Today we're delighted to welcome Surrey County Cricket CEO Steve Elworthy to the show, our first venture into one of the toughest businesses in sport. Surrey is a historic institution in a historic sport, part of a club set up integral to the development of all cricket, including the much loved short form franchise tournaments that dominate today. But well documented, the clubs are struggling big time. Surrey, as you'll hear, is not one of them. By far the best team chasing a 4th consecutive championship, a key piece of infrastructure generating tens of millions a year, a perfect location in London, the business of this county team will surprise you I'm sure. But this format is in need of support and innovation. How can we grow the game of cricket and protect the clubs and format that may be out of fashion at the moment, but without which much of cricket wouldn't exist? This is the business of cricket away from the shining lights and big music. On today's show we discuss: The Business of Surrey: What are the key business drivers of Surrey? From sponsorships to media to ticketing and events. Why is it so important to have a multi-purpose venue capable of generating revenue away from cricket? What is the balance of value between County Championship and short form matches like The Hundred or T20 Blast? Some years revenue can be £45m, others £65m. Why is it hard to create consistency in annual turnover? The sale of Hundred franchises will pump millions of pounds into the county game. What will this be used for? Impact of Short Form Cricket: The Hundred and T20 Blast play a major role in attracting fans to club grounds. How do club benefit from these short formats even if they don't directly own a team? Why innovation in cricket is more than just reducing the number of balls bowled. A discussion around player pay: there needs to be a recognition of the opportunities players receive and provide competitive offers to attract the best talent. With the Mumbai Indians owners buying into the Oval Invincibles, what will the benefits of a relationship be? Keeping County Cricket Alive: The maintenance of red ball cricket is important for more than just tradition; why the grassroots game depends on long form cricket. Are the counties marketing their core product well enough? Surrey get over 50,000 fans in for a season; how can that be replicated in locations where teams get only 6 or 7,000? How can county teams modernise to attract the young fan and shake the perception that this is a format of the past? A huge thanks to our partner: Orreco https://www.orreco.com/
We start by looking back at the finals weekend in Cricket's Hundred. London Spirit won the Women's title, whilst Oval Invincibles became the first men's team to retain their crown after beating Southern Brave- who's Eliminator game on Saturday was the first to be decided by a "Super 5". With the US Tennis Open fast approaching, players geared up with the Cincinnati Open. Anya Sabalenka won the women's final for her first title since January, whilst Jannik Sinner became the youngest winner of the men's title since Andy Murray in 2008. We also have updates from Rugby League's "Magic Weekend", the final stage of the Women's Tour de France, and the Scottish Women's Golf Open. It may feel like only 5 minutes since the end of last season's Premier League, but we are back on the merry go round again as this season kicked off at the weekend. We are joined by football expert Billy Carr to run the rule over the possible winners and losers, as well as asking if anyone can challenge Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot. Billy also talks about the blog he has started for the international weekends, with the first instalment being an excellent summary at the end of Gareth Southgate's reign at the Euros. As recently as three years ago Spencer Johnson was working as a greenskeeper in Australia, supplementing his income as he recovered from a nightmare spell with injuries. Doctors had doubts over whether he would even be able to run again. Fast forward to the present day and he has just been called up for Australia's T20 matches against South Africa, with a place at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup still a possibility should a compatriot sustain an injury. He joins Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Sunil Gupta to share his story and hopes for the future. Having played in the inaugural Major League Cricket series in America, could a stint in the Indian Premier League be on the cards? The team react to England men's Test captain Ben Stokes' decision to end his one-day international retirement and play for the reigning champions at the World Cup later this year. We also discuss the impact of his return on Harry Brook, who has been left out of the England squad for their matches against New Zealand as a result of Stokes' inclusion. Plus, we learn about the man with the highest first-class batting average in cricket history. Norman Callaway played one match for New South Wales in 1915 and scored 207 runs, but he went to fight in World War I shortly after and died in battle at the age of 21. At just 24, Australian cricketer Peter Hatzoglou already has a cricketing CV to envy. The legspinner is one of the most exciting young players in the game, is a Big Bash winner, and has also had stints in the UK playing for Oval Invincibles and Glamorgan… However, his journey to the top is more unusual than most and not that long ago a career in cricket was not a reality for him. In fact, Peter took a break from the game in 2016 to focus on his exams and he had been trying to carve out a career in finance. Post-exams he returned to cricket, but just to play for his local village team Sunshine Heights and as recent as 2019 he was playing in the Cheshire 4th division. He was even working for KPMG as late as April last year and a professional cricketing career wasn't really on his radar. That all changed rapidly though and just a year after playing in the Cheshire 4th division, Peter was making his BBL debut for Melbourne Renegades and receiving praise from cricketing royalty such as the late, great Shane Warne. A year after that and he won the competition with the Perth Scorchers and he's now a well-renowned figure in Australian cricket. It's a remarkable rise from village cricket to BBL champion in the space of five years. It was great to speak to Peter and hear about his incredible story and all the lessons he's learned along the way - such as the importance of persistence, resilience and adaptability to change. He also speaks about the wisdom he received from Shane Warne who convinced Peter to come over to the UK and play some club cricket - which ultimately was the catalyst for him getting a Hundred contract with Oval Invincibles. There's so much to learn from Peter's story and we loved chatting to him. We hope you get as much out of the episode as we did.

