I haven't been to Kauai since they started the new shuttle service so I wanted to see first hand how getting around Kauai works using the service up on the North side of the island. . I became interested in testing out the new shuttle system, which was introduced to handle the growing number of visitors. Getting around Kauai - Why the Shuttle System Was Necessary The North Shore regions of Hanalei (remember the song Puff the Magic Dragon?) and Haena Point experienced extreme crowding. About 3,000 visitors arrived daily at this location, resulting in significant frustration for local residents and travelers. The location was unable to support such a high number of visitors, which makes getting around Kauai a lot easier. The North Shore regions of Hanalei and Haena Point experienced extreme crowding. About 3,000 visitors arrived daily at this location, resulting in significant frustration for local residents and travelers. The location was unable to support such a high number of visitors. This new reservation system limits the reservations to 900, a significant change for the good. Don't Miss Limahuli Garden I recommend visiting Limahuli Garden if you have available time to experience its beautiful botanical displays featuring Hawaii's native plants. The gardens provide a brief tour of 20-25 minutes that works well between shuttle rides. The shuttle makes a stop at this location so passengers can disembark to explore before getting back on later. My Shuttle Experience and Hiking Trail Getting around Kauai on the North Shore Shuttle Bus The 12:40 pm shuttle slot was ideal for me because I intended to hike just a short section of the Hanakapiai Trail. The later time slot gave me a chance to take my time getting around Kauai up there, and I got there a little earlier, at about noon, so they accommodated me earlier. I completed a two-mile trek to the first lookout, which satisfied me for the day, although adventurous hikers can extend their journey to the beach. The shuttle service functions well and provides stress-free North Shore access at $40 per person for roundtrip travel. Pro Tip - Consider going later in the day. The afternoon visit allowed me to explore leisurely without any time pressure. Where to Catch the Shuttle Multiple stops along the route provide shuttle pickup options.- The Princeville Shopping Center is the best starting point for shuttle service if you're staying in Princeville.- The primary pickup location for shuttles is Waipa Park & Ride, which sits just before Hanalei.- Explore the delightful country atmosphere at Wai‘oli Country Market which makes it worthwhile to visit.- Hanalei Colony Resort functions as an excellent shuttle stop that is simple to reach is you're staying in the condos there. The shuttle service concludes its route at Haena Beach Park which is situated close to the Hanakapiai trailhead leading to multiple scenic beaches. The trailhead is easy to find, with clear signs The view from the first lookout on the Hanakapai Trail Hanakapai Trail the start of the Kalalau Trail Family-Friendly Beaches and Activities The North Shore offers an abundance of beach choices for your day at the shore. Hanalei Beach is actually divided into three sections:- Black Pot Beach Park provides an ideal location for both family outings and picnic activities.- Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park offers ideal conditions for swimming and relaxation.- Wai‘oli Beach Park stands out as my top choice because of its casual atmosphere. **Pro Tip: You should arrive early at the beach if you want to park and spend time there. The reservation system now helps control traffic flow and crowd sizes. Consider Splitting Your Stay For a complete Kauai experience you should divide your stay between the North Shore and Poipu's South Shore. The North Shore delivers a peaceful nature-oriented getaway while Poipu presents visitors with convenient access to fine dining,
There's nothing quite like spending the holidays in paradise, and that's exactly what we did this year. We flew to Kauai early Christmas morning and spent 5 nights on the southern tip of the island in Poipu. Known as the Garden Isle, Kauai's beauty (and the food!) did NOT disappoint.----Adventures & Mousecapades is a passion project from Alicea & Nathan Novak - two Seattleites addicted to The Mouse. What makes a man love a woman? And what qualities make a foreign man fall in love with a Filipina? Bel's husband, Kevin, grew up in Hawaii - where there is a large Filipino community - so he is no stranger to our culture. Life in Hawaii is still much different though than life in the Philippines, where Bel grew up with practices and values she strongly identifies. In this episode, he shares how he met Bel, what it was like to visit her in the Philippines, and what he loves about her and our culture. Like us, you'll get to know our host better through the eyes of her better half; and you'll get to know what loving a Filipina is like through Kevin's own story. Now that we’re past the midway point of 2019, it’s time to assess the state of our Kauai market by looking at some of the latest year-to-date statistics. As I’ve said previously, our market—like many markets throughout the US—has slowed down just a little bit, and prices have leveled off as well. Island-wide, sales are down 10.7%, and the volume of those sales decreased by 24% from $612 million to $463 million. The median sale price of single-family homes, meanwhile, dropped 12% from $732,000 to $642,000. Because this statistic represents the middle of the market, though, it can be influenced by a small number of transactions. As we delve further into the latest numbers, we see more revealing data. Market prices have been rising since 2014, and right now we have a lot of properties listed at or near the top of the market. There’s still robust activity going on, but that’s not the case in the luxury markets. In the North Shore, for example, sales are down 32%, and the volume of those sales dropped 65%. As I’ve mentioned before, this could be because there weren’t enough multi-million dollar home sales during the first six months of the year. In general, though, because prices are highest in the North Shore and appreciate the most, it’s normal for conditions to stagnate. “Our market—like many markets throughout the US—has slowed down just a little bit, and prices have leveled off as well.” If you’re a seller, it’s still a good time to get your property sold, but a global event like a trade war with China will have an immediate impact on our market. In the more affordable areas of our market, such as the east side of the island, year-to-date sales are up 13.25%, the volume of those sales is up 24%. This is where more affordable homes are located, so there will naturally be more transactions. Demand is still strong, and prices are still inching upward. The number of active listings has remained fairly consistent. As of the recording of this video, there are 644 homes on the market and 235 properties under contract. A significant number of properties under contract come from two specific projects: the PiliMai luxury air-conditioned townhomes in Poipu (38) and Ho’oluana development by DR Horton (13). If you have any questions about any of these statistics or the future of our Kauai market or you’re thinking of buying or selling a home soon, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to help you.

