How growing Saudi sports participation is impacting Saudi fashion, with Reiting Lee, Founder, The Oriental Hybrid

The 966

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2024 27:28

Show NotesThe 966, episode #131, with Reiting Lee, Founder of The Oriental Hybrid, explores the impact of the growing participation in sports and healthy activities in Saudi Arabia on the fashion industry, particularly sportswear and athleisure. Reiting Lee is deeply involved in the youth, sportswear and streetwear fashion sectors in Saudi Arabia and the region and is the dynamic founder of The Oriental Hybrid, a boutique consulting firm specializing in innovation strategy and intercultural communications, that serves Arab fashion brands and provides market insights and trend analysis for corporates and media outside of Saudi Arabia. The sportswear athleisure market in Saudi Arabia is currently valued at $1.3 billion and is expected to reach $1.5 billion by 2027, with an annual growth rate of 13%. The primary factors driving this lifestyle change and participation include social media influence, health awareness, overseas education, and government initiatives. Soccer, basketball, yoga, and volleyball are popular sports influencing fashion choices in Saudi Arabia. International brands like Adidas, Nike, Puma, and Fila dominate the market, with Adidas being the market leader. The Saudi 100 brand initiative, launched in 2021, aims to promote Saudi brands, including sportswear and streetwear. The sector has tremendous potential for growth, with opportunities for more female founders and female-friendly products. Collaboration between Saudi brands and international brands, as well as investment in localized campaigns and designs, can further accelerate the sector. The boost in tourism in Saudi Arabia is also expected to contribute to the growth of the sector. The conversation concludes with optimism about the future of Saudi sportswear and the potential for Saudi brands to become prominent in the global market.TakeawaysThe sportswear athleisure market in Saudi Arabia is growing rapidly, with a current value of $1.3 billion and an expected growth to $1.5 billion by 2027.Social media influence, health awareness, overseas education, and government initiatives are driving the lifestyle change and participation in sports and healthy activities in Saudi Arabia.Soccer, basketball, yoga, and volleyball are popular sports that are influencing fashion choices in Saudi Arabia.International brands like Adidas, Nike, Puma, and Fila dominate the sportswear market in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi 100 brand initiative aims to promote Saudi brands, including sportswear and streetwear, and there is potential for more female founders and female-friendly products in the sector.Collaboration between Saudi brands and international brands, investment in localized campaigns and designs, and the boost in tourism in Saudi Arabia can further accelerate the growth of the sportswear sector.TitlesThe Impact of Sports Participation on Saudi FashionThe Future of Saudi Sportswear: Growth and PotentialSound Bites"The sportswear category has generated $1.3 billion in 2022 and is still expected to grow more and reach $1.5 billion in 2027.""The boost and investment into the tourism of Saudi Arabia will also definitely accelerate the sector.""Out of the Saudi 100 brands, 34 of those brands are under the category of sportswear and streetwear."Chapters00:00Introduction and Background of Oriental Hybrid03:07The Impact of Sports Participation on Saudi Fashion05:15The Growth of the Sportswear Category in Saudi Arabia09:28The Dominance of International Brands in the Saudi Market11:50The Emergence of Saudi Brands and the Saudi 100 Program16:21The Most Influential Sports in Saudi Arabia20:36The Future Potential of the Sportswear and Athleisure Market23:12Women-Only Gyms and Modesty in Sportswear26:46Conclusion and Outlook for the SectorKeywordsSaudi Arabia, sports participation, fashion industry, sportswear, athleisure, Oriental Hybrid, innovation strategy, intercultural communications, market insights, trend analysis, social media influence, health awareness, overseas education, government initiatives, soccer, basketball, yoga, volleyball, international brands, Adidas, Nike, Puma, Fila, Saudi 100 brand initiative, female founders, female-friendly products, collaboration, localized campaigns, tourism, growth potential

