A wonderful conversation at a troubled time with author Ethan Bryan, whose book “A Year of Playing Catch” chronicled embracing that concept every day in 2018 , and built an initiative he is repeating this year. Connections using a simple game of catch from near and far, and an inspirational tale for all ages.
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ… Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 5:21, 6:1-4). Did you know children play "catch" with their parents all day long? Children spend their lives catching how parents live, catching how they talk, catching their ways of responding, and catching their walk with God - or lack thereof. Faith is contagious. So is apathy. Since parents set the patterns, I will reflect mostly on parenting here. According to historical sources, a Roman father had absolute power over his family. He could sell them as slaves, make them work his fields in chains, punish as he liked, he could even inflict the death penalty on his child. Children were a nuisance; unwanted babies were abandoned, the deformed and sick were killed; children were ignored or used for parental purposes. In contrast, Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me' and ‘to such belongs the kingdom of God.' We notice that Paul follows Jesus rather than the culture of the Roman Empire. The Christian family, like the church, is lived under this rubric, ‘submit to each other out of reverence for Christ'. In the marriage relationship, Paul calls us to a better way. Here too. But we are far removed from Roman culture. The world has many cultures, and each has its own patterns of family life. Paul is not giving us a manual on the parent child relationship that is transcultural, nor a textbook for successful Christian parenting. Parenting will look different in each culture. We are not instructed to abandon our cultural patterns. Rather, we are to engage with them out of “reverence for Christ” while learning “mutual submission.” If I may say it, we are not used to this. Ours is an aggressively competitive culture, in which we measure ourselves against one another: educational credentials, athletic competition, salary, popularity, fashion, appearance, or performance. Competition is bred into us. We evaluate the people around us as winners and losers. We want to win, in family life too. The family is the setting in which competition does the most damage. Whether it is between family members or against another family, competition undermines intimacy and hinders Christian maturity. Our goal is not to win, but to grow up in Christ by being “subject to one another,” even in the family. But it doesn't come easy. It is an art form, best learned in the family setting. Submission means that we set aside our own agendas for the sake of the other. Parents need to wrestle away the goals and dreams they have for their children. “Do not exasperate them.” Even in parenting, we follow the way of Christ. The measuring stick for maturity for the Christian is the “measure of the full stature of Christ.” We pay attention to the ways that Jesus forgave, loved, touched lepers, received outsiders, prayed for his friends. Partnered with mutual submission is reverence for Christ. This is an attitude or disposition that acknowledges God's presence, recognizing that he is more and better than we are. It begins at the burning bush, as we remove our sandals. It permeates our relations as we recognize and reverence Christ in every person we meet, even our parents and children. Fear of the Lord opens our spirits, our souls, to become what we are not yet, growing up into Christ. We play catch with our children all day long. What balls do we throw their way? If our children do not see us practicing submission, why should they obey us? If they do not see the ‘fear of the Lord' in us, where will they see it? There is no manual for success here. Yet, the fear of the Lord includes a deep trust in God's baptismal promises. No matter what happens in life, he remains our faithful God. We entrust our parents and our children to him. Let this blessing encourage both parent and child: Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:17-21).

How fast can you take that worry or stress that you picked up and just throw it right over to your Father. ⚾️ 1Peter 5:7 is not a new scripture and most of us have probably had it memorized since we were little, but this devotion shed a different light on the verse and I felt so encouraged after reading it. It was one of those devotions where you feel the smile on your face getting bigger and bigger as you read it becuase you feel His love and peace.❤️ I shared all these thoughts with you today on the podcast - I know you will leave feeling encouraged and share it with a friend who needs the encouragement too.

