Judith Joseph: High Functioning Judith Joseph is a Columbia-trained psychiatrist and the founder of and chief investigator at Manhattan Behavioral Medicine, New York City's premier clinical research site. She's also a clinical assistant professor in child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, and chairwoman of the Women in Medicine Board at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. She is the author of High Functioning: Overcome Your Hidden Depression and Reclaim Your Joy*. When we think about successful leaders, we often admire those who are loving towards others, can tolerate painful times, and know how to delay gratification. Those are all such important traits – and when we overindex on them, can become counter-productive. In this conversation, (Judith and I explore) when it's no longer working and how to find the joy again. Key Points Many people who are experiencing high-functioning depression don't realize it. High-functioning depression is often triggering by trauma. That can can be major trauma, but it can also be more common forms of trauma like divorce, workplace conflict, legal issues, and many more. Anhedonia is one of the most common ways high-functioning depression reveals itself. It looks like not seeking out joyful activities and also not experiencing joy in activities that used to bring joy. Masochism is the other common way high-functioning depression shows up. It manifests as a pattern of self-defeating, people-pleasing behavior. The “superpowers” that come with high-functioning depression are viewed by others and society as strengths. However, over-indexing on being loving, tolerating pain, and delayed gratification are counter-productive over time. Validation is a starting point for healing. Each person is unique and sometimes it's helpful to begin with movies or other creative works that help you recognize yourself. Send us a textWhat if the path to healing your deepest wounds lies in unexpected territory? Mistress Mia Payne, a professional dominatrix and certified therapeutic BDSM practitioner, reveals how controlled power exchange can unlock profound emotional release where traditional therapy falls short.Beyond Hollywood's misrepresentations, therapeutic BDSM creates safe spaces for processing trauma, anxiety, and depression through physical experiences that engage the body where emotions are stored. For some clients, it's about reclaiming power after abuse or trauma. For others—particularly high-achieving professionals—sessions provide rare moments of mental quiet when they temporarily surrender the burden of constant responsibility. From age regression therapy that nurtures the inner child to sensation play that triggers healing neurochemical releases, these modalities address needs as unique as the individuals seeking them.Shame emerges as the silent barrier to personal growth and intimate connection. Whether rooted in religious upbringing, strict parenting, or societal judgment, shame creates what Mistress Mia calls "a ribbon that runs through everything." By creating environments where all aspects of self are accepted, clients learn to integrate both shadow and light—a crucial step toward authentic living. "When we fully accept ourselves in all our parts," she explains, "then we can fully accept other people."Having recently completed certification with the Therapeutic BDSM Collaborative Network, Mistress Mia now partners with therapists to design customized experiences for clients who feel stuck in traditional healing approaches. She emphasizes finding skilled practitioners who understand not just techniques but human psychology, as this vulnerable work requires trustworthy guidance. In Throw Yourself Away: Writing and Masochism (Cambridge University Press, 2024), Julia Jarcho proposes that the desire to write is inextricably bound up with masochistic desires. In a series of readings that engage American and European works of fiction, drama, and theory from the late nineteenth through the early twenty-first centuries, Jarcho tests the limits of masochism as a pleasure-making economy. Reading Henry James, Henrik Ibsen, Mary Gaitskill, and Adrienne Kennedy alongside Sigmund Freud, Gilles Deleuze, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Leo Bersani and others, Jarcho investigates the ways in which masochism rewrites and reinvigorates failures of desire, which critics have otherwise thought of as dead-ending masochism. Jarcho asks particularly difficult questions of masochism as a response to injurious social structures, which yield less uniformly white, searching, and uneasy views of both masochism and authorship. Throw Yourself Away reconsiders how writing and subjects are undone by the excesses and recesses of masochistic desire, which keeps the prospect of pleasure so painfully, so deliciously at bay. Perversions of the Market: Sadism, Masochism, and the Culture of Capitalism (SUNY Press, 2024) argues that capitalism fosters sadism and masochism--not as individual psychological proclivities but as widespread institutionalized patterns of behavior. The book is divided into two parts: one historical and the other theoretical. In the first, Eugene W. Holland shows how, as capital becomes global in scale and drives production and consumption farther and farther apart, it perverts otherwise free markets, transforming sadism and masochism