Every year, the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, or SFIA, takes on a number of research projects designed to offer insight into the world of sports through the lens of participation, equipment sales and other metrics. But the Topline Participation Report is one of the longest-standing and most ambitious surveys the organization conducts. Each year, thousands of people are surveyed about which one of 124 different activities they participate in and how often. The end result is a wealth of data and trends that tracks which sports are gaining popularity and which are struggling. You may have heard the stat that pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States. That's true, and that stat comes from and is verified by this report, which shows the wildly popular sport up another 50 percent in participation in the past year. We'll go into why that remains the case, but the pickleball data only scratches the surface of this report. And in an Olympic year when many otherwise obscure sports get their highest visibility, you can expect some interesting things in the year ahead, which we'll go into as well. Another trend that's on the rise: team sports. More and more people are participating as a group and loving it. And we'll go into which team sports they are liking the most. All of this information is invaluable for those who are in the business of organizing and hosting sports events. And the best news of all — both for the industry and for humankind — is that overall, participation in sports events is up and inactivity is down, a trend that we can all get behind. So sit back and enjoy this conversation with SFIA President and CEO Tom Coveas we dive into the data to pick out all the trends you need to know.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Anzhela Fokina is the Chief Executive officer of the Kateryna Biloruska Foundation, a charitable organisation established in 2019 to promote Health and Wellbeing in Ukranian communities through Education and Sports Participation for everyone.   Anzhela has over 15 years experience in the Charitable and Social sector, having graduated from the Donetsk Institute of Economics and Humanities, with a Masters Degree in International Economics and Relations.  She previously worked for the agricultural giant Syngenta, running their Corporate Social Responsibility operation across almost 100 countries worldwide.  Anzhela co-ordinates the programme of activities for the KB Foundation, in spirts, education and mental health provision.  Her responsibilities also include developing and expanding partnerships with the non-profit sector and public organisations across Europe and in the Ukraine.  Anzhela on working with key partners: “Our owners and board members want to make a huge positive impact on society. If companies want to make a big impact on a community, they will do it. We don't have a big team, but we try to involve sports ambassadors using teachers. Also, we involve government because we can do things for 20, or 2,000 people. But the government cover the whole territory of the Ukraine and so we can multi-applicate our efforts and what we are doing, on a government level. When government and businesses co-operate with us, we can make good results in a short period of time.”  Anzhela on the challenges of working in the Ukraine currently: “It I really difficult, but now there are a lot of international projects working in Ukraine, but also our local operations too, because more and more people need support. Everyday it becomes more important because of the war and this conflict that we do things to help people with their health and mental health. That is more important than ever.”  Anzhela on the future ambitions of the Kateryna Biloruska Foundation: “We have now reached a very difficult task where we need to increase external funding through some donors and grants. We are facing a very difficult period of reconstructing Ukraine and that's why we need to increase assistance and at the end of the conflict, for at least 10 or 15 years, we will work with the consequences, which will primarily effect physical and mental health. It is a very big amount of people who would need this support.”

For years, the Sports & Fitness industry Association has studied which sports people participate in and how often. Perhaps just as important, they also track the number of people who say they don't participate in anything at all. For professionals in the sports-event industry, there is a tremendous amount of interesting data in the SFIA's recently released Topline Participation Report, including which individual sports are trending well and which team sports are trending well. If you're the organizer or a host city of a sports tournament or event, knowing where the interest lies could be the key to a successful future. As you'll hear, there is no doubting the incredible growth that pickleball has seen not just in the past year but for the past several years. But pickleball is not alone. In fact, all racquet sports are on the upswing, including tennis, which has the largest participation of all. In this conversation between SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz and SFIA President and CEO Tom Cove, we take a deep dive into the organization's latest report and talk about what sports and trends he's keeping an eye on next.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

