Can Stories Build a More Just World for Our Children? In this heartfelt episode, I share a powerful conversation with my 10-year-old son, Aidyn, sparked during our morning drive to school. His reflection on Donald Trump's proposal to eliminate the Department of Education stopped me in my tracks:“What does he think America is? His playbox? All he's doing is building up sandcastles.”To Aidyn, sandcastles are fleeting—ego-driven creations that crumble with the tide. And in that moment, I realized: His ability to see power so clearly didn't come from nowhere—it came from stories.Books have been our bridge to understanding justice, humanity, and the weight of power. Together, we've explored how power can lift or destroy, and how justice demands more than showmanship—it demands care, courage, and connection. But this conversation isn't just about politics—it's about parenting. It's about how we prepare our children, especially Black children, to navigate a world that often misjudges them. Through stories, Aidyn has learned to recognize injustice, challenge false narratives, and see beyond fear-laden stereotypes to the truth.Because storytelling isn't just an art—it's a tool for connection and change. In this episode, I also draw from the wisdom of:

The Stories Behind Adoption for Children w/ Anna Maria DiDio

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2022 29:34

We often hear about adoption from the adoptive parent's point of view. Rarely do we get to step into the mind of a child and learn what the experience is for them. Once the actual adoption process is finalized, it's easy to negate all the emotions the child experiences. And while adoption is beautiful, the child often struggles through trauma, separation, and loss.  Before children can even explore adjusting to this new life, their emotions around adoption deserve our attention.  This author spotlight is on Anna Maria DiDio, MSW. Ana Maria is a writer, speaker, women's advocate, adoption life coach, and mother.  Using her own experience, Anna Maria started journaling her adoption adventure to Mexico and writing a memoir and children's book about adoption and blended families. Her book Many People to Love encourages readers to explore what children think and feel about their new family and the family they may have left behind. A sensitive and powerful book that focuses on children's emotions and learning a new culture without losing their identity. Throughout the conversation, we discuss the untold stories of adoption and blended families. Anna Maria shares why it's important to listen to children's voices about their adoption, how to help them process their unresolved emotions and issues, and how to guide and support them on this new journey. She also talks about what led her to adopt, her family's challenges, and her advice to parents considering adoption.Learn more about Anna Maria DiDio>> https://www.amdidio.com/ Grab the book Many People to Love by Anna Maria DiDio, illustrated by Tatiana Lobanova>> https://amzn.to/3oeW6oz Connect with Anna Maria DiDio on:>> Instagram: https://instagram.com/amdidio>> Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/anna.m.didio Watch the full video interview with Anna Maria DiDio>> https://www.facebook.com/AidynsBooks/videos/1201865670649421/ Free gift

In this episode, we discuss humor as a tool for parenting. We discuss how humor allows our children to play with words and discover new ways to view the world. While this episode has many many hilarious moments, we also discuss the importance of diversity in books and the barriers that exist for Black and Brown authors. Jacob Eckeberger is a first-time author living in Minneapolis, MN with a family that lovingly puts up with his terrible dad jokes. His favorite books to read with his family are those that create memorable moments with his kids. That's why his first book is an invitation to a special moment, with a good excuse to giggle along the way. Jacob's book is dedicated to the kids who put up with all the very, terribly, awfully, painfully, bad jokes from their dads! Check out Jacob's hilarious and picture book here. It has over 100 5-star reviews.. so.. thank me later!)https://amzn.to/3LwiVhGThis episode was originally recorded via video on facebook:https://www.facebook.com/quinnpc619/videos/176427327732222Free gift
