Happy gold medals top Africa! And happy new episode to you! The only podcast certified to be played by Motswana sprinters before beating arrogant Americans brings you something different. Today, Dan & Phil cross over to Kenya to speak to former radio host, entrepreneur, and podcast host Adelle Onyango. Almost 3 years ago, Adelle hosted us as guests on her HUGE podcast Legally Clueless (you can find the episode here), and it was our pleasure to return the favour and speak to her in this week's episode. Adelle tells us her inspiring story, starting as a (struggling) poet before making her way to radio, and building the 3rd biggest show in the country before leaving once again to start a company and a podcast. Adelle is also actively involved in the protests in Kenya, in fact, she had just arrived from dodging police and teargas for the recording! She shares the story behind the reason for the protests and how Kenya's youth are leading the charge. What an inspiring episode, enjoy! In this podcast, Tom Pearson chats to Tom Onyango and Chetan Hayer, the experts at the forefront of Kenya's internationally recognised real estate development, The Marquis. Leading Kenyan law firm TripleOKLaw LLP has collaborated with Hayer One, a property development company, to deliver a landmark residential property in Nairobi, The Marquis. Recognised for its architectural design, superior build quality, ultra-modern finishes and a range of amenities, The Marquis has set new standards in the Kenyan property development sector. Chetan Hayer, the CEO of Hayer One, says their vision was to create a desirable, high-value real estate development to cater for those who want to experience a high-end lifestyle. What's more, Hayer says that the entire project, from start to finish, has been delivered by Kenyans for Kenyans through Kenyan financing. “It is the people of Kenya who, through their hard work, their skill and, most importantly, their resilience, have shown to the rest of the world that we can produce an extremely high, Grade A quality residential development in the heart of Nairobi which, when you put it next to any Grade A development in any other developed city in the world, would compete very well,” Hayer shared. Tom Onyango, a senior partner at TripleOKLaw, has a wealth of experience and insight into the legal intricacies of real estate development and worked alongside Hayer on The Marquis. Onyango says having a reputable developer, ensuring the proper title documents and approvals are in place, and understanding the interest rates when borrowing for purchase, should be among the key considerations for investors. He adds that when it comes to legislative changes, further clarity is needed on taxation, and he explains why better financing models are needed for buyers who want to purchase properties sold off plan. He says the legal team at TripleOKLaw is uniquely positioned to assist in the success of real estate projects in Kenya because of the team's dedicated resources, and explains that the firm's aim is to minimise the risks and ensure the projects succeed. The conversation wraps up with Hayer sharing his future development plans.

Host Carl Lewis is joined by coach and analyst Grant de Smidt as they review the DSTV Premiership match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns subjected Kaizer Chiefs to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane on Saturday afternoon. Gaston Sirino opened the scoring for the hosts in the sixth minute following a mix-up between Siyabonga Ngezana and goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma in the Chiefs box. Ngezana was culpable once again in Masandawana's second goal, bringing down Peter Shalulile in the 16th minute for a needless penalty, though Zitha Kwinika was mistakenly shown a yellow card for the foul by referee Victor Gomes. The Namibian dusted himself to double the lead from the spot. Shalulile got his second goal of the afternoon after firing past the helpless Bvuma in the 53rd minute. Ronwen Williams saved a 56th minute penalty by Khama Billiat, for good measure. The highly-rated Abubeker Nessir introduced himself to South African football rather frighteningly with a sensational goal in the 76th minute to complete the embarrassing rout. Mamelodi Sundowns: Williams, Modiba, Mudau, B. Onyango, De Reuck, Mokoena, Jali, Zwane, Sirino, Shalulile Subs: D. Onyango, Morena, Lebusa, Mkhulise, Kapinga, Nasir, Lakay, Domingo, Kutumela. Listen to hosts, Mimi and Kim as they interview Rt. Rev. Dr. Emily Onyango in the Global Impact thread. Emily's deep humility and focus on leadership as service versus power was profoundly evident in her life and vocation. Modeling herself after her Sunday School teacher, Emily remains deeply committed to girls, women, and youth. Emily models the confidence of Christian women, which she also celebrates in the women leaders of the East African Revivals in her book, Gender and Development: A History of Women's Education in Kenya. As Bishop in her community, Emily takes on the role of grandparents who nurture youth spiritually, socially, educationally, and economically. She reminds her community that while they lack economic wealth, God has given them great joy in their relationships. Emily discusses her joy both in serving beside the male bishops, but especially in in serving with the second woman bishop Rt. Rev. Rose Okeno ordained shortly after Emily. She speaks of their sister alliance that gently reminds their brother bishops they are now joined by sister bishops in God's work. Bio Last year Rt. Rev. Dr. Emily Onyango was ordained as the first woman bishop in the Anglican Church of Kenya. She serves as senior lecturer and dean of students at St. Paul's University in Limuru, Kenya. She earned a PhD from the University of Wales, a ThM from the Asian Center for Theological Studies and Mission in Seoul, South Korea, and a BD from St. Paul's University, Limuru. He shares his thoughts and experiences about creating a joke-telling chat bot, navigating team dynamics and finding peace with letting go of ideas. Finally, Henry discusses his view of money as a tool to create positive impacts on peoples' lives and how implementing a universal basic income can lead to solving poverty.