into borderline conditions and various supremacisms. The second part then turns to Deleuze and Guattari's 'schizoanalysis,' explaining how it helpfully embeds Freud's analysis of the family and Lacan's analysis of language within an analysis of the capitalist market and its psycho-dynamics. Drawing on literature and film throughout to illuminate the discontents of modern culture, Holland maintains that the sadistic relations of production and masochistic relations of consumption must be eliminated to prevent capitalism from destroying life as we know it. Warning: Please Be Advised - 18+ Adult Content Lyn welcomes alternative pleasure coach and mentor CJ to explore the intriguing world of BDSM and DS relationships. They discuss common misconceptions, such as:- BDSM and DS activities do not necessarily involve the giving or receiving of pain and can actually be exciting, pleasurable, playful and fun. CJ shares her personal journey into the realm of power exchange, highlighting the importance of communication, consent, and aftercare in fostering intimacy and connection.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Definitions of BDSM and DS: BDSM stands for Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism, while DS refers to Dominance and Submission. These concepts encompass a variety of relationship styles and power exchange dynamics. BDSM does not inherently involve pain. Participants can explore different aspects of BDSM and choose what they enjoy, allowing for a personalised experience that may or may not include pain. Clear communication and explicit consent are fundamental in BDSM relationships. Negotiating experiences and understanding each other's boundaries can enhance intimacy and trust. Aftercare is crucial following intense experiences in BDSM, as it helps individuals transition back to everyday life. This practice can also be beneficial in non-BDSM relationships, emphasising the need for emotional check-ins after intimate encounters. BEST MOMENTS "There is a very often, including myself, and in the media, a representation of BDSM as one thing... that involves pain. But you can cherry pick things you enjoy and say no to others." "When you surrender to someone, if trust is broken, even in minute ways, it's damaging... this container can really kind of enlighten a person." "It's possible to be one thing in your everyday life, and another in your pleasure experience. It's something fun that you can play with." "We all have something a little bit kinky that we enjoy... let's try to be open, but also have boundaries around people shaming us for things." This one is a doozy! John Edward Robinson may be the most intelligent serial killer I've ever come across. This guy fooled so, so many people with over 40 years of brazen crimes. Doctors, psychiatrists, detectives, and so, so many victims. In addition to being a serial killer, this BDSM-obsessed dirtbag, scammed hundreds if not thousands of people for four decades. Merch and more: www.badmagicproductions.com Timesuck Discord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89vWant to join the Cult of the Curious PrivateFacebook Group? Gigi Raven Wilbur is an American bisexual rights activist and writer. They have a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in social work. I suspect 50 Shades of Grey has contributed to confusion around what BDSM entails and how it can be used to enhance one's intimate life. I recall upon reading it and all the publicity that ensued upon its publication that there was outrage from those within the BDSM community that their lifestyle choice should be portrayed so inaccurately. Even my kids who knew I dabbled in this world said at the time, “You should go on TV and tell them it's not like this!” The fact is that BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism) has many benefits as Gigi and I discuss during this podcast. It can enhance one's intimate relationships by enabling conversations that touch on consent, power dynamics, pain and sometimes how this may relate to earlier trauma. It can, without any penetration being involved, transport its participants to altered states of consciousness, sometimes called sub-space. And it can be playful, imaginative and fun. In my experience, people I've met in the lifestyle are some of the most open and considerate people I know, for whom consent is paramount and pleasure is key.Gigi is also deeply involved with the BDSM world. Today, she advocates for the healing, cathartic, and spiritual power of BDSM as founder and Sacred Harlot of Aphrodite's Temple. This modern-day sex temple provides sex-positive education and a sex-positive sacred play space for adults. Gigi's book is called The Dominant's Handbook: an Intimate Guide to BDSM Play. Gigi wrote the essay Walking in Shadows: Third Gender and Spirituality about her intersex identity. If you're interested in exploring this further, check out these links:The BDSM Interest Evaluation - https://www.ravenslairleather.com/free-offersThe Dominant's Handbook - An Intimate Guide to BDSM -https://www.ravenslairleather.com/ravenslairbooksAdult Bedtime Stories - https://rss.com/podcasts/adult-bedtime-stories/ Get full access to Sex Advice for Seniors at www.sexadviceforseniors.com/subscribe

