The Best! Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Review

The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD could be the best lens for APS-C cameras ever made. The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD could be the best lens for APS-C cameras ever made. It combines weather-resistance with fast autofocus and a lot of versatility. For the record, it's more or less a 24-120mm f2.8 equivalent zoom. And for any APS-C photographer, that's a dream. To boot, it's also incredibly small for what it is. While it feels fantastic on Sony cameras, some Fujifilm photographers might not necessarily want to use it. However, it's great on both camera systems. This review was updated June 27th 2022. A whole other section was created just for the Fujifilm variant. Pros and Cons Pros Small Weather sealed Under $1,000 Image stabilized Basically a 24-105mm at f2.8 Lightweight Cons Tamron is a beautiful diamond being wasted on the sad Ringpop that is the Sony APS-C camera system. What's Innovative About This? The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is the full-frame equivalent of a 26-105mm f2.8 lens. The depth of field will be around f4.2 in full-frame too. But the light gathering and true aperture will still be f2.8. This is the first time we've ever gotten a lens like this. Add onto all this the vibration compensation, sharp optics, and weather sealing features. Then realize that it's under $1,000. To me, this sounds like a no-brainer. It's a truly usable large range that photographers can use with confidence every day. Sigma has their 18-35mm f1.8 lens, but it's not as useable a range as this Tamron offering. For what it's worth, I think this lens is wasted on E Mount. Everyone fawns over the company's full-frame cameras. It has also come to Fujifilm X series. It could also even make the Nikon Z50 seem more useful. Gear Used We tested the Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD on the Sony a6600. We also used it with Profoto lighting. Tech Specs Specs are taken from AlphaShooters Lens construction: 16 elements in 12 groupsAngle of view (APS-C): 79゜55′-23゜00′Number of diaphragm blades: 9(Rounded diaphragm)Minimum aperture: F22Minimum focusing distance: 0.19m (7.5 in) (WIDE) / 0.39m (15.4 in) (TELE)Maximum magnification ratio: 1:4.8 (WIDE) / 1:5.2 (TELE)Filter size: φ67mmDiameter: 74.6mmLength: 119.3mm (4.7 in)Weight: 525g (18.5oz)Accessories: Flower-shaped hood, Lens caps included Ergonomics The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a moderately sized lens. I say this because it depends a lot on the situation you're in. But overall, it's simple to use thanks to the construction. You can see above that the only controls are a large zoom ring and a small focusing ring. The exterior is made of plastic. However, the lens doesn't feel like a bad, plasticky lens. It's a ways better than anything Rokinon has made. When fully zoomed in, the lens also doesn't become much larger than it is. And that's really great for real-life use. Of course, that also means that it isn't an internally zooming lens. Build Quality Make no mistake; the Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a massive lens for an APS-C camera. But overall, it's still smaller than a Canon 50mm f1.2 RF prime lens. It's also far lighter. The lens is built solidly. It's a plastic body that doesn't feel cheap at all. Tamron is a specialist at constructing lenses like this. There are also nice rubber rings for grip. Of course, this lens is also weather-resistant. We're confident that it will outlast the Sony bodies it was designed for. Overall, this lens is built to be the only one you need. It's lightweight and fairly small. Stuff it into a camera bag slot, and you'll be good to go. Again, Tamron has built one of the most perfect lenses for APS-C cameras. It's again a shame it's being wasted on a format that I don't think sees its future in APS-C. Ease of Use Slap the lens on the camera, point, focus, and shoot. That's all there is to it. The lens has vibration compensation built-in, which translates into better hand-holding at slower shutter speeds. And if you're l...

