Welcome back to the podcast! This is our sixth and final chapter of our series on admission nutrients — qualities that can make for a healthier, more meaningful college admission process… and life. In case you missed it, we started with collaboration, with Raissa Diamante (Director of admission from Harvey-Mudd College), then I sat down with Deanna Dixon, (Dean of Admission at Smith College) to talk about leadership, then Tom met with Dysean Alexander (Assistant Director for West Coast Admission at Lafayette College) to talk about consistent engagement and Nathan Faust (Loyola Marymount University) to talk about service to others. Today we conclude the series by talking about intellectual curiosity with Hillary Dickman from Colorado College. In our conversation, Hillary and I cover a lot of ground, including:  What is intellectual curiosity in the context of the college admission process? Where does intellectual curiosity show up in a student's application? Why is it important in the admissions process at Colorado College and how does their approach to identifying intellectual curiosity differs from other liberal arts colleges? What is Colorado College's latest supplemental essay prompt? Advice for both students and parents as they navigate this process And more!  Hillary Dickman is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Speech Communication from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She began her career in higher education teaching public speaking, interpersonal communication, and intercultural communication at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Since 2021, she's been part of the admission team at Colorado College, where she's worked on scholarship programs, the counselor advisory board, and now focuses on print and email marketing. She's also navigated the college admission process as a parent — her older child is a recent graduate of Wellesley College, and her younger one is a student at Colorado College. I hope you enjoy this conversation. I certainly did.     Play-by-Play: 3:09 – What do college admission counselors do during the summer?  4:55 – What are some of the roles that Hillary plays at Colorado College?  8:56 – What makes Colorado College a unique school? 10:39 – What is intellectual curiosity in the context of the college admission process? 17:43 – Where does intellectual curiosity show up in a student's application? 22:29 – What are some examples of intellectual curiosity from over the years?  32:29 – What do students or parents misunderstand about intellectual curiosity? 40:01 – Why is intellectual curiosity important at Colorado College?  48:22 – What is Colorado College's latest supplemental essay prompt? 57:10 – What if the thing I'm curious about has nothing to do with my major? 1:00:18 – What advice does Hillary give to students for writing their personal statement? 1:04:03 – How long does Hillary spend reading an essay and the application as a whole? 1:09:54 – How does Hillary recommend students get started with the writing process? 1:13:58 – What are Hillary's thoughts on using ChatGPT in the application process? 1:18:16 – What is demonstrated interest and why is it important to Colorado College?  1:24:00 – What does Hillary hope that students and parents will keep in mind throughout this process?    Resources: College Partnerships with CEG Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: Flow, the secret to happiness (TED) CEG Podcast Episode 506: Demonstrated Interest: What Is it, Why Is it Important, and How Do You Show it? with Dean of Enrollment Christine Bowman What is Demonstrated Interest? Juggling university life, work commitments, and social activities seems like an impossible task for many law students. However, Aaron Lee argues that with the right strategies, law students can effectively manage their studies without compromising other important aspects of their lives. In this episode of The Protégé Podcast, host Grace Robbie speaks with Aaron Lee, a fourth-year commerce and law student at the University of NSW and a paralegal in personal injury law, about how his interest in problem solving and overcoming challenges inspired his pursuit of a legal career, his personal experience with burnout and how it has fuelled his passion for promoting a balanced lifestyle among law students, how burnout begins long before entering the legal profession but also during university, and the impact it can have on law students early in their careers. Lee also shares the strategies he has personally implemented to manage and prevent burnout, reveals that he divides his day into three distinct mini-days to create a more balanced lifestyle, explains what this breakdown looks like in a practical sense, emphasises why it is crucial for law students to prioritise a healthy, balanced lifestyle, explores the challenges that law students face in achieving this balance, discusses whether universities should take a more active role in promoting wellbeing among their students, and addresses the common misconception that prioritising other aspects of life will negatively impact academic performance.

"Be sure that wherever our lot is cast we may and must aim at the perfect life." Written over 400 years ago, Introduction to the Devout Life is still one of the most popular books for those pursuing holiness. St. Francis de Sales explains how to turn that desire for sanctity into resolutions that yield grace-filled results. Themes include: Pursuing a devout life whole-heartedly Incorporating prayer and sacraments into a busy schedule Growing in virtue Battling wisely against temptation Making spiritual progress through daily, monthly, and yearly exercises Whether you are just beginning your spiritual journey or are more advanced in the spiritual life, you'll be able to apply this timeless wisdom immediately. Let St. Francis de Sales illumine the path to holiness and strengthen your desire to walk that road with the Lord. St. Francis de Sales (1567–1622) was the Bishop of Geneva and a renowned spiritual director. Preaching during the Counter-Reformation, he is estimated to have converted 70,000 Calvinists in his lifetime. He was a fervent proponent of the universal call to holiness and spent much of his time guiding lay people on the road to sanctity. A well-balanced, healthy diet is one that consists of a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, and proteins. I've heard it said that your plate should look like a rainbow of colors. If you're getting too much vitamin C you can develop kidney stones. Too much vitamin A can cause muscle aches and dizziness. And too much red meat can raise the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. So, it's crucial to a healthy body that we provide it with variety. Much like the body of Christ we aren't meant to look and act like every other member of the church. In the Bible, 1st Peter chapter 4 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.” So, go be the unique, beautiful, wonderfully created human God intended you to be.

