In this mini episode, I'm sharing something that's been on my heart lately: that uncomfortable place where our creative ideas get stuck. You know the one — where you're holding onto something beautiful, but fear, perfectionism, or just plain old procrastination keeps it tucked away. This reflection was sparked by a recent conversation with my sister. She has an amazing idea she's been sitting on since the pandemic, and it got me thinking… How often do we do this to ourselves? How often do we protect our ideas so much that we stop them from growing? In this episode, I talk about the power of small steps — the kind that might seem insignificant at first, but that slowly, steadily builds momentum. If you've been feeling stuck or overwhelmed about where to start, this one's for you. No pressure, just a gentle nudge to begin. Even the tiniest action matters. Let's walk through it together.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Creative Life 02:58 The Dangers of Limbo and Resistance 06:14 Navigating Procrastination and Community Support 09:04 Taking Small Steps Towards Momentum 11:54 Embracing Your Creative Journey Website: Martine Severin Follow on Instagram: @martineseverin | @thisishowwecreate Subscribe to the Newsletter: Martine's Substack   Production Credits This podcast episode is produced and written by Martine Severin and edited by Daniel Espinosa

In this episode, Paul has a feeling in his bones and completely forgets how science works. "Life," directed by Daniel Espinosa and released in 2017, is a science fiction horror film that takes the familiar setting of space exploration and infuses it with gripping tension and existential dread. The film follows a team of six astronauts aboard the International Space Station who make a groundbreaking discovery: a single-celled organism from Mars, dubbed "Calvin," which provides the first proof of extraterrestrial life. However, their excitement quickly turns to terror as Calvin rapidly evolves into a highly intelligent and hostile entity, threatening the lives of the crew and potentially all of humanity. The ensemble cast, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds, delivers compelling performances that heighten the film's sense of urgency and claustrophobia. "Life" stands out for its intense atmosphere and the seamless integration of science fiction and horror elements. The film's setting within the confined, zero-gravity environment of the space station amplifies the tension, creating a claustrophobic backdrop where the crew must use their wits and limited resources to survive. The alien entity, Calvin, is a formidable antagonist, its rapid evolution and adaptability presenting a constant and escalating threat. With its blend of high-stakes drama, suspenseful pacing, and striking visual effects, "Life" offers a harrowing exploration of the dangers of space exploration and the potential perils of discovering alien life. The film raises thought-provoking questions about humanity's readiness to encounter extra-terrestrial beings and the unforeseen consequences that such discoveries might entail. This week, as Ryan Reynolds rides into theatres with the big screen release of I.F., we wind it back a few years to another movie he's in that adds a couple extra letters to that pair: 2017's Life, directed by Morbius helmer Daniel Espinosa, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada and Ariyan Sanada. It's a space-set creature feature that aims to evoke Alien but doesn't quite hit those same classic heights. Is it still passable? Our hosts are split, as this unseen selection from Hayley's collection was a J Mo rewatch, and the movie plays a bit differently perhaps when you know its twists. Otherwise we're hyperfixated on live pro wrestling and the TV show LOST, so it's a pretty standard week around here. Also, has anyone else noticed that Ryan Reynolds kinda sucks? If you'd like to watch Life before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Speed Racer, Party of Five, The Witcher, Expend4bles, Masters of the Universe, The Fall Guy, Jungle Cruise, Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, Love and Basketball, Planet of the Apes (2001), Big Brother Canada, I.S.S., Sunshine, Venom, Deadpool, Executive Decision, The Suicide Squad, Underwater, Passengers, Baby Driver, Rough Night, Hacks, Resident Evil, Starship Troopers, Free Guy, Two Guys A Girl and a Pizza Place, Red Notice, R.I.P.D., and many more. We'll be back next week with our first ever episode recorded live in the same room, as Hayley's come out to the coast to watch Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in IMAX, and we will have a full reaction recorded almost immediately after seeing the film in theaters. So look forward to that, as well as the week after, when we close out May by inducting Mad Max: Fury Road into the podcast canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

How do they use real world situations to create a lack of trust for both the characters and the viewer? How well does the fish-out-of-water setting increase the sense of tension and isolation for the protagonist? Also, Matt saw 2017's Life from Morbius director, Daniel Espinosa. What did he think? Listen now to find out!In addition to the movie discussions, Tim has been fired from Harry and the Hendersons II: The Squatchening for the third, and seemingly final time. This week, Leah and Bri succumb to the memes. We're talking about Sony's disastrous attempt to replicate the freak box office success of Venom. Yep, we're talking about Morbius (2022, dir. Daniel Espinosa). The twist? Only Bri has seen the cursed film. Leah has to guess what actually happened in the film and what's crap Bri made up. The episode unfolds in quiz form, so you can play along with Leah! Share your scores. This episode is, honestly, probably more fun if you haven't actually seen Morbius. This episode is marked explicit for some f-bombs, as usual. Sound effects credits: “Creaking door.wav” by visualasylum of Freesound.org (https://freesound.org/s/322377/) "Door, Wooden, Close, A (H1).wav" by InspectorJ (www.jshaw.co.uk) of Freesound.org (https://freesound.org/s/411791/) Support the show

Yes, there were re-shoots and delays and Spider-Man was removed from the film (in case you hawkish-ly watch trailers), but the film is worth discussing with some nuance! Perhaps more believable nuance than Adria Arjona's Martine got but come on, people! Grab a beer and get ready for a conversation. Jared Leto, Jared Harris, Matt Smith, Al Madrigal, Tyrese Gibson, (it's all men, in case you haven't noticed...) Michael Keaton... is not in the movie but apparently after credit scenes count now and can earn you a top-5 imdb credit (see: Harry Styles & Patton Oswalt in Eternals). A aposta deu certo? More Movies Please!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are floating around for the sake of our dang lives in the 2017 film from Daniel Espinosa, Life. I'm going to make it my mission in, ahem, life to never find myself traveling into space. Outer space, inner space, it doesn't matter. I don't want any part of the universe outside of the atmosphere of Earth. No good can come of rejecting the gravity of this planet. What, does that seem extreme to you? Should I have some sort of noble explorer's spirit and want to venture out into the farthest reaches of the universe? Should I want to boldly go where no human has gone before? And for what, the betterment of humankind? Did you even watch this film yet? I encourage you to do so if you haven't. Pay particular attention to what happens to poor Ryan Reynolds, Sexiest Man Alive in 2010. Do you want your insides to become blenderized into a goo that you spew out before dying a sad, lonely death? That's probably guaranteed in space. If movies have taught us anything, and why else are we here on this podcast, it's that space is full of murderous alien creatures who want to kill and/or eat our sexiest people (I'll include myself in that, because why not?). Save the sexiness by staying on Earth.
