Can joint Israeli-Palestinian health programs help build trust where politics have failed? According to a new paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the health care field can play a crucial role in building bridges between communities in conflict. Written by two Jewish Israeli and two Palestinian doctors during a period of temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the paper reviews 16 joint initiatives, highlighting in particular two programs: Road to Recovery and Physicians for Human Rights Israel. The authors also present recommendations on how cross-national health care programs can play a role in post-war peacebuilding. One of the paper's authors, Avner Halperin, a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School's Middle East Initiative, spoke to KAN reporter Naomi Segal. Welcome to this episode of What Matters Today, where we delve into the complexities of the current crisis between Israel and Lebanon. As tensions escalate, Lebanon faces profound challenges to its stability, governance, and ability to provide essential services. In this episode, we explore how the ongoing conflict is reshaping the Lebanese state, examining the government's response, the factors influencing its decisions, and the critical role of public opinion—especially concerning Hezbollah's involvement. We'll also consider how Lebanon's position at the heart of regional tensions might lead to shifts in alliances and potentially transformative changes within its own political landscape. To help unpack these pressing issues, we are joined by Christiana Parreira, Assistant Professor of International Relations and Political Science here at the Geneva Graduate Institute. Christiana joined the Institute in 2022, following her role as a Post-doctoral Associate in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University and a Pre-Doctoral Associate with the Middle East Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School.

Aaron Rock-Singer is a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School's Middle East Initiative. He has published two fantastic books, “Practicing Islam: Egypt's Islamic Revival” and “In the Shade of the Sunna: Salafi Piety in the Twentieth-Century Middle East”. Aaron is truly brilliant, connecting both the macro and the micro. By examining structural shifts in education and urbanisation as well as Islamic print media, he shows how modernisation triggered counter-mobilisation. We discuss: How did colonialism change religiosity and religious practices in Egypt? Why were post-independence leaders relatively secular? What was the Islamic revival? What was new? Did the 1970s economic downturn raise support Islamists? Why was there a global religious revival in the 1970s? Why was female behaviour so central to religious revival? Would Egypt's Islamic revival have occurred in the absence of Saudi funding and migration?

Barak Sella is an educator, activist, writer, researcher, and one of the leading Israeli experts on US-Israel relations and World Jewry. Born in Texas, Barak moved to Israel in 1994, exactly one year before the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli Prime Minister who was most dedicated to making peace with the Palestinians. This event deeply affected him and became an inseparable part of his socialization in Israeli society.  Ten years later, as a soldier in the Israeli Defense Forces, Barak was part of the disengagement from Gaza and in the unit that evacuated the very last Jewish settlers from the region. We talk about all of this in this episode and how those formative events have impacted the way Barak understands his family's past, the world presently, and his hopes for the future. Throughout his career, Barak has focused on building bridges within communities in Israel and worldwide. He was formerly the Executive Director of the Reut Institute, one of Israel's foremost think tanks on strategy and leadership. During his years at the institute, Barak worked with leading actors in the Israeli government and with NGOs from Israel and the US on various issues: Israel delegitimization, antisemitism, Jewish Peoplehood, and Israel-US relations. Barak recently graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School for Government and is currently a Middle East Initiative fellow at the Harvard Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Israel opens more aid routes and delivery access to Gaza, a day after U.S. President Joe Biden's call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatening a shift in U.S. policy towards Israel unless it reduced harm to civilians in Gaza. Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Edward P. Djerejian, Senior Fellow for the Harvard Kennedy Belford Center's Middle East Initiative gives his take on what he believes needs to happen. The deaths of seven World Central Kitchen staffers have shaken the humanitarian community as groups now weigh the safety risks of their own workers. Janti Soeripto, President and CEO of Save the Children who just returned from Gaza talks about the serious impacts even a short pause in aid would mean for millions of starving civilians. Tensions heat up as Iran accuses Israel of carrying out an airstrike in Syria that killed some of its top military commanders and threatens to retaliate.