“What is the difference between Feminist, Ethical and Female-Friendly Porn? In an industry traditionally dominated by men as directors and viewers, porn has evolved to begin to include women – and transfolk – as a creators of porn and as an audience. Whether it be for profit of increasing sales to an untapped market and/ or for the passion of including those whose desires and sexualities have been left out, the options in porn have significantly changed. Many existing studios have set up a new arm of their business to cater to this market and other companies have emerged to specifically target this group of consumers. With some similarities and differences in markets and goals, they all define themselves differently. Female-Friendly Porn: Also known as “couples porn” or “romance porn”, this style targets mainly straight women to watch alone or with a partner. The films are generally a little softer than mainstream porn, with fewer facials (men ejaculating on women's faces) and anal scenes, more kissing and more sensuality. Many films have a romantic element. They are generally heterosexual and the performers are usually white, thin and young and follow gender stereotypes. In the big studios, the performers are the same ones used on the mainstream sides of the industry. Sometimes the directors are women. Some of these female-friendly films are also labeled lesbian. These are also softer in terms of style of sex, using the same performers following stereotypes of lesbian looks (feminine) and behaviour. Since the advent of Fifty Shades of Grey, the themes have begun to include some kink, but gender lines are still generally the same. They tend to pay more attention to detail in the filming and include more female pleasure than the mainstream options. Ethical Porn: Discussion of ethical porn is on the rise, although few companies themselves are using this branding per se. The ethical standards that they espouse are generally that performers are paid a fair wage with fair labour practices, given a choice about the kinds of sex that they have and with whom, and what kinds of safer sex supplies that they wish to use. Some employ a revenue-sharing model between producer and performers. Ethical porn concerns itself mainly with the working conditions of the performers-ensuring fair labour practices so that the viewer can be assured that there is no trafficking, pressure to perform or lack of consent on set. Feminist porn: Feminist porn takes ethical porn and female-friendly porn one step further. It includes the ethics of fair labour practices and working conditions, respect for performers, and offering choices of kinds of sex that they wish to have. It strives to appeal to women and trans folk of all varieties as well as men, who also often appreciate the alternative option. In addition, feminist porn concerns itself also with expanding the boundaries of representation in film: more diversity of bodies, sexes and gender expressions, desires and sexual acts. Rather than espousing the same old stereotypes and scenes, especially of women and marginalized communities, it reflects many more types of people and pleasure in its films. It strives to portray all of the performers having power in their pleasure, even if that power is to choose to give it away. In essence, feminist porn strives to appeal to those left out by the mainstream as well as mainstream viewers, create positive business practices with its performers and reflect the diversity of desires and pleasures experienced in the population in general.” -https://www.feministpornawards.com/what-is-feminist-porn/difference-feminist-ethical-female-friendly-porn/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

“What Is Ethical Porn? Ethical porn is focused on fair wages for performers and crew, respectful treatment of performers (always respecting boundaries, stopping if they need to, etc.), as well as a safe, private set. Ethical porn studios also tend to be conscious about marketing, meaning they avoid harmful tropes and stereotypes about performers, and are always sex-positive and inclusive. Here are five ways ethical porn differs from traditional, mainstream porn. 1. You Pay for It, So the People Making It Can Earn Fair Wages “More often than not, you'll find ethical porn is always behind a paywall, because the people who bring you pleasure deserve to be paid fairly,” Rowntree says, adding that ethical studios know that it costs money to ensure casts and crews are compensated for their labor. 2. Performers Have Creative Agency on Set On sites dedicated to ethical porn, like Sssh.com, MakeLoveNotPorn and Bellesa, ethical porn films are typically character-driven stories during which “sex scenes actually help to move the story forward,” Rowntree explains. Additionally, performers have creative agency and input about their characters, making for a more authentic, genuine experience for the performers and consumers of the content. And, of course, enthusiastic consent is paramount. 3. Performers Are Often Real-Life Couples or Content Partners Who Choose to Work Together Speaking of authentic, genuine experiences, Rowntree says that, unlike traditional porn can feel awkward when the performers are clearly not interested in each other, Sssh.com likes to bring real-life partners together on camera, or allow performers to choose the scene partners they want to work with. “We find that this practice also helps to encourage open communication and respect, as performers readily share their ‘dos and don'ts' for each scene before ever stepping foot on set,” she says. “Moreover, even if ‘faking it' works in most Hollywood rom-coms, connection and chemistry simply cannot be ‘faked' during actual live sex.” 4. The Sex Itself Isn't Formulaic or Stereotypically Porn-y Compared to traditional porn, ethical porn often feels more natural and real. Think: no campy, stereotypical porn tropes (“Oops, I can't believe my friend just burst through the bedroom door unannounced!”). Ethical porn, on the other hand, is focused on mutual pleasure, passion and chemistry. Rowntree says there's no problem if you do like formulaic porn, but, “as an ethical studio, we are more about capturing those nuanced moments of pleasure and togetherness as the sex naturally unfolds.” 5. The Pleasure You're Seeing Is Real and Relatable “Whether the sex is ‘vanilla' or more on the kinky spectrum, ethical porn scenes are always created from enthusiastic consent, transparency, chemistry and connection,” Rowntree says. In practice that means the sex you're seeing in ethical porn is believable, relatable, doesn't typically involve the usual cliches and emphasizes female pleasure as much as male pleasure. She adds, “ethical porn showcases pleasure in a way that is not just aspirational, but actually attainable.” -https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/ethical-porn-just-might-best-010000432.html --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