On this episode, we are joined by Oyango Otieno aka Rixpoet. Far from theory is Oyango's experiential knowledge on the subject of masculinity is so enriching such that it gives you enough reason to unlearn and learn about gender dynamics and how you can do better. From coming out with his story of rape and depression and being ridiculed by men, he has taken it as part of his life's work to disabuse a lot of minds and lead fellow men to healthy masculinity that isn't afraid to speak their truth, treat women better and do things right. From this episode, you will understand that "by far the worst thing we do to males — by making them feel they have to be hard — is that we leave them with very fragile egos. The harder a man feels compelled to be, the weaker his ego is" - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. By the basic fact that you are a human being, you have human rights. Nelson and Onyango share their personal stories. These past few days and generally the entire month of March have seen us expose what is yet a huge gap in the GBV space. We still cannot talk about rape without thinking that it is only a violent act, we cannot speak of rape without blaming the victim, we cannot speak of rape without focusing on the perpetrators and justice. Our understanding of rape is still very narrow and a lot of stigmas still surround it. Rape can happen to anyone, female and male. No one is immune to trauma. We need to believe victims, we need to seek justice for them, we need to create safe spaces and honest social conversations that foster and bring healing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/samburuchronicles/message

Michelle Onyango was last on the show in episode 1037. It's funny, because the biggest takeaway for Michelle wasn't actually the big "aha" she had from that chat at all. It's always interesting to see what happens after an important coaching call. Michelle sat down and did some brainstorming, and that simple exercise gave her some amazing clarity on what her next step should be. And it turns out that step positioned her perfectly in her space once COVID hit. Michelle takes us through it all and dives into her next-step strategies. We go over her business offerings, whether she should make a price increase, and the struggles her business is having due to COVID, and Michelle gives her advice for entrepreneurs who find themselves at a similar crossroads. Note: we will discuss sexual assault in this episode and advise our listeners to practice discretion in tuning in.“Everybody's story is valid. The fact that people feel they cannot speak up about their own pain is my motivator.” - Onyango OtienoAt twenty years old, Onyango Otieno was the victim of sexual assault and found he had no where to turn. In Kenya, as in many other societies, the patriarchal structure turns a blind eye to the sexual experiences of men. Men are socially conditioned to hold in their pain. Because of his background as a storyteller, Onyango instead began writing about his experience. In sharing his story on Facebook and Twitter, he found “some kind of liberation.”Onyango continued exploring African masculinity and advocating for mental health, and eventually put up a post sharing that he was starting a WhatsApp-based mental health support group.Over 200 people raised their hands to join him there. Onyango put these folks into two groups and offered some basic community guidelines that allowed members to define the space the way they wanted. Today they call these groups Nyumbani, which is Swahili for “home.”We talked with Onyango about structuring a community support group starting with community guidelines and his personal self-care as he leads people to unpack trauma. Highlights, inspiration, & key learnings:Sending a signal. Onyango sent a call for men who wanted to join a support group.Watering hole. Gathering on WhatsApp and creating community guidelines.Healing circles. A participatory shared activity where men share stories of sexual assault, often for the first time.Self-care. Onyango’s practices to check in with his emotions.
