As a freelance writer, Nicole's articles have appeared widely in publications like The Sydney Morning Herald, ABC Online, The Sunday Telegraph and Elle Magazine Australia. 'The Last Station' is Nicole's new novel. Released by Penguin earlier this year, it's a sweeping saga depicting the harshness of life on the land in 19th century New South Wales. A story set in the dying days of the riverboat trade along the Darling River. Captivating, heartbreaking but not without humour, I was enthralled by this glimpse into a by-gone era. Nicole Alexander is an acclaimed voice in Australian rural fiction, with her new book Stone Country, her ninth historical novel, hitting the Top Ten best seller lists within days of release. Hi there I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today Nicole talks about giving up a career in fashion to become a fourth generation grazier, the vivid and visceral landscapes that give her work such a strong sense of place, and the passionate emotion that drives her characters. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: What it's like being a fourth generation grazierThe power of settingLearning to live well in a man's worldWhy city slickers love country storiesThe writers she admires mostWhat she'd do differently second time around Where to find Nicole Alexander: Website: https://www.nicolealexander.com.au/ Facebook: @AuthorNicoleAlexander Twitter: @authorNicole Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicole-alexander-45415524 What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: But now, here's Nicole. . Hello there Nicole and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Jenny: Beginning at the beginning – was there a “Once Upon a Time” moment when you decided you wanted to write fiction?? And if so what was the catalyst for it? Nicole Alexander: telling Australia's "Bush" stories Nicole: [00:00:28] There was a catalyst I guess. I grew up on a rural property surrounded with a lot of readers and storytellers. And my father used to sit around the dining room table with us and regale us with all these wonderful stories from the past. Tales that had come down through the generations. [00:00:49] And one of those stories was about the actual settlement of our property. My great grandfather selected our land in 1893 and he chose a site for the homestead near the banks of a creek in that area. [00:01:04] And in those early days he had some men with him. They spent their time cutting timber and building fences and shepherding the sheep which they'd over-landed from another property to the east. Now we're talking 1893 so as you can imagine the days and nights would have been equally long. And I always imagined that the monotony would have been quite extraordinary. That monotony was apparently only broken by the monthly arrival of the post. The magic of reading A supply rider would arrive on horseback delivering mail and other essential goods to those remoter settlers. And one thing that was delivered to my great grandfather in that first year of settlement was a book, a copy of Alexander Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo. [00:01:54] It arrived wrapped up in brown paper and twine inside a saddle bag on the back of the pack horse. And you know when I think about that year. 1893, and the arrival of that novel, I can just imagine his excitement. I see him radiant, by the light of a flickering candle. Or sitting beneath fat lazy moons and the Bush stretching out around him in this really engulfing silence. That was the story I heard at a very early age. [00:02:30] And that's one of the reasons why when I got a little bit older I started considering the possibility of eventually writing about our past or history. Jenny: It sparks the question in my mind. What made your great grandfather go there? What did he do before he decided to go way out there? Nicole: [00:02:53] Well. my father's side of the family came from Ireland, and they went across to New Zealand first. Jenny: [00:03:00] But they obviously didn't stay there. The Australian adventure begins Nicole: [00:03:04] Well, I'm not quite sure why, but they'd heard that there'd been problems with the Maori Wars and the unrest. And I think that there was a little bit of a concern there. A lot of Irish, obviously as you would know, came across to New Zealand.

