I mean, I don't know you. Maybe you didn't grow up in an evangelical Christian subculture. But if you did, there's a high likelihood that the ideas you absorbed about how men and women behave—and what it even means to be masculine or feminine—were influenced heavily by C.S Lewis' famous Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. On this fascinating episode, Kathryn Wagner (returning guest and medieval lit scholar) and Robin Harris (writer and incoming seminarian) stopped by to evaluate Lewis' takes on gender against both more modern feminist sensibilities and much older writers and theologians in the Christian tradition. You should absolutely join us.★ About Our Guests:Robin Harris is a North Carolina based freelance writer and editor who specializes in Bible curriculum. In this episode, we're joined by Andrew Koperski (Hillsdale College, Ad Fontes) to explore one of the most debated and often misunderstood practices in the history of Christianity: baptism. Drawing from his in-depth research, Andrew takes us through the earliest Christian sources—from Second Temple Judaism to Justin Martyr, and from household baptisms to the evolving liturgical traditions of the early church. We discuss: Did the earliest Christians baptize infants or only professing believers? How did the theology of the church fathers evolve and adapt to the shifting environment of the Roman Empire? What role does sociology play in the development of infant baptism? Why modern categories of “credobaptist” and “paedobaptist” may not neatly map onto the early church.

My guest on this episode of the podcast is Kevin LaTorre, a poet and writer living with his family in North Carolina. His work has appeared in The Blotter, Echo Literary Magazine, Walter Magazine, Ad Fontes, and the Front Porch Republic. He writes about poetry, Christianity, and literature at A Stylist Submits.I asked Kevin to pick one text, idea, person, encounter that he thought captured something about where things are today, and his choice was What to Do with Climate Emotions, by Jia Tolentino, in the New Yorker.Kevin also suggested we have a number of other essays present in the background of our conversation about climate change, catastrophism, pro- and anti-natalism, Tolentino, environmentalism, Christianity, etc. His notes on the background reading:* "Is Abortion Sacred?" by Tolentino in TNY: This 2022 piece discusses the birth of children with a similar ecological pessimism as "Climate Emotions" (arguably to a stronger extent, and again in religious/Christian terms)* "Ha ha! Ha ha!" by Lauren Oyler in The London Review of Books: the premier takedown of Tolentino in polite literary circles - the piece is itself questionable and deeply rude but charges Tolentino as one of the "hysterical critics" who makes everything about her and her own "shoddy mode of [narcissistic] thinking" (I don't know if I fully agree, but the self-centeredness charge is interesting for discussing "Climate Emotions" and how Tolentino seemingly echoes her sources)* Your [i.e. my] piece on The New Yorker: the idea that The New Yorker must "artfully neutralize the cognitive dissonance of liberals" can help us describe Tolentino's development as the aspirational female writer of the 2010s (from Hairpin and Jezebel to TNY staff writer in 2016, fortuitous for her career but possibly at the cost of her teeth and devilish humor?)* "Is It OK to Have a Child?" by Meehan Crist in The London Review of Books: defines pretty well the intellectuals' ecological anti-natalism/pessimism towards birth that Tolentino very much flirts with* Ecological anti-natalism as a philosophy present in environmental activism: there's a long history of this pretty anti-human belief system, and its current iteration that very much simulates the Christian concept of original sin (again, something Tolentino seems to accord with given her evangelical background)Eminent Americans is a reader-supported publication. Kicking off 2024, my fellow podcaster - but really more known as the expert in shoppable video, Cynthia Nelson - turned the mic on me, inviting me to guest on her show “Let's Talk About Live Shopping.” Being in the hot seat myself was instructive as I thought back to the many takeaways of my inspiring guests in the media and marketing landscape this past year. Then we vamped about what's coming down the pike as I head to CES this week! (I encourage listeners to catch the last couple minutes to see if you can spot the AI version of me!) First, Cynthia asked me to reflect on podcasting's continued evolution. I shared some points from Sounds Profitable's Bryan Barletta, a past Insider Interviews guest. As we hit the 03:00 mark, I noted the trend research he and Tom Webster recently shared with the help of another past guest, Paul Riismandel of Signal Hill Insights, on how people are consuming podcasts in video form. (Note: People increasingly “listen” on YouTube while multi-tasking, as formats merge.) Around the 06:44 mark, Cynthia