In this episode we are celebrating the career to date of Duncan Forrester.Duncan is a globally experienced Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and consultant who's worked with many of the automotive industry's most famous brands. He cut his teeth at BMW and Volvo in the UK, before being appointed as the global head of Product and Brand Communication for Volvo Cars in Sweden, soon after the Geely acquisition, and relaunching the Volvo brand with the then all-new XC90 and the other models that followed. He then spent a period of time running Corporate Communications for McLaren Automotive in Woking before the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a small team launching an entirely new and innovative car company – Polestar. With that unique experience, he started the first communication consultancy specifically supporting start-up and electric vehicle brands, initially creating the PR and Communications function for INEOS Automotive and their Grenadier, and then as Chief Communications Officer for Volta Trucks. And more recently in the same role for Automobili Pininfarina, with their all-electric Battista hypercar – one of the fastest and most powerful road cars ever built. And he's now working with the electrification of the vast Ultra Class mining haul trucks, so he really has worked on the decarbonisation of vehicles at every end of the automotive spectrum. In our conversation we talk about how he knew from an early age that he wanted to get into the automotive industry and he demonstrated great effort and persistence to make that happen. When opportunities arose, he had his own north star which helped him to decline some that weren't aligned. As a result he has amassed a significant amount of experience in the specialised field of launching startup EV brands.Paul Flitter and Paul Kirby had both mentioned Duncan in their recent episodes, highlighting what a supportive mentor he is. I was delighted to get the opportunity to get to know him myself through this conversation and to be able to share his story and experience with you.Connect with DuncanLinkedIn Profile WebsiteAbout AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! Like most of us he's had some good fortune but I found myself noticing that he has often taken decisive action to increase his chances of success.  His approach has seen him secure roles in Bahrain, Dubai and the Caribbean and he's traveled extensively as a consultant.  His international background proved to be more of a curse than a blessing when he was looking to return to the UK. He talks openly about those times, how they made him feel and the proactive steps he took to cope with what was going on and finally find a role.  I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated having this opportunity to talk with Mike. In listening to his stories there are lessons we can learn and examples of proactive behaviour that I find inspiring. There are clear reasons and demonstrable actions that reveal how he has been able to do what he's done. I first had the pleasure and good fortune to meet Mike in 2008. If you could design a drone specifically for public safety agencies, what would it look like? Blake Resnick is CEO and Founder of BRINC.  BRINC designs, manufactures and sells sUAS systems to public safety departments worldwide. The company's flagship product, the LEMUR, employs innovative solutions designed specifically for public safety and emergency situations.  Using lidar technology, the drone flies indoors with precision and unprecedented agility, and its two-way communication system allows first responders to hear and see through the drone. But this only scratches the surface of the drone's capabilities. Blake has the innate ability to define a problem, imagine a new approach and create a technology-based solution.   He started taking college courses at the age of 14, and then attended Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering. Before launching BRINC, Blake worked at McLaren Automotive, Tesla Motors, and DJI. He's a member of the Thiel Fellowship's class of 2020. Under Blake's leadership, in just 2 ½ years, BRINC has become a leader of public safety UAS solutions worldwide. He is currently working on an sUAS mesh system designed to respond to gunshot detections and 911 calls within seconds. When not enveloped in product development, he actively engages in recruiting, strategy development, internal communication, and fundraising.  In this episode of the Drone Radio Show, Blake talks about BRINC drones, in particular it's revolutionary LEMUR drone and he provides insights into how the company has become successful in supporting the mission of hundreds of public safety organizations around the world.

Ella Podmore is still young but has already crammed an awful lot of professional experience into her short career. In this podcast, we track her journey from school to her current role as Materials Engineer at McLaren Automotive, a position that she convinced McLaren, needed to be created. Ella is involved in all material investigations, from first drawings through to the final product, Ella has worked on the McLaren 765LT, the Elva roadster and the recently revealed McLaren Artura, the first series-production, high-performance hybrid from the luxury, high-performance supercar company.Ella joined McLaren Automotive as an intern engineer in 2016, having completed a degree in materials engineering at the University of Manchester before securing a full-time role two years later. Since then she has progressed rapidly, creating her department from the ground up and balancing her time between experiments and leading technical meetings. As one of more than 100 McLaren STEM ambassadors, Ella is passionate about encouraging more young people of all ages to take up science, technology and maths careers. On winning IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2021 she said  “I am absolutely honoured to have been chosen by the IET and the judges to be this year's winner,” says Ella. “Those who know and work with me recognise how passionate I am about my science and, being able to talk about that and the amazing supercars I get to work on at McLaren, I want to encourage the next generation of engineers and scientists to push the boundaries of what's possible.”As well as talking to young people around the world about her role, last year Ella was one of McLaren's expert judges on the BBC Blue Peter ‘Supercar of the Future' children's design competition. Since then, Ella has participated in the global reveal of the Artura and featured in a film to mark the launch of the LEGO Technic McLaren Senna GTR model, the real version of which she worked on.This was an amazing conversation with an engineer who clearly loves her job and is using her position recently gained with the IET to actively encourage the next generation of young women scientists, designers and engineers to pick up the mantle.  I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!