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Ed Djerejian says Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin once told him “There is no military solution to this conflict, only a political one.” Rabin was assassinated a few years later and today bullets are flying, bombs are falling, and 1,200 Israelis are dead after the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7 and nearly 30,000 Gazans have been killed in the Israeli response. Yet Djerejain still believes that a breakthrough is possible even in the current moment, as horrible as it is. Djerejian, a senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Relations, says the crisis has shaken the regional status quo to the point where—if the United States pursues diplomacy that includes principled pragmatism, coalition-building, and good old- fashioned backbone—a breakthrough may finally be possible. But in a recent paper he argues that any breakthrough will have to be built around a two-state solution, which he says is the only path to peace and stability not only in Israel and Palestine, but the wider Middle East. Djerejian's career as a diplomat spanned eight U.S. presidential administrations beginning with John F. Kennedy's, and he also served as U.S. Ambassador to Syria and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Ed Djerejian's Policy Recommendations:The U.S. should stake out a strong, principled position on a two-state solution based on land for peace. The U.S. should build a broad multinational coalition around its diplomacy in the region.U.S. leaders and diplomats should make American national security interests clear, both globally and in the region.Ambassador (Ret.) Edward P. Djerejian is a residential Senior Fellow at the Middle East Initiative in Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Relations. Djerejian joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1962 and his 32-year diplomatic career spanned eight presidential administrations from John F. Kennedy to William J. Clinton. Djerejian is a leading expert on national security, foreign policy, public diplomacy, and the complex political, security, economic, religious, and ethnic issues of the broader Middle East. He is the author of “Danger and Opportunity: An American Ambassador's Journey Through the Middle East.” He recently completed a nearly 30-year tenure as founding director of Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. Ambassador Djerejian graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in 1960. Lebanon has been called many different things: a gem of the Middle East, a failed state, a geopolitical Gordian knot (or nightmare). Its financial system has recently collapsed, people cannot find basic services, and residents are still recovering from the massive Beirut explosion of 2020. It may be a complex country to wrap your mind around, but our four scholars tell you everything you need to know about daily life in Lebanon: how are people getting by, who is in control, the geopolitics of the region, and the history behind it.Lana Salman shares a detailed account of daily life in Lebanon, where people must wait hours in line to obtain goods and services. The civil uprising really began back in October 2019, and it was different from others, explains Carmen Geha, because it was so widespread. Citizen protests have continued since then, and have increased in the aftermath of the Beirut explosion in 2020 for which no one has taken responsibility, they note. After decades of witnessing corruption at the highest levels, the Lebanese may be at a tipping point. Geha and Salman share examples of citizens creating their own organizations to address humanitarian needs, as an alternative to relying on the default sectarian sponsored hand-outs.To understand the levers of control, Melani Cammett explains the power-sharing structure of the government, and she and Geha emphasize that the current leaders are the unpunished perpetrators of war crimes (“warlords”) from the chaotic, multiparty Lebanese civil war (1975–1990).Nate George offers important background on the steps leading up to the current financial crisis and describes the geopolitical crossroads Lebanon occupies today in the Middle East. He also explains why Western countries are no longer eager to support Lebanon during the current fiscal crisis.Lebanon indeed has a complex history and remains an important player in the Middle East. With a mix of anecdote and history, our conversation is a sobering primer on the many layers and realities of Lebanon.Host:Erin Goodman, Director, Weatherhead Scholars Program.Guests:Melani Cammett, Director, Weatherhead Center for International Affairs; Clarence Dillon Professor of International Affairs, Department of Government, Harvard University; Professor in the Department of Global Health and Population, Harvard T.H. On today's podcast, you will not only hear Joe Biden speak to his complicity in nation-wide voter fraud, you will also see and hear Sidney Powell, former federal prosecutor, now a Trump campaign lawyer, share out on Maria Bartiromo's Sunday show that there is massive evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election and other irregularities that continue to show-up during the on-going investigations. Indeed, the software on voting machines was manipulated by both domestic and foreign actors in support of former Vice President Biden. “We're getting ready to overturn election results in multiple states,” Powell said. She points outs in the interview that there is enough evidence