Predictive Weed Control With Greg Stewart of Geco Strategic Weed Management

Future of Agriculture

Geco Strategic Weed Management: https://geco-ag.com/Today's episode features a new tool in the toolbox for farmers fighting weed pressure. As I've had conversations with farmers throughout the country, there is no doubt that the costs of weed control is a major pain point. This takes a lot of different forms, from the hand labor crews in California's vegetable crops, to herbicide-resistant kochia in the middle of US and Canada to just the sheer cost of chemistry that's impacting the bottom line of farmers everywhere, it's certainly an area ripe for solutions. For the past few years, Dr. Greg Stewart has been working on a very interesting solution to use data to predict weed pressure. This is interesting because it's addressing a major problem in weed control, but it's also interesting because it embodies what where we all hope this “ag data revolution” is going: towards predicting problems before we experience them. This opens the door up for more proactive weed management solutions, in some cases before the crop is even planted. Greg is a listener to the show and he's heard my requests over the years to not just feature founders of new technology, but also the farmers that are trying the solutions, so he offered to connect me to Rob Stone. Rob was nice enough to join me for a short interview while in the cab of a tractor, so you'll get his perspective as well. Rob is a customer of Geco and not compensated by them in any way. He was invited on to openly share his experiences. Let's dive into things here starting with an introduction to Greg. I'll introduce rob when we cut to him mid-episode. Dr. Greg Stewart is the founder and CEO of Geco Strategic Weed Management, who use AI and agronomic modeling for targeted and predictive control of weeds in farm fields. It requires no new equipment or new practices, and the turnaround time for a new farm can happen within a day. Geco is now serving over 60 farms across Western Canada.Greg's PhD is in the control of spatially distributed systems. He has worked with a range of industries. His data products reside on farm fields in Canada, US, and South America, in over 12 commercial greenhouses, 350 paper machines, 35,000 production diesel vehicles, and are creating more than $40M/year in value in manufacturing. He holds over 50 patents and 60 technical publications, and is a certified judge for competitive barbecue.

Jacques has a conversation with Tuffy Morwitzer, an activist from the Goongerah Environment Centre (GECO), about their reaction to the Andrews Government decision to stop logging old-growth forests by the end of the year - six years earlier than originally planned. Whilst that is a big relief for the 30 year old activist group - with whom Borderlands cooperated in the late 90s during the Goolongook tree-sits which lasted five years - GECO is very much watching the 'fine print' of the legislation for loopholes which are always sitting in such documents. The logging industry has a long and sorry story about finding - or even creating - loopholes.GECO is at present cooperating with First Nations elders to prepare for Aboriginal controlled regeneration, rehabilitating water ways, creating an economy of care, and creating a commons which may be offering healing for nature and wildlife - especially threatened species - for local humans and visiting humans alike.

These logging exemptions means that native forests will continue to be destroyed. We cross live to Isaac Carné who is currently occupying a tree in an area of the lands of the Gunaikurnai, Bidewell and Monero people, also known as East Gippsland, which is earmarked for logging by VicForrests despite government recommendations released in October last year. We are joined by Carly Findlay and C.B. She is the author of memoir 'Say Hello' and the editor of Growing Up Disabled in Australia C.B. SONIC ACTS FESTIVAL 2019 – HEREAFTER Didier Debaise – Out of Nature. How a Concept Became a Political Power? 22 February – De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, The Netherlands with an introduction by Rick Dolphijn. The moderns have invented ‘nature’ and have made it one of their most important political institutions. Didier Debaise will revisit this very singular adventure through which a number of local inventions, gestures, and operations, namely within experimental systems, have given birth to a new political force. Disconnecting this nature from the very conditions of its emergence and existence, the moderns have instantiated it as an essential actor within the processes of normalisation of practices and as a crucial instrument justifying the extension of their impact on all other territories. Today the question then has become the following: How to resist the hegemonic tendencies of this modern version of nature in order to reinstate space and restore legitimacy to other ways of inhabiting the Earth. Didier Debaise is a permanent researcher at the Fonds National de la Recherché Scientifique (FNRS) and the director of the Centre of Philosophy at Free University of Brussels (ULB) where he teaches contemporary philosophy. He is the co-founder, with I. Stengers, of the Groupe d’études constructivistes (Geco). His main areas of research are contemporary forms of speculative philosophy, theories of events, and links between American pragmatism and the French contemporary philosophy. He is director of a collection in Presses du réel, member of the editorial board of the journal Multitudes and Inflexions. He wrote three books on Whitehead’s philosophy, edited volumes on pragmatism, on the history of contemporary metaphysics, and he wrote numerous papers on Bergson, Tarde, Souriau, Simondon, and Deleuze. Two of his books are translated in English: Nature as Event and A Speculative Empiricism. He is working on a new book called Pragmatique de la terre.

In the early hours of January 25th, three citizen scientist surveyors from GECO, Goongerah Environment Centre Office, conducted a survey for Greater Gliders in old growth forest on the Errinundra Plateau. Logging machinery had just moved in and logging was about to commence. The survey was conducted to determine if the species was present in high enough densities to trigger legal protection. Fifteen Greater Gliders were found in about 800m. This is a huge population - legal protection and a 100 hectare protected area are the regulatory requirement be created. The survey was finished at 3am, the data compiled and a report written. Submission to the state government was made just before 9am.