asked about the fuzzy definition of the fast moving category of retail media. (Here's an article I wrote about that.) As lines blur across channels, retail media represents the personalized targeted impressions served to consumers on their path to purchase. This stretches from out-of-home displays driving awareness to retail media networks architected by heir apparents like Walmart and Target (and of course the mac daddy, Amazon.) I passionately relayed the research I could recall from a chock-full interview with Lou Paskalis on news media's high ROAS and its ability to capture lucrative unduplicated audiences. Yet misperceptions linger, undeservedly tarnishing outlets. Quality checks through firms like Ad Fontes help instill confidence for brands to proudly and safely reinvest in news. And hint: that's one of the things I'll be speaking with Matt Prohaska about in a conversation I'll publish out of CES!* Speaking of speaking at CES... I'll be spotting the brand marketing and media stars at Brand Innovators, DPAA, Female Quotient and MediaLink, if they'll have me! Then I'll walking the (2 million square feet!) floor with some trusted pundit friends, David Berkowitz and Kathy Newberger to capture what we're seeing in the media area and the always groovy Eureka! Hall of innovation. I'm looking forward to seeing, of course, voice-activation technologies to a soundbar aiming to help distinguish conversation tones as we age. Finally, I'll share the mic with two brilliant minds from Marketing Architects to hear THEIR takeaways (and don't miss their terrific b2b podcast, too!) So, definitely expect the first full episodes of '24 to deliver MORE! Key Moments: 03:00 - Podcasting still gaining awareness as video podcasts grow 06:44 - Defining the expanding world of retail media 09:46 - Voice tech and accessibility interests at CES 13:30 - Study showing news media's strong ROI but brands hesitant Around 19:00 Is it live or is it Memorex! Points if you know what that is and why I wrote that!

A lecture with Q&A given by Davenant Residential Teaching Fellow, Dr. Joseph Minich, entitled "C.S. Lewis as Historian of Religion." C.S. Lewis wore many hats: children's author, Christian apologist, literary scholar. But can he be read as a theorist of the history of religion? And can reconstructing his theoretical history speak into contemporary controversies about the doctrine of God? By putting Lewis in conversation with some of his major influences (e.g. Owen Barfield) and by reading his fiction (Narnia, The Ransom Trilogy, Till We Have Faces) in conversation with several didactic works (especially Miracles), this lecture argues that we can in fact infer an implicit “history of religion” in Lewis that reconstructs religious knowing from the time of Adam, to the Ancient Near East, to the dawn of philosophical thought. Lewis' implicit narrative reconstruction is likewise an attempt to situate his own modern moment within that same history. And while Lewis was not unaware of the risks of the modern project, he also took its goods for granted, and anticipated their preservation into the future. This lecture, then, likewise covers Lewis' anticipation concerning the possible future of religion. Moreover, one might read Lewis' own intellectual project is an attempt to enact a certain possible future, to publicly gesture man (through the renewal of an atrophied imagination) toward the telos of Christ, who is the human destiny. Joseph Minich (Ph.D, The University of Texas at Dallas) is a Residential Teaching Fellow at The Davenant Institute in Landrum, South Carolina. He is the author of Enduring Divine Absence (Davenant Press, 2017) and Bulwarks of Unbelief (Lexham Press, 2023), the editor of several works with The Davenant Press, as well as the founding editor of Ad Fontes. Nursing homes in Montana are closing this year, and I keep hearing about it from Billings Gazette. The latest one in Miles City makes eleven so far in 2022. And presumably the elderly and otherwise incapable of caring for themselves cannot be taken in by family, or else they wouldn't be in nursing homes. Right? Of course right. Don't ask such triggering questions. You should know better. Also, you must celebrate WNBA player Brittney Griner being traded for the Russian "Merchant of Death." If you object, or question, or express disapproval, you run the risk of being called a bigot of any one or more of several varieties. And you don't want that kind of trouble, do you? Oh, while you're at it. Do make sure to mourn that Arizona Senator Krysten Sinema just announced she's leaving the Democratic party and registering as an Independent instead. Shame on her. I'm not sure why, but this is probably a threat to Democracy. Someone should follow her into a bathroom with cameras again and see if they can persuade her to change her mind. It's worth a shot. Thankfully, "The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty," is both merciful to the penitent, and also just toward