of election fraud to initiate a widespread criminal investigation by the F.B.I. and C.I.A. Powell further states: “I don't make comments without having the evidence to back it up,” saying that election software switched “millions of votes” from Trump to Democratic nominee Joe Biden. How is the former Obama/Biden administration linked to a blast of 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate in Beirut, Lebanon? Not only does Hizballah control Lebanon, but it has a history of storing tons of ammonium nitrate here in this hemisphere, in Europe, as well as in the Middle East. And who supplies the financial resources for acts of terror? Consider the tremendous aid the last Democrat-run administration provided to nations like Iran that sponsor terrorist groups such as Hizballah. Prior to the Trump administration, the Obama/Biden team gave $1.7 billion in cash to Iran and additional aid during the course of the Obama/Biden years in the White House. Likewise, since Hizballah or the Party of God's formation, it has remained supplied and supported by Iran and is well organized in America as it is in other nations... And noteworthy are the number of Hizballah sleeper cells across this country from California to New York. Question: So is Hizballah storing ammonium nitrate here? During this election season, another important question remains: What would a Biden presidency mean to the safety of the American people? In light of the proliferation of terrorism that occurred during the Obama/Biden years, particularly the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power in Egypt, to the Islamic State, IS/ISIS/ISIL/Daesh, control in Syria and Iraq, to utter chaos in Libya, which still remains under the authority of rival militant/terror organizations, what would another administration of Biden Democrats do to further devastate the security of the U.S., European countries, Israel, and beyond? Dear Listeners and Readers: Due to the telephone calls and texts from friends, former colleagues, and associates of my late, beloved Philip, I thought it best to provide an update at this time. As the Sheriff's Department has reported previously, they reached out to their law enforcement partners in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to assist in analyzing documents, phone records, a lap top, and other items that were recovered from the location of what appeared to be the scene of Philip's execution as well as from his temporary residence in Plymouth, California. After talking to my contact at the Amador County Sheriff's office, he believes that this week or the week after, they may possibly be getting the final reports from FBI offices here on the West Coast and back East on numerous pieces of evidence the FBI packed up and took to their labs for forensic DNA examinations. Meanwhile, I had specifically asked the lead investigator on this case from the sheriff's office to read the book that Philip had written called See Something Say Nothing as well as the manuscript of his new book. Noteworthy is the fact that in the 2nd book, Philip identities those involved in sabotaging America's national security within the Obama administration - names were to be named. I believe if the Amador County Sheriff's Department has or will review the first book and then the manuscript of the second book ... they may have a much better idea on who may have murdered Philip! My prayer request is this: PRAY that the TRUTH of what really happened to Philip be revealed in the days ahead.... That the Amador County Sheriff's Department has looked at or will look at everything and everyone they need to in order to make the right determination on how to move forward and conclude the investigation into the death of Philip Bruce Haney! Again, I want to thank you for your continued prayers. This has been a very sad and difficult time for me personally to get through and it feels as though the pressure and tension are mounting.... so, thank you again for your prayers for a thorough, honest determination by the the Sheriff's Department in Amador County, California. Under international law is terrorism ever legal? Terrorists target non-combatants as well as police, armed and unarmed, as well as a sovereign nation's armed forces. However, it is not legal in the U.S. or Israel! RABBI URI PILICHOWSKI, author and scholar speaks to Muslim Arabs, Palestinians, who are claiming that according to international law .... it is our right to use all the means of struggle. "The political wing of the terror organization the PLO, Fatah, has said: We'll use “armed struggle” to fight Israel. And top Palestinian officials repeat such statements as: We'll use “resistance in all its forms” against Israel, “the enemy.” "Resistance" refers to terrorism. See: https://palwatch.org/page/18010 On another related topic: Rabbi Uri notes that in light of the tremendous spike in violent anti-Semitic attacks here in the United States, there has been a 120% rise in the application of Jewish-Americans looking to leave America for Israel. Following her recent primary victory, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, (AOC), who wholly supports anti-Semitic groups like Black Lives Matter, is leading the charge against Israel's possible application of sovereignty over small communities within Judea and Samaria - the West Bank - where Jewish families have populated the area since Biblical times. AOC wrote