THE BENEFITS OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS PARTICIPATION 2 x Ironman; Motivational Speaker; Positive Coaching Alliance Trainer; NSCA Certified Personal Trainer; Former Collegiate Bball Coach; Duke Univ. Alumna 2001 Missy West, a former Duke University Women's Basketball Athlete explains why sports and extracurricular participation is SO important for our youth. She touches on the value of the High School experience and why it's critical we give our children a positive life learning experience. Missy shares her your thoughts on: 1. Her top three life lessons learned through sports 2. How and what to sacrifice to be your best 3. How we can be a better sports parent, coach, role model for our student-athletes Missy West was a three-sport star out of Franklin Academy High School in Malone in the mid-1990s, setting numerous records in basketball, softball and soccer. In basketball, she averaged 29 points per game and was named Miss Basketball in New York as a senior. She scored 2,605 points and helped her team to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Section 10 title. In softball, she won 64 games and pitched 15 no-hitters and two perfect games and led her team to the New York state championship. She was selected Softball Player of the Year in New York and was chosen on the All-American team. She was a standout on the soccer field as well, scoring 63 goals and contributing 15 assists during her high school career. Missy played basketball at Duke University and was an integral member of the Blue Devils’ 1999 NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship team. She played professional basketball in Germany for three years winning a German National Championship both as a player and as a youth coach.    She then began a 12-year stint of collegiate coaching at the Division III and II levels earning three conference coach of the year awards as well as the Eastern Region Coach of the year and was one of 8 nominees up for National Coach of the Year in 2013.  She was inducted most recently in July to the National High School Hall of Fame in Providence, RI and presented the acceptance speech on behalf of all 11 inductees.  She has also been inducted into the New York State Hall of Fame, The New York State Softball Hall of Fame, and the Franklin Academy Hall of Fame.   She currently resides in Tampa, Florida and is a trainer for the Positive Coaching Alliance, a motivational speaker and a NSCA personal trainer.   She spends much of her spare time on her personal fitness and has completed 2 full Ironman’s with goals to complete many more. She also enjoys the outdoors, spending time with friends and family and serving others with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and The Boys and Girls Club. As far as my Motivational Speaking - I speak mainly to athletes, coaches, parents, and communities about the Benefits of Sports Participation.  I share a lot of my personal stories..How sports shaped me into a strong and confident woman, sports taught me how to communicate when I was scared to death to speak in a classroom, sports taught me how to fail and rise again - resilience. It taught me how to deal with a challenging coach/boss etc.   Sports goes far beyond the game itself…..   I also speak to a lot of school administrators about the life lessons we should be teaching our student athletes.  Why it’s crucial to have students involved in sports but also that not ever kid should get a trophy.  Through our sports participation we should be teaching life lessons….and teaching them how to lose is one of them.  Not creating opportunities where it’s easier for the student to “win.”

Stalking In an exclusive interview for All in the Mind, a woman who was harassed and threatened over four years by a female member of staff, calls for employers to take stalking in the workplace seriously. This former high-flying executive, who ran an organisation with thousands of staff with a multi million pound budget, tells Claudia Hammond about the death threats, abusive mails and harrassment that amounted to "four years of hell". How Infants Know Minds Parents are always amazed by how much their babies seem to understand, but the traditional view of psychologists, studying child development, has been in conflict with this. Psychologists' "Theory of Mind", suggests that until a child is 2 or 3, it's impossible for them to understand certain things, because they don't have an idea of their own mind, and by extension, can't possibly have an idea of somebody else's. But Vasu Reddy, Professor of Developmental and Cultural Psychology at the University of Portsmouth, has, for twenty years, been challenging these assumptions, with research demonstrating that babies can tease, joke and even play with our expectations, long before they can speak. Sports Participation after Major Sporting Events This week the government launched their Games4Life campaign with the aim of inspiring the nation to get active during this year's summer of sport. But does watching big sporting events like the Olympics encourage people take part in more sport or even just to take a bit more exercise? Claudia talks to Ken Fox, Emeritus Professor of Exercise and Health Science at Bristol University, about the psychology behind what motivates us to exercise and whether one of the common assumptions about the legacy of the 2012 games of a sportier, healthier nation stands up to the evidence. Producer: Fiona Hill.
