There's maybe no better song to appreciate the Hold Steady than "Stevie Nix", track 6 on Separation Sunday. The song hits for the Hold Steady cycle, with hard rock, balladry, howling vocals, sharp lyrics, storytelling, shifting perspectives, and epic songwriting. To break it all down, we have Shawn Westfall, Mike Taylor, and Daniel Shvartsman on the call, as well as Kyle Undem, a special guest making his second appearance on A Positive Jam and repping the Twin Cities to explain why Profane Existence matters so much. Lawwwwd, to be a Hold Steady listener forever. We also have a special contest for this episode, with a chance to win a copy of either Separation Sunday or the Hold Steady's newest album, Open Door Policy. Listen to the intro or check out our twitter account, @shortmanstudios, for details!
Content Warning: Some discussion regarding sexual assault. This time around, Damien chats with an incredibly well-respected member of the DIY punk community! You most likely know Adrienne as the powerful voice behind SPITBOY and occasionally AUS-ROTTEN, or through her columns in MRR and Profane Existence. On this episode, we sit down and chat about life in the East Bay punk scene, Spitboy, tensions between Spitboy and the riot grrrl movement, Tim Yohannan, recording with Steve Albini at his Batcave-esque studio, Aus-Rotten, and the meanest prank a friend ever pulled. Songs Played on this episode: AUS-ROTTEN: isolation or solution SPITBOY: sexism impressed AVAIL: pink houses photo credit: Chris Larson, Slug And Lettuce - www.slugandlettuce.net
On the debut episode of Night of the Livid Punks, Damien sits down with longtime friend, former Profane Existence editor/coordinator, and king of the coffee punx Jeremy Stone. Sit back and relax as Jeremy and Damien chat about self-isolation, punk life, Profane Existence, Minneapolis, having their hearts broken by The Baron, and of course - coffee! And just for fun, hear Jeremy gush about six crucial punk songs that mean a lot to him! Closing song: SPITBOY - "In Your Face"
Perspectives from Iranian Anarchists This week on The Final Straw we feature a chat with a translator of the Anarchist Union of Afghanistan and Iran to share perspectives from membership in Iran and abroad about resistance to the regime from within, solidarity from abroad, the impact of US Sabre-rattling. A transcription of this interview can be found here. A zine formatted version will be available soon. [00:03:58 - 00:59:39] An inspirational movement arose out of the Cold War period among anarchists who found themselves on either side of the international chess-board. In the US this was called Neither East Nor West. The movement published a journal called On Gogol Boulevard, which after 1990, lived as a column in Profane Existence (an anarcho-punk journal), Fifth Estate and other journals. This project seems to have existed for about 15 years, from 1980 to 1994. The Final Straw lost the opportunity a few years ago to interview a New Yorker deeply engaged throughout this project, Bob McGlynn, when he passed away. He was obviously not the only person involved, but sharing his experience and story is a missed opportunity on our part. A link to an article that McGlynn penned about the project will be linked in our show notes. Today, we find ourselves as anarchists in the USA, 20 years into the so-called War On Terror. This war of destabilization has targeted criminalized populations in within the U.S. borders and has had massively violent and deadly consequences across the globe. What we call a War, for lack of a better word, serves to destroy, enslave, maim and kill animals, human and non-human, around the world. And throughout the whole of this 20 year period a constant boogey-man has been that of the Iranian state, whose people have lived under the varying pressure of US-led sanctions. The US war machine hovers close to shifting from it's regional proxy wars and an active war with Iran as the Trump regime's rhetoric and economic policy close around the throats of the Iranian people. In the interest of international solidarity and understanding and the spirit of the Neither East Nor West, we are quite pleased to be having a conversation with people from the Anarchist Union of Afghanistan and Iran. In this conversation we'll be learning about Iranian struggles and what solidarity from the West might look like. We hope that in the future we can talk more about the impact of the 20 years of war on the peoples of Afghanistan perpetrated by the US government and it's allies and the work of anti-authoritarians on the ground. More information from the Union can be found at https://asranarshism.com/ (posts are mostly in Persian), they can be followed on twitter at @asranarshism, @asranarshism on instagram, on Telegram (also mostly in Persian) and fedbook. . ... . .. The date will be February 15th. Currently, events in Santiago and Atlanta GA have signed on and we are waiting for confirmation from Valdivia and Punto Varas. A flyer announcing the international tattoo