Few understand this more than this week's guest, Kevin Negaard. Negaard's journey is nearing his goal of 365 consecutive days of catch. This endeavor has connected him with hundreds of partners, has spanned two continents, and led to two injections in his shoulder. Kevin Negaard was inspired by our guest Ethan Bryan's book A Year of Playing Catch. Once he had the idea, he started building a list of who he'd like to play with and even connected with Ethan Bryan. The most challenging issue for Negaard has actually been the social media posts each day. Playing catch, even throwing a ball off a wall by himself, has always been a pastime for Kevin Negaard. This project, though, has created opportunities to connect with neighbor kids, his wife, and the ability to reconnect with his youth. As important as that process has been for him, he has also raised thousands of dollars for The Miracle League. There comes a time in every man’s life when he’s got to grow up. Personally, I found growing up very hard. I went to college and fell in love with it. And what’s not to love? You meet really interesting people (some very attractive, if you get my drift); you get to yak about really fascinating though useless stuff into the wee hours (and sleep late!); you can play pick-up basketball at nearly any hour of the day (“I got next”); there’s a lot of beer to be drunk and, um, other things to be ingested (some of which will, so you are told, “expand your mind” or something like that); and you don’t really have to work (other than the job you get to raise the money to buy the aforementioned beer). Oh, and the dining hall (a really magical place) always had soft serve! It never occurred to me to leave this youthful paradise of irresponsibility. So I didn’t; I went to graduate school where I continued to live that indolent life for nearly another decade. And even when I was done there and got my first “job”, I continued to live more or less like I did in college well into my 30s, a kind of over-educated man-child. Eventually, though, there was a reckoning. And it was rough. I’ll spare you the sad, painful details. Happily for Bob Brody and his lovely family, his reckoning came sooner and he handled it with much more grace that I did. But our stories of growing up are of an American-male piece. He tells his tale in a wonderful series of vignettes in his new memoir Playing Catch with Strangers: A Family Guy (Reluctantly) Comes of Age (Heliotrope Books, 2017). They are at moments funny, touching, instructive, wise and always heartfelt. And (spoiler alert!) the entire set ends well, because Bob grows up to be a very responsible family man. There comes a time in every man’s life when he’s got to grow up. Personally, I found growing up very hard. I went to college and fell in love with it. And what’s not to love? You meet really interesting people (some very attractive, if you get my drift); you get to yak about really fascinating though useless stuff into the wee hours (and sleep late!); you can play pick-up basketball at nearly any hour of the day (“I got next”); there’s a lot of beer to be drunk and, um, other things to be ingested (some of which will, so you are told, “expand your mind” or something like that); and you don’t really have to work (other than the job you get to raise the money to buy the aforementioned beer). Oh, and the dining hall (a really magical place) always had soft serve! It never occurred to me to leave this youthful paradise of irresponsibility. So I didn’t; I went to graduate school where I continued to live that indolent life for nearly another decade. And even when I was done there and got my first “job”, I continued to live more or less like I did in college well into my 30s, a kind of over-educated man-child. Eventually, though, there was a reckoning. And it was rough. I’ll spare you the sad, painful details. Happily for Bob Brody and his lovely family, his reckoning came sooner and he handled it with much more grace that I did. But our stories of growing up are of an American-male piece. He tells his tale in a wonderful series of vignettes in his new memoir Playing Catch with Strangers: A Family Guy (Reluctantly) Comes of Age (Heliotrope Books, 2017). They are at moments funny, touching, instructive, wise and always heartfelt. And (spoiler alert!) the entire set ends well, because Bob grows up to be a very responsible family man. Playing Catch-upSo, yeah, it’s been awhile. Again. The Screeners had the best of intentions, they promise. Somewhere in the past month or so there were at least two episodes that were planned and fell through the cracks. Since Josh actually went to the theater for said episodes (and he really wants you to know that he did his job in all of this), the four have given up on the lightning round this week and instead have opted for a grab bag of “whatcha been watchin’?”.Chris starts the segment off with a review of the most recent season of Game of Thrones...and ends up somewhere else entirely, but we won’t begrudge him his burning passion for network TV. Or maybe we just fed him the GoT topic so we could post this. Next up is Chad, who admits he’s late to the party for once, but loves Silicon Valley all the same. The show’s been a big hit with a majority of the Screeners, actually, and there’s definitely some fun to be had guessing which of the show’s characters may have been modeled after Josh.Since Josh gets a turn, you know he’s going to insist on talking about one of the movies he actually saw this year. Ex Machina’s part of what seems to be a recent thematic trend in sci-fi; does it have anything to set it apart from, say, Transcendence as an AI movie?In what must have been an attempt to ramp up the energy level for the main event, Melody rounds out the segment by covering the Screeners’ latest failure for an episode plan: Mad Max: Fury Road. Some might say we saved the best for last. One person, amidst a sea of positive reviews, might dare to say otherwise. We’re tired of telling you to guess who that person might be and implying that you might be surprised. You know, and you won’t be.Finally, a Sequel to Encino Man!We just can’t shake the mental image of Pauly Shore riding a velociraptor that we’d hoped against hope would be the climax of Jurassic World. Alas, we’ll have to settle for Chris Pratt on a motorcycle. It’s fine, really. Totally fine.No spoilers for the latest installment of the Godzilla franchise here; you’ll have to listen to hear how much Chris loved it and how deep his forgiving spirit runs.This episode may not look like much in outline form, but trust us; there’s enough material in there to either get you thinking or alienate you forever; take your pick when you’re done with the episode, and head over to Facebook to tell us whether you’ll be coming back for more.
