An 'abomination' and a 'death trap': Papers denounce Israel's food aid system in Gaza

PRESS REVIEW – Wednesday, June 25: International papers criticise Israel's "genocidal" food distribution system in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Russia is planning to train Chinese troops, according to an exclusive report. Next, Bulgarian papers worry about a black leopard that's roaming free. Finally, inflatable crocodiles threaten the wedding of billionaire Jeff Bezos in Venice.  In Gaza, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army since the new food aid distribution system was set up. Many papers are denouncing the system. French Communist paper L'Humanité writes "Gaza, we are not forgetting you", over a photograph of a little girl standing in the rubble. The paper calls Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's policies "genocidal", saying that food distribution in the enclave is turning into a death trap. Italian communist newspaper Il Manifesto describes what's happening as "Hunger games". The paper denounces "the Israeli trap" against the starving Palestinians and what it calls the "murderous food distribution system" in the enclave – the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Spanish centre-left daily El Pais reports that the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has called the Gaza aid system an "abomination", citing UNRWA's head Philippe Lazzarini, who calls for a return to the previous practices of aid delivery. Finally, an illustration in the left-wing British daily The Guardian by Ben Jennings shows a single bag of food aid, surrounded by dozens of body bags.  We turn next to Russia and an exclusive article in The Kyiv Post. The Ukrainian paper reports that Russia is planning to train Chinese troops to counter NATO weapons, according to an unnamed Ukrainian intelligence source. The source shared that Moscow will host some 600 Chinese military personnel this year. Staying in Russia, President Vladimir Putin has signed a law on the creation of a national digital service, the financial daily Vedomosti reports. The service will combine the functions of a messaging app and a government service, where Russians will be able to prove their identity through digital ID, for instance. The article doesn't mention anything about privacy concerns or how the data would be stored.  In Bulgaria, local papers are worried about an animal on the loose. A town in eastern Bulgaria called Shumen is on its toes because of a wild animal – but not one that is usually seen in the Balkans. It's a black leopard and according to Bulgarian officials, it's been roaming free for more than two months now, as Bulgarian daily Off News reports. Police forces are still trying to catch the animal that they say didn't escape from a zoo, but is privately owned. Balkan Insight reports that the "fugitive black leopard is going viral" with numerous memes circulating online. An AI-generated meme relayed by Euronews portrays the leopard enjoying a traditional Bulgarian meal. Finally, we end with the inflatable crocodiles that are threatening the wedding of a well-known billionaire. Jeff Bezos's Venice wedding plans have had to be altered, the Guardian reports. The couple had to move their wedding venue after activists threatened to fill the Venice canals with inflatable crocodiles and block the guests from joining the festivities. The wedding has received huge backlash as activists warn that the event could turn the World Heritage Site into a "playground for the rich".  You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

Daily News Brief by TRT World

Türkiye celebrates Istanbul's conquest by launching gas platform "Türkiye sent off its first floating production unit Osman Gazi, towards the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan led the ceremonial send-off in Istanbul, accompanied by top officials and a traditional mehter band. Marking the 572nd anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul, the platform's journey through the strait began with presidential blessings and radio communications. Expected to double gas output, Osman Gazi is seen as Türkiye's bold stride towards energy independence." US flag returns to Syria after 12 years of frozen ties "In a landmark move, US envoy Thomas Barrack raised the American flag over the ambassador's residence in Damascus. It was its first appearance since 2012. Though embassy operations remain suspended, Barrack's visit signals renewed US-Syria engagement. Appointed on May 23, Barrack met with Syria's President Ahmed al Sharaa and reopened the residence with Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani. He reiterated US support for current leadership, hinted at peace talks with Israel and confirmed that sanctions had been lifted by President Trump, including Syria's removal from the ""terror sponsor"" list." Ukraine open to Istanbul talks but wants Russia's peace terms first "Jumping on to another volatile region, Ukraine has expressed its readiness to participate in peace talks planned to take place in Istanbul next week. However, Kiev insists that Russia must share its proposed peace terms in advance. Ukraine described Moscow's refusal to do so as “non-constructive,” warning that the meeting risks being ineffective without transparency. Meanwhile, the United Nations has reported a sharp increase in civilian casualties, with over 13,000 civilians killed since the conflict began. The United States has called on Russia to agree to a comprehensive ceasefire, emphasising that there is no military solution to the conflict. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also urged all parties to keep dialogue channels open despite stalled diplomatic efforts." South Koreans show record turnout as early voting continues "South Koreans turned out in record numbers on Friday for the second day of early voting, aiming to end months of political chaos sparked by ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol's controversial martial law declaration and impeachment. With the economy under strain and a revolving door of interim leaders, liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung leads the race, followed by conservative Kim Moon-soo. Already, a record 21 percent of 44.4 million registered voters have cast ballots, with overseas turnout hitting historic highs ahead of the June 3 election." "Hamas: Israeli ceasefire response fails to meet core demands "Palestinian resistance group Hamas says Israel's response to a US-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal falls short of its demands. The plan, put forward by US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff, remains under Hamas review. Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes bombed southern Lebanon, striking several towns days after a deadly attack breached the 2024 truce. Separately in Gaza, the head of the United Nations relief agency for Palestinian refugees Philippe Lazzarini, warned that Israel's war tactics, including starvation, threaten future generations in Gaza. He urged unhindered access to aid to avert a deepening humanitarian catastrophe."