the stubborn and stiff-necked. But that brings us to the rather less comfortable question of whether we Americans have become a stiff-necked people. Enter Thomas F. Booher and Brad Littlejohn, writing for The Tulip Driven Life and Ad Fontes, respectively. Again and again, it seems, we come back to this issue of what to do about so-called "Christian nationalism," including the preliminary, and entirely routine, attempts to define both "Christian" and "nationalism" to exclude the unorthodox, and distance ones self from the heterodox. But let us do also spend some time on the curious case of Cameron Bretuzzi, of Capturing Christianity. Less than a month ago he sat down with Matt Fradd of Pints With Aquinas to discuss his conversion from de facto Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. Other than the architecture and art, what's the draw? Perhaps this: that some people do just want to be told what to do, think, feel, and believe. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

During this episode, Vanessa Otero discusses news ecosystem health and how she created The Media Bias Chart®. Our wide ranging conversation covers her methodology for grading media content, the Overton window, information nutritional labels, societal implications of unhealthy news consumption patterns. Research Topic: Vanessa suggests that researchers examine ways to get people out of conspiracy theory rabbit holes or extreme polarization rabbit holes. She also asserts that media trust is over studied and that researchers should focus less on that problem. A licensed patent attorney in the Denver, Colorado area, Vanessa holds a B.A. in English from UCLA and a J.D. from the University of Denver. Vanessa's formal education and professional career has centered on analytical reading, writing and reasoning, creating an ideal background for her to create a content analysis Alarmed by the unhealthy state of the media ecosystem, Vanessa used her expertise in content analysis to create the original Media Bias Chart in 2016. Then in 2018, she founded Ad Fontes Media to fulfill the need revealed by the popularity of the chart–namely, to meet the demand for a map to help people navigate the complex media landscape, and for comprehensive content analysis of media sources themselves. Today, Ad Fontes Media uses a systematic approach to content analysis in which a team of politically-balanced professional analysts examine and categorize news content creating data that is useful to news consumers, educators, marketers, and even publishers themselves. Ad Fontes also offers training in its content analysis methodology through products and services for educational institutions and for individuals. Vanessa is on the Board of Directors of Community Radio for Northern Colorado and is on the Advisory Council of Media Literacy Now. Vanessa and Ad Fontes Media have also been published or featured in articles and blogs on news literacy, news bias and free speech, social media, and conspiracy theories. These sources have included the Poynter Institute, Cornell Policy Review MarketWatch, The Economist, Morning Brew, and more. She is a much sought-after speaker at national news literacy workshops and webinars.  Vanessa is committed to making the world a better place with her passion and belief in decreasing the polarization in our news and our society, as well as educating students, teachers, and the public on the true value of media literacy and the importance of a healthy news ecosystem. In this episode, Sharon speaks with Vanessa Otero, the founder of Ad Fontes Media–the media company that is responsible for the dynamic Media Bias Chart. If you've follow Sharon on Instagram at @sharonsaysso, then you've seen her link to the Media Bias Chart many times. The conversation today centers around the importance of trust and reliability in the media. Ad Fontes analysts use the acronym RELI as news source benchmarks, which stands for reputation, evidence, likelihood, and incentive. As news consumers, it's important for us to remember that true news journalism seeks to answer our questions, not provide analysis or opinion. We are used to thinking about news in a binary: real news vs. fake news, but as Vanessa explains, it's more of a gradient of reliability, from a top tier of fact-based “who, what, when, where” news reporting down to misleading and inaccurate information. Most of our news media falls in the middle. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Overview of Walker's book: eschatology, anthropology, missiology, and an appendix The logic of the gospel plays out in each of these - each requires religious liberty: if Christians want to evangelize, we must accept that people might not believe, which entails that people are free not to believe. Hence, the government cannot impose upon people any beliefs. This has assumptions about baptism: we have to choose the gospel. Hence, society must be arranged in such a way that chosen baptism is possible.