Even though sexual violence is predominantly targeted at women, there are a lot of stories that go untold where the victims to this heinous crimes are men. And because of the patterns created by the patriarchy, a lot of men would rather die with this secret causing them a lot of shame which can then lead to a myriad of mental health issues. We are joined today by Onyango Otieno AKA Rix the poet as he discussed his rape and what the culmination of his upbringing has taught him and how he is continuing to help your men around Kenya. ---------- A L L C O N T E N T https://linktr.ee/karenkazlucas --------- P R O D U C E D B Y Karen kaz Lucas --------- B U S I N E S S I N Q U I R I E S For business inquiries, Email - host@thespreadpodcast.com kaz@kazentertainment.com ---------- F I N D U S Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/thespreadpod/ https://www.instagram.com/karenkazlucas/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/thespreadpod/ https://www.facebook.com/karenkazlucas/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/thespreadpod https://twitter.com/Karenkazlucas ---------- O U R G U E S T S: Onyango Otieno - @rixpoet onyangohome@gmail.com ---------- P O D C A S T O F T H E W E E K: This weeks podcast of the week is: Chai with Valerie - https://podcasts.apple.com/ke/podcast/chai/id1540831873 Valerie Kimani, singer, song writer, formerly cirque du sole performer is back in the scene this time with a podcast! In case you know, Adelle Onyango is indeed a fierce woman — driving conversations, I mean meaningful and impactful conversations about Africa and its people, about their raw yet unique human journey from diverse perspectives. After working as a radio presenter for over a decade at Kiss FM, a reputable Kenyan radio station, she now sets out to foray into a more self-fulfiling career in podcasting. Her path to stardom as an award-winning media personality has never been more awe-inspiring. She started the weekly podcast series, Legally Clueless where she's currently documenting 100 African Stories that will inspire you. Even more, Adelle was listed among BBC100 Women ’17, a Facebook icon of change ’19, OkayAfrica's Top Women of '18, and also, among 100 influential Africans ’19. She also founded an initiative geared towards educating the public on issues facing vulnerable and minority populations, specifically women and youths, and also creating solutions-oriented content for them. Yes, on our talk show, we caught up with and hosted the quintessential amazon whose story already reads like a lofty wish. So, in this episode, she shared some unique parts of her life, her career journey, and also how she got her podcast to be syndicated on Trace FM (Kenya), a global radio station. Her podcast is the first syndicated podcast in Eastern Africa on radio — already with plans to also be syndicated on Trace FM (Ghana). Two words of inspiration from our richly insightful conversation was ”Keep doing!” And if this is not amazing and awesome, then I wonder what is. Have a vicarious listening pleasure ahead, and I hope this motivates you to keep pursuing your dream, no matter what it is. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talk-with-todah/message

A., Opot, B., Cheruiyot, A., Yeda, R., Okudo, C., Okoth, R., Campo, J., Wallqvist, A., Akala, H., Ochiel, D., Ogutu, B., Chaudhury, S., Kamau, E. Abstract: The role of humoral immunity on the efficacy of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT) has not been investigated, yet naturally acquired immunity is key determinant of antimalarial therapeutic response. We conducted a therapeutic efficacy study in high transmission settings of western Kenya, which showed artesunate-mefloquine (ASMQ) and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) were more efficacious than artemether-lumefantrine (AL). To investigate the underlying prophylactic mechanism, we compared a broad range of humoral immune responses in cohort I study participants treated with ASMQ or AL, and applied machine-learning (ML) models using immunoprofile data to analyze individual participants treatment outcome. We showed ML models could predict treatment outcome for ASMQ but no AL with high (72-92%) accuracy. Simulated PK profiling provided evidence demonstrating specific humoral immunity confers protection in the presence of sub-therapeutic residual mefloquine concentration. We concluded patient humoral immunity and partner drug interact to provide long prophylactic effect of ASMQ. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
In today's world, reinvention is competence and only those leaders who are able to adapt to the fast changes with leadership that is prepared to challenge the status quo will have a chance to lead their organizations to last success. The reality of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA)requires you and your business to seek new orientations and take a fresh approach to management. We need to develop empathetic behavior as meaning and purpose takes a central role in business activity. This will be defined by freedom, creativity, speed, flexibility, and a corporate culture that connects people. For reinvention to happen, we need introspection and reflection for growth and it demands from us all, a new mindset as well as a new set of skills. We all evolve. Change is all about reinvention and comes from an immediate need. It can be facilitated by transitions, marriage, divorce, death of a loved one, need for a new job, addiction, and other life events. We will survive and thrive by consistently remaking ourselves using uncertainty as an opportunity to develop our reinvention competence by leveraging our skills and networks in our past and current jobs, some which may soon be phased out, to prepare for our jobs in the future.Dr. Nancy Onyango shares some of her arsenals to overcome internal and external barriers to success. A strong support system, emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and continuous self-improvement are among the gems she shares as must-haves for creating lasting change and reinvention. She explains that reinvention must have a clearly defined purpose, be driven by authenticity, pursue holistic growth, and celebrating little milestones along the way. In a world where being a black woman made her stand out, Dr. Onyango struggled with standing out and even tried to be invisible before she learned to embrace her identity as an African woman. By being her authentic self, she began to see her identity and background not as an impediment to her success, but as a strength and thus begun to claim opportunities, including her current job at the International Finance Corporation. Reinvention shouldn't depend on someone else changing, be about becoming someone else, be isolating, or dwell on the past. Life is a great equalizer, so do not apologize for your past, privileged or underprivileged. Instead, focus on how your actions today define your future success.
Kumekucha is a program to help people process conflict and trauma, and to craft new narratives for themselves. It’s running at the community level in coastal Kenya and Nairobi, for people affected by police brutality, by gang violence, and a whole range of adverse personal circumstances. In this episode we hear from two of the people involved. Onyango is an accomplished poet and story-teller, as you’ll hear very quickly, and has been very open about trauma in his own life. Having grown up in a violent home with an abusive father, men have always made Onyango curious and it is his aim to get other men curious about who they are to help advance research for better policies in the understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights. I'm passionate about this work out of personal experiences that affected my childhood and adulthood, that compelled me to want to understand masculinity in depth that I could share with African men and the world. I've always wanted to understand why they are who they are and these projects are making me help other men get their answers even as I continue to understand masculinity better. *In This Episode* * Mara's website ( https://docmara.com/ ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
