You've heard Chris and Elizabeth Cantwell on past episodes solo but recently, I was thrilled to be joined by this dynamic duo together for a hilarious & thoughtful conversation about one of their favorite movie stars. The co-creator and showrunner of one of my favorite television series Halt and Catch Fire (which he joined me to discuss in season 2), Chris Cantwell is an incredibly talented & prolific writer working on the TV projects Devil in Silver & Max Headroom, & also writing such comics as Star Trek: Defiant, Hellcat, Briar, Namor, Obi-Wan, Iron Man, Dr. Doom, & Regarding the Matter of Oswald's Body. His brilliant wife Elizabeth Cantwell is a poet, teacher, & writer-editor at Bright Wall/Dark Room whose essays on movies & men are always must-reads. Everyone says that their spouse is their best friend but for these two, it's legit! In this wildly funny, rapid-fire banter & tangent-filled celebration of Kurt Russell, we investigate the many eras & sides of the actor in the films SILKWOOD, OVERBOARD, THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES, & TOMBSTONE. The perfect listen for a relaxing summer afternoon & our most hilarious installment since our Adrian McKinty conversation on EXCALIBUR & LORD OF THE RINGS released earlier this season, this episode is sure to make you laugh. Writer Christopher Cantwell joins Dan and Matt to talk about his new BOOM Studios series "Regarding the Matter of Oswald's Body" as well as his upcoming "Angel" series.
This week on Watch With Jen, we have a very special guest and the man behind one of my favorite shows in recent memory. The TV writer, director, producer, showrunner, and co-creator of Halt and Catch Fire, which, along with The Americans, Succession, and Better Call Saul, is easily one of the best series of the 2010s, Christopher Cantwell is here to tell us all about the cult favorite AMC show that you can watch in its entirety right now on Netflix. (And you should totally do that and then come right back to listen to the podcast!)In addition to his TV work, which also includes co-executive producing Lodge 49 and Paper Girls, Chris has been very active as of late in the world of comic books, where he is currently writing Marvel's monthly Iron Man series, as well as his own original titles in collaboration with some truly fantastic artists and imprints such as Vault Comics' The Blue Flame, Regarding the Matter of Oswald's Body from Boom Studios, She Could Fly, Volume 3 from Berger Books and Dark Horse. You can find the latest issues of these titles on comic book store shelves throughout the month.Running the length of a feature film, in this epic episode (which serves up some details about the critical favorite that have never before been revealed), Cantwell shares the funny and fascinating behind-the-scenes saga of Halt and Catch Fire from its initial idea to its eventual series run on AMC. Here you'll hear about the casting process including the way that the actors informed their characters, as well as the decision to constantly shift the show's setting and power dynamics each season, along with production stories, Halt's pitch-perfect use of music, and so much more.As a fan of the series from the very beginning and someone who greatly enjoyed chatting with Chris's brilliant wife Elizabeth about horror movies earlier in the year as well, this conversation was a true honor and a pleasure and I'm thrilled to share the story of Halt and Catch Fire with all of you all.Originally Posted on Patreon (11/16/21) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/58774714Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive
*Bugs Bunny in a suit holding a flintlock pistol meme* Lord forgive me, we're going back to the old Comics Podcast. Which means the first 15 minutes are all devoted to the latest Taylor Swift release Red (Taylor's Version). And then we talked about anime. What the hell It also happened to be a good week for comics, with everything from the debut of Jeff Lemire's Robin & Batman to the launch of a new series about what *really* happened in Dallas on November 22nd of 1963 called Regarding the Matter of Oswald's Body. And everything in between, like the end of everyone's favorite YA lesbian comic Mamo.

(Pause) Now, this was initially announced as a 10-issue series. Did you always have more stories in the tank if it were to get renewed, or did you expand your original plans when you got confirmation of more issues? You recently mentioned on Twitter that you're drawn to writing characters who give us "a unique window unto humanity, people — why we are the way that we are." What is it about the Swamp Thing - and Levi Kamei, in particular - that lends itself to telling those kinds of stories?Themes of familial duty and colonialism have been an especially strong component of the last few issues. Was that part of your original conception of the series, or is that something that has evolved as the book has continued?Mike Perkins and Mike Spicer have been creating some really incredible imagery, particularly when it comes to the delineation of the flashbacks in recent issues. Meanwhile, Aditya Bidikar has made Swampy's voice feel like it's rumbling right off the page. What has that collaboration process been like with all three?Levi's brother Jacob has been teased from the start and makes an appearance in the latest issue, what makes their brotherhood so important to the narrative itself? While it was unclear what generated this plant-fueled apocalypse in Future State, Levi's reunion with Jacob suggests that Hedera's corrosive influence on the Green may be leading to this potential outcome. Is this an off base theory?!We're obviously thrilled to hear that this story will be continuing. Anything you want to tease/any foreboding words of warning for the reader about what's ahead? (Maybe: Might we see a return to the world of Future State: Swamp Thing?)

I'd love to start first with the recently announced, Regarding the Matter of Oswald's Body #1, can you tell us a little bit about this new series and how long has this been in the works?Okay, we're admittedly conspiracy theory junkies. Is it safe to say you enjoy getting lost down those kinds of rabbit holes? What is the research process like for this series? With Regarding the Matter of Oswald, She Could Fly: Fight or Flight on the way in October, and two Marvel titles ongoing atm, it's fair to say this is the most comics writing you've done at one time. I was curious now that you're a year out or so from Dr. Doom, how does writing in the comics format compare to writing for television? At the same time, it feels like you're just getting started, are there any bucket list titles you'd like to work on?There's a certain cosmic entity that shows up in Iron Man #11 (Living Tribunal but don't say to avoid spoilers), how rad was it to write such a huge character, and was he always in the cards to use in the story arc? With The United States of Captain America, what was the new Captain America creation process like? Did you have a hand in curating the creators who would make these Cap's Steve Rogers meets on the road? US of Captain America has a very “road movie” vibe to the pacing and overall tone. What are some of your favorite road movies, and did you throw any on while cracking this story? The Blue Flame is incredibly impactful in how juxtaposes the cosmic superhero story and smaller real-world story. How did scripting of this series shake out and was it always these two concurrent stories going at once? With Blue Flame, did any series inform how you wrote the cosmic scenes, like Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers? The look of the cosmic scenes in this series are so memorable. What's the collaboration process been like with Adam Gorham, Kurt Michael Russell, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhau?This series has an original soundtrack written by your friend Aaron Fischer (who one of the many Caps has been named after)! How did that come about?Substack has taken over the comics news airwaves, what are your thoughts on the platform? What comics are you reading right now?Off Topic Top Shelf: Baseball cards