Just like many riders don't fully understand the mechanics of their bikes or take the time to get in tune with them, people often do the same with their bodies when it comes to what brings pleasure or deeper intimacy. In this episode, we sit down with fellow rider Kristina Sheridan, owner of Coastal Clarity Discomfort Spa in Nova Scotia. Kristina is here to help us explore the world of BDSM – that's Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism, and Masochism. It's a topic that many see as taboo, but it really shouldn't be. We're using this interview to ask the questions you may have been afraid to or never thought to ask.Our nervous system can imprint experiences based on our first sexual encounters. Often, those first experiences aren't great and can even be negative or traumatic, leading to dissatisfaction or shame that prevents further exploration. BDSM can be a powerful tool for personal growth by providing a way to release and exchange energy, foster deeper connections, and shed shame to strive toward sexual freedom. By exploring boundaries and trust within a safe and consensual environment, individuals can experience a profound sense of empowerment and self-discovery.Kinks and desires shouldn't be shamed; they should be explored and celebrated. Kristina shares her journey of bringing the world's first discomfort spa to life, what to expect in the dungeon, and her reasons for wanting to do this work. She offers insights into how BDSM can be used therapeutically to help people connect with their true selves. So, rev up your curiosity engines -- This is The MotovationConnect with Kristina Sheridan of Coastal Clarity Discomfort Spa:https://www.instagram.com/coastalclarity_discomfortspa/ https://www.instagram.com/sher_latex/https://www.instagram.com/sherkris/ Connect with The Motovation Podcast:www.themotovation.comhttps://linktr.ee/motovationpodcast https://www.instagram.com/motovationpodcast/

I find this topic personally intriguing, as it's a mindset that I struggle to fully comprehend. With an anthropological approach, we aim to explore this subject without constantly passing moral judgment. Sadism, the pleasure derived from causing pain to others, is contrasted with consensual acts of physical pain or humiliation for sexual gratification known as BDSM. I believe that as long as these behaviors are consensual and don't result in irreversible harm, they may not be a moral concern. Furthermore, I argue that many dysfunctions in society may have a sexual element, such as the behavior of a stereotypical Karen or couples engaging in hostile fights. Additionally, the power dynamics and domination present in public rituals or workplace hierarchies can harbor sadistic components. While I personally feel perplexed by sadism, I'm interested in exploring it without constantly condemning it.Chapters0:00:00 Introduction to the Fascinating Topic of Sadism0:03:50 Society's Dysfunctions and the Relationship to Sadistic Tendencies0:07:05 The Suspension of Disbelief and Sadistic Satisfaction in Fictional Violence0:07:29 The Complexity of Sadism and Paraphilias0:12:48 Paraphilias and the Distinction from Healthy Sexuality0:18:16 Hypermasculinity and the Capacity to Avoid Empathy0:21:05 Women's Expectations of Selective Empathy in Men0:28:12 The dynamics of power and masochism in relationships.0:32:10 The nature of women's thrill in being desired.0:35:50 The importance of bravery in pursuing attractive partners.0:38:42 The Pitfalls of Settling for Less0:47:22 Freud's Observations on Sadism and Masochism0:49:06 The Purpose of Pleasure: Selfishness or Pair Bonding?0:54:15 Gifts and Abilities: Serving Self or World?0:56:51 The Dehumanization of Excellence and Competition1:00:03 Domination and Submission: The Absence of Reason and Negotiation

Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

This episode, we focus on one of Gatman's most gafflingly grazen gad guys, the Ventriloquist (and Scarface!) Who's really pulling the strings? Listen now to find out! Intro Reminder of PuchiCon appearance Background (3:00) Important to note that in this version, the dummy was made from wood used in Blackgate's old gallows, and there are conflicting reports whether the dummy is possessed or not Ventriloquist (Arnold Wesker) created by John Wagner, Alan Grant, and Norm Breyfogle in Detective Comics #583 (Feb. 1988) Arnold Wesker is a meek man from a mafia family – originally developed DID after witnessing his mother's murder His origin was later retconned – imprisoned in Blackgate prison, he begins hearing voices from a dummy named Woody, and the voices convince him to murder his cellmate – during the fight, Woody is damaged, and takes on the name Scarface In either version, Scarface becomes the controlling force, and Wesker is his “puppet” - to the point that Scarface becomes enraged if people insist on speaking to Wesker and not him One telltale sign is that Wesker/Scarface is unable to pronounce the letter B, replacing it with G - Batman becomes Gatman, bullets become gullets, etc. At one point Wesker was committed to Arkham Asylum, and upon escaping used a sock puppet named Socko - when Scarface learned he had been replaced, he and Socko had a gunfight, resulting in damage to Wesker's hands #BecauseComics After an earthquake nearly destroys Gotham, a new villain called the Quakemaster shows up demanding a ransom to prevent further earthquakes - Tim Drake is able to deduce it's Scarface because Quakemaster refuses to pronounce