UNRWA chief says Israel has broken all rules of war in Gaza The UN's Philippe Lazzarini has condemned Israel's invasion of Gaza, stating that "all rules of war have been broken." The 14-month Israel's Gaza war sees escalating civilian casualties, with schools and hospitals targeted, he said. Urging a long-overdue ceasefire, Lazzarini calls for immediate action to safeguard civilians. He warned that the "world must not become numb." Israel targets homes in southern Lebanon, violating ceasefire In a sharp escalation, the Israeli military has demolished homes in southern Lebanon, defying the November 27 ceasefire. With 287 reported violations, the toll stands at 31 dead and 37 injured, official data shows. Strikes hit Kfarkela in Nabatieh and Hanin in Bint Jbeil, fueling regional tensions, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) has reported. Putin threatens 'destruction' on Ukraine after Kazan drone attack Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed "massive destruction" against Ukraine after a drone strike hit a high-rise in Kazan, over 1,000 kilometres from the frontier. The escalating aerial attacks deepen tensions in the nearly three-year conflict. While Ukraine remains silent on the attack, Putin warns retaliation will bring "regret" to those targeting Russia. Putin has previously threatened to target the centre of Kiev with a hypersonic ballistic missile in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. Myanmar conflict forces more Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh In the last two months, 60,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar's conflict-hit Rakhine state to Bangladesh, despite tightened border measures, according to an official. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini today (13 Nov) said the objective of the campaign to delegitimize the agency “is to strip the Palestinian from the refugee statue,” and “to undermine and to bury once for all the two-state solution.”Talking to journalists in New York after briefing the General Assembly's Fourth Committee, Lazzarini said, “we are experiencing the darkest moment for the agency in 75 years,” stressing that UNRWA staff, premises, and operation, have been under “attack.”He said, “in addition of that, there have been intense and aggressive campaign of disinformation reaching out of a donor capital to delegitimize the agency. And the latest development has been the adoption of the Knesset bill.”Lazzarini said, “UNRWA is a casualty of this war. Let's do no mistake. The intention to undermine the agency are politically motivated. They have nothing to do with breaches of neutrality.”He said, “if you get rid of an agency like ours, what will happen once we have a cease fire? What will bring back the hundreds of thousands of girls and boys currently living into rubble, into a learning environment? Only a functioning state can provide this education. I know that when it comes to primary health, the same questions are being asked.”The Commissioner-General vowed that UNRWA will continue operating “until the day we cannot operate anymore.”He said, “our determination is not to give in to our mandate to deliver services, and we will deliver such services until we are forced to stop these services. When will it be? I hope never. Now, what will happen after the 90 days, I do not have a straight answer. I think very few of us know. If we have a no contact policy in a place like Gaza, that means we will not be able to deconflict or coordinate any of our movement. So, it will make our operation extraordinarily challenging.”Asked about the right of return of Palestinian Refugees, Lazzarini said it is “a political right which needs to be addressed in a political solution. So UNRWA as an agency has absolutely nothing to do with this question.”On 28 October, Israel's parliament, the Knesset, voted in favour of legislation targeting UNRWA, which could effectively bring its operations in the occupied Palestinian territories to a halt.243 staff have been killed so far in Gaza since the beginning of the war. In an exclusive interview with ‘Mehdi Unfiltered,' the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, speaks to Mehdi on the threats that face both Palestinians in Gaza and his own organization. “I don't know how much worse it can become, I have to say, we are losing and we are lacking words to describe the situation,” says Lazzarini. UNRWA is currently fighting a polio outbreak in Gaza, but a successful vaccination campaign there is nearly impossible given Israel's bombardment. “This is a communicable disease which doesn't know any border and could also spread in the entire region, including Israel,” Lazzarini tells Mehdi. In addition to disease, UNRWA faces repeated Israeli attempts at dismantling their entire organization. From accusations that staffers took part in the Oct. 7 attack, to allegations that Hamas builds tunnels under UNRWA schools.“I do not have the military expertise to look at what's underneath the entire Gaza Strip… All these allegations need to be investigated. First, we need to investigate the killing of the UN staff,” says Lazzarini. Watch the full conversation above to hear what the Commissioner-General also has to say about war crimes in Gaza. Also on the show: why can't U.S. news organizations get their coverage of Donald Trump right? Mehdi is joined by journalist and author Wajahat Ali as well as former chief speechwriter to President Jimmy Carter, James Fallows, to talk about it. The conversation includes Ali calling for “fact checkers to retire for this election cycle,” Fallows on the “failure of imagination” among liberal white journalists, and a dark joke about detention camps from one of the two that we'll leave for them to tell. Then there is Afghanistan, where the situation for women and minorities gets worse by the day, under Taliban rule, but which is being ignored by much of our mainstream media.“What we see today in Afghanistan is gender apartheid. Women have been erased from public life. Their basic rights have been taken away from them,” Ali Maisam Nazary, Head of Foreign Relations for the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRF), tells Mehdi on this week's show.Watch the full interview to hear more on the status of women in Afghanistan. Israel has accused the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) of being involved in the October 7th attacks. “October 7th was a gamechanger. Because the involvement, direct involvement, of those 13 UNRWA employees in the October 7th attacks on Israel changed everything,” said Nina Ben-Ami, Head of Bureau, International Organizations and UN Division, Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Inside Geneva looks at what's at stake.  UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini says: “Today the needs are absolutely staggering in the Gaza Strip."UNRWA has fired the employees under suspicion, but its major donors have cut funding, even before the formal UN investigation into Israel's allegations is completed. UNRWA has 13,000 staff in Gaza, providing schools and clinics.  “Even if the allegations are true, that's no justification for cutting off funding for the most important aid and relief agency in the Gaza Strip,” says Louis Charbonneau, UN Director at Human Rights Watch. Can other aid agencies step up if UNRWA has to stop? Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council: “All of the non-governmental organisations, all of the Red Cross, Red Crescent organisations, all of the UN agencies combined, we're not even half of what UNRWA is for Gazan society.” Where does this leave the 1.5 million Gazans now crammed into Rafah? Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, explains that “Israel is thinking of going in with a bloody ground offensive. We would hold the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and all of these other countries providing the arms to this…we will hold them accountable for what is going to happen in Rafah.”“UNRWA remains the only lifeline in a region full of despair. A region which now deserves that we collectively look at promoting a proper genuine peaceful political solution,” concludes Lazzarini.  Join host Imogen Foulkes on our Inside Geneva podcast to learn more about the allegations and possible outcomes for UNRWA.   Get in touch! For 74 years, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA, has provided healthcare, education and social services to many.Yet, the war on Gaza has severely affected the UNRWA as Israeli air strikes have hit its facilities and killed at least 130 of its humanitarian workers. The UNRWA's work was recognised at the Doha Forum 2023, where we caught up with its commissioner general.Philippe Lazzarini talks to Al Jazeera.

