I mean, I don't know you. Maybe you didn't grow up in an evangelical Christian subculture. But if you did, there's a high likelihood that the ideas you absorbed about how men and women behave—and what it even means to be masculine or feminine—were influenced heavily by C.S Lewis' famous Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. On this fascinating episode, Kathryn Wagner (returning guest and medieval lit scholar) and Robin Harris (writer and incoming seminarian) stopped by to evaluate Lewis' takes on gender against both more modern feminist sensibilities and much older writers and theologians in the Christian tradition. You should absolutely join us.★ About Our Guests:Robin Harris is a North Carolina based freelance writer and editor who specializes in Bible curriculum. Brian springs an awful Aslan casting surprise on Nate, and the results are delightful. The SASF discussion of Greta Gerwig's new Netflix Narnia series ranges far afield. Planet Narnia, which book of the series is Nate's favorite, Lewis's repeated character archetypes, adaptation of books to film... this one has all things Lewis. Including Nate's claim that Edmund / Eustace / Digory all behave the way they do because CSL had thumbs that couldn't bend.

Our guest for this 83rd episode of Merely Catholic, the podcast series for the Catholic Herald, is Fr Michael Ward, the English literary critic and theologian and an internationally recognised expert on the writings of CS Lewis. Perhaps best known for his 2010 book Planet Narnia, Fr Ward is an associate member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford, and Professor of Apologetics at Houston Christian University. He played the role of a vicar in The Most Reluctant Convert, the CS Lewis biopic. He has also reviewed films and plays for the Catholic Herald and other media. He talks to Dr Gavin Ashenden about why Lewis continues to appeal to millions of Catholics and to discuss where Lewis's theology would fit in today's ecclesial landscape.