In 2016, patent attorney Vanessa Otero posted a chart on the web. It was a simple graphic, rating the bias of news sources. And it went absolutely viral. This chart was the first of many iterations of the Ad Fontes Media Bias Chart, a map that helps news consumers, educators and communications pros navigate the complexities of today's media landscape. While the chart began as Otero's own content analysis work, today, it is created by a team of professional analysts who are politically balanced, and who review media sources every day. Despite the state of today's polarized media landscape, Otero remains an optimist. She believes that we can all learn how to safely navigate our current media environment and reduce polarization — as long as we take purposeful steps to become more media literate. Brands, Otero says, have an undeniable role to play in increasing media literacy, and the Media Bias Chart and other tools can help.In this episode, Vanessa and Fred discuss ways that communications professionals can combat polarization and how the current media landscape influences our profession. Vanessa also provides tips on how we can all cultivate a healthier “news diet,” filled with unbiased facts. For more on these topics, check out the playback of the 31st Kenneth Owler Smith Symposium at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78YQGTFQpP8 and the playback of the Relevance Report 2021 Discussion at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK7keTLMP9U.Featuring: Vanessa Otero (@vlotero), CEO and Founder of Ad Fontes Media Host:Fred Cook (@fredcook), Chairman Emeritus of Golin, a global PR firm. Vanessa Otero is the creator of the Media Bias Chart, and the Founder and CEO of Ad Fontes Media A licensed patent attorney in the Denver, Colorado area, Vanessa holds  a B.A. in English from UCLA and a J.D. from the University of Denver. Vanessa's formal education and professional career has centered on analytical reading, writing and reasoning, creating an ideal background for her to create a content analysis methodology for evaluating text.  Alarmed by the unhealthy state of the media ecosystem, Vanessa used  her expertise in content analysis  to create the original Media Bias Chart in 2016. Ad Fontes also offers training in its content analysis methodology through products and services for educational institutions and for individuals.Vanessa is on the Board of Directors of Community Radio for Northern Colorado and is on the Advisory Council of Media Literacy Now. Vanessa has also been published or featured in articles and blogs on news literacy, news bias and free speech, social media, and conspiracy theories. These sources have included the Poynter Institute, BigThink, MarketWatch, Lifehacker, City A.M. and more.  She is a much sought-after speaker at national news literacy workshops and webinars, and presented a workshop at the Northeast Media Literacy Conference this past fall.  Vanessa is committed to making the world a better place with her passion and belief in decreasing the polarization in our news and our society, as well as educating students, teachers, and the public on the true value of media literacy and the importance of a healthy news ecosystem.Follow and connect with Vanessa: @vlotero, @adfontesmedia, https://www.facebook.com/adfontesmedia, https://www.linkedin.com/company/adfontesmedia/Promo: Sarah Wells http://www.liveworkdenver.com/★ Support this podcast ★

This time we have another guest on the show.   Zach Garris, Author of “Masculine Christianity” and Editor of “Dabney on Fire: A Theology of Parenting, Education, Feminism, and Government” joins us to talk patriarchy, feminism, and the influence intersectionality, feminism, and intersectional feminism has had in the culture from the days of the early "women's movement" of the 1800s. Its creep into the interpretation of text and general softness growing in the broader evangelical church, even into confessionally reformed denominations.   As Dabney so eloquently put it regarding the Bible's clear teaching on men and women. "Let every one make up his mind honestly either to reject the Bible as a fable, and thus preserve his Jacobin (protocommunist/marxist) humanitarianism, or frankly to surrender the latter in order to retain the gospel."   No wonder Aimee keeps giving the Bird to R L Dabney   Confused about complementarianism and egalitarianism?   The intellectuals at Wikipedia state simply:   “Complementarians assign primary headship roles to men and support roles to women based on their interpretation of certain biblical passages. One of the precepts of complementarianism is that while women may assist in the decision-making process, the ultimate authority for the decision is the purview of the man in marriage, courtship, and in the polity of churches subscribing to this view. The main contrasting viewpoint is egalitarianism, which maintains that positions of authority and responsibility in marriage and religion should be equally available to females as well as males.”     