Eva Nowotny in conversation with Philippe Lazzarini UNRWA – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees Eva Nowotny and Philippe Lazzarini talk about UNRWA, what makes it so special within the UN, why it is essential and what needs to be done to ensure a sustainable future of the organization and its work. Within the broader UN-family, UNRWA is quite a unique agency. It is the only organization in the UN family to provide direct public services like education, primary health care and a social safety net to Palestinian refugees in the region. It has a humanitarian mandate but its tasks are political in their impact in providing perspectives for Palestinian refugees. However, UNRWA finds itself in a crisis  due to the unreliability of its main donors. The agency needs a proper debate with the member states regarding common duties and commitment vis à vis Palestinian refugees in the future in order to find ways out of its precarity. Philippe Lazzarini is Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Prior to this position, he was Deputy Special Coordinator, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon in the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (2015-2020) and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia (2013-2015). Philippe Lazzarini joined the United Nations in 2003 and has served the Organization in various capacities, including as Deputy Director, Coordination and Response Division of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Head of the OCHA Office for the occupied Palestinian territory, Somalia and Angola and as Area Coordinator for the OCHA Office in Iraq. Before joining the United Nations, he served for ten years with the International Committee of the Red Cross as the Deputy Head of Communication, Head of the ICRC Delegation in Rwanda, Angola and Sarajevo and as an ICRC delegate in Southern Sudan, Jordan, Gaza and Beirut.

Pierpaolo Lazzarini wants to build an unidentified floating object. The U.F.O. 1.2 has been under development for about three years and now the Italian designer is finally ready to make his floating houseboat a reality.Spanning 12.5 meters in diameter, the U.F.O. has two living spaces: a main entrance and communal area above the water, and an underwater bathroom and bedroom. According to designboom, the plan is for the vessel to be self-sustainable. The main deck includes solar panels that charge batteries stored inside of the deck, and it can also be outfitted with an optional vegetable garden. Water tanks and weights are also stored in the deck, the weights make sure the bottom half (about 7.5 feet) of the U.F.O. stays submerged. The vessel includes a small electric motor that can move the houseboat up to 3.5 knots.Right now, Lazzarini is crowdfunding the houseboat, working the business model similar to a timeshare except with a place that you actually want to go. He thinks that he can have the first unidentified floating object ready for the water by 2021.What's crazy is that this isn't the designer's only exotic floating houseboat. Last year, Lazzarini Design Studio launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise nearly $400,000 to build a floating pyramid he calls a Waya. It's the first step towards a proposed self-sustaining floating community called Wayaland.Say what you want, but the man has vision.

Researchers Make More Affordable Fuel Cell

A team of researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a new fuel cell that reportedly lasts 10 times longer than any other current technology. The researchers believe that this advancement, coupled with mass production, could finally make the fuel cell economically viable and provide a suitable replacement to traditional gas-powered engines.According to the researchers, the cost would be comparable or even cheaper than gasoline engines. The fuel cell is promising, but based on the test vehicle design, let's hope they just stay focused on fuel cell technology and don't try to move into automotive design. Let's leave that to the Lazzarini's in this world. These fuel cells are designed to be more durable by delivering a constant amount of electricity as opposed to other designs that provide fluctuating energy.Fuel cells produce electricity from the chemical reaction when hydrogen and oxygen are combined to make water. By providing a constant amount of energy, the cell design can be simpler and thus, cheaper.Next, the researchers will work on the problem that has plagued the industry for years: getting people to use them.