Famous chefs don’t become known because of their humility. But as it turns out, their restaurants might. In this episode of the podcast, I spoke with renowned chef Peter Merriman about his unique approach to hospitality in his restaurants. Why is it that a person always feels welcome when they check-in with his hosts? How does Peter motivate his entire staff to entertain like they are “throwing a party every night,” prepare each and every dish like they are “cooking for their mom,” and consistently go above and beyond to “do the right thing” for every customer they meet? In this episode, we discuss: Why service matters as much (if not more) than the food What are his “vital few” that he focuses on with staff? The key importance of establishing and maintaining relationships How Peter hires right, then gives his people a chance to shine What it means to focus on the “internal customers” How those who are served can get the most out of our experience as customers The importance of sustainability, and connecting with the source of our food How customer demand impacts quality The importance of humility to the success of any restaurant Thanks for listening! Known as the original “locavore”, Peter is a vocal champion of Hawaii’s farmers, ranchers and fishermen. His restaurants showcase island grown and harvested foods through simple preparations that reflect the myriad flavors of Hawaii’s multiculturalism. Dubbed the “Pied Piper of Hawaii Regional Cuisine” by The Los Angeles Times, he is a continuing inspiration to Hawaii’s thriving culinary scene. Early Years Peter was raised in Pittsburgh, where a passion for food was instilled in him from a young age. His mother, Woodene, was a noted Pittsburgh Post Gazette food writer, and by the time he was 16, he was doing “grunt work” for Master Chef Ferdinand Metz at the H. J. Heinz Co. (Chef Metz later headed the renowned Culinary Institute of America.) Pursuing the opportunity to play football, Peter attended The University of Pennsylvania and studied Political Science. After graduation, Merriman enrolled in a three-year Chef's Apprentice Program with RockResorts under the auspices of the American Culinary Federation. The apprenticeship program took Peter to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and to Woodstock, Vermont, where he studied at the Woodstock Inn, under the supervision of Chef Hans Schadler. He then went on to various stints in resort areas across the United States and Europe, including a summer working among the vineyards of France’s Champagne region. In early 1983, Peter was hired as a cook for the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. He arrived in Hawaii with one suitcase and $75 in his pocket thinking he would stay a few months at the most. But he fell in love with the natural beauty of the islands and the rich culture of the people who live there. In 1985, only two years after his arrival, he was appointed Executive Chef of the Mauna Lani Resort’s new Gallery Restaurant. Chef & Pioneer of Hawaii Regional Cuisine At his interview for the chef position at The Gallery Restaurant, Peter was asked what type of food he wanted to feature. Without thinking, he said “regional cuisine” and went on to explain how no other restaurants were serving the local fish and produce. Peter believed that to be able to offer fish that was caught the same morning and to use vegetables harvested the day that they were served was essential to providing the best gourmet Hawaii cuisine. When Peter got the job, he had to deliver on the concept, but quickly discovered there were almost no local products available. Peter advertised in the newspapers and went out to the farms, ranches and docks to let local producers know he wanted whatever they had. “We’re in this together,” he told them, “If you grow it or catch it, I’ll buy it, and we all succeed.” Pretty soon he had built solid partnerships and local producers would try to get or grow whatever he needed. As he began recruiting other chefs to focus on local foods, “Hawaii Regional Cuisine” was born with Peter as founding president. Peter says it was just the right thing to do. “We were able to serve the freshest, most flavorful food at the restaurant. The bonus is that it benefits the local economy while helping to preserve the land and the agrarian way of life. Merriman’s Restaurants In 1988, Peter opened his signature upcountry restaurant, Merriman’s, in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii. He was proclaimed, "A gourmet in cowboy country" by Hana Hou!, the Magazine of Hawaiian Airlines. The New York Times raved “Everything at Merriman’s…features the freshest local ingredients paired in exciting ways,” and San Francisco Magazine exclaimed “His Wok-charred Ahi is to die for!” It was at Merriman’s Waimea that Peter garnered the attention of the James Beard Foundation and as a result, he was a Finalist in the “Best Chef Northwest & Hawaii” category three distinct times. In 1994, Peter partnered with TS Restaurants to open Hula Grill on Maui’s famed Ka`anapali