I am joined by Dr Pete Watson from the University of Leeds, and Karen Ariza Carranza, journalist, founder of Tribuna Krizol - a platform to promote social change in sports and the participation of Colombian women in sports - and she's also an International Olympic Committee young leader. We're looking at the role of women's football within Colombia as an agent for change. In this episode, we cover: The Rise of Women's Football in Colombia: We look at the historical context of women's football in Colombia, and its growing significance both nationally and internationally. The Development of Women's Football in Colombia: We explore how women's football in Colombia has developed later than the men's game, with the first professional league only established in 2017. The Global Stage: We highlight the importance of international tournaments, particularly Colombia's 2015 Women's World Cup victory over France, in boosting visibility and media attention for the sport. 'Critical Visibility Moments': We analyse the role of 'critical visibility moments', where women's football gains media traction, often when the men's team underperforms or is absent from major competitions. Club Structures in Colombia: We examine how club football remains structurally weak, with a lack of investment, limited teams, and dependence on men's clubs for survival. The Role of Linda Caicedo: We discuss the growing impact of key figures like Linda Caicedo, an Afro-Colombian player who overcame cancer to become a global star, now playing for Real Madrid. Growing Media Attention: We acknowledge that while women's football in Colombia has gained more mainstream media coverage, it still faces systemic challenges, including gender inequality, inadequate funding, and inconsistent broadcasting. How Does Colombian Women's Football Compare with its Latin American Peers?: We compare Colombia's success in women's football to Argentina's struggles, positioning Colombia as the second-strongest team in South America behind Brazil. Activism is Making a Difference: We emphasise the role of grassroots activism, independent media, and journalists advocating for greater representation and support for the women's game. What Does the Future Hold?: We conclude by considering the future of Colombian women's football, noting its potential to rival Brazil, provided the necessary structural and financial support is secured from the federation and clubs.

I am joined for a third time by Dr Pete Watson from the University of Leeds to discuss the ultimate grudge match in World Cup history, certainly from one side, at least. We're discussing Argentina versus England at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 22 June 1986. It was the first time the two countries had met since the acrimonious Malvinas/Falklands Conflict four years earlier. Argentina famously won it with two of the most famous goals in history from Diego Maradona in the space of five minutes early in the second half. England almost pegged it back after John Barnes' brilliant impact off the bench, but it finished 2-1 to the South Americans. There is so much to unpack in this match, from international diplomacy to conversations about colonialism.
Just why do men of a certain age devote such space in their heart for a side who didn't make the semi-finals of the World Cup? Do they deserve the worship over 40 years on? Pete Watson returns to discuss just why this football team retains such strong resonance and affection and why the political and cultural backdrop played such a huge part. Energy and personality are the most important factors for recruiters according to Pete Watson. Today's ep is my interview w Pete, who is the founder of Mint Recruitment and Australia's longest serving Rec2Rec recruiter. We discuss:
As we approach the penultimate hurdle it is time to take a wider view of the two main protagonists at this World Cup. Dominic Hougham, author of ‘50 Great World Cup Matches…and why you should watch them', joins Martyn to discuss Italy's semi final with Bulgaria but also the tensions between free spirits and control-freak coaches and the national team's performance in an era of league domination. Pete Watson returns to look at Brazil v Sweden, the importance of the World Cup to the Brazilian nation and how they look back on this more prosaic side 30 years on. This is a public episode. No World Cup has seen as many goals on average in the last 30 years and much of that was down to the some of the fun and games in Groups C and D. Mike Gibbons joins Martyn to take stock of where the German national side was in 1994, the vitriol towards Klinsmann, the sheer entertainment provided by Nigeria, Bulgaria and Argentina and Pete Watson returns to discuss the downfall of Diego. If you're enjoying your trip back to 1994 then let us know and share with your pals. Right, it's time to get stuck into the football as Groups A and B come under the microscope. Mac Millings is back to happily reminisce about the USA's surprising performance as hosts, give the Swiss some praise and wax lyrical about Gheorghe Hagi. Pete Watson, lecturer in Latin American Studies, takes us through the dark story of Colombian football and the tragic end for Andreas Escobar. And Gary Naylor runs through Brazil's strong start and explains why Sweden were worthy of their FIFA ranking. This is a public episode. Te Whatu Ora admits there are some errors in its official figures on emergency department waiting times. Data showed a dramatic improvement in the EDs in the Northland, Southern and Taranaki regions which recorded near perfect waiting times in November and December. The health agency's spokesperson Pete Watson told Morning Report the waiting time data has been merged from 20 different districts which collected it in different ways and it is as accurate as it can be at the moment. Pete Watson says read all together, the data gives a good indication that pressure on the health system is not improving.