“The benefits of ethical porn for women While ethical porn isn't just for women, it's often called “feminist porn” because it addresses the abuse, inequity, and inequality that run rampant on traditional porn sets — issues most likely to harm female sex workers. But this so-called women's porn isn't just good for performers. Ethical porn is a healthy (and fun!) option for consumers of all genders. Here are some of the key benefits. 1. Leads to increased sexual satisfaction Ethical porn places the genuine pleasure of every participant at its center, showcasing a wide range of sexual preferences and experiences. And with a wider range of stories and performers, it can inform and enhance your understanding of your own desires and boundaries. 2. Promotes authentic sexual pleasure In contrast to the often-fake depiction of female pleasure in traditional porn, ethical porn is all about displaying authentic, consensual sexual activities. Watching real orgasms is more enjoyable for female viewers, and it also helps educate male viewers, showing them what genuine pleasure looks like and what they can do to make it happen. 3. Appeals to all kinds of viewers People of every gender and sexuality have diverse tastes and preferences. Ethical porn caters to a broader audience by presenting a wide variety of scenes and scenarios, offering an avenue for viewers to safely explore and express their sexuality without fear of judgment or stigma. 4. Promotes inclusion, diversity, and body positivity Ethical porn breaks away from the conventional body standards and scenarios prevalent in mainstream adult content. It showcases the beauty of all body types, races, and sexual orientations, allowing everyone to see representations that resonate with their own identities and experiences. 5. Promotes a healthy sex life Engagement with ethical porn can show you how to start real-life dialogue about personal desires, boundaries, and safe sex. Consuming this type of content, either alone or with a partner, helps you gain a deeper understanding of sexual inclinations and communicate needs more effectively in relationships.” -https://www.tryquinn.com/blog/ethical-porn-benefits. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

As we dedicate ourselves to prioritizing our time, we quickly see where the things that bring us happiness and value. We see where what brings us value. As we reflect, you accept the offers I extended to you here today, and I gave you some ways to prioritize your time and what that might look like; there's a theme: remember to keep it simple. It doesn't have to be big or expensive. What matters is what you are doing and who you're doing it with, be dedicated, loyal, and fully present. By doing this, you will see what is truly valuable in our lives. Our time and money should not be spent doing anything with people who don't matter, things that don't bring us value, and things that won't bring us and those with us joy. It's time to wake up, smell the roses, and engage with yourself. Often as parents, we find ourselves busy as heck. Between school, our jobs, extracurricular activities, chores, and managing everything that comes with the home, it's nearly 9/10 pm before we even begin to settle down the day. When we do, we are tired, we can feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and like a whole day slipped through our fingers. Where did the day go? Do you think back at the end of your day about how you missed out in one way or another when it came to your kids, partner, friends, and work and that you just missed the mark? Your mind may be in other places. Did you know I have been staking a MAJOR WIN and got my FIRST children's Book Published? Also, now you can enjoy my new book, A Baseball Game with Dad! The story's moral is to take the time to see your wins, celebrate them, and when you fail or fall short, forgive yourself and be patient. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and you will become the best version of yourself after a while. Trust me, I'm still working towards that version of me, I'm getting closer, but it's a lifelong path I'm on, and so are you. Remember you have the support; you have the people there for you, use them rely on them, and start eliminating the excuses one by one and slowly to get to the end goal or whatever the excuses are keeping you from; it'll be more than worth it when you get through it all and end up on the other side of it all.