Catherine is here today with Nicole Alexander. My family has been on the land in northern New South Wales, since 1893. Four generations have worked our properties and from an early age I grew up listening to the many stories passed down through the generations. My great-grandfather selected the original holding and is buried in the soil he loved. In 1893 he overlanded sheep from another Alexander property where he built a simple timber hut. The men spent their days cutting timber, erecting fences and shepherding sheep. I imagine the days and nights back then were equally long, the monotony only broken by the monthly arrival of the postal and supply rider who brought stores and mail to those remoter settlers. One of the items delivered to my great-grandfather in that first year was a copy of Alexander Duma's The Count of Monte Christo. The novel arrived in a saddle-bag on the back of a packhorse wrapped in brown paper and twine and I can only imagine my great-grandfather's excitement when he unwrapped the parcel. I heard these stories and many more as a child and from an early age I have loved Australian pastoral history. It is this love that led me to write novels that explore Australia's inland history. I am very conscious of my ancestors having walked the land before me and it was the need to return to my 'roots' that led to give up corporate life and return home. Initially I planned on having twelve months break in the country, but that was twenty-two years ago and I'm still involved in the family business. I've been writing for thirty years now, poetry, travel and newspaper articles to begin with, but it was only when I returned to the country that I began writing my first novel. It took me eight years to write 'The Bark Cutters'. I was working full time on the property, both in the office and outdoors (a steep learning curve in what was then a very male dominated agricultural industry), completed a Masters in literature & creative writing and released a volume of poetry. I wrote about the land and the emotional attachment that generational graziers have towards their properties and was fortunate that the work resonated with many people. The Bark Cutters was short-listed for an Australian Book Industry Award. Since then I've been on a book a year contract with Penguin Random House and An Uncommon Woman, out this July is my 8th novel. Nicole's works reflect a sense of continuity and an inherent love for the Australian landscape that is steeped in authenticity. She is the bestselling author of seven Australian Fiction novels; The Bark Cutters, A Changing Land, Absolution Creek, Sunset Ridge, The Great Plains, Wild Lands and River Run. The Bark Cutters remains the highest selling debut novel in the rural literature genre and was shortlisted for an Australian Book Industry Award in 2011. Absolution Creek and Sunset Ridge were both selected for the 50 Books You Can't Put Down Get Reading campaign. The Great Plains was nominated as a Top 100 Book by Better Reading in 2015 & 2016. Nicole's novels, poetry, travel, creative writing and genealogy articles have been published in Australia, America, Singapore, New Zealand, Germany & Canada. Non-fiction works include a poetry collection Divertissements: Love. War. Society (2008) and she was invited to be a contributor to the National Breastcancer Foundation anthology (2013) Dear Mum. An in-demand speaker, Nicole's past clients include; RaboBank, Landcare and The Community Mutual Group and she also conducts writing workshops. If you would like to discuss the possibility of engaging Nicole please send a query via the contact form on this website. Nicole Franklin is a guest speaker, and the panel discusses how Supremacy has linked slavery in the US to the ongoing police killings of unarmed people. Black people are regarded as “Cheap lives that don't matter.” It gives the law enforcement “Power over all forms of life.” (White Supremacy & Devaluation of African Heritage - Huffington Post 8/6/2015.) American “National Security” invests heavily in police operations, prisons, weaponry and surveillance systems to maintain an established order in Black/Brown neighborhoods and “lock em up!” US Prisons are the new plantations. Prisoners are paid 25-50 cents an hour depending on seniority to make subcontracted products. The inmates get money on account so they can buy toilet paper from the prison store. The Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation's largest owner of private prisons has had a 500% increase in revenue over 20 years. The California Prison System sub-contracts companies like Starbucks. Signature Packaging Solutions hires prisoners to package holiday coffees (as well as Nintendo Game Boys). Victoria's Secret and JC Penney hire inmates to sew lingerie. A California prison put two men in solitary for telling they were ordered to replace "Made in Honduras" labels with "Made in the USA." At California's prison dental laboratory, inmates produce custom dental trays, bite blocks, and dentures. The guns are turned inward. The US Security System is working toward a speedy Black massacre. Drive-bys, crack pipes and illiteracy fulfills the US continued holocaust measures. As the Black skin pigment disappears under the radiation of the cruel invisible hate-imp, it molds the Black Race into statues standing tall to model the “Old Guard”—Confederacy Flag fly on.” The flags have been lowered, but the mindset is embedded in the US populace.
