In 2017, the billionaire businessman Sanjeev Gupta rescued the Whyalla steelworks from administration, becoming known as the “saviour of steel”. There was hope in this small town, 400 kilometres north of Adelaide, that steelmaking would continue and the thousands of people who rely on the steelworks for their livelihoods would get a reprieve. But now, the 60-year-old steelworks has been losing $1 million a day, and if it is forced to close – which looks increasingly likely – the town will be hit for six. Recently, investigative journalist and former host of the ABC’s Media Watch Paul Barry visited Whyalla, to find out how the town can be saved and what a transition to green steel might look like. There is so much goodness in the album, that we have them in the studio to walk us through a selection of songs about this state and this city, which has been named the Coolest Place In Australia by the Wall Street Journal. Buy Back in ADL on Bandcamp. Fergus, you've been on the Adelaide Show before, and you have 100% South Australian bona fides, having been born in Whyalla and grown up in Clare. Plus, you are married to one of our longest term listeners, Andrea Ferguson. I picture Johnny Cash walking along a railway line in the country and picking out a tune like, I Walk The Line. When did you first write a song based on a location in South Australia? Dr D. In the early days of our podcast, you had to be born and bred in SA to get a gong, but having moved here from the UK after your frequent visits gradually hardwired SA into your DNA, you are warmly welcomed. You've performed on five continents including legendary venues in London and Chicago. Is there a tangible, physical difference between the venues in those places compared to venues in South Australia OR if they feel more significant, is that due to the aura of those cities? It took me 4 or 5 songs on my first listen to fight through the echoes of cultural cringe. I've spoken about this with Peter Goers about how I don't bat an eyelid when a song talks about Baton Rouge or New York or Chicago or London, but when it mentions anywhere in Australia, let alone South Australia, it feels tacky or too familiar. I don't think it's actually cultural cringe because I'm very proud of our country and our townships. I think it might more closely be linked to the saying that a profit is never recognised or respected in their homeland. Let's get going with the title track, Back in ADL. BACK IN ADL (17:35) When you are writing about places, how do you stop them from sounding like TV commercials or slogans or jingles for property developments? Henley Square is one of those songs that comes very close to sounding like this, but so, too, does the title track, Back in ADL. The line take me to your deli counter and let me taste your ways because there's lots of innuendo there especially with smallgoods ... or is that just me? In our early days, we had the Adelaide Visa Council because people made lazy jokes about Adelaide being boring and Paul Barry from Media Watch was very cynical about Adelaide earning the Coolest City label from the Wall Street Journal. Let's listen to his cowardly backhander from a recent episode of Media Bites. I thought we were past these lazy jokes. Your thoughts? The second track on the album, Gulf of St. Vincent, contains the O word. Is that pedantic to query that? Is that just Total Adelaide? Talking of Vincent, I think St Vincent Street is a great song that needs to be included, all about about a particular female police officer. VINCENT STREET (36:00) Talking of streets, let's address the myth of naming conventions and the belief you cannot cross the king. In episode 28 of The Adelaide Show, around the 45-minute mark, Keith Conlon highlights that it was popularly believed that the reason none of our city streets continue either side of King William Street is because you CANNOT CROSS THE KING. PLAY KEITH CONLON INSERT Have you caught much flak about that song? CROSS OUT THE KING (47:50) When you get into history, I note that This Is Our Beef has an early Redgum feel. Beef Rebellion story THIS IS OUR BEEF (58:05) The thing about writing songs about places we know and live it, is that we all have stories that intersect with your songs. Do people call out during the show or want to talk to you afterwards? FOUR TREES (MIRNU WIRRA) (1:08:01) If I were at your show, I'd be chewing your ear about Johnnie's Gone Away because I worked at John Martins in the 80s in the West Lakes store in boyswear. And my maternal grandman, Lillian Field, she worked in the basement of the city store in the late 1930s when a young man from an engineering company turned up to fix the lifts. He soon became my grandpa. Why did you guys write about John Martins, which we're reflecting on the day after the 2023 Christmas Pageant which was a gift to SA from John Martins for most of its 131 years. JOHNNIE'S GONE AWAY (1:17:00) Finally, your Fringe show has won awards, and gotten great reviews. What is next? Has your song, Letter To Paul Kelly, caught Paul's attention? LETTER TO PAUL KELLY (1:28:45) 00:00:00 Musical Pilgrimage This whole episode was an extended Musical Pilgrimage segment.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Paul Barry SSAS Specialist gives us an insight into the world of pensions for small to medium sized business owners. The Small Self Administered Scheme pension (SSAS) is a massive business tool, to help scale your business, save huge amounts of tax and extrapolate you wealth in the long term.Key takeaways:- SSAS pension can be set up for anyone who has a trading business- A SSAS puts the Entreprenuer in control of their own pension funds- You can make contributions to the pension and avoid paying Corp tax on those contributions- You can lend back up to 50% of SSAS funds to help the business grow.