party is forthcoming with more details on how we can link up the different events. Our first walking tour! Protesters descending on Washington, D.C. to #DisruptJ20 are stepping into a long history of resistance in the belly of the beast. One of the most innovative and powerful cycles of protest in the nation's capital was the movement against corporate globalization in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Most tours of D.C. take you around the monuments and museums downtown, but we want to show you another side of the city—the neighborhoods and DIY spaces from which anarchists launched attacks on capital and where seeds were planted for a new world to take its place. Through historic sites, interviews, and a scrapbook of anti-capitalist mementos, we hope to pass on some of the lessons and inspiration that the anti-globalization movement can offer, especially as a new wave of struggle begins under Trump. {January 9, 2017} -------SHOW NOTES------ We've put together a YouTube version of the walking tour with the photos included at our YouTube channel Anarchist history is not for books you can close and set away on a shelf. Use the lessons and inspiration from this episode to get active. You can start next week with the #DisruptJ20 anti-inaugural activities in DC on January 20th. We discuss and sample multiple documentaries about the mass anti-corporate globalization protests that took place during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Many of these can be found online, like This Is What Democracy Looks Like, Breaking the Spell, Breaking the Bank, The Miami Model, and the highly recommended Crowd Bites Wolf. The excerpt from the A16 Revolutionary Anti-Capitalist Bloc statement came from The Black Bloc Papers, which is a great resource for understanding that part of early 2000s anarchism. We discuss a bunch of different groups in this episode, including the DC Anti-Capitalist Convergence, Positive Force, APOC, Profane Existence, and Indymedia. We’ve seen an uptick in independent and branded small-scale publications—beautiful, limited-edition tomes often with a run that is only in the hundreds. It’s an upscale evolution of DIY zine culture, which saw the proliferation of niche publications like Cometbus, Factsheet Five, and Profane Existence—each one offering a unique perspective on alternative culture. But now brands and high-profile artists are getting in on the action. Kanye West released zines for his two previous Yeezy collections. Frank Ocean created a zine for his latest album, Boys Don’t Cry, which was packed in with a different edit of the record. Nike has made several strides with a slim, substantial tome called On Design, which was limited to just 500 copies and features essays by CEO Mark Parker and works from artist Maria Kalman. It was made to coincide with Milan Design Week. In addition to our own magazine, Highsnobiety recently published our first zine—the cheekily named “Short For Magazine,” featuring behind-the-scenes photos of the Yeezy Season 3 show from staffer Thomas Welch. The ongoing series is meant to be a limited-edition platform to highlight emerging artists, designers, and creatives in a more intimate way. On today’s show, we speak with David Hellqvist. He’s the fashion features editor at PORT magazine, freelance menswear editor, and the publisher of Document Studios. Document partners with brands like Timberland, Spiewak, and adidas to create brand magazines that focus on a unique narrative. The agency’s latest publication, The Gap Document, retells the Gap’s story through the eyes of people like prolific fashion writer Tim Blanks, NEIGHBORHOOD designer Shinsuke Takazawa, and menswear designer Christopher Raeburn, who crafted a one-of-one military jacket in collaboration with The Gap and Document Studios. Rob Fitzpatrick/November 14, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Rob Fitzpatrick. Rob grew up in North Jersey in the 1980s. Upon discovering punk, he came to attending shows at ABCNORIO in the Lower East Side of New York City. There he made friends with Nicole and Janine Enriquez, with whom he formed the band Witch Hunt. Witch Hunt became one of Philadelphia’s most popular political punk bands of recent years. They toured the US and Europe and released several Records, including one on the Profane Existence label and their last on Alternative Tentacles. In the wake of the demise of Witch Hunt, Rob formed the band Sickoids with Vince Klopfenstein, also formerly of Witch Hunt. The stripped-down and furious style of Sickoids coupled with Rob’s distinctive lyrics brought them to great prominence both in Philly and beyond. While the three members of the band no longer call Philly their home, they do still exist as a band. Rob brings a thoughtful and introspective approach to his interview. While shy in nature, he felt comfortable enough to frankly discuss his involvement with these bands the greater hardcore punk scene. Sickoids website The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!
