In 2017, the billionaire businessman Sanjeev Gupta rescued the Whyalla steelworks from administration, becoming known as the “saviour of steel”. There was hope in this small town, 400 kilometres north of Adelaide, that steelmaking would continue and the thousands of people who rely on the steelworks for their livelihoods would get a reprieve. But now, the 60-year-old steelworks has been losing $1 million a day, and if it is forced to close – which looks increasingly likely – the town will be hit for six. Recently, investigative journalist and former host of the ABC’s Media Watch Paul Barry visited Whyalla, to find out how the town can be saved and what a transition to green steel might look like. Paul Barry joins me again on episode 105, for another look at the life and career of the great William Clarke.Paul has now released his biography: Blowin' Like Hell: The William Clarke Story, writing it from insights he gained from Bill's wife Jeanette, and Bill's children, and the musicians who played with him, as well as many others.Bill dedicated his life from the age of sixteen to become the bluesman he dreamed he could be, and he worked extremely hard at it. He honed his craft from woodshedding at home, attending the blues clubs of LA, becoming the protege of George Smith, and pushing himself hard to create his unique voice both vocally and especially on the diatonic and chromatic harmonica. All this despite his personal demons, to become one of the leading players of his generation. Legendary singer P.P. Arnold returns with the sensational festive tune ‘It Won't Be Christmas Without You', an instant classic for the holiday season produced by Mark Taylor & Patrick Mascall for Metrophonic Production Ltd.Living legend and queen of soul Pat ‘P.P.' Arnold needs no introduction, having accumulated a lifetime of show-stopping performances in the studio and on stage, whether through her successful solo work with '60s hits like ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest' & ‘Angel Of The Morning' and her critically acclaimed 2019 solo album ‘The New Adventures Of…' or as the go-to voice for rock and soul legends like Ike & Tina Turner, Small Faces, Stevie Wonder, Roger Waters and Nick Drake amongst others.Following the release this year of her best-selling autobiography ‘Soul Survivor', the next chapter in P.P. Arnold's story is her glorious first-time Christmas single ‘It Won't Be Christmas Without You'. Produced by Mark Taylor & Patrick Mascall from Metrophonic Productions Ltd. who also share writing credits alongside Paul Barry, the opportunity to record the track was a joy for Arnold after the isolation of lockdown. “I wasn't thinking ‘Christmas' originally I just wanted to be in the studio recording and being able to do that. I went to meet Mark and Patrick and they were so cool, and I hadn't been in a studio since 2019 because of Covid. It was nice being in the studio with really good producers who know what they wanted.”Once Arnold heard the track she knew she could bring her own distinctive vocal sound to the festive party, “I loved the track when they played it to me! I thought this is cool, it has that whole soulful sixties vibe and everything that a Christmas record should have!”Taking its cue from the fabled sound of Phil Spector's ‘A Christmas Gift For You…' album, ‘It Won't Be Christmas Without You' is a stunning ‘wall of sound' production that's set to become an instant seasonal classic. Opening with a flourish of sleigh bells before giving way to a sky-scraping euphoric chorus, it's shot through with a lyrical melancholy that immediately puts it amongst the pantheon of great Xmas songs. Throw in some saxophone that recalls E-Street band legend Clarence Clemons and you have a timeless classic to light up people's hearts and minds during the holiday season. It also proves that time hasn't diminished the power and resonance of P.P. Arnold's voice, which soars and touches the soul with the same power that it did years ago when she first burst onto the global music scene. “It stretched me because I'm singing like I'm seventeen again in that key, I gotta be working to sing in that key to keep all that stuff going, so I'm giving thanks and praise that I can still do that. When they played the track back in the studio I was like ‘oh yeah!'”Arnold's skill with her vocal delivery is something which many other vocalists would find hard to match, a talent fine-tuned over decades of professional singing work, but true to her loving spirit she understands the significance of connecting with the hearts and minds of people at one of the most important times of the year “I started stretching out but not too much, it's Christmas, everybody wants to be able to sing it! It's not just about me, I sang it for everybody.”