words with the letter B Has an on-again/off-again partnership with the Penguin, where they often break each other out of prison and work together on criminal enterprises Murdered by Tally Man in an effort to frame Harvey Dent Later resurrected during Blackest Night as a member of the Black Lantern Corps, and creates a construct of Scarface with his ring New 52 - he was never killed, and was hospitalized for treatment of his DID Briefly controlled by the Venom serum, but was taken down by Nightwing and Damian Wayne Succeeded as Ventriloquist by a woman named Shauna Belzer, who had her own puppet Ferdie He helped Batman defeat Psycho-Pirate, because his DID was able to override Pirate's emotion control powers since Scarface was really in charge Issues - the pawn who would be king (7:03) Dissociation, Depersonalization, and Derealization Subordination (14:03) Masochism (21:04) Break (26:01) Plugs for Popcorn Psychology, Ocho Duro Parlay Hour, and Phillip Kennedy Johnson Treatment (26:56) In-universe - introduce ways to take Scarface out of commission Out of universe - work on scaling down and away from coping mechanism (30:10) Skit (34:06) DOC: Hello Mr. Wesker, I'm Dr. Issues. SCARFACE: Nope, you're talking to ME, doc. Leave the dummy outta this. WESKER: W-w-well at least l-l-let me say h-h-hello f-first. SCARFACE: Shut yer yap and lemme do the talking. The less you talk, the faster we can greak outta here and get gack to gusiness. DOC: I love Vaudeville as much as anybody, but SCARFACE: *interrupting* that explains your practice DOC: Hey! DOC: Mr. Wesker, are you going to stand for this? SCARFACE: He doesn't have to, that's why he's sittin down. And you're gonna be layin down for a dirt nap if you don't keep your eyes on me! DOC: You don't have any weapons. That tommy gun is a toy. I'm not stupid. SCARFACE: My noggin is like taking a Louisville slugger to the jaw if you're unprepared. DOC: If you're so bright, have you figured out a way to resolve your anger without resorting to violence? SCARFACE: Resort? You darn right I resort. A hideout full of moola and the screams of my enemies make crime a vacation.  DOC: Is that what Wesker wants? SCARFACE: Who cares what he wants?  DOC: I do. And if this is you, Arnold, then I'm willing to work with you in this…unique arrangement. SCARFACE: I'm confused. Are you talking to me or to him? DOC: Yes. SCARFACE: *pause* Ooooh, you're a slick one, aintcha? Gut there's no one else you need to talk to.  DOC: Thank goodness. So, I'll make sure I only direct my questions to you, and you'll answer, and I'll make sure it's documented in your chart, under your name. Just spell it for me so I get it right. I know you run the show, and I'm giving you the attention you deserve. If the other part is not important according to you, fine. But I won't let your reality get in the way of mine. SCARFACE: YOU SICKO! Don't toy with my emotions. DOC: Don't use your emotions as toys WESKER: Please stop fighting DOC: who said that? SCARFACE: NOBODY! DUMMY, SHUT UP!  WESKER: yes sir DOC: You seem to have an issue with a part of you that is intimidated. What do you plan to do to strengthen it?  SCARFACE: I'm not weak; that loser DOC:*interrupting* You're a loser; got it. SCARFACE: I'm not here to be insulted! WESKER: You usually leave that to me DOC: Progress! Now if you could only get him to stop shoving his hand inside you to compensate, you wouldn't be so uptight SCARFACE: *pause* wait…are you actually trying to treat me here? DOC: It wasn't my first idea but if it's the only way I can ultimately give you some peace and have fewer people hurt, I'll make it work. SCARFACE: *exaggerated wistful sigh* Maybe I can finally get a world without Dummy. A mafioso can dream. DOC: Um…erm…something like that. Anyway, I noticed that I didn't get my usual fee before the session, so I'm going to have to bill you for the balance. SCARFACE: *deadpan* Oh…Dummy takes care of that  WESKER: I DO NOT DOC: WHAT? There are few grand narratives that loom over Asian Americans more than the “model minority.” While many Asian Americanist scholars and activists aim to disprove the model minority as “myth,” author Takeo Rivera instead rethinks the model minority as cultural politics. Rather than disproving the model minority, Rivera instead argues that Asian Americans have formulated their racial and gendered subjectivities in relation to what Rivera terms “model minority masochism.” Examining hegemonic masculine Asian American cultural performance across multiple media, from literature and theater to videogames and activist archives, Rivera details two complementary forms of contemporary racial masochism: a self-subjugating masochism which embraces the model minority, and its opposite, a self-flagellating masochism that punishes oneself for having been associated with the model minority at all. Listen in as we discuss his book Model Minority Masochism: Performing the Cultural Politics of Asian American Masculinity (Oxford UP, 2022) Julia H. Lee is professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She is the author of three books: Interracial Encounters: Reciprocal Representations in African and Asian American Literatures, 1896-1937 (New York University Press, 2011), Understanding Maxine Hong Kingston (University of South Carolina Press, 2018), and The Racial Railroad (New York University Press, 2022).