A very special show for you this week folks. Well, they are all special but this one particularly so. She didn't wear her medal but Jo Gardener has won The Hundred at Lord's with Oval Invincibles. This week she was back in Sunriser's colours at Chelmsford for the opening round of the Charlotte Edwards Cup. Yes, that's the same Charlotte Edwards Annie has dismissed. Delighted to have Jo joined Dan, Annie & Sam to talk us through the CEC and CC action. Fair to say there were plenty more runs. Victories for Somerset and Durham, a lot of high-score draws and some, well, love for county cricket.

To start the new year, we have an amazing guest. The break out star of the Hundred, Alice Capsey! Alice is only 17 years old but what she has achieved this year is remarkable. A century on her Lords debut, key wicket taker and run scorer for Oval Invincibles, winning the Hundred, PCA young player of the year and leading her team to victory in the Charlotte Edwards Cup final. These achievements doesn't come easy, especially while still at school and trying to balance that. When we spoke to Alice, she had just been named in the England A side and today is flying out to Australia. Alice is a truly incredible cricketer and has a huge future ahead of her! We also chat a bit about the changes to the Ashes schedule and the selected India squad for the World Cup in March. This season, we are going to be focusing on “The Hundred”. The Hundred is an action-packed, unmissable new 100 ball cricket competition that will put you on the edge of your seat. Everyone is welcome. It will feature world-class players and massive names from around the world. Eight brand new city-based women's and men's teams will compete over five weeks every summer (Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Super Northern Chargers, Oval Invincibles, Southern Brave, Trent Rockets and Welsh Fire. A men's squad and women's squad will be formed for each team, with the competitions running alongside each other. Each squad will be made up of 15 players with a maximum of three overseas stars. This is huge for the women's game and this is something we are really passionate about. Each week we will discuss all the games that happen, the best and worst moments! The format was invented to attract younger and more diverse crowds to watch cricket, with the expectation that the shorter format will mean each match lasts around two-and-a-half hours. The BBC will show free-to-air broadcasts of the competition, while all of the women's matches and some of the men's matches will be available to stream for free on Sky Sports' YouTube channel. The tournament will give equal weight to both men's and women's sides, with almost all the matches taking place as back-to-back double-headers at the same venue on the same day. One ticket will give access to both the men's and women's games, while men and women will share the same prize money. Today, we are speaking to "Birmingham Pheonix" player Eve Jones and "Manchester Originals" player Georgie Boyce. We also are going to discuss the first match of the tournament: Oval Invincibles v Manchester Originals on the 21st July
Join Glenn and Will as they discuss The Hundred's inaugural game and England's thrilling T20I series against Pakistan! Will attended The Hundred's opener, a nail-biting win for Oval Invincibles, so he gives us a fascinating insight into how the evening unfolded. Is Glenn, a consistent critic of the tournament, starting to be sold on its merits? England edged past Pakistan in the three match T20I series with a spectacular final over win on Tuesday night: we examine who were the stand-out performers for both teams and whether Pakistan have a chance of winning the upcoming World Cup. Finally, Will discusses India's strange knack of playing multiple international sides in different continents and Glenn reminds everyone that the Royal London One Day Cup is underway today. On this week's Stumped, Alison Mitchell, Charu Sharma and Jim Maxwell are joined by Oval Invincibles and England T20 bowler Tash Farrant. Farrant featured in the inaugural match of The Hundred, as the competition finally got underway a year later than originally planned. We discuss the new format, how well it worked and how it's helping towards gender equality in the sport. And we hear from the 11-year-old boy who's been given a new lease of cricketing life - all thanks to a special set of glasses. Ahead of the first ever game of The Hundred between the Manchester Originals and the Oval Invincibles, Ed and Charlie preview the Women's Hundred through the lens of some pre-season awards. We discuss some contenders for MVP, Leading Run Scorer, Breakout Star and discuss who we think might win the whole thing come August 21st.
Continuing our Team Preview Series, we take a look at the London based Oval Invincibles. Coached by Tom Moody, the Invincibles boast an excellent backbone of domestic talent headlined by the Curran brothers and Jason Roy. We take a look through their best team, and give our predictions on how they'll fare this summer.
Jason Roy can single-handedly destroy a bowling attack. Sam Curran is a huge hit in the IPL. Tom Curran has just taken four wickets for England. But can they all have the same effect in The Hundred? Rich, Oli and Tom are not convinced. But is Oli's prediction that Oval Invincibles will be the first team bowled out in the competition fair? This is The Hundred Club, cricket's newest fan community. A trio of South Africans are the backbone of the Oval Invincibles. But Oli, Rich and Tom worry that the rest of the squad might be out of form. Can Dane van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp and the ever-dangerous Shabnim Ismail prove us wrong? Will Mady Villiers continue her meteoric rise to the top of the game? Or could the first game of The Hundred, against Manchester Originals on 21 July, be a one-sided affair? This is The Hundred Club, cricket's new fan community.