How do you sum up a gay cruise for the uninitiated? For Swish Edition's Dale, Scott & Steve, our first Atlantis cruise disproved many of the preconceptions we brought onboard. Yes, “floating bathhouse” was at the top of all our lists, too. But when you get 5,000 gay guys (and a whopping 78 chicks) on the largest cruise ship in the world, surrounded by miles of water, 22 bars and all-night theme parties, hyper-gayness is bound to boil over. But it's not like hairless, chiseled 20-something models were screwing on the poop deck for all to see 24 hours a day. It's bacchanalian, sure, but not a balls-to-the-wall, free-for-all orgy at sea. Last week's cruise on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas sailed from Ft. Lauderdale on a 7-night itinerary that included ports of call in Labadee, Haiti and Costa Maya & Cozumel in Mexico. And despite the unfortunate (and according to official reports, self-inflicted) tragedy of a fellow passenger going overboard—and a medical “Alpha Alpha Alpha” here and there—fun was had by most everyone onboard. We were most pleasantly surprised to find that the passenger roster included every walk of gay life (and a handful of straights) from the requisite hairless twinkie boys to the fully adorned leather daddies. From sweet (looking) grandfatherly types to the random flamboyant queen with a man-purse. Average Joe couples to swingin' singles. And of course those 78 women, including a fair number of lesbians and a random fag hag. Atlantis welcomes a diverse cross-section, typically not portrayed in carefully crafted marketing photos. Sure, we understand marketing, so we're not blaming them for pushing the sexy, but please know that if you've got a little bit of a belly, and you're not manscaped to the hilt, you'll still fit in just fine. As long as you like to party. The floating cocktail party happens around the clock with dances under the stars most late nights featuring the hottest deejays on the high seas (with themes like “Mardi Glow” and the classic “White Party”); the rousing, costumed afternoon t-dances in the Aqua Theater (gotta give them fun titles, too, like “Over The Rainbow” and “Dog Tag”); smaller-venue events with themes catering to lovers of 90's music, bears, and leather; mixers for singles; a pre-dinner party for couples; a place for women to be women; and so on. Our favorite part at all the parties was people watching…hands down (or should I say, pants down?). When past cruisers told us that many pack an extra suitcase just for costumes, they weren't kidding. Since everything is themed and advertised in advance, there's ample time before embarkation to shop for rainbow striped jockstraps and matching knee-high socks, full Storm Trooper outfits, an entire leather get-up, outfits that glow in the dark, full military dress uniforms, elaborate headdresses…the list goes on and on. (We'd love to show you photos, but Atlantis keeps passengers' privacy a high priority. Another reason you've got to go see for yourself!) Of course, if a tired body wanted to escape the pounding beats and wild soirees, it was easy to slip into the Champagne & Martini or The Rising Tide bars for a quiet cocktail, conversation with a new friend or two, and the aforementioned people watching. Entertainment? We certainly weren't at a loss for options. To name just a few, Broadway and “Glee” star Idina Menzel packed the house with her booming voice and hilarious banter. Miss Richfield 1981 and Dixie Longate brought the props for their classic shows. The Allure cast staged an amazing high dive show as well as a pared down version of the musical “Chicago.” Cuties Travis Wall & Nick Lazzarini from TV's “So You Think You Can Dance” fame taught the cruisers how to move. And a gaggle of comedians like Alec Mapa, Erin Foley and Bruce Vilanch kept the laughs coming. “It's mostly bottoms that come to our shows, so they are very receptive,” another comedian, New York City-based Chris Doucette, explained. Royal Caribbean is known for their food and from extensive buffets, 6-course specialty restaurants, a Mexican cantina, a Johnny Rockets, the traditional dining room, and about a dozen other options available around the clock, the largest gym at sea certainly saw its share of guys working hard to keep the pounds off. A massive spa offered up Botox, acupuncture, massage and haircuts. The ship's shopping boutiques were all transformed to appeal to the gay demographic. The casino was made mostly non-smoking for the health conscious. And the very highest level of the pool deck was made over into a clothing optional oasis for the so inclined. And the only way I can truly sum it up is to say that there is absolutely something for everyone on a gay cruise, so if you've been apprehensive, rest assured, you'll have a blast, feel comfortable in your skin, eat like a king, be entertained constantly, meet new friends from around the globe, and you'll get lucky, too, if that's your thing. We certainly enjoyed our working vacation and thank Atlantis for including our talk show as an official part of the voyage*. You can hear the segments we recorded in the Allure's On Air Club below, including some of our stories from the cruise (an old dude secretly photographed Scott, another tried to offer Dale a cash tip, and Steve may have found “Love in a Hopeless Place”) plus our hilarious chats with comedians Jim David, Chris Doucette, Alec Mapa & Erin Foley as well as Travis Wall & Nick Lazzarini from TV's So You Think You Can Dance. Get ready to laugh, because a comic's perception of gay cruisin' will have you in stitches.