a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warning that any move by Israel to extend its sovereignty over areas that under international law are controlled by Israel would jeopardize U.S. military aid to the Jewish state - if Democrat majorities take over both houses of Congress and Joe Biden becomes president. Recently BLM rioters rampaged through Jewish neighborhoods of Los Angeles, CA, reportedly shouting “F___Jews”, and spray painting “F___Israel” and “Free Palestine” on the walls of the Congregation Beth Israel and at least four other synagogues. The original BLM Platform also supports the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions movement. BLM, formed in 2013 by three trained Marxists, had by 2015 sent BLM representatives to the Middle East to make common cause with Palestinians in Gaza, Judea and Samaria. Dear Listeners and Readers: Find out how and why the global Islamic movement together with the global Black Lives Matter movement is focused on chaos and revolution. The #DefundPolice cause celebre has broader implications than what is being reported in the news media. Hear intelligence analyst and independent consultant, CLARE LOPEZ, Founder / President Lopez Liberty LLC. Democrats, tied to CAIR, like Ilhan Omar from Somalia, a country known for radical Islamic groups, now a Congresswoman from Minneapolis, recently tweeted that we must "DISBAND" the police. Congresswoman Omar is also a sympathizer of the Islamic State, IS/ISIS/ISIL/Daesh - a brutal terrorist organization which is now urging non-Muslims to take up weapons against their governments on social media platforms.... Another Democrat tied to CAIR, Michigan Democrat Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has also tweeted out her support for disbanding the police. She wrote: "When we say #DefundPolice, what we mean is people are dying ... Detroit spent $294 million on police last year, and $9 million on health. This is systemic oppression in numbers." And yet, Tlaib supports Hizballah, the PLO and other terrorist groups which buther innocents to death.... Should there be consequences for these Leftists comments by Democrats contributing to lawlessness and destruction of the Rule of Law? Moreover, also tied to Democrats is the BLM-Los Angeles head Melina Abdullah and her daughter Amara Abdullah - co-founder of the BLM Youth Vanguard. They have long records of anti-Semitism and continue to support the Nation of Islam and its leader Louis Farrakhan. It seems Abdullah is responsible for the pogrom in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles this year. Councilman Paul Koretz stated: “The attack on our community last night was vicious and criminal. Fairfax is the center of the oldest Jewish community in Los Angeles.” “As we watched the fires and looting, what didn't get covered were the anti-Semitic hate crimes and incidents.” Numerous synagogues came under attack and religious schools! Jihad Watch has reported: "Melina Abdullah, the lead organizer of Black Lives Matter in LA and a professor of Pan-African Studies at Cal State, had been very clear about her motive for bringing her hateful campaign to the area." Abdullah has stated: “We've been very deliberate in saying that the violence and pain and hurt that's experienced on a daily basis by black folks at the hands of a repressive system should also be visited upon, to a degree, to those who think that they can just retreat to white affluence....” [See: https://www.jihadwatch.org/2020/06/a-farrakhan-supporter-led-the-la-black-lives-matter-rally-that-became-a-pogrom ] Learn so much more.... After Middle East Scholar, RAYMOND IBRAHIM was DISINVITED to speak at the U.S. Army War College, learn what sort of heavy push-back it took to finally overcome Muslim Brotherhood groups like CAIR, the Council on American Islamic Relations, to be re-invited back to address Ibrahim's latest book: Sword and Scimitar: Fourteen Centuries of War Between Islam and the West. This important read addresses threats to America's national security! And consider, this victory is tremendous in light of Philip B. Haney's experience as a former DHS intelligence official and an expert on Islamic terrorism. He wrote in his own book, See Something, Say Nothing, (page 5), that the Obama administration, i.e., the Democrats took the counter-terrorism fight against Islamists / jihadists from a "law-enforcement-based approach to national security to a "civil rights" - based policy approach" called, Countering Violent Extremism, CVE. The FBI is still implementing this CVE or "civil rights" perspective. Ask President Trump to move aggressively, in a law-enforcement approach against Islamic terrorists and their front groups. Dear Listeners and Readers: Get striking details from the Department of Justice, DOJ, Office of Inspector General's newly published report. Obama's DHS DELETED Philip's files on Islamic terrorists and their networks operating inside the United States - files meticulously placed in the database to facilitate the arrest of individuals who posed or pose a threat to American lives. Examples include intelligence information on Islamists surrounding the Fort Hood attack, the Boston Marathon attack, the Orlando Pulse Nightclub attack, the San Bernardino attack, etc., etc. See: https://oig.justice.gov/reports/2020/a20030.pdf#page=2 Note: Before Philip was found dead, he was poised to name, names in his new book, a sequel to "See