The Bunker.  • “It's bizarre when you think that one school can be as influential in the running of the government as Eton has.” – Robert Verkaik  • “These schools' sole purpose is to advance the life chances of children who are already incredibly privileged… which ultimately undermines our democracy.” – Robert Verkaik  Buy Posh Boys: How English Public Schools Ruin Britain through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund The Bunker by earning us a small commission for every sale. A Word from Our Outpost: Faithful Formation for Catholic Missionary Disciples on Prayer, Evangelization, Scripture, and Disci

Holy matrimony is a pretty great thing. We think so, and it seems like God does too, what with blessing it with a three-fold blessing and all. In this episode, we talk about how there's an evangelical dimension of each of the blessings of marriage-- procreation/education of children, fidelity, and the sacrament itself, or as St. Augustine put it, proles, fides, et sacramentum. We reference Humanae Vitae by Pope Paul VI, which is well worth a read, and pretty short. https://www.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae.htmlAnd we reference Casti Connubii by Pope Pius XI, which is also well worth a read, but a bit longer. He really does a deep dive into those three goods of marriage, though. https://www.vatican.va/content/pius-xi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xi_enc_19301231_casti-connubii.html  (Joseph was off by one day in the episode-- Pope Pius XI promulgated the letter on December 31st, 1930. But it was probably 1931 over by the international date line by the time it went to print...)Feel free to drop us a line at hello@ouroutpost.org!And our website is www.ouroutpost.org

Welcome to our second holiday special! We give you first a touching family Christmas story, "Christmas at Red Butte," by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables. Next, a Christmas meditation by Charles Dickens, entitled "A Christmas Tree." In this piece, the author of "A Christmas Carol" offers, instead of a story, a set of reminiscences about the meaning of Christmas past as he contemplates life-long celebrations of presents and toys, books, and stories both silly and serious — including a long section on ghost stories — and of course, as "A Christmas Carol" itself reminds us, telling ghost stories was a major Christmas tradition in Victorian England, adding supernatural chills to the chills caused by the weather. CREDITS Montgomery, "Christmas at Red Butte": read by Dee Canfield * Axletree, "Clothe the Fields with Plenty"; "Drops of Melting Snow"; "The Silent Grove" [https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Axletree/music-from-a-hampshire-farm] Dickens, "A Christmas Tree": read by Mischa Hooker * Borrtex, "Buying Presents"; "Happy Holidays"; "Christmas Eve"; "Love & Generosity" [https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Borrtex/Christmas_Time] * Jon Sayles [http://www.jsayles.com/familypages/EarlyMusic.htm; http://www.jsayles.com/familypages/holidaymusic.htm]: Couperin, "Les barricades mistérieuses"; Ravel, Piano Concerto in G, Adagio (2nd movement); Fauré, Requiem: "Kyrie," "Libera me," "Pie Jesu"; Obrecht, "Pace Domine"; Dufay, "Proles de caelo," "Ce mois de May"; Senfl, "Gottes Gewalt Kraft"; Pevernage, "Secoure moy, madame"; Carols: "Deck the Halls," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" Theme music for program: * Chopin, Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 69, no. 1 and Waltz in B minor, Op. 69, no. 2 (performed by Olga Gurevich) Director / Organizer / Sound Editor: Mischa Hooker INFORMATION ON STORIES AND PLAYS REFERENCED BY DICKENS Dickens refers to many children's stories and plays in the course of his meditation, some still very familiar to young readers, others less familiar. Alphabet rhymes ("A Was an Archer") are still popular in easy readers; "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "Little Red Riding-Hood" are also very commonly read. Far less well known today are some of the plays Dickens mentions, such as "The Forest of Bondy, or Dog of Montargis"; or "The Tragedy of Jane Shore"; or "The History of George Barnwell." The internet provides immediate access to many of these historic works of children's literature, and it can especially be quite fun to see the old illustrations in the earlier editions even of familiar works. Apart from massive collections of scanned facsimiles offered by Google Books or the Internet Archive, one initiative to digitize and make available scans of numerous 18th- and 19th-century chapbooks is also worth pointing out: https://digital.library.mcgill.ca/chapbooks/index.php. We have gathered together a goodly collection of these old books mentioned by Dickens from these sources, in order to offer them for your interest in one spot. Warning! Looking into what another century considered good or appropriate is sometimes surprising or shocking — especially, adults should look over any such material before handing it over to children to read! B5 S1 E4 Infection (18 Feb 94) v DS9 S1E11 Nagus (21 Mar 93)-Ikarrian infections recalls in various ways the Star Trek: Next Generation antagonists the Borg, the role of evil AI in the original Trek (“Return of the Archons” [1967] & “Ultimate Computer” [1968] are 2 of the most prominent), the Phalanx in X-Men comics (they're first big story Phalanx Covenant came out a few months after this episode, the Black Panther antagonist Klaw (debuted 1966), & the Terminator (1st 2 films came out in 1984 & 1991)-DC Comics published an 11-issue B5 comic series (1994-95). The first arc, Price of Peace, was published in a trade paperback, & we will probably cover it on the show between S1 & 2 of B5. The second arc, Shadows Past & Present, explores the backstory of how Garibaldi & Sinclair meet. It isn't good, folks. In 1998 DC republished a 3-issue B5 mini called In Valen's Name, which takes place in B5 S4, we might cover that. DC's interest in B5 comics may have stemmed from its long swath of publishing Trek comics (1984-96)-David McCallum was one of the leads of the excellent English series Sapphire & Steel (1979-82). The other 2 charismatic characters from Sapphire & Steel, beside the leads, were Lead & Silver. The finale of Sapphire & Steel influenced Twin Peaks Season 3: The Return (2017)-Mark Fisher, one of our great theorists & horror media critics, writes about Sapphire & Steel in his Ghosts of My Life: Writings on Depression, Hauntology and Lost Futures (2014), although his posthumous The Weird & the Eerie (2017) is also relevant.-The leather aesthetic was big in the first X-Men film trilogy (2000-6) & Grant Morrison's New X-Men run (2001-4)-Quark's reception of a petitioner is an homage to the opening scene of The Godfather (1972)-Ironic given his portrayal of a capitalist patriarch, Wallace Shawn is also a socialist playwright & his monologue play The Fever (1990) is a particularly harsh presentation. The podcast Proles of the Round Table has an excellent version of the play.-Scenes of learning to read in primary or secondary languages or awakening to the power of the written word are an important trope of Afro-American literature, for example in Frederick Douglass & Richard Wright autobiographies Octavia Butler Dawn (1987) sf novel