“Mariah please, give somebody else a break!” jokes Arnold, but this festive chapter in the continuing adventures of a soul survivor proves that P.P. Arnold continues to hold her own alongside her contemporaries, and reminds us all to cherish her beautiful talents as she forges her own unique path into a bright future. Hosted on Acast. Do something bold so that people will remember you. In this episode of the Content-Led Growth podcast, our host speaks with Paul Barry, TEDx Speaker and Director of Dreaming for a Living. He digs into why blending in may be acceptable, but it will not help you stand out from the crowd that does the exact same thing. Paul shares that your underlying why is what makes you different and how it helps you advance ahead of your competition. HIGHLIGHTS A career in acting taught Paul to be bold to stand outSwim across the current, not with it, or end up with everyone elseYour WHY is your differentiatorLaunching the Big Idea Incubator to change the world in significant ways QUOTES Why you cannot change the world without standing out, says Paul: "When I transitioned into working with coaches and consultants, the biggest problem I still see every single day is coaches, consultants, speakers, who, for all of their great ideas, I'm just trying to not stand out. They're trying to not get noticed. They don't wanna be noticed as bad."On the Mayer Principle and being the most advanced, yet acceptable, says Paul: "As long as you know the audience's why, your customer's why, and as long as they're aligned, you've got the acceptable part, which means that people look at you and identify, yep, you absolutely are authorities in your field." On this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast, my special guest is the multi-award-winning British songwriter and musician, Paul Barry. Paul formed his first band The Questions whilst at high school in Edinburgh in the summer of 1977 and a few years later, the band were supporting The Jam and signing to Paul Weller's Respond Record Label before hitting the road with their own shows and as part of the live Respond and Style Council shows. Whist the band didn't enjoy Top 40 success - they did sell tens of thousands of records and were hugely popular with live audiences too. Paul co-wrote (with John Robinson) The House That Jack Built which was a Top 10 single for Tracie Young. Over the past 30 years as a songwriter, Paul has had huge success with smash-hit singles for Cher, Enrique Iglesias and James Bay. He's also written for and with the likes of Celine Dion, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie, Mica Paris, Ricky Martin and James Morrison (and exclusive reveal of a Paul Weller link in our chat!). After more than 20 years of teaching acting for film and TV around the world, Paul Barry finds this consistently to be proven true. In order to regularly and believably portray authentic and engaging human beings, actors must subvert their habitual impulses and dive into the unfamiliar and sometimes frightening territory of playing the opposite of what would seem to be 'intuitive'. Having taught acting for film and TV for over 20 years to almost five thousand clients from around the world, including many recognisable actors working on screen in Australia, the UK and the US, Paul's time is now dedicated to his online acting training. Helps actors avoid the 'starving artist' fate by teaching online income generation skills to the next generation of artists via his coaching program, 'Dreaming for a Living'. https://www.dreamingforaliving.com/home
Taking on the might of the Murdoch family in court is no small feat, but the small Australian commentary website, Crikey, is doing just that. Lachlan Murdoch is suing the platform for defamation, after it alleged links between his family and the January 6 Capitol riot in the US, which the Murdochs deny. Today, the host of Media Watch on ABC TV, Paul Barry, on why it will be a test case for Australia's defamation laws you'll want a front row seat for. Featured: Paul Barry, host, Media Watch, ABC TV

Paul Barry joins me on episode 64. Paul is our resident expert on William Clarke, and is currently writing a biography about him.Bill (as he was known to his friends) was born in a suburb of Los Angeles, and starting going to the blues clubs in the south of the city, age 17. Bill met his great inspiration, George ‘Harmonica' Smith, in 1977, with George showing Bill how to play that big old chromatic harmonica . Bill released his first album in 1978, with other albums following where he always featured original material. He then signed for Alligator records in 1990, releasing his superb album: Blowin' Like Hell. The four albums he released with Alligator gave Bill the chance to fully shape the sound he had been developing, influenced by jazz players and including a horn section. Sadly Bill passed away at age 45, but he has still left us with an essential body of work for both diatonic and chromatic blues harmonica.Links:Paul Barry's band website:https://www.paulbarryblues.com/LA newspaper interview with Bill 1991:https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1991-05-16-vl-2586-story.htmlTom Ellis: William Clarke Memorial article in Blues Access magazine:http://www.bluesaccess.com/No_28/Clarke.htmlBob Corritore: William Clarke Remembered photo gallery:https://bobcorritore.com/photos/william-clarke-remembered/Interview with his wife: Jeanette Clarke-Lodovicihttps://www.allaboutjazz.com/william-clarke-now-that-you-are-gone-william-clarke-by-david-kingHarpTranscripts: for transcription of Blowin' The Family Jewels: (under 'G harmonica')http://www.harptranscripts.co.uk/diatonic.htmlVideos:Hitting Heavy album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsgucIjixtIWilliam Clarke playing Lollipop Mama:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrXrsmUWAGMWilliam Clarke playing Pawnshop Bound:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8IJBQ5u1ZsWilliam Clarke playing on Bro Matt's Bluez Shift:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YIv2Bb9f6oPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsor:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS
