My Daughter is Playing in the Regional Championship Varsity Football State Playoff Game Tomorrow Night.  Why Not?  A coach who had a huge impact on my life is a man named Von Shepherd.  He touched me in many ways at a window of time when I needed him most.  He taught me several quotes and lines and phrases.  He had a simple two-word question that I remembered today being out on the field at Riverview High School today at the annual Thanksgiving practice.  Von would say to me "Why Not?"   Raising our belief, taking the time to dream, and being inspired by those around us.  And when our kid inspires, it's a whole different story.  Let this podcast be a reminder that a beautiful piece of art doesn't need a description.  Inspiration works the same way.  We need to be open to awe.  Happy Thanksgiving!  Dr. Dan   ------   Dr. Dan is a clinical & sports psychologist, author, and a national speaker on anxiety and neuroscience [for 10 years].  He has worked with olympic training athletes, cross fit National Champions, world champion power lifters, professional baseball players, college swimmers, tennis players, D1 football players, soccer athletes, gymnasts and lots of youth athletes in all kinds of sports. High School Sports have a long history of downtown rivals and this was evident this past week in Riverview Florida. I've had the pleasure of working with both East Bay High School and Riverview High School - both are situated a few miles apart. Before the season started, both teams had their Football Team Pictures and Individual images taken - where the studio was transported to both schools. Historically, the teams would go out to the field sit on bleachers and you're at the mercy of all 80 players ready at once and also the weather cooperating. Both sessions this summer with the teams, it stormed as we were already inside. I'm often asked, what makes our photos different from others. - The answer is simple, we continually focus on ways to create an image that feels top quality and something that could also be present in a magazine or a graphic that you would see on ESPN. The other part of our editing process is, at times not everyone can make photo day. The edits are done, so in the event the unforeseen occcurs and a student misses the session, we can coordinate with the parent and coach a time to get image completed. This happened recently due to an injury, post team photos the parent and student came to the studio and we did their images. I was able to add the student into the team photo before delivery to the team and we didn't miss a beat.

Colonel Ben Knisely grew up in the small town of Osprey, Florida, just a few miles south of here.  He graduated from Riverview High School.  He entered military service following his graduation from the University of South Florida, in Tampa and 28 years later, retired from the US Army at the rank of Colonel.    A couple notable aspects of his career that I would like to share with you in this introduction is that during a tour of duty in Viet Nam, the then, First Lieutenant Ben Knisely, while piloting a UH-1 MEDEVAC helicopter was shot down by an enemy missile in the Ah Shaw Valley over enemy territory and severely wounded in the crash.  He and his co-pilot were listed as MIA in April 1968 and were subsequently rescued by a very highly publicized heroic and daring mission executed by the Army’s famous 101st Airborne Division. The details of the harrowing escape and evasion actions by Lt. Knisely and his copilot, and the subsequent and successful rescue efforts by a small special Operations team was captured in a book  by Peter Dorland, called DUSTOFF 65, published in 1974.  The Infantry Lieutenant, who led the famous and heroic rescue effort directly into the face of the enemy, was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor.  After 9 months of hospitalization, Knisely not only petitioned to stay on active duty, but re-qualified to fly MEDEVAC helicopters, and did so for the remaining years of his Army career…..In his last tour of duty; he served on the special staff of General H. Norman Schwarzkopf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  Ben hides his physical scars of combat well.  Clothing covers the skin disfigurement of his burns, and you will Hardly notice the limp of his prosthetic left ankle and foot, but he admits that he suffers from PTSD, for the haunting dreams of his combat shoot-down event almost 50 years ago still come back now and then, and for that invisible wound, he will be the first to tell you that there is no cure.    Colonel Knisely now lives in Sarasota, Fl.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of a Wounded Warrior organization called Operation Second Chance.  He is also on the Board of Directors of the Sarasota Military Academy, and is the Military and Veterans Liaison Officer for the Sarasota County Sheriffs Office.   His list of military awards and decorations are far too numerous for me to read to you … He is a named member of the elite Order of Dedalions and in 2013 Ben was inducted into the US Army’s Medical Aviation Hall of Fame.

Aquarium keeping is more than just a great hobby. It also teaches valuable lessons about science, nature, and even careers in aquatics! A perfect example of this can be seen at Riverview High School, in Sarasota, FL, where innovators Katrin Rudge and her colleagues use aquarium systems to teach aquaculture, natural resources, engineering, and business. Riverview High School’s Aquascience Program currently enrolls approximately 250-300 students, and their "Stars to Starfish" program is gearing up to educate not only these high schoolers, but hundreds of visiting grade school students as well. My guests today are Katrin Rudge and her students Matt LaVigna, Wes Robertson, Tyler Fushikoshi. Join us, as we discuss aquariums in the classroom at Riverview High School!