Something, Say Nothing." He explains how he was targeted by Democrats within the Obama administration, some of whom remain in their same career positions and continue to work against President Trump and his team. These same Democrats from the State Department and DHS sought to destroy the intelligence information Philip had meticulously collected and had input into the DHS law enforcement database. Who are those people that are responsible for destroying the intelligence information that Philip so carefully input into the intelligence database? That intelligence information would have prevented the deaths of American lives in terrorist attacks in Orlando, Boston, and San Bernardino, California, etc. Philip was tracking over 300 individuals who were tied to Islamic terrorists and committed to jihad. As Islamic terrorists from Iran and/or Iranian proxies seek revenge against the United States, the question arises: Why did former President Obama sign into law the "Countering Iran in the Western Hemisphere Act of 2012" and then turn around and sign the Iran nuclear deal in 2013? The United States virtually bought and paid for Iran's signature on the deal by giving away $150 billion, not including the $1.3 billion in cash flown in by plane? What Obama did was treasonous. He in effect funded Iran's global network of Islamic terrorism and helped to facilitate the deaths of hundreds of Americans. Now Democrats want to blame President Trump. It is now clear that the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi embassy in Turkey was a pre-planned execution, likely ordered by people at the very top of the Saudi government. The incident has sparked an international outcry, and raises questions about the US’s relationship with the Saudis. What is the underlying nature of the US-Saudi alliance? How has Trump's strategy differed from Obama’s, and what impact might all of this have on relations with Iran and elsewhere across the Middle East? Colin Kahl was deputy assistant to President Obama and a national security advisor to Vice President Biden from 2014 to 2017. He’s now the co-director of FSI’s Center for International Security and Cooperation, and the head of its Middle East Initiative. In this discussion with Michael McFaul, Kahl outlines the unease some American diplomats feel towards our relationship with Saudi Arabia. He explains steps that President Obama took to restructure the alliance, and he argues that President Trump’s decision to double-down in Saudi Arabia has narrowed the options for responding to an increasingly fractured relationship.

Yemen has become, according to the United Nations and World Health Organization, the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Nearly 12 million people are in need of assistance and in 2017, the worst cholera outbreak in recent history affected an estimated 1 million people. The outbreak, though now controlled, and other infectious diseases combine with famine, malnutrition, and the collapse of the country’s water and sanitation sector to threaten millions, while aid access is blocked and aid workers, hospitals, and civilian areas are attacked. As the armed conflict continues and political fissures in Yemen deepen, humanitarian access and protection issues continue to pose enormous challenges. This panel was recorded during a live event at the Middle East Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Panelists discussed the complexities of addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, paying particular focus to the cholera outbreak, as well as the broader issues of sustaining humanitarian access and protection, advocating for respect for human rights, and achieving a political solution to the crisis.

Nadia Marzouki explores how the topic of Islam has become so contentious in America. Marzouki says her research showed her that controversies around Muslims living in America don't just express Islamophobia. "They betray and express a deeper discomfort and unease with an understanding of law, an understanding of rights, and an understanding of equal democracy. This is really what's at stake in the conversations among the disputes around mosques, Sharia law, and also— in a more minor way— the headscarf... or various forms of religious rituals related to the Islamic communities." As an observer from Europe, Marzouki says, "It was really surprising to see how similar all the rhetorical tropes animating anti-Muslim movements were similar in Europe and the United States. This was all the more surprising because all the sociologies of Islam in Europe and United States. You don't have the same Muslim communities. They don't come from the same ethnic backgrounds. They don't have the same socio-economic level. They don't have the same level of education. In general, they're much more educated and have a better social economic level in the U.S. Before 2001, and even more so before 2008, Islam was never such a big problem in domestic politics in the United States." "What's really completely absurd and problematic in the current situation both in Europe and in the U.S. is that we are deciding policies based on stereotypical discourse— and without any account for the empirics and the lived realities of Muslim communities." Marzouki is an Andrew Carnegie Centennial Fellow, Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, and a research fellow at Harvard's Belfer Center’s Middle East Initiative.