In this episode, I got to talk with Michael Ward. Ward is an English literary critic and theologian at the University of Oxford where he serves as an associate member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion. He is the author of many books including Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis and After Humanity: A Guide to C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man. Dr. Ward is also a Professor of Apologetics at Houston Christian University in Texas. Most notably, Ward was in The World Is Not Enough, a James Bond movie from 1999. Michael and I discuss his book, Planet Narnia in this episode. We talk about the Ward's finding of the secret hidden continuity between the seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia and how each book aligns with a medieval cosmological planet (it sounds crazy but it's not!). Planet Narnia is one of the most significant books on Lewis and children's fantasy of this past century, I hope you enjoy learning about it in this conversation. Enjoy! Dr. Michael Ward is an English literary critic and theologian. He works at the University of Oxford where he is a member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion. He is the author of the award-winning Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis. He joins Kelsi to discuss the theory behind Planet Narnia which asserts that C.S. Lewis intentionally tied each of his seven Chronicles directly to one of the seven planets: the sun, the moon, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mercury, and Mars. This theory makes Lewis' work within the Chronicles not only much more intentional and intricate, but also has theological implications for how the author would have wanted readers to interact with his famous children's series. In this weeks Christmas edition, Josh and Ritchie get into a conversation on the Seven Heavens. They discuss whether there's three heavens or seven heavens. They talk about the seven heavens in Ancient Jewish sources. They talk about Planet Narnia and the ancient pagan view of the seven heavens, and then they get into Dante's "Paradisio" and his synthesis of the seven heavens. They also talk about how the modern cosmology of the world really doesn't help us understand biblical theology and biblical symbolism and how we need to recover this re-enchanted cosmology. “The human mind has no more power of inventing a new value than of imagining a new primary colour, or, indeed, of creating a new sun and a new sky for it to move in.” C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man In this episode we are joined by Michael Ward, author of the award-winning and best-selling Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis and After Humanity: A Guide to C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man. We discuss Michael's theory, laid out in Planet Narnia, that Lewis wrote the series to have each book centred around the influence of each of the seven heavenly bodies of medieval cosmology. We also discuss Lewis' work the need for objective truth, especially in education, in The Abolition of Man, how he represented these ideas through fiction in his Space Trilogy, in particular the last book of the series That Hideous Strength. We're back! In this long-overdue episode, David leads us through a delightful discussion on Michael Ward's expository work Planet Narnia. We learn all about the secret literary machinations of C. S. Lewis, age-old beliefs concerning celestial bodies, and how we can apply the seemingly esoteric wisdom of these symbols in Narnia to our everyday lives. If you are longtime Narnia fans, prepare to be astounded by new meanings we shall uncover for you (and please pardon the bits of Narnia canon we misconstrue). If you have never read Narnia, ready your mind and ears to be persuaded to add this wondrous series and Dr. Ward's charming companion to your reading pile post-haste. Enjoy!
My guest is Father Michael Ward of Blackfriars Hall, Oxford and also of Houston Baptist University. Fr Ward has an enviable trifecta in his academic pedigree—degrees from Oxford, Cambridge, and St. Andrews. Fr. Ward is perhaps best known for his book Planet Narnia, which explains the correlation of each Narnia book to a planet in medieval cosmology. His recently released book from Word on Fire Academic, After Humanity: A Guide to C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man is the primary subject of our discussion, but we also talk about James Bond. Joseph Holmes and Nathan Clarkson are joined by famous CS Lewis scholar Michael Ward (author of Planet Narnia and After Humanity) to discuss why CS Lewis remains so popular and what we can learn from his example.
There has always been something special about The Chronicles of Narnia. It's captured the imaginations of generations and inspired joy for many of us. But what if there was even more to the story than meets the eye? That's what we are talking about in this episode! I am joined by Dr. Michael Ward, author of The Narnia Code, Senior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford, and Professor of Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, Texas. We talk about the secret atmosphere and clues that Lewis left in Narnia, and how it can help show us more of who God is. This was such a fun episode to record! Michael knows so much about Lewis, as he studied his writing for his PhD. He even spent a few years living in Lewis' house, the Kilns. His PhD was published as Planet Narnia, and it became a BBC documentary, The Narnia Code. To find about more about Michael, visit his website and you can find his new book, After Humanity, here. Today, we finish our conversation on chapters 1-4 of the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. In this episode, Dale and Joseph discuss "Planet Narnia" with the book's author, Michael Ward.
In 2008, Dr. Michael Ward released "Planet Narnia", a book which caused a real stir in C.S. Lewis studies in which he offered a new lens through which to view "The Chronicles of Narnia". On today's show, in addition to his book, Dr. Ward discusses his friendship with the late Walter Hooper, as well as his involvement in honouring Lewis' life and legacy. Oh yes, and he also explains how he came to give James Bond a pair of x-ray glasses…
We're back, and we're talking C.S. Lewis and the conspiracy that he laid within his work from when he was a child! We go in depth on the work of Michael Ward and his idea that C.S. Lewis use imagery of the planets to help showcase the Narnia realms. We have a Patreon now! www.patreon.com/lewisandlovecraft Go there and support us, and get cool things. Matt Mikalatos took more time to talk with us about Narnia and C.S. Lewis, with lots of interesting parts we haven't covered in our series - like an eco-critical reading of Narnia, guessing Lewis' enneagram number, Planet Narnia, and how Lewis wrote letters to children explaining the Narnia series in ways he never made public. The Highlights: Aslan’s How: a house put together by Dr. Garry Friesan for male students attending Multnomah University (Multnomah Bible College when we went there). Paul mentions the best box set being this one and we agree. Lewis’ favorite author/theologian was named George McDonald. He was a Victorian era preacher and fantasy writer known for his heretical views. Phantastes by MacDonald, Lewis said, “baptized his imagination”. The Silver Chair synopsis. The Silver Chair also includes one of the best characters in Lewis’ canon, Puddleglum Michael Ward wrote a book on the Narnia stories being linked to medieval conceptions of various planets. Check out his website, Planet Narnia. Why hasn’t The Silver Chair been made into a major motion picture? The Silver Chair corresponds to Luna, or the moon. The Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross is an initiatory moment. Holy Darkness is different and holds richness because they dwell in obscurity or shadow, which is present in Godself. The Scriptures say that God dwells in deep darkness.

Michael Ward gives his lecture, "Planet Narnia: C.S. Lewis's Medieval Imagination," in Speaker's Corner at Villanova University.
C.S. Lewis was one of the most influential Christian writers of the 20th Century and remains so today. Many are familiar with his Narnia stories, but he was also a populariser of Christian apologetics, and continues to be the first place that many encounter the key arguments for Christian faith. 60 years on from when they were written, are his arguments for God and Christ still compelling? We look at Lewis' Natural Law argument for God in "Mere Christianity", his Argument from Reason in "Miracles" and his classic 'Trilemma' - Jesus is either a liar, lunatic, or Lord. Michael Ward is Chaplain of St. Peter's College, Oxford and a research fellow at the Independent Institute. He is a leading authority on CS Lewis. His books "Planet Narnia" and "The Narnia Code" unearthed a hidden dimension to the Narnia chronicles. He also lectures on the apologetics of C.S. Lewis. Dan Barker is a US atheist and heads up the Freedom From Religion Foundation. As a Christian he read "Mere Christianity" but on re-reading it as an atheist found it unconvincing. They debate the faith, philosophy and apologeics of CS Lewis. Laura Miller was captivated by Lewis' Narnia stories as a child. As a teenager she learnt of the Christian parallels in the books and felt "cheated and betrayed". Find out why in today's programme and how she has come to terms with Narnia by writing "The Magician's Book". Michael Ward is a leading expert on CS Lewis and author of "Planet Narnia". As a Christian the Narnia stories served to deepen his faith, and he has also recently uncovered a rich secret within the books that has gone unnoticed until now. They discuss how the Christian Narnia affected Miller and some of the criticisms she levels at them in her book.