Now for an update from Te Whatu Ora on how hospitals in in Tairawhiti and Hawkes Bay are coping. Despite power outages and internet problems, they are operating. Hawkes Bay Hospital remains open for urgent cases, but elective surgery is cancelled. There's a week of fuel left for generators supporting Gisborne Hospital. An urgent investigation is underway at Middlemore Hospital after a patient died having been told to leave the emergency department because of long wait times. When the woman returned a few hours later due to a life-threatening emergency, she was already on the decline and died at 5pm yesterday. Just a week ago Middlemore Hospital's acting chief executive Dr Pete Watson spoke to Today FM's Wilhelmina Shrimpton, giving assurances that those in need of critical care would receive it. Health Minister Andrew Little acknowledged in a statement yesterday “The health system has been under serious pressure from years of neglect and underinvestment.” Here to tell us what he’s seeing in the system is National’s health spokesperson Dr Shane Reti.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The man who runs Middlemore Hospital says Covid-19 remains a fierce and unpredictable enemy but is quietly confident New Zealand's health system can avoid becoming overwhelmed. Middlemore Hospital chief medical officer Pete Watson concedes Middlemore suffered its share of problems early in the current outbreak but, with infection numbers growing, he believes the South Auckland hospital is now leading the way in how it handles patients. He spoke to Corin Dann.
Middlemore Hospital's chief medical officer says he would support an increased alert level in Auckland if it helps vaccination rates. The hospital has been gearing up for a surge in cases that's being predicted by health officials. Pete Watson told Morning Report moving up the alert level to buy time for more people to get vaccinated is worth considering. "I know that would be a really tough ask," he said. "But certainly, the higher the vaccination rates get, the fewer people will require hospital care and certainly intensive care, and that will save lives. "Vaccination is the key, so whatever we can do to increase it I think is really worth considering, because as we're seeing in Auckland now the numbers are building." Watson said the hospital had been seeing an increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases as the number in the community grows. There were 71 new cases of Covid-19 in the community announced on Thursday. There are 617 active cases in the community. "I think last count I had last night, we had seen six Covid cases through the emergency department, all were admitted yesterday to the hospital. So the numbers are rising," Dr Watson said. "We have now I think, 12 positive Covid cases and at Middlemore Hospital, five of those are an ICUs. The numbers are steadily increasing."

Rapid antigen tests will play an important role in the future fight against Covid-19, and it's critical the country is prepared. That's the view of a technical advisory group on testing for the virus, which released its report yesterday. Middlemore Hospital in south Auckland was the first to trial rapid antigen tests, or RATs, and its chief medical officer Pete Watson spoke to Corin Dann.

Four wards are closed at Middlemore hospital in Auckland and nearly 30 staff have been stood down after a Covid-positive patient was unknowingly admitted to a non-Covid ward on Saturday. Health Minister Andrew Little called the Covid-19 exposure a "serious hiccup" on Morning Report. Kate Weston from NZNO said that the breach was very distressing for staff and would worsen already strained nursing numbers. Middlemore Hospital chief medical officer Dr Pete Watson.