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, was this week ordered to stop its operations in occupied East Jerusalem, three months after Israel's parliament voted to ban it. UNRWA is the main provider of humanitarian aid and other public services for Palestinians. In East Jerusalem, it runs 12 facilities that provide critical public services, including schools where more than 1,200 children are enrolled and free clinics that serve more than 70,000 people. But the impact of the ban would extend across the West Bank as well, where the organisation offers primary healthcare services and 47,000 children go to UNRWA schools. The move would also affect its work in Gaza. During Israel's war on the enclave, up to a million people at a time have sought refuge in UNRWA shelters. Pressure from the international community and pleas by UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini at the UN Security Council to stop the ban from being put into effect have failed so far. Israel insisted the ban would not be reversed and the US backed its “sovereign decision”, saying UNRWA is not the only provider of aid to Palestinians. Despite the legislation, UNRWA has stated it will continue to do its work for as long as it can, but fears are growing that the ban will have far-reaching consequences. In this episode of Beyond the Headlines, host Nada AlTaher speaks to Tamara Alrifai, UNRWA's director of external relations and communications, about the toll this could take on Palestinians in dire need of humanitarian assistance, and how the agency will be able to carry out its work going forward.

Shares in Taiwan closed lower Thursday as heavyweights across the board came under pressure to push down the broader market after a mixed performance of the U.S. markets overnight,. Market sentiment weakened amid growing fears that the U.S. Federal Reserve will slow down its pace in a rate-cut cycle following the return to the presidency of Donald Trump, who has threatened to raise tariffs when he takes office in January, which could boost inflation. NGO calls for universal affordable childcare, flexible parental leave The Childcare Policy Alliance is calling on the government to establish universal affordable childcare and more flexible parental leave systems… …to help boost Taiwan's low birth rates. The NGO argued that the existing childcare allowance is inadequate for long-term childcare expenses and often pressures women to leave the workforce, as it doesn't fully support the costs associated with (與 相關聯) quality childcare. It also emphasized that flexible leave policies encourage more men to participate in childcare, which could help counter traditional gender roles and promote a "dual income, dual childcare" model. The alliance critiqued the government' s current policies, including the rigid 30-day minimum parental leave block, which is too rigid for parents needing to take leave on an ad-hoc basis. It's the first known agreement by China with any one rival claimant country in a specific shoal in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety. The Philippines occupied the shoal by permanently beaching a navy ship in its shallows in 1999, prompting China, which also claims it, to surround the atoll with its coast guard and naval forces in what has been a continuing territorial standoff. Yo no me rendiré".

