He taught himself to weld and experimented with many prototypes before coming up with his current Tilt4orce Velocar. Adaptive Adventures is an organization that provides freedom through mobility. They travel around the USA and beyond to serve thousands of disabled adults and children with challenge events in water sports, snow events and cycling. I had a fascinating conversation with Nina Paley, an animator, director, artist, and co-host of Heterodorx podcast. While some may know her award-winning animated films like "Sita Sings the Blues" and "Seder Masochism," our conversation delved deeper into her personal journey through cancel culture and her insights on scapegoating dynamics.Nina shared how her life changed dramatically in 2017 when she spoke up about gender identity issues after a year of careful research and consideration. The backlash was swift and severe – she was banned from festivals, speaking engagements dried up, and her career as a celebrated artist effectively came to an end. What struck me most was her evolution in processing this experience, particularly how she's come to view it through a spiritual lens, despite not being traditionally religious.We explored the ancient biblical concept of scapegoating, and Nina offered a compelling analysis of the difference between sacrifice and scapegoating. Through her research on Jesus Christ, she had a profound realization that helped her reframe her own experience – she could choose to see herself as a sacrifice rather than just a scapegoat, finding agency in a situation where she previously felt powerless.Our conversation touched on the psychological dynamics of cancel culture, the nature of tribal behavior, and the powerful energies that get activated when communities unite against a perceived internal threat. Nina's insights about how people often only "punch up" at those they perceive as powerful gave her a new perspective on her own cancellation.We also discussed her thoughts on artificial intelligence and its impact on artistic communion with audiences, leading to a poignant reflection on how the media landscape is rapidly changing. Nina shared vulnerably about the grief of losing her career and the ongoing process of accepting that the past cannot be recreated.What I appreciate most about Nina is her ability to maintain perspective while acknowledging pain. Despite everything she's been through, she hasn't lost her capacity for nuanced thinking or her recognition of human complexity. Armin Ziegler has toured in many places around the world with his recumbent bikes, trikes and velomobiles. This Swiss adventurer has a well regarded collection of travel blogs that have entertained bent riders for many years. As with many velomobile riders he had been stopped by curious police a number of times always ending in a friendly chat and quick return to the road. This past May his Greek velomobile tour ended abruptly with a quite different police encounter. Armin was stopped, arrested and had his velomobile confiscated. We talk to Armin about his love for bent travel, the stable of recumbents he maintains, and some of the places he's been. Then we delve deeply into his recent ill-fated tour of Greece. We have two incredibly inspiring stories that share a connection involving a Steintrike Wild One trike. First up we talk to John Gunterman. John is a US veteran who was injured in the middle east. He talks about his journey of recovery, how Steintrikes have played a part in it and how he now is dedicated to helping others ride to health. Tig Cross has been working on the Electrom for almost 8 years. Now in limited production he hopes to one day make his dream of a 2 wheeled light electric recumbent come true. He believes this bike has advantages that will make it a true "car replacement" option in the future. Our own Larry Seidman participated in two senior games events last month. He was excited to see some other recumbent riders at the Huntsman Senior Games in Utah and the Nevada Senior Games as well. Graham Browne's long career in digital design has included work with Jaguar, Dyson and Bentley. In the last few years his thoughts and efforts have turned to more low cost zero emission projects. By 2020 he had formed Northern Light Motors and developed a prototype light electric vehicle which has now gone into production in northern England. His intended market is more aimed at a cool and compelling car replacement than a screamingly fast racing machine. We talk to Graham about his company and ideas and then to our UK correspondent Barney Harle. Barney travelled to NLM headquarters, test rode the velo and regales us with his review.Next up is a look at the German Varitrike. “Why don't you just detransition?” Corinna Cohn is tired of fielding this question, but gracious enough to address it with me on today's episode. Corinna has lived as a transsexual woman for his entire adult life, and is over it. But the effects of cross-sex hormones and body modification surgeries cannot be reversed. In another frank and, at times, graphic discussion on the state of gender and sexuality in clown world, today we explore questions such as: is “detransitioner” the right word? How about victims of gender medicine, or survivors of gender malpractice? Given the facts that humans cannot actually change sex, and these medical procedures are experimental and often go horribly wrong, can postoperative transsexuals actually engage in pleasurable and painless sex? How on earth is this stuff getting sold to people when it causes so much damage? What do people expect from “transition?” Is there such a thing as “true trans?” What does Corinna think of the idea that “adults should be able to do whatever they want?” Does the existence of an underground market for niche body modification mean that doctors have an obligation to take a “harm reduction” approach and provide such “services” above-ground, and if so, should taxpayer dollars cover it? Ron Thompson is a mechanical engineer who has devoted considerable time working on this issue. He has designed, built and raced the Generation 4 (G4) recumbent bike. This work has encouraged him to conduct a scientific speed trial of 10 bike configurations both bent and upright to determine what can be learned about their inherent benefits and drawbacks. I was contacted by Jared Parseghian about his company Parbikes. They sell side-by-side recumbent tandem quadricycles. He invited my wife and me up to Toledo, Ohio for a look and a quick test ride on a beautiful autumn morning.
