In this episode, the latest in the Writing a Novel series, I look at some opening pages of published novels, and see if we can learn anything about what makes a compelling opening. The novels are in the commercial Fantasy/historical genres. Hopefully this will help me out figuring out how to open my own novel! Here are the 3 books I talk about in this episode, with links if you'd like to buy them. Narrator David Rintoul takes on the complex investigations of odd, unusual, and often inconsequential crimes that populate Alexander McCall Smith's latest parody of a Scandi police procedural. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss how Rintoul's innate seriousness contrasts perfectly with the spate of philosophical dialogue and unending stream of comments and asides. Detective Ulf Varg, who takes himself very seriously, bandies about crimes and motives with his sidekick Blomquist and coworker Anna in the Department of Sensitive Crimes. Narrator Ali Ahn brings plenty of personality and heart to Emiko Jean's young adult rom-com about a high school senior who has discovered an incredible secret —her father is royalty. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this fun and sweet story in the spirit of THE PRINCESS DIARIES. Raised in California by her mother, Izumi Tanaka doesn't know her father's name until she discovers it accidentally, and she is shocked to learn he is the Crown Prince of Japan. When Izzy is invited to travel to Japan to meet her family, Ahn's delivery reflects her conflicted reactions to the many unfamiliar customs and expectations—and her handsome bodyguard. Strong-willed Izzy worries she'll never truly be accepted by her father's traditional family. A delightful start to a new series. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Emma Dabiri narrates her work with the same clarity, thoughtfulness, and directness with which she wrote her guide to go beyond beyond the nebulousness of “allyship” to the action of building coalitions for change. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this short but powerful work by the Irish Nigerian author, which delves into the history of racial formation and the corresponding power and legal structures, and advocates for the need to do away with these structures to build new futures. Dabiri's compelling writing, her warm and accented voice, and her smooth and well-paced narration combine to capture your attention, making for an audiobook you'll want to return to, and share. Robert Fass narrates Alexander Lobrano's satisfying audiobook with flair. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss Fass's ability to capture the longing and introspective qualities in Lobrano's coming-of-age memoir. It's a work packed with stories and insights into Lobrano's life as an American food critic in Paris, starting with his discovery of his passion for food. His idiosyncratic guide on current places to dine in Paris is inspired and fun. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. There are many pleasures to discover in this fine anthology of the past 50 years, performed by some of the most gifted narrators working today. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss the diversity and power of the collection, which includes works by Raymond Carver, Stephen King, Grace Paley, Karen Russell, Lauren Groff, and Edwidge Danticat. Some of the finest narrators working today read the stories, including Cassandra Campbell narrating Susan Sontag's powerful “The Way We Live Now,” which you can hear on the episode. Narrator Ben Sullivan's strong, clear voice and intentional pacing complement these tales of scientific misdeeds. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss Sam Kean's examination of scientists who disregarded ethics to achieve scientific glory--though hindsight shows that unethical means almost always result in faulty methodology. Listeners will be aghast at the actions of these scientists, who sound more like characters from pulp science fiction. These chronicles are important because of their impact on the present day. Narrator Ben Onwukwe brings out the humor and pathos in Mike Gayle's story of Jamaican widower Hubert Bird, who discovers friendship in unlikely places. AudioFile's Michele Cobb tells host Jo Reed about this rich listening experience, thanks to both Gayle's layered story and Onwukwe's performance. Hubert's daughter, Rose, thinks his life is full of friends and fun, but he actually lives an entirely solitary existence. When Rose announces an unexpected visit, he has to find some fake friends quickly. Hubert's adventures are hilarious and heartwarming, and Onwukwe's depiction of him makes this production shine. Listeners will root for Hubert, rejoice at his newfound friendships, and wish that they, too, could have a cuppa with this lovely man. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Zapraszamy do wysłuchania sowiego odcinka podcastu, w którym Paulina rozmawia z Rafałem Śniegockim, dyrektorem Zespołu Parków Krajobrazowych Województwa Wielkopolskiego oraz Michałem Wieciechem z Nadleśnictwa Niepołomice. Super grim dark. -A character that goes from a child to an adult over the course of a series, which can be troublesome for a series. -Not for the faint of heart, but the characters were more developed than Joe Abercrombie’s First Law characters -Scott’s Magic Yeti -Chuck was in the hunt for high fantasy that wasn’t grimdark but not epic, but more like D&D fantasy of the 80’s. -What has changed in the last 30 years? -It depends on the fantasy you read; Josh wasn’t compelled to read Priori of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon because of the prose and POV shifts. -An overload of characters from that book. -Josh also read The Shadow of What Was Lost (Licanus Trilogy) by James Islington -It was a boy going on a Hero’s Journey with two different types of magic and a bit obvious. -Josh recommends The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archives #1) by Brandon Sanderson (of course) -Working title for The Way of Kings was Writing This for Josh. -Chuck chose Web of Eyes (Buried Goddess Saga #1) by Rhett Bruno and Jamie Castle -Josh explains the indoctrination into Stormlight is much like Scientology…. -Scott did not like most of the characters, but