Weak sauce has withered into “nice” and “soft” sauce in many churches. Publishers, Theologians, and Churches are collapsing into affirmation of (or silence on) "thin complementarianism" by Egalitarian critiques hiding with Beth Moore and her acolytes in Presbyterian and Reformed Denominations behind the accusation of abuse.   While abuse is wrong in all circumstances, it does not negate the right use of father rule or male headship. In fact, a good Christian patriarchy would crush this abuse resolutely rather quickly. Speaking of abuse, the irony of the ideology of egalitarianism (and its doting spawn, feminism) is that egalitarianism via socialism/communism/humanist atheism murdered in the neighborhood of 100 million for the sake of “equality.” It was also the ideological source of the guillotine for 14,000 people in France. That's not abuse of an ideology, that's just its standard operating procedure once in full swing. It is always wise to consider the source of ideas like egalitarianism and patriarchy, by using what's referred to as Ad Fontes "to the sources."    The new "thin" or “narrow complementarianism” is the fruit of far too many churchmen being afraid to stand firm for something simple- father rule in the home, and the role of Elder and Deacon limited to men. This used to be called, simply and biblically, Patriarchy. Then emerged complementarianism as the cowed evangelical response to the cultural climate, now currently splitting at the metaphysical seams.    To put it simply.   Christian Patriarchy is good. Feminism and Egalitarianism are... bad.    Let's talk Masculine Christianity   Looking for more from Zach?   Teach Diligently Website     KnowingScripture Website   For more on the Noahic covenant and a critique of the R2K (“the Reformed” Two Kingdom), aka Escondido Theology, see below:   Should We Seek a Christian Government? OA209: Kavanaugh's Confirmation

Opening Arguments

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 13, 2018 81:56

Today's Rapid Response Friday is all about the conclusion of the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings for Brett Kavanaugh.  What did we learn?  What's still outstanding?  Are liberals really guilty of trying to bribe Susan Collins?  And, most importantly:  what can we do about any of this??  Listen and find out! We begin, however, with an important Andrew Was Wrong. After that, we delve into all the week's issues surrounding the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, including:  (1) the status of Kavanaugh's nomination; (2) whether liberal crowdfunding efforts really count as efforts to "bribe" Republican Sen. Susan Collins; (3) an in-depth look at Kavanaugh's written answers to the Senate Judiciary Committee; (4) a shockingly misleading question from Opening Arguments's good friend, Sen. Ted Cruz; and finally (5) a preview of next Tuesday's discussion of a weird case called Glucksburg.  Phew! After all that, we end with an all new Thomas Takes The Bar Exam #93 regarding double jeopardy.  Did Thomas learn enough from the Ashley Judd Law'd Awful Movie of the same name??  We'll find out!  And, of course, if you'd like to play along with us, just retweet our episode on Twitter or share it on Facebook along with your guess and the #TTTBE hashtag.  We'll release the answer on next Tuesday's episode along with our favorite entry! Appearances Andrew will be debating originalist (and Kavanaugh clerk!) Justin Reed Wilson in Louisville, Kentucky on September 27 at Impellizzeri's Pizza.  Be there and be square! Show Notes & Links This is the (ugh) Newsmax exclusive about Collins's accusations of "bribery;" you can click here to see what Ad Fontes thinks about Newsmax as an organization.  The bribery law, of course, is 18 U.S.C. § 201., and the court decision we discuss is McDonnell v. U.S., 136 U.S. 2355 (2016). Here's the late-breaking Feinstein letter. We strongly recommend reading Kavanaugh's answers.  If you can stomach his misuse of the word "precedent" every few lines. This is the transcript of Ted Cruz's "Washington Generals" questions of Kavanaugh, and if you want a head start on next week, you can start reading Washington v. Glucksberg, 521 U.S. 702 (1997). "Ad fontes," said Erasmus. Return to the sources! The brand new Tyndale House Greek New Testament uses a distinct methodology to attempt to do just that. Does it succeed? Dr. Todd Scacewater, founder of Exegetical Tools, explains the point of a new Greek New Testament and gives an in-depth review of this new effort from Crossway. Simply put, restorationism is the approach to Christianity that seeks to compare accepted doctrines and practices against the bible to see if they are valid.  Our intention is to recover authentic New Testament Christianity and live it out today.  We hold God’s inspired scriptures above traditions, creeds, and clergy.  The time is ripe for us Read more about 88: Restorationist Manifesto[…]
