Hang onto your slipcases because Blake Howard (One Heat Minute Productions) and special guest Sean Burns (film critic) will discuss the greatness of the departed Gene Hackman in the special CRITERION COLLECTION 4K release of NIGHT MOVES.Night MovesArthur Penn's haunting neonoir reimagines the hard-boiled detective film for the disillusioned, paranoid 1970s. In one of his greatest performances, Gene Hackman oozes world-weary cynicism as a private investigator whose search for an actress's missing daughter (Melanie Griffith) leads him from the Hollywood Hills to the Florida Keys, where he is pulled into a sordid family drama and a sinister conspiracy he can hardly grasp. Bolstered by Alan Sharp's genre-scrambling script and Dede Allen's elliptical editing, the daringly labyrinthine Night Moves is a defining work of post-Watergate cinema—a silent scream of existential dread and moral decay whose legend has only grown with time.4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special featuresNew audio commentary by Matthew Asprey Gear, author of Moseby ConfidentialNew audio interview with actor Jennifer WarrenInterview with director Arthur Penn from a 1975 episode of Cinema ShowcaseInterview with Penn from the 1995 documentary Arthur Penn: A Love Affair with FilmThe Day of the Director, a behind-the-scenes featuretteTrailerEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by critic Mark HarrisNew cover by Greg ManchessSean BurnsSean Burns is a film critic for WBUR's Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee. In episode three of our Visionary Remakes season, we bite into Dawn of the Dead, the original by George Romero from 1978 and the kinetic remake by Zack Snyder from 2004.Special Guest: Karl Delossantos, founder and film critic at Smash Cut, editor at The New York Times, a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, and member of the Online Film Critics Society.George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978) was my favorite film through my 20s and 30s (Dan here). The horror film's intoxicating mixture of gonzo production, revolting gore, pitch black satire, and anti-consumerist musings were a perfect match for my young adult mind. My adoration hasn't faded at all since I first saw it in high school, some 25 years ago. Dawn of the Dead is often considered Romero's masterpiece and perhaps the greatest zombie film ever made. The remake of Dawn of the Dead landed like an atom bomb in 2004. Running zombies! Zach Snyder's first, and inarguably his best, film helped launch a zombie cultural moment that peaked 10 years later when 22 million people watched the season five opener of The Walking Dead, a tv show heavily indebted to George Romero's dead universe. Zombies had become mass appeal. "What would you do in an zombie apocalypse" became a lamestream icebreaker question. While Snyder's Dawn was a catalyst for this popularity, it was really the ideas in Romero's Dead films that attracted people to this once very niche subgenre of horror.

Coppola is not only one of my very favorite directors and someone whose work I've written about multiple times, but oddly enough, she also inspired my film school nickname of "Sof," which was bestowed upon me by a guy who insisted I looked like the gorgeous filmmaker, despite my arguments to the contrary. In this super-sized episode, which runs the length of Lost in Translation, Roxana and I embark on a chronological journey through each one of Coppola's seven feature films. Offering an insightful, entertaining, and in-depth analysis of what these movies mean to us, we discuss recurring themes in Coppola's work and the way that her films reflect both the female experience as well as her own unique point-of-view.A must-listen for Sofia Coppola fans and/or a conversation that will hopefully inspire you to take a closer look at her filmography, it was a joy and a privilege to chat with Roxana in what is easily one of my favorite episodes of Watch With Jen & Friends so far.Originally Posted on Patreon (11/12/20) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/43828132Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Everything Imaginable

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2020 103:54

Adam Lippe, born in March of 1978 in New York City, is a writer-producer-director living in Phoenixville, PA. His interest in film began early on, and he began writing film criticism at the age of 15 while attending Riverdale Country School, first in direct competition with his school newspaper, and eventually for the paper itself. He made his first movie, The Stranger, a dark, satirical drama, at the age of 16. The film was wildly ambitious, especially in terms of its multi-layered soundtrack, forcing him to constantly have to create workarounds for the primitive editing equipment that the school had available. In college, both at Hampshire and Emerson College, Adam continued his interest in macabre humor, making short films and music videos, as well as directing live television versions of his comedic sketches. After returning to film criticism in 2002, writing for various magazines and websites, he became a full time critic and columnist in 2008, first for the Columbus, Ohio paper Outlook Weekly, and then his own website, A Regrettable Moment of Sincerity, in 2009. That led to his reviews appearing on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming a member of the Online Film Critics Society, as well as being named one of the top film critics in America while being featured in a TV ad for Examiner.com appearing all over the country.  During that highly prolific period, Adam started Medium Rare Cinema, a weekly film series hosted at a local movie theater (though the movies were projected from video sources), comprised entirely of films not available for viewing in the USA. This involved tracking down the rights holders for each film and clearing them for public screening, putting together trailer compilations and short films that related to each film and writing a lengthy essay about each and every film screened.  Eventually this meant obtaining rare footage and re-creating director’s cuts that were never released either due to censorship or studio interference. Films by directors like John Woo, John Boorman, Ringo Lam, and Gillo Pontecorvo had their films completely transformed, which not only involved combining different sources and color correcting, but often completely re-writing a film’s subtitles to improve the quality of the translation.  Beginning in 2013, Adam began writing a horror-comedy, Wait, Wait, Don’t Kill Me, about a mysterious virus that gets loose in inner-city Philadelphia. When the government tries to shut down the spread and realizes they can’t, they decide to fence off the locals and let everyone die. Slowly, but surely, Adam secured financing and cast the movie out of New York, shooting the SAG New Media film in Philadelphia. The completed movie, which Adam wrote, produced and directed, features 40 locations, 45 speaking parts and more than 100 extras, was shot in fits and starts over a period of several years. The film also incorporates footage shot both during the Pope’s and the DNC’s visit to Philadelphia, which coincidentally supported the movie’s notion of a city being blocked off by elaborate fences and large amounts of security.  Wait, Wait, Don’t Kill Me was completed in late March 2020, amidst an actual worldwide viral pandemic, and has secured distribution.

“It was a reverse floor plan, with bedrooms on the entrance level and then upstairs the kitchen, maybe more than one, and various entertainment areas. The house should have been full of law enforcement. Instead, the boys from Protect and Serve had set up a command post at the pool cabana, somewhere out in back. Like getting in some last-minute free catering before their federal overlords showed up. Sounds of distant splashing, rock n roll radio, eating between means. Some kidnapping. ”…In the time it took [Sloane] to lead him through a dim sunken interior full of taupe carpeting, suede upholstery, and teak, which seemed to extend indefinitely in the direction of Pasadena, Doc learned that she had a degree from the London School of economics, had recently begun studying tantric yoga, and had met Mickey Wolfmann originally in Las Vegas.” There’s a reason why our buddy Thomas Pynchon describes the House of Wolfmann as a descent into Hell—for Doc, it kinda is. Having just met a salt-of-the-earth gal like Hope Harlingen (heroin and heaving and hardons aside), who with a quiet and modest dignity refuses to accept the death of her husband despite no support from the cops or the banks, it must be a shock to the system for our knockabout dick to find a woman outright celebrating the non-death of her missing husband with the cops and the banks and everyone else on the wrong side of karma in 1970. And that’s this scene in a nut, isn’t it? It’s a dichotomous portrait of lives on either side of the Golden Fang—the good lives the fangs chew to pieces…and the gaudy lives those fangs feed… About the GuestCOURTNEY HOWARDWith bylines in VARIETY and FRESH FICTION TV, film critic Courtney Howard is a member of the LA Film Critics Association, the Critics Choice Association, the Online Film Critics Society, and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists.