UNRWA is currently fighting a polio outbreak in Gaza, but a successful vaccination campaign there is nearly impossible given Israel's bombardment. “This is a communicable disease which doesn't know any border and could also spread in the entire region, including Israel,” Lazzarini tells Mehdi. In addition to disease, UNRWA faces repeated Israeli attempts at dismantling their entire organization. From accusations that staffers took part in the Oct. 7 attack, to allegations that Hamas builds tunnels under UNRWA schools.“I do not have the military expertise to look at what's underneath the entire Gaza Strip… All these allegations need to be investigated. First, we need to investigate the killing of the UN staff,” says Lazzarini. Watch the full conversation above to hear what the Commissioner-General also has to say about war crimes in Gaza. Also on the show: why can't U.S. news organizations get their coverage of Donald Trump right? The head of the agency Philippe Lazzarini said on X that “despite the tragedy unfolding under our watch, the Israeli Authorities informed the UN that they will no longer approve any UNRWA food convoys to the north.” He called the decision “outrageous,” saying the decision makes it intentional to obstruct lifesaving assistance during a “man-made famine.” *) Israeli war to only end with Jews settling in northern Gaza: Knesset member The head of the Knesset's National Security Committee Zvika Fogel has said “the Israeli war on Gaza will end with Jews settling in northern Gaza,” while speaking to Israeli public broadcaster KAN. He added that “Israel must end the war when Jews settle in the entire northern Gaza Strip.” Fogel called for encouraging the “voluntary migration” of Palestinians from Gaza saying, whoever wants to “voluntarily migrate” will receive a “grant” from him. *) Four suspects remanded in custody over Moscow concert attack Four men accused of involvement in the massacre at a Moscow concert hall that killed 137 people have been remanded in custody, as Russia observed a national day of mourning following the attack claimed by the Daesh terror group. President Vladimir Putin has vowed to punish those behind the “barbaric terrorist attack,” and said the four gunmen had been arrested while trying to flee to Ukraine. Kiev has strongly denied any connection to the attack. All four suspects have been charged with terrorism, according to Moscow's Basmanny district court, and face life imprisonment. *) Senegal anti-establishment candidate leads in presidential poll Senegal's anti-establishment candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye appeared to be closing in on a first-round victory in a presidential poll. Opposition figure Faye had promised voters “a profound change” and a presidential programme of left-wing pan-Africanism. Faye was well ahead of former ruling coalition Prime Minister Amadou Ba, according to preliminary results from individual polling stations published by local media and on social networks. *) Pro-Palestine protesters stage event at New York Metropolitan Art Museum Protesters covered the steps of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art with a large patchwork blanket displaying messages of solidarity with Palestine to draw attention to Israel's war on Gaza. Many demonstrators gathered on the steps of the museum, also known as The Met as they chanted slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “How many children did Israel kill today?” They also distributed brochures that highlighted the museum's silence over Israel's “genocide” of Palestinians and its support for its war in Gaza, advocating for a world where justice prevails.

Med zahtevami so v ospredju višje plače in načrt zaposlovanja. Če jim vlada ne bo prišla naproti, čez teden dni sledi nov stavkovni dan. - Podlaga za referendumsko odločanje o izgradnji drugega bloka krške nuklearke bo resolucija o dolgoročni miroljubni rabi jedrske energije. Dokument bi že morala obravnavati vlada, a usklajevanja še niso končana. Med pomisleki je tudi cena.

*) Israel killed 13,430 Palestinian children since October 7 — Gaza Israeli air strikes and ground invasion have killed 13,430 children since the start of Tel Aviv's carnage in the besieged Palestinian enclave, Gaza's Media Office said. It added that 8,900 women were killed over 150 days, and 7,000 people, 70 percent of whom are women and children, are still under the rubble or missing. The media office said that 364 health personnel and 132 journalists also were killed during the period. *) Dismantling UNRWA would sacrifice 'generation of children' The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, is calling out threats to shut down the organisation. Philippe Lazzarini said cutting UNRWA loose would leave a generation of Palestinian children in the lurch, breeding anger and violence. He told the UN General Assembly that stopping UNRWA's work is a bad idea because it would hurt millions who depend on their help, especially at a time when things are already tough. UNRWA is facing funding freezes and pressure from Israel to close up. *) Thousands flee as attack blamed on M23 rebels claims 15 lives in DRC's east The M23 militia fighters have launched sweeping attacks in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 15 people and leading thousands to flee, witnesses and government officials said. Testimony from locals, health workers and government officials on Monday pointed to attacks in the Rutshuru region of the eastern province of North Kivu. Access to the North Kivu capital Goma has been virtually severed. *) US top court reverses Colorado move to disqualify Trump from state ballot The US Supreme Court has handed Donald Trump a major victory as he campaigns to regain the presidency, barring states from disqualifying candidates for federal office under a constitutional provision involving insurrection and reversing a judicial decision that had excluded him from Colorado's ballot. The justices on Monday unanimously reversed a December 19 decision by Colorado's top court to kick Trump off the state's Republican primary ballot on Tuesday after finding that the US Constitution's 14th Amendment disqualified him from again holding public office. The Colorado court had found that Trump took part in an insurrection for inciting and supporting the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by his supporters. *) EU hits Apple with record $2B antitrust fine in Spotify case Brussels has fined Apple $2B for thwarting competition from music streaming rivals via restrictions on its App Store, the iPhone maker's first-ever penalty for breaching EU rules. A huge lump sum inflated a basic penalty of $43M included as a deterrent - a first for the European Union's antitrust authorities on Monday. The European Commission charged Apple last year with preventing Swedish streaming service Spotify and others from informing users of payment options outside its App Store, following a 2019 complaint by Spotify.

One of the key groups responsible for providing humanitarian assistance in Gaza is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), whose leader is sounding the alarm about what he calls a “man-made disaster.” But UNRWA itself has come under intense criticism recently, after the Israeli government alleged that 12 of its staff in Gaza were involved in the October 7th attacks on Israel.