I have had the pleasure of working with Stella in 2020 and I don't think I know a more motivated or inspiring leader. In this episode she reveals: Where her ‘force' comes from - deep in her childhood How she coped in lockdown with her husband and business partner in the same house How and why she has merged her agency with Cox Purtell How she sees the future of our sector being built on collaboration and mergers of small agencies I would go as far to say this is my favourite ever RAG episode! In today's episode, alongside co-host Pete Watson, I was joined on LinkedIn live by Paul Donovan, Regional Director at Bluefin Resources - Australia's Number 1 Specialist Recruitment Agency. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and has seen 2 x economic downturns. He moved from London to Brisbane almost 10 years ago and soon found himself settled in Melbourne where he has stayed ever since. In today's episode, Paul shared his experience of joining Bluefin Resources, a Powerhouse in Sydney at the team with the task of leading an underperforming office in Victoria to a profitable place. Pauls attitude is an extremely positive one. He talks about the ‘people first' agenda in his business and how they didn't let a single employee go during the COVID pandemic. I love how despite the longest lockdown in the world, Paul managed to stay calm, positive and find humour in every situation, if you would like to reach out to Paul and ask any questions directly, he is more than happy to help. ------ Sponsors: Odro: https://bit.ly/35UrBKr Vincere: https://bit.ly/2zOL43W
In today's episode, alongside co-host Pete Watson, I was joined on LinkedIn live by Anton Roe, Director at Marshall McAdam - a boutique Recruitment Agency in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. Anton is a seasoned recruiter who left the UK for a life overseas 5 years ago. He moved to Australia in 2016 and joined the business 2 years ago to lead and scale the business with support of the founders. In today's episode, Anton shared his experience of moving to Australia and leading the business through the Pandemic. Most notably he talked about the fact that when COVID hit, he had recently relocated his son full time from the UK to Australia and was still technically living on a working visa before he could move over to a spousal visa via his Australian wife in August 2020. Ultimately this meant that had he been let go by the business as a result of the pandemic he would have had to leave the country along with his son. The stakes were high I love how relaxed and calm Anton is as a person, this has been developed further during his long leadership career. The business has survived well so far with Anton being creative about new products and services. Angela is a recent member of the Hoxo Academy and someone I worked with weekly during the extended lockdown in Melbourne. In today's episode she discussed how 2020 started off with the news of the leader of their Sydney office suffering injury in a tragic accident. The rest of the year continued to provide incredible challenges. The one stand out comment that Angela made referred to the ‘pace of life' pre and post COVID. She has learnt that we simply do not need to rush around day in and day out in order to be successful. We can in fact find more time for ourselves and families whilst maintaining our performance. An open discussion that left me feeling good about the future, if you would like to reach out to Angela and ask any questions directly, she is more than happy to help. ------ Sponsors: Odro: https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqa2dvRVhiRThadE5uLURWZHFzLWlrdzk1SlJiUXxBQ3Jtc0tud3NGdmFDWnpzTUp4R3VJZGlHNnNaM2wtN0FialJyTS02U25Wc0NiZWNtN2NET1lqUUdVX2lZQW9lWjJSZklrOTBPa0czc3JBNkdKdVIweFRRVi1uMHl1N1MxbVh3ZTlOTGsxY0t4RGs1TUtaUGNhYw%3D%3D&event=video_description&v=rJ2exNr23ek&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F35UrBKr (https://bit.ly/35UrBKr) Vincere: https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqbFNIUlF3TFJUazZ6NnRKeGs3dkFidjg2X3FwQXxBQ3Jtc0ttZkFSMUlJa3pOWEZfLWsxTDA4b2oxZ1JSWGNvci1OZUFseEtLOEVHSnNhLTNYeEJqc2NGdEc2X25TQXNfMllaazVYWG00Rm15ZGhTdUVyLXV5X1c3a1ZpYVJLSTkxRlBzeFB4clYzUE9icFc3R2lQRQ%3D%3D&event=video_description&v=rJ2exNr23ek&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F2zOL43W (https://bit.ly/2zOL43W)