- Trading businesses can contruibute up to £500k of profits in one year (not the usual £60k pension contribution limit for an indivdual.- The SSAS can own commercial property and can rent it back to the business. The business gets a tax deduction for the rent and the SSAS doesnt pay tax on the receipt.- SSAS is a trust so protected from inheritance tax.- A whole host of investment can be made from the SSAS as long as it meets HMRC criteria and its something that can be valued. If you want to find out more you can speak to Paul or contact him:Paul Barry - The SSAS Consultant Reference: "REWD Group" for special offers on your SSASThis is not Financial AdviceLike, Subscribe and Share for weekly podcasts! Our story on Starting Real Estate Wealth Development and going for 0-200 properties in two and a half years: https://rewdtraining.co.uk/essentials...Following Real Property Training, for more tips on property investing:You tube:   @therealwealthpodcastInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/therealwealthpodcast/ Join our Real Property Community on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1224232164973501Our Book: Fast track to Property Millions: Fast-Track to Property Millions: Amazon.co.uk: Duncan, Laurie, Robertson, Alex, Tracey, Conar: 9781739854379: Your Host: Alex Robertson is a self-made property investor and businessman. Legendary singer P.P. Arnold returns with the sensational festive tune ‘It Won't Be Christmas Without You', an instant classic for the holiday season produced by Mark Taylor & Patrick Mascall for Metrophonic Production Ltd.Living legend and queen of soul Pat ‘P.P.' Arnold needs no introduction, having accumulated a lifetime of show-stopping performances in the studio and on stage, whether through her successful solo work with '60s hits like ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest' & ‘Angel Of The Morning' and her critically acclaimed 2019 solo album ‘The New Adventures Of…' or as the go-to voice for rock and soul legends like Ike & Tina Turner, Small Faces, Stevie Wonder, Roger Waters and Nick Drake amongst others.Following the release this year of her best-selling autobiography ‘Soul Survivor', the next chapter in P.P. Arnold's story is her glorious first-time Christmas single ‘It Won't Be Christmas Without You'. Produced by Mark Taylor & Patrick Mascall from Metrophonic Productions Ltd. who also share writing credits alongside Paul Barry, the opportunity to record the track was a joy for Arnold after the isolation of lockdown. “I wasn't thinking ‘Christmas' originally I just wanted to be in the studio recording and being able to do that. I went to meet Mark and Patrick and they were so cool, and I hadn't been in a studio since 2019 because of Covid. It was nice being in the studio with really good producers who know what they wanted.”Once Arnold heard the track she knew she could bring her own distinctive vocal sound to the festive party, “I loved the track when they played it to me! I thought this is cool, it has that whole soulful sixties vibe and everything that a Christmas record should have!”Taking its cue from the fabled sound of Phil Spector's ‘A Christmas Gift For You…' album, ‘It Won't Be Christmas Without You' is a stunning ‘wall of sound' production that's set to become an instant seasonal classic. Opening with a flourish of sleigh bells before giving way to a sky-scraping euphoric chorus, it's shot through with a lyrical melancholy that immediately puts it amongst the pantheon of great Xmas songs. Throw in some saxophone that recalls E-Street band legend Clarence Clemons and you have a timeless classic to light up people's hearts and minds during the holiday season. It also proves that time hasn't diminished the power and resonance of P.P. Arnold's voice, which soars and touches the soul with the same power that it did years ago when she first burst onto the global music scene. “It stretched me because I'm singing like I'm seventeen again in that key, I gotta be working to sing in that key to keep all that stuff going, so I'm giving thanks and praise that I can still do that. When they played the track back in the studio I was like ‘oh yeah!'”Arnold's skill with her vocal delivery is something which many other vocalists would find hard to match, a talent fine-tuned over decades of professional singing work, but true to her loving spirit she understands the significance of connecting with the hearts and minds of people at one of the most important times of the year “I started stretching out but not too much, it's Christmas, everybody wants to be able to sing it! It's not just about me, I sang it for everybody.”“Mariah please, give somebody else a break!” jokes Arnold, but this festive chapter in the continuing adventures of a soul survivor proves that P.P. Arnold continues to hold her own alongside her contemporaries, and reminds us all to cherish her beautiful talents as she forges her own unique path into a bright future. Hosted on Acast. They don't wanna be noticed as bad."On the Mayer Principle and being the most advanced, yet acceptable, says Paul: "As long as you know the audience's why, your customer's why, and as long as they're aligned, you've got the acceptable part, which means that people look at you and identify, yep, you absolutely are authorities in your field." Connect with Paul through the link below: LinkedIn -  https://www.linkedin.com/in/dreamingforaliving/Website - https://www.dreamingforaliving.com/ Learn more about Chris in the link below: LinkedIn (Chris) - https://www.linkedin.com/in/decker-christopher/ Also, you can join our community by checking out @salescast.community. After more than 20 years of teaching acting for film and TV around the world, Paul Barry finds this consistently to be proven true. In order to regularly and believably portray authentic and engaging human beings, actors must subvert their habitual impulses and dive into the unfamiliar and sometimes frightening territory of playing the opposite of what would seem to be 'intuitive'. Having taught acting for film and TV for over 20 years to almost five thousand clients from around the world, including many recognisable actors working on screen in Australia, the UK and the US, Paul's time is now dedicated to his online acting training. Helps actors avoid the 'starving artist' fate by teaching online income generation skills to the next generation of artists via his coaching program, 'Dreaming for a Living'. https://www.dreamingforaliving.com/home