For this episode of the AVID Learning podcast Ryan Maughan talks to fellow North Easterner and electric vehicle innovator and trailblazer Doug MacAndrew about his vast experience in the Electric Vehicle market.Doug is a hugely experienced automotive engineer having come up through the ranks at Rover Group, JLR then to McLaren Automotive where he worked on the SLR super car program. After McLaren Doug moved back to the North East and joined a little known company called Smiths Electric Vehicles, Smiths were one of the oldest electric vehicle manufacturers in the world and they had an ambitious plan to launch a range of high performance electric commercial vehicles. Saying that today in 2020 this might not seem all that special with electric commercial manufacturer start-ups appearing all over the place, but way back in 2007 this was something really unusual and special. Smiths could trace its roots back to 1920 when it started as a manufacturer of electric delivery trucks for milk and tea. Its products had been quite low performance until that point focusing on low speed industrial electric vehicles they had a vision for transforming urban logistics with higher performance electric delivery trucks and vans. As an early mover in the electric commercial vehicle market unfortunately Smiths did not manage to break through with investment issues meaning they ran out of money before they managed to fully mature the product and gain scale in the market. After the Smiths adventure Doug then moved onto another massive challenge at electric personal aircraft company AeroMobil taking his experience of cutting-edge product development onto what could only be described as a unique challenge!Ryan and Doug discuss the electric vehicle market looking at what is happening in the market now, the challenges of vehicle development, achieving reliability and the vehicle powertrain engineering process. From electric delivery vehicles to flying autonomous cars including bringing together the skills of automotive and aerospace engineering! Including how electrification can significantly simplify and reduce the cost of small aircraft leading to huge opportunities and challenges for the established aircraft industry. After AeroMobil Doug has taken up a new challenge as Chief Operating Officer of battery manufacturing company InoBat, where Doug is leading the delivery of InoBat’s plan to develop and scale up battery technology in Europe. Ryan and Doug discuss the battery industry, cell technology cell form factors and packaging from solid state tech to the new form factors of cells coming to the market. Doug explains the plans at InoBat to scale their business as they bring new battery technology and manufacturing capacity to the market. Rather than just licensing in battery tech and building a manufacturing plant InoBat is aiming to take a leading position in global battery supply by developing their own battery chemistries and manufacturing technology for world class sustainable and ethical battery cell production in Europe. Doug’s passion for engineering and his vast knowledge of the electric vehicle market make for a fascinating discussion.Doug MacAndrew - https://www.linkedin.com/in/doug-macandrew-c-eng-fimeche-72847717/InoBat - https://inobatauto.eu/Gordon Murray - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Murray Frank Coppuck - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Coppuck Barry Lett - https://www.linkedin.com/in/barry-lett-361a13140/ Interview with Barry Lett about Mercedes SLR - https://jalopnik.com/the-mercedes-benz-slr-mclaren-is-and-is-not-a-supercar-1833557369 Aeromobil - https://www.aeromobil.com/Smith Electric Vehicles - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_Electric_VehiclesRyan Maughan LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-maughan-a2893610/AVID Technology website - https://avidtp.com/ Follow AVID on social media: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Avidtechnology1/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/2104817/Twitter - https://twitter.com/avidtechnology1

We present blogger and podcaster Kirk McElhearn, also known as Macworld's "iTunes Guy." He'll talk about his strange problems moving from the beta channel of iOS 10 to the release version, outline the interface changes that are meant to simplify Apple Music, and briefly comment about a decision by the U.S. Senate to spend a mere $19.5 million on plans for Mars exploration and a new spaceship design. The discussion moves to computer speakers, as Gene talks about his quest to find a system that won't blow the circuit breaker for his office when he's listening to music and also printing a document on his laser printer. You'll also hear from commentator Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor for The Mac Observer. He'll also talk about Gene's quest for new computer speakers, Apple's application to patent an exclusive design for a — paper bag, Apple's alleged attempt to discourage customers from buying music with Apple Music, new developments in AI technology at Apple, and the latest scuttlebutt about alleged plans for an Apple Car. Is Apple giving up on building a car and focusing on self-driving technology? What about those published reports that Apple is in talks to acquire a luxury sports car maker, McLaren Automotive, and whether such a move even makes sense.

Predictive Power Ensconced in the ivy-covered halls of universities around the world are men and women who spend their days looking for answers. Answers to questions that might not even exist called "Unknown Unknowns." Many recognize this function as engaging in scientific theory which, over the years, has led to accepted works like Einstein's "General Theory of Relativity." But before his or Newton's or even Darwin's research was accepted, their theories had to generate testable predictions otherwise known as Predictive Power. Predictive Power appears on Autoline Detroit but not in the guise of any ground-breaking theories. Here, as is the case with this week's show, we divide the phrase and spotlight one word at a time. For instance take "power." Who better to talk about it than an executive of McLaren Automotive, the British manufacturer of high performance vehicles? And what better vehicle to talk about than its first sports car developed for those who don't wear fire-retardant suits, the MP4-12C. McLaren's Tony Joseph not only talks to John McElroy about the company and its move into production cars for consumers but also takes him for a walkaround the car that you won't want to miss. Then as far as "predictive" or in this case "predictions" go, we turn to Jeremy Anwyl, the CEO of Edmunds.com. This 45-year-old firm along, with its sister sites, gather automotive information and distribute it to largely a consumer audience. Mr. Anwyl and his team keep their eyes glued to the OEMs do and analyze everything from production to sales to the executives who run the organizations. He stops by Autoline to give John a look at the automotive world from the Edmunds' perspective.