In today's episode, I was joined on LinkedIn live by my Co-host Pete Watson and Paul Hallam, Partner and the Founder and Executive Director of Six Degrees Executive- a leading Australian executive recruitment business with 90 staff across offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Paul shared how after 16 years as CEO of his agency, in Feb 2019 he decided to step down from this role and handed over the helm to Suzie McInerney, previously state director in the business. He had grand plans of changing his lifestyle, investing time ON the business and other ventures he was already invested in and passionate about. However as the 12 month hand over period came to an end, the Pandemic hit! In this episode, we talked about: How Six Degree's handled the first wave of the virus The ways in which the business stayed ‘connected' and maintained it's thriving culture How Paul personally felt during the extended lockdown His vision for the future and advice to UK recruitment business owners in Lockdown #2 A fascinatingly successful leader whom I have had the pleasure of working with personally as part of the Hoxo Academy, it was a true pleasure for Pete and I to interview him. If you would like to reach out to Paul and ask any questions directly, he is more than happy to give up some time! ------ Sponsors: Odro: https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqa2dvRVhiRThadE5uLURWZHFzLWlrdzk1SlJiUXxBQ3Jtc0tud3NGdmFDWnpzTUp4R3VJZGlHNnNaM2wtN0FialJyTS02U25Wc0NiZWNtN2NET1lqUUdVX2lZQW9lWjJSZklrOTBPa0czc3JBNkdKdVIweFRRVi1uMHl1N1MxbVh3ZTlOTGsxY0t4RGs1TUtaUGNhYw%3D%3D&event=video_description&v=rJ2exNr23ek&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F35UrBKr (https://bit.ly/35UrBKr) Vincere: https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqbFNIUlF3TFJUazZ6NnRKeGs3dkFidjg2X3FwQXxBQ3Jtc0ttZkFSMUlJa3pOWEZfLWsxTDA4b2oxZ1JSWGNvci1OZUFseEtLOEVHSnNhLTNYeEJqc2NGdEc2X25TQXNfMllaazVYWG00Rm15ZGhTdUVyLXV5X1c3a1ZpYVJLSTkxRlBzeFB4clYzUE9icFc3R2lQRQ%3D%3D&event=video_description&v=rJ2exNr23ek&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F2zOL43W (https://bit.ly/2zOL43W)
In today's episode, I was joined again by Pete Watson, the founder of Mint R2R and Hoxo Media Ambassador in Australia. Another episode from our ‘human series', Pete recently shared with me that he stopped drinking alcohol in 2012 after it was fundamentally affecting his life in a negative way. In this episode, we talked about: Pete's early relationship with Alcohol How heavy drinking was encouraged in his Recruitment Career The way he felt the day after drinking The final straw that led to his sobriety What has happened since he stopped! This is SUCH an important topic as alcohol is threaded deep in our culture in western countries and even more so in the recruitment industry. So many people struggle with their relationship with alcohol and this can be even worse in lockdown! I loved hearing Pete's story, he was super brave for sharing and will be an inspiration for many I am sure. If you would like to speak to Pete about his journey in more and / or would like someone non-judgemental to talk to about your relationship with alcohol then reach out to Pete directly: https://www.linkedin.com/in/petewatsonmintrecruitment/ ------ Sponsors: Odro: https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqa2dvRVhiRThadE5uLURWZHFzLWlrdzk1SlJiUXxBQ3Jtc0tud3NGdmFDWnpzTUp4R3VJZGlHNnNaM2wtN0FialJyTS02U25Wc0NiZWNtN2NET1lqUUdVX2lZQW9lWjJSZklrOTBPa0czc3JBNkdKdVIweFRRVi1uMHl1N1MxbVh3ZTlOTGsxY0t4RGs1TUtaUGNhYw%3D%3D&event=video_description&v=rJ2exNr23ek&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F35UrBKr (https://bit.ly/35UrBKr) Vincere: https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqbFNIUlF3TFJUazZ6NnRKeGs3dkFidjg2X3FwQXxBQ3Jtc0ttZkFSMUlJa3pOWEZfLWsxTDA4b2oxZ1JSWGNvci1OZUFseEtLOEVHSnNhLTNYeEJqc2NGdEc2X25TQXNfMllaazVYWG00Rm15ZGhTdUVyLXV5X1c3a1ZpYVJLSTkxRlBzeFB4clYzUE9icFc3R2lQRQ%3D%3D&event=video_description&v=rJ2exNr23ek&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F2zOL43W (https://bit.ly/2zOL43W)
Recruitment Journeys: The Podcast Series (from Mint Recruitment)
OK, so this one is a bit weird, because I’m not the Interviewer in this episode, and I’m actually being interviewed about my own “Recruitment Journey”. Over the past year or so, a few people have suggested they’d like to know a little bit more about my own career past. Maybe they were just being polite. Maybe they’ll wish they hadn’t asked. But either way, I asked fellow Recruiter, ex-candidate, and fellow podcaster, Paul Tulip, if he’d be kind enough to step in and help me out with the podcast titled “The Rec to Rec”, in which I answer all the usual questions about how I got started in the industry, why I made the move into R-to-R, and whether I was “any good” at recruitment in my early days. Special thanks to Paul Tulip for helping out as guest interviewer. Hope you enjoy it!