Paul Barry joins me on episode 64. Paul is our resident expert on William Clarke, and is currently writing a biography about him.Bill (as he was known to his friends) was born in a suburb of Los Angeles, and starting going to the blues clubs in the south of the city, age 17. Bill met his great inspiration, George ‘Harmonica' Smith, in 1977, with George showing Bill how to play that big old chromatic harmonica . Bill released his first album in 1978, with other albums following where he always featured original material. He then signed for Alligator records in 1990, releasing his superb album: Blowin' Like Hell. The four albums he released with Alligator gave Bill the chance to fully shape the sound he had been developing, influenced by jazz players and including a horn section. Sadly Bill passed away at age 45, but he has still left us with an essential body of work for both diatonic and chromatic blues harmonica.Links:Paul Barry's band website:https://www.paulbarryblues.com/LA newspaper interview with Bill 1991:https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1991-05-16-vl-2586-story.htmlTom Ellis: William Clarke Memorial article in Blues Access magazine:http://www.bluesaccess.com/No_28/Clarke.htmlBob Corritore: William Clarke Remembered photo gallery:https://bobcorritore.com/photos/william-clarke-remembered/Interview with his wife: Jeanette Clarke-Lodovicihttps://www.allaboutjazz.com/william-clarke-now-that-you-are-gone-william-clarke-by-david-kingHarpTranscripts: for transcription of Blowin' The Family Jewels: (under 'G harmonica')http://www.harptranscripts.co.uk/diatonic.htmlVideos:Hitting Heavy album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsgucIjixtIWilliam Clarke playing Lollipop Mama:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrXrsmUWAGMWilliam Clarke playing Pawnshop Bound:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8IJBQ5u1ZsWilliam Clarke playing on Bro Matt's Bluez Shift:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YIv2Bb9f6oPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsor:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com  or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS

https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=137510 A great benefit of therapy is that you begin to see many more options in your life. I would typically come into a session with a problem where I only saw one or two ways out and my therapist would help me see many possibilities. I would think I had to respond this way or that way to an obnoxious person and my therapist would help me see I might be best served by not responding at all. Similarly, a great benefit of reading history is that you learn new ways of understanding the present. There's a right-wing trope these days that we live in unprecedented times of restrictions on our freedom, but when you read history, you soon see that almost everything that is supposedly unprecedented about our current cancel culture, Big Tech collusion and Corona Virus restrictions have happened before and that there are certain circumstances that are likely to give rise to this repression. It's not an aberration, for example, for journalists to cheer on censorship of their competitors. The primary reason I did not react with rage to Covid restrictions like most right-wing pundits did is that I read a book by Paul Barry about the 1918 Spanish Flu, The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History. I don't know how anyone could learn about how that respiratory illness devastated the world a century ago and still believe that individual freedom in the face of such a challenge was the important thing. After reading that Paul Barry book, I concluded that a collective response might make more sense. The biggest difference between me and other dissident right livestreamers is that I read more books and therefore I'm less susceptible to the hysteria that comes from watching videos that reinforce your prejudices. I know people who got taken in by crackpot Ivor Cummins who propounded that if you had a previous corona virus, like 80% of the population, you would be immune to this one, and that deaths by Covid-19 cost but one year of life. I am a structuralist. It's the structure of reality and the shifting nature of power that shapes how individuals act. I see individual freedom as circumscribed by genetics, context and events. For example, our policies towards China won't be profoundly affected by who is in charge of America and China. Personalities don't matter as much as structure for international relations. The structure of our great power rivalry dictates that America pivots to Asia and away from Europe to confront the rise of China. Tru-Tech makes EDM investment based on trust Tru-Tech Precision Engineering is a company that has established a reputation for quality and reliability within the high-tech industry sectors it supports. It bases its business model on the expertise of its staff and the manufacturing equipment it relies upon. Based in a 5,000sq/ft facility in Dundalk, in