he liked Shallan. -Scott reacted differently to The First Law trilogy than Josh. -Chuck was curious about the concept of the generic character, but there’s an appeal there. -Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time starts as a clone of JRR Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings but diverts after the first book. -Magic system fatigue. -Follow along with the Everyman™. -Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Tales series has parallels to A Song of Fire and Ice – magic. -A discussion of explaining the magic or not (hard v. soft). -Josh explains Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson -Josh then explains Stormlight magic… Anyone read some steam punk? -Josh started The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi -Scott and Chuck read some Cherie Priest Clockwork Century novels -Deadwood with Magic would be fun. -Chuck enjoyed Stephen King’s The Outsider, but Josh did not like the show. -Scott loved Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series, which is a mix of fantasy and historical fiction -Josh surprisingly enjoyed The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North - [1:03:31] Closing remarks Coffee and Concepts Writer’s Journey Storytelling *** Become a Medium today! https://keystrokemedium.com/mediums/ Don't forget to Like and Subscribe and get involved with the mayhem and shenanigans in the live chat! http://www.youtube.com/c/keystrokemedium If you have any thoughts or ideas for show topics or if you have authors you'd like to see on the show, let us know. Themen Reviews Eternal Autumn - The Werewolf Diaries | 3:39 Heaven Shall Burn - Of Truth and Sacrifice | 8:48 Anspieltipps | 27:39 Slime - Wem gehört die Angst Pentagram Me And That Man - New Man, New Songs, Same Shit, Vol. 1 Lucifer - Lucifer III | 43:35 Schiebung aktueller Releases | 31:31 Warum wieso weshalb Witschels Alltags-Anekdote | 38:21 Buch Tipp | 41:57 Peter V. Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/2JnSPBP The war is over. The enemy's won. Now it's time to fight back. For generations, the people of Jia - a land where magic has long since faded from the world, clinging on in only a few rare individuals - have been protected from the northern Egril hordes by their warrior caste, but their enemy has not been idle. They have rediscovered magic and use it to launch an overwhelming surprise attack. An invasion has begun. And in moments, the war is over. Resistance is quashed. Kings and city leaders are barricaded in their homes awaiting banishment and execution, the warriors are massacred, and a helpless people submit to the brutality of Egril rule. Jia's heroes have failed it. They are all gone. And yet... there is still hope. Soon the fate of the kingdom will fall into the hands of a schoolboy terrorist, a crippled Shulka warrior and his wheelchair bound son, a single mother desperate enough to do anything she can to protect her baby... and Tinnstra, disgraced daughter of the Shulka's greatest leader, who now lies dead by Egril hands. A brand new epic fantasy: gritty and modern featuring a unique ensemble of characters who will lead a revolution against their overlords. PERFECT FOR readers of Brent Weeks, Brandon Sanderson, and Peter V. Brett
We talk about a charity that encourages reading and creative writing, a book series announcement from Peter V. Brett, and then we review The Heart of Stone by Ben Galley!
Show notes: http://bit.ly/2hveuXR Three Week Catch-Up: Robert rewatches episodes of West Wing, flies to Hong Kong for a day to renew his 90-day-visa-exempt status in Taiwan, and discovers the difference between 1.2 billion Catholics and 900 million Protestants in Christianity. Jenny vacations to Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA, visits a women's retreat in south Washington, and catches up with a border guard friend from high school at the Canada/USA crossing. Jermaine calls out Gandhi for bad behavior, works nights on call, attends a wine glass painting class, joins a Python boot camp to learn programming, temporarily forfeits his phone at a bar to raise money for an ALS charity, and visits a lot of Halloween parties dressed as Jughead from Riverdale. Nerdy News: Disney announces the launch of its own streaming platform in 2019 Jermaine: "Hulu is awesome and does anyone actually use Amazon Prime for streaming?" Jenny: "I don't use any of the other services; Netflix is good enough for me for everything." Robert: "Netflix and Spotify are completely dependent on the kindness and goodwill of their licencors to keep licensing them material." Trailer Talk - New Mutants Jermaine: "I'm not going to go see this but it doesn't look like a bad movie. They having powers detracted for me because they're not in danger and aren't so helpless. That's what puts fear in me for horror movies. Three stars." Jenny: "It reminded me of fan-fiction. It's someone taking the X-Men universe and rolling it into the horror genre. Three stars." Robert: "This is what happens when you try to milk every last possible dime out of your franchise. This is rampant commercialism of sprawling franchises gone horribly wrong. Zero stars." Review - Stranger Things, Season 2 Jermaine: "The hype-train ruined it for me for season 1. It never came together for me. Now I understand the world though, Stranger Things is intriguing as heck. I love these kids. 100% recommendation." Jenny: "I was disappointed with the first season. It was okay. I had no expectations for this second season and then I found out-- 'Haha! It's better than nothing!' I recommend it!" Robert: "Communal group watching of TV shows is the best ever. The Duffer brothers are excellent at instilling dread and ominous feeling. Total recommendation." Recommendations: Jermaine reads The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett-- "A world where demons come out of the ground and kill people! I am so enamored. I burned through it in three days." Robert garners insight into the perspective of women by reading up on girlsaskguys.com-- "It's an interesting place to get opinions from both genders!" Jenny watches Judah Friedlander: America is the Greatest Country in the United States-- "I've watched it three times and it's fantastically funny." Credits: "It's finger-lickin' good!"