What’s up Fellow Workers! Your favs from the West Virginia IWW sit down for a really interesting conversation with Ethan (@Utopologist) from the Marxist-Leninist history podcast Invent the Future (@ProletarianInfo) and a cool horror podcast called The Uncanny. This is a super off-the-wall show many of you may not expect. We start with a real quick history of theater in America, and much to everyone’s surprise, Wall Street gets involved. Antonio Gramsci makes some guest appearances and we talk about Marxist playwright Bertolt Brecht and the form of “Epic Theater”. It’s all kinda Socialist WWE for the People. Lastly, we discuss “Theater of the Oppressed”, which actually has a lot in common with many organizer trainings. Oh yeah… Broke: Smuggling Cuban cigars. Woke: Smuggling Cuban COVID vaccines. Thanks so much, Ethan. This show was absolutely incredible and super informative. Whether you spell it Ḥanukkah, Hanukkah, Chanukah, Khanike, or any other way, it’s that time of year for the Festival of Lights! Light your menorah & spin your dreidel while Talia & Yaakov reveal just how distant the modern holiday is from both earlier celebrations, when Judith was given pride of place alongside Judah Maccabee, and from the historical events surrounding the Hasmonean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire, which was a convoluted nightmare of shifting alliances with imperial backers, advances and retreats in guerrilla campaigns, and petty factional infighting. Spoiler alert: it’s neither the Zionist hasbara fantasy of Jews creating a nation for themselves nor the reductive “culture war” of Hellenism vs Judaism in which the Maccabees play the role reactionary religious extremists. It’s way way messier than that. Suggested reading: Cambridge History of Judaism Volume 2: The Hellenistic Age, The Book of Judith, The 1st & 2nd Books of the Maccabees, Josephus' "Antiquities of the Jews."