Beach. Hula Grill, touted “the best fish house in the islands” by Honolulu Magazine, brought the concepts of Hawaii Regional Cuisine to a beachside setting. Two more fine dining restaurants were added to the Merriman’s Hawaii group in 2008 and 2009 - Merriman’s Kapalua, on the grounds of the scenic resort on Maui’s West Side, and Merriman’s Fish House in Poipu, Kauai. Downstairs from the fish house, Peter offers casual dining at Merriman’s Gourmet Pizza & Burgers. In June 2018, Merriman’s Hawaii Group opened for the first time on Oahu, bringing Merriman’s Kaka’ako to Ward Village by Howard Hughes. In 2011, Peter launched a new venture in casual dining, Handcrafted Restaurants, with restaurateur Bill Terry. Handcrafted Restaurants is a multi-concept restaurant company operating four restaurants across the Hawaiian Islands: Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman in Wailea and Ka’anapali, Maui and Ko Olina Oahu, Moku Kitchen in Kaka’ako, Oahu, and the Beach House in Poipu, Kauai.

(Hey Andy i think i mispronounced your name several times I'm sorry but i stay dyslexic but still love you) Here are the show notes Aloha and welcome back to Hawaii Posts Hawaii’s only weekly update for weather surf and island events I’m your host Tom e Gaupp a.k.a. Tom e Stokes It’s good to be back and i thank you for staying tuned and staying stoked. In this our 11th episode we have our 777 followed by in interview with Michael Miller a new board member with the Hawaii Food Bank and we will close out the show with a few songs from our events featured artist The month of october was a wild month and I actually made a podcast for the first 2 months but fell short of posting it on my way to the airport. I was in Japan for a few weeks with my family while at Tokyo Disneyland nearly collapsed from abdominal pain, I thought it was just kidney stones but upon the insistence of my wife and father inlay i was taken to the emergency room and diagnosed with acute kidney infection, Pyelonephritis, caused by passing massive kidney stones that caused tearing in the ureter which is the tube between the kidney and the bladder. I was admitted to Mishima hospital for 7 days. It was pretty serious, my blood test revealed deadly levels of bacteria and high white blood cell count. The doctor braced me to prepare for the worse but hope for the best. I was on the verge of sepsis or septicemia which is a blood infection which could lead to septic shock which has a 50% mortality rate. Dr. Suzuki and Dr. Okubo and the whole staff at Mishima Hospital worked hard to heal me and by the grace of God i was cured in 5 days. But its a long road to recovery. It was pretty scary at first, being in a foreign land far from home. My Japanese is pretty limited but i am always trying to learn more and improve my japanese vocabulary. I speak survival japanese I can from greeting to and direction i talk about the weather, food and nod politely but i needed to communicate with the medical staff at the hospital if i wanted tell them how i felt and what i needed or just wanted to know what was going on inside my body. While in the hospital i used google translator app to converse with the doctors, nurses, pharmacist food service and staff. I am blessed to have a loving wife with caring in-laws. Both my mother and father inlaws came to my room several times to check in on me and bring me some much need snack and my favorite VitaC1000 dinks. My wife had to travel on with my boys, because the trip was for my kids and a chance for my wife to visit the grave sites of her recently deceased. Hospitals are no place for kids to hang out so off to Legoland and Kyoto they went. It’s safe to say that most of you may never spend a single day in a Hospital but let me tell you. The staff is so kind and caring the facilities are clean and well managed and the food, i ate everything they served me and enjoyed every bit of it. I tried new foods that prior to my stay in the hospital, might have otherwise passed up for the more popular japanese food such as my go-to sushi plates and udon noodles. But in the Mishima Hospital the dishes were more like japanese country cuisine bamboo shoots, nabe, wide varieties of fish, salads and side dishes. Needless to say after my first two days as i started to regain my health i ate very well. Fortunately i still have my mother and father in my life. My Dad sends my a prayer book from “Today” every two moths, i found it interesting that the first night in the hospital the lesson and prayer was titled “The Stone”. My mom is a retired nurse form the Ohio State University hospital and she is my personal medical assistant always there to help me understand what is wrong with me my wife or kids. She offered insight and loving comfort which was greatly needed at that time Laying in my hospital bed It game me plenty of time to think about my life, loved ones and the direction i would wish to proceed. I busted out some sophmorish artwork to keep up with my 4Buckeyes comic strip (learning that i can’t draw very well and i miss my computer