He explains how he mixes the serious "voice" of a how‑to manual with completely ridiculous wizardly details—like emergency cheese, space pie, and strict duel etiquette (no summoning Grandma… she's way too powerful!). Keith talks about testing jokes on his kids, constantly collecting ideas from everyday life, and starting his stories with strong visual images that make kids eager to turn the page. He also describes his journey from editorial illustration to children's books and the "Gandalf" mentor who gave him permission to trust his own creative instincts. In the second half, Wanda takes listeners on a warm, heartfelt trip to Cidra, Puerto Rico through Carina and Sabi. She introduces Sabi, a magical Paloma Sabanera (an endangered pigeon found only in parts of Puerto Rico), and explains how the story celebrates nature, heritage, and the pride of growing up Puerto Rican. Wanda and Jed swap personal memories of Puerto Rico—coquí frogs, family, festivals, and food—and explore how stories can help all children, whether or not they're Puerto Rican, feel curious about other cultures while becoming more proud of their own.

Where do the ideas for picture books come from? For my guest, Molly Arbuthnott, they started from the imagined adventures of her family cat who was lost on a ferry trip.In this interview, I talk with Molly about how she started writing picture books, how she is trying to market them for adults as well as children, and some encouragement for those just starting out on the writing adventure.About MollyMolly Arbuthnott is a teacher, author, editor, and academic from Scotland. Each book collaborates with a charity which is associated with the theme of the book in some way. Her writing has received acclaim during book tours worldwide and won national awards; they have been shortlisted for the People's Book Prize, won the Wishing Shelf Book awards and the Firebird Book Awards. She's shared academic papers with IRSCL Congress. She has been published in the ‘Once Upon Another Time' anthology by the Book Whisperers and she has received the Emily Dickinson Award. In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed welcomes Kobe Yamada to celebrate his new picture book, "Others." Kobe shares that the book is all about empathy and perspective, inviting kids (and the adults reading with them) to think about how we see people we don't yet know. The story is set up as a conversation between two characters on one side of a tall hedge—a hedge that acts as both a physical and psychological barrier. While the characters can't see what's on the other side, the reader can, thanks to illustrator Charles Santoso's imaginative art. Kobe explains that "Others" starts off silly and absurd, mirroring how we often form opinions with very little real information. As the book goes on, the tone becomes more meaningful and sincere, opening the door to conversations about assumptions, fear, curiosity, and connection. He talks about how experiences like travel, new foods, and meeting neighbors from different cultures can help kids (and adults) expand their world. Kobe also describes his approach to picture books as writing for a dual audience—creating stories that encourage deep conversations between children and caregivers, and that gain new layers of meaning as readers grow up. In the final part of the episode, Jed chats briefly with Kate Korsch about her hilarious new chapter book "Una Bramblegoop, Sideways Magic: Newbie Fairy"—a fun, underwear-themed, magic-filled story perfect for kids who love silly humor and heartfelt friendships.