Ireland, Tru-Tech was originally established in 1996 to provide subcontract centreless grinding services to customers in the medical device sector. It has built an enviable reputation as a leading manufacturer of high precision mould inserts for the medical moulding industry. As customer requirements have changed, the company has invested in additional manufacturing technologies to meet these needs. Managing Director, Joe Murphy says “That’s not to say that centreless grinding is no longer a key part of our business,” around half of our turnover comes from the high precision centreless and form grinding services we provide to various industry sectors.” Tru-Tech has equipped itself to meet and often exceed the growing demands of its customer base that now includes medical and healthcare, automotive, electronics, computing and telecoms businesses. Alongside the CNC milling and turning machines on the shopfloor, a CNC EDM die sinking machine supports the company’s ability to provide precision single and multiple mould tool cavities. Joe Murphy says: “We used an ONA die sinker for many years, and Warwick Machine Tools’ sales and service engineer, Paul Barry, has always been on hand to look after the machine for us. He was aware we were having issues with an old wire cut machine that was unreliable and expensive to repair, so during a visit to our facility, he mentioned the new Excetek V400G CNC wire cut machine. On paper the cost-to-performance ratio looked unbeatable.” Providing comparative performance levels to the existing Swiss and Japanese wire EDM machines, the new Excetek V400G offers a major cost-saving against any equivalent size machine tool, and the price includes training and installation. The new V-4-hundred-G is capable of accommodating larger workpieces up to 750 x 550 x 215 mm weighing up to 500 kg with a compact overall footprint. All the standard range of wire EDM machines from Excetek feature a C-frame structure and the new V400G features a honeycomb frame structure for rigidity and thermal stability. The AC servo motor driven C1 class ball screws are cryogenically treated to minimise the thermal effects of the machine’s ambient operational environment, with high accuracy linear scales fitted for accurate positional feedback. The machine also features Excetek’s latest corrosion-free electro discharge generator technology that improves cutting performance. While the cutting speed of every wire EDM machine is limited by the laws of physics and set by the thickness of the raw material being cut, it is a manufacturer’s corner control that defines its machine accuracy. Excetek’s software ensures the motion control and spark generator work together for the optimum power ramping and compensation dwell on corners, avoiding wire twist and reducing corner ‘washout’. Wire diameters from 0.15 to 0.3mm can be used and for extended operation, a 50 kg jumbo wire feeder can also be fitted. Joe Murphy says: “The machine is very keenly priced, and we were sending around 10,000 Euros of wire work out every month and, although the quality was good, we had very little control over the lead times. Now we have the ability to carry out the work in-house we can control both the costs and the timescales.” As well as the ability to produce very accurate and detailed copper electrode for the die sinking machine, the wire EDM has provided a further benefit with its ability to cut form grinding dressing blades from Syndite. A composite material that combines the hardness, abrasion resistance and thermal conductivity of diamond with the toughness of tungsten carbide, Syndite blades could take a couple of hours to produce on a digital Optidress wheel forming dresser. Using the Excetek V400G, Tru-Tech can now generate the blades in less than 30 minutes.

00:00:39 A decade ago, the Great Southern Reef stretched for 8,000km off the coast of Western Australia. Now, a long-term study shows how decades of ocean warming combined with a marine heatwave has devastated the kelp forest. We caught up with Dr Scott Bennett from the Spanish National Research Council, one of the primary investigators on the study. 00:20:04 A new study has found that capuchin monkeys in Brazil have been using stones as tools to prepare their cashew feasts for more than 700 years. 00:24:49 Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have made a major discovery that could determine whether a patient has a bacterial infection or a viral infection by through a simple blood test. 00:31:26 The European Space Agency has announced an ambitious plan to catch a derelict satellite in a net, and burn it up in Earth's atmosphere.   Dr. Scott Bennett is a Marie Curie Fellow at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and Research Associate in Marine Ecology at Curtin University.   This episode contains traces of Paul Barry on Media Watch investigating The Australian's Great Barrier Reef coverage.

A Canadian teenager may have found a lost Mayan city. Or, it might just be a marijuana plantation. Either way, he deserves credit for coming up with a hypothesis and testing it - with help from the Canadian Space Agency! There's a parasite that's turning Alaskan king crabs into zombies. The parasite castrates the males, takes over their bodies and makes them raise its offspring. But the good news is the crab's legs are still edible! A new study finds a link between folate and autism. But it's not so simple - and there's no reason pregnant women should stop taking folate supplements if their doctor advises. We respond to some feedback from Michelle Franklin about biological controls in Australia. Not all attempts to control pests with other organisms have been failures, some have been quite successful.   This episode contains traces of Paul Barry on Media Watch.