to generate clean graphics and much better text … because my handwriting is worse than my 4 y.o. son) As Sinatra would sing in the standard “My Way”, “Regrets i have a few but then again too few to mention”. I decided that i would confess to this audience and anyone there after that i am not perfect, that i have said and done things that i wish i could take back or do again with a little more love in my heart. I resolved to be a better person every day and practice the golden rule of doing unto others as i would have them do unto me. I asked god for forgiveness, a chance to heal and the strength improve upon my life every day after. I was scared so reached out to my friend and family asking for their thoughts and prayers, something i never have done before but in the darkness of my hospital room thousands of miles from home, i cried in pain and was overwhelmed with sorrow and guilt wanting to be a better husband, father, son and friend to all. With great delight i received the thoughts and prayers from those i asked. It built up my spirit and health. Let me tell you Humility and Prayer works. Remarkably i was healed faster than 7 days the doctor predicted, I was discharged after 5 days and got to re-join my family and travel on to Osaka. Still weak and sore and irritable i realized that changing my was would take time tobe the better person i desire to be. I thank God, my family, friends and the entire staff at Mishima Hospital. Dr. Suzuki, Dr. Okubo, Then nurses Hitomi, Nagisa, Yuka, Yutom, Kaho, Yuka, Azumi, Tomoko. The food service staff Kotomi and Mieko. The pharmacist Yuichi Naito I have a few check ups with my doctor and urologist coming up in the near future but i am on the road to recovery, feeling better. I have started new exercise routines to strengthen my body mind and spirit. While there are many causes for Kidney Stones, Hydration may be the best prevention flushing your system of Oxalate excessive vitamin D or protein. In the last 10 years i have been drinking lots of water but the fact is my stones have been forming all my life and working in the hot sun as a life guard and surf cameraman over the years may have caused dehydration. I think back to my youth and realize that i didn’t drink enough water, even though i was a swimmer surrounded by water i just didn’t drink enough water. My kids take water to school and refill their bottles while at school. I remember this days in school waiting my turn at the drinking fountain and those friendly taunts and teases while i took my turn drinking “Hey save some for the fish!”. My best advise is stay hydrated. I just wanted to share that with you Now on with the show…… Here is your 7 7 7 forecast for Weather Surf and Events for all of the hawaiian islands 7 Day Weather Currently its 84 and sunny Winds have shifted from the typical NE tradewinds to south east winds with bings with it a little more humidity, vog and a good chance of epic sunsets. Mark and Yeni #TBT Discover amazing new things to do in Kauai, all the resorts and adventures to embark on, and relax by the water with a coconut in hand. Mark and Yeni show you how to Travel on your tongue! to Kauai.
#414 - The 1st of 2 episodes from courses in Kauai, Hawaii. Here we meet the Director of Golf from Poipu Bay Golf Course, Craig Sasada. From the “sunny, southern” part of Kauai, Poipu Bay GC hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1997-2006. Here’s one of those great courses that fall in the category of courses from the Tour that is always fun to play but is also not as tough as courses that feature a Major, like Torrey Pines.http://poipubaygolf.comFor more, there's video and photos on our blog at GolfSmarter.comPart 2 is a Members Only episode that focuses on Kaui Lagoons Golf Club in Lihue, which is located on the coast in the middle of the island.
Let's take a look at some of the sights around the island of Kauai starting in Waimea Town and going all the way to the end of the road at the base of the Napali cliffs on the north shore of the island where the road dead ends at Ke'e beach park. First is a tour of the beach cottage where I stayed in Waimea Town. Check out Inn Waimea at www.innwaimea.com. The cottage was three houses from the beach and you could hear the surf in the living room at night. The Captain Cook monument is also located in Waimea. Between Waimea and Poipu are the salt ponds which stand as a testiment to the old ways of deriving salt from the sea. In Poipu along the crags of the volcanic shore the sea enters following a tube up to the surface. The water pushes the air forcefully expelling it with a whistle and a whoosh! The Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge houses a lighthouse used to guide the ships at sea and is home to a number of birds including the red-footed boobie, Laysan Albatross and wedge-tailed shears. The lighthouse was decomissioned in 1976 to be replaced by automated beacons. Lastly we travel as far as we can on State Highway 560 stopping at the wet and dry caves before arriving at Ke'e Beach. Hope you enjoy!
