Learn how St. Porphyrios responded to seeing women dressed immodestly and to his spiritual children who were a bit judgmental. A reading of two accounts translated from the Greek: https://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2012/07/elder-porphyrios-and-scantily-clothed.html Source: Ἀνθολόγιο Συμβουλῶν Γέροντος Πορφυρίου, p. 168, 169. ⛪ FIND an Orthodox parish and monastery near you: https://orthodox-world.org/ https://orthodoxyinamerica.org/ _______ *The Girl With the "Super Mini Skirt" Has a Wonderful Soul!* Years ago, when the Elder served at the Polyclinic of Athens, while walking in the area of Omonoia one day with two girls who were his spiritual children, he saw from across the street a young woman coming with a sexy appearance. She was wearing the familiar "super mini skirt" which was fashionable. When they saw her, the Elder said: "What do you have to say? What are you thinking? Are you judging that woman?" "No, Elder", they responded, understanding their position. "You do well to not judge her", said the Elder. "Do not judge people from their outward appearance. That girl you see has a wonderful soul! She has a dynamic soul. That which she is doing now, that is, provoking, is due to the strength of her soul. Imagine what would happen if that girl came to know Christ, and knew everything that you knew. Then she will certainly reach a high place." This was the way Fr. Porphyrios counseled and taught. He guided through life and experience. *They Came to the Elder With Indecent Clothing* One day, when I went to the Elder, he met with some girls who had come to see him. However, they were dressed indecently. Elder Porphyrios chatted with them on various spiritual topics, but he made no comment regarding their appearance. I, admittedly, was internally indignant with these girls, who went to such a holy Elder dressed in this way, and I was scandalized by the fact that Elder Porphyrios did not make any observations. When the girls left, he said to me, smiling: "Mr. (so and so), I am not as strict as you are." Of course, I knew immediately that he had captured my thoughts and scandalization. But I asked him: "Why do you say that, Elder?" He then said: "Those girls came here with that appearance and I did not make a comment. I have another tactic. Because, even if I did talk about their appearance, since they have no faith in Christ, they would not comply. I first attempted to bring them to faith in Christ, and then, by themselves, they will understand their error and correct it." _______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. Have you ever found yourself mindlessly scrolling through your phone, only to realize you've lost precious time you could have spent with your family? Do you notice a difference between your digital habits and those of your teenagers? JENNIE KETCHAM CROOKS is the founder of the West Coast Anxiety Clinic, a clinical licensed social worker, and an anxiety and OCD specialist. Prior to starting the West Coast Anxiety Clinic, she was the Director of Clinical Education at Seattle Anxiety Specialists and before that, the lead medical social worker at the Polyclinic. Jennie has been involved in research at the University of Washington, a guest lecturer at Harvard University, and appeared on a number of popular television shows from Headline News and The View to Oprah. Jennie is the author of LOOK UP The 30-Day Path to Digital Minimalism and Real Life Maximalism. In this episode we discuss how digital habits are formed and how they can often lead to overconsumption and mental health issues like anxiety. Jenny shares her personal story of missing her daughter's first steps because of being absorbed in her phone, highlighting how easy it is to fall into this trap. The conversation covers practical strategies to identify and change these habits, emphasizing the importance of modeling positive behavior for our children. They also explore how digital overuse can prevent us from experiencing meaningful connections and real-world activities. Finally, they address the critical need for downtime and boredom to allow our brains to rest and recharge. Here are 3 practical takeaways. Set Boundaries with Digital Devices: Establish clear boundaries for when and where digital devices can be used. For example, consider creating phone-free zones in your home, such as the dinner table or bedrooms. This helps to foster more meaningful interactions and ensures that digital consumption doesn't interfere with quality family time. Model Healthy Digital Habits: Your children are watching and learning from your behavior. Make a conscious effort to demonstrate healthy digital habits, such as limiting screen time, prioritizing face-to-face interactions, and choosing real-world activities over digital ones. This sets a positive example for your kids to follow. Prioritize Self-Care and Real-World Connections: Take care of your own needs by scheduling regular self-care activities that do not involve screens. This could include hobbies, exercise, or socializing with friends in person. By fulfilling your own needs outside of the digital world, you'll be less likely to rely on your phone for comfort and more present for your family. The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs continues to note an increase in the number of persons presenting with flu-like illnesses at the Emergency Departments, Wellness Centers and private doctors' offices. This is due to new COVID-19 variants, Influenza A and B and Respiratory Syncytial Virus. Over the last 14 days, an increase in hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19 were also noted. During the period January 15-25, 2024 three COVID-19 deaths were recorded. The elderly, persons with chronic health conditions and the unvaccinated are most affected at this time. The Ministry of Health has begun preparation in the event that cases continue to increase. The hospitals are on alert to ensure supplies, equipment and medication is available. PCR and rapid testing are available free of charge to the public at the various Wellness Centers and Community Hospitals and Polyclinic. The regional public health agencies are working to source and supply the region with the necessary vaccines. The public is encouraged to reduce the impact of respiratory illnesses by the following measures: · Maintain a healthy lifestyle, through diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, reduced stress and toxic habits · Ensure compliance by taking prescribed medication if you suffer from any chronic health conditions · Strengthen sanitary measures at home and work and maintain proper hand hygiene with regular hand washing · Wear a face mask when presenting flu like symptoms · Consult a healthcare professional if flu like symptoms linger or worsen All persons with chronic health conditions are strongly advised to wear a facemask when in public, in crowded conditions, and avoid contact with others who are sick. Personal responsibility is important at this time. Facemasks are available at all the public health facilities to patients who may need. General updated guidelines have been prepared for all of the main agencies. The Ministry of Health reminds the general public that we are presently in the flu season which runs from October to March and as such, would like to encourage the use of the flu vaccine which is available free of charge at the various wellness centers. Vision happens where the brain meets the eyes. A stroke in a particular location can break that system. Even though the eyes may work perfectly, a survivor may not be able to see. Neuro-Ophthalmologists like Dr. Eugene May navigate this world and not only treat folks with neurological conditions but often discover neurological causes to mysterious vision ailments. Bio Dr. May was born in New Orleans and completed his undergrad work at Tulane University. He later graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his post graduate training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Since 1992, he's treated patients in Western Washington at Madigan Army Medical Center, The Polyclinic, Neuro-Opthalmic Consultants Northwest, and Swedish Medical System, where he currently practices. He describes his Philosophy of Care as: Neuro-ophthalmology is the field of medicine that bridges neurology and ophthalmology. I see patients whose visual symptoms are or may be due to neurologic problems. Many patients with multiple sclerosis have vision problems, so a big part of my practice is dedicated to helping them understand what is causing their vision problem and what can be done to address it. I also have a special interest in diagnosis and treatment of neurologic vestibular disorders. Patients with neurologic vestibular disorders have vertigo, dizziness and imbalance. They frequently have seen multiple providers before coming to me for an explanation of their symptoms. My goal is to diagnose and treat the condition so people feel and function better. Hack of the week Sometimes it's difficult to plug things into my computer or TV, or it's tough to find my glasses when they fall under the bed. The camera on my phone makes it much easier, especially now that my balance and dexterity challenges make it more difficult to get my head into such spaces. I reach around to take a picture of the awkward area. Then I have a better idea of where to reach my hand when I can't quite see.