Why It's Time to Bring Back the Tilt-Shift Lens

The Phoblographer

If you ever experienced photography before Instagram, then you hopefully got to check out the tilt-shift lens. They were used for a variety of things: architecture, landscapes, and surreal work. It's where the idea of miniatures comes from. And almost a decade ago, they were expensive and not used as creatively. These days, the tilt-shift lens is completely missing from various camera systems. And I think that the tilt-shift should make a return, but in a totally different way. You can view this article and much more with minimal banner ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. And for $24.99/year, you can have a banner-ad-free experience. Tilt-shift lenses were all about getting perspectives 100% totally what you want them to be. All of that can be done digitally via post-production these days. But a lot of photographers would rather not have to do it in post-production. After all, what's the fun of photography if you're spending all day behind a computer screen? Manufacturers like to talk about how some of their lenses don't have distortion. And for the most part, a lot of distortion has been eliminated. But it's not perfect still. A tilt-shift lens, medium format, or large format lens can still do things much better and get it right the first time around. “The miniature effect is in essence, using the lens to drastically change the plane of focus by a tilt and/or shift to throw out the area of focus only keeping a small area IN focus.” How a Tilt Shift Lens Works Even so, I don't think that that this is why the tilt-shift lens should come back. Instead, I think that the current landscape of lenses is just seriously lacking in variety. We'd know, we've reviewed more than any other photo publication. Manufacturers also generally work to engineer all the character out of their lenses. These clinical experiments have removed the soul from optics. To that end, we get the perfect metaphorical tacos that still need a lime to be drizzled on them. And this means that a manufacturer doesn't necessarily need to create a tilt-shift lens, but a tilt-shift adapter could possibly work. Even then though, the adapters don't do as good of a job as a dedicated lens. Years ago, we reviewed the Rokinon 24mm tilt-shift lens. And it touched on a very big and important point. Here's a section from that review: “Now a lens like this is built to CORRECT distortion caused by less than ideal perspectives (we can't all shoot from a cherry-picker 20-50 feet in the air all the time). So thankfully with the shift adjustments available on this lens it is quite simple to correct the converging lines of taller buildings or even normal rooms from a higher or lower angle than eye-level.” I'll totally admit that this can be an annoying problem to deal with. But a tilt-shift lens would make sure that I don't have to face it at all. And when I'm done with it for perspective correction, I'll go play with it to create miniatures. If you're sitting here saying, “Chris, you can just do it in post-production,” then you're missing the point. I don't want to do it in post-production. A lot of us don't. We're still in a pandemic that isn't over and people spend way more time in front of screens. We don't need to anymore. We can spend time working with our cameras and getting the photos to be perfect in-camera. Photography is a skill, and we should make it so again. Yes, AI and technology has made the basics easier. But it's up to us now to raise the higher end of skills up since the lower end has also risen up.

Welcome to the Wedding Video Boss Podcast, I am your host, Paul Santiago. It’s episode 6 and we’re talking about the the most commonly used lenses, the best versions (like brands that sell it) and I will reveal the lenses that I love to use! Before the music comes in, here's a quote to put things into perspective..."I see everything through a spiritual lens.” - Katy PerryWait that’s not right… oh here it is…“Different eyes see different things” - From the song, Different strings by RushYour lenses are the eyes of the audience, and different kinds of lenses will show the viewer different things. There are different types of lenses: ultra wide angle (8mm-24mm), wide angle (24mm-35mm), standard (35-50mm), telephoto lenses (85mm to 300mm+++). A prime lens has a fixed focal length, and a zoom lens can go in and out to provide a wider range of focal lengths.Prime lenses have better optics than zooms, they usually can have a wider aperture, which gives them better low-light performance. Although prime lenses can be cheaper, because it less moving parts. Zoom lenses offer more flexibility when you shoot. They say when you’re a beginner, it’s better if you start with zoom lenses and as your skill level progresses you can move to prime lenses. These lenses will offer different looks because of the way its made and the way the glass is positioned. So when you film someone with a 50mm and you film the same subject with a 70-200mm, let’s just say you’ll get either a great review or an email that says, “hey Paul, I was wondering if you have any shots other than the one’s where 90% of my wide face is in it?"You can actually youtube focal length videos on how one subject looks through different lenses. Let me try to find one and post it on the show notes: https://gfycat.com/cooperativepreciouslaughingthrushHere are the most commonly used lenses and their corresponding situations: 35mm f/1.4 - Prep, Establishing shot of pre ceremony, ceremony and reception, detail shots 50mm f/1.8 - (Nifty-Fifty) Romantics, Dancing 85mm f/1.4 - Prep, Detail shots, Dancing 70-200mm f/2.8 - Back camera 100mm f/2.8 - Macro shots After researching, I just realized that the way I film weddings is totally different from the norm. I’m not bragging or anything but I kinda feel relieved because now I know that I can actually share something useful hahaha "You have to kind of be invisible... so you use a longer lens." David Bailey Okay so I film using zoom lenses more than primes. The main reason is that I don’t want to be in the way of a moment when it happens and reason number two is with a zoom lens, I can easily adjust my lens in a split second to grab a particular moment. Well, there’s also reason number three, which was originally number one, which is so that I can adjust if the photographer gets in the way. Now I communicate better with photographers BUT there are still a lot of photographers out there who have no idea what lens to use for a particular situation or have no clue that there’s a videographer filming with them and I’m pretty sure they’re saying the same thing about us videographers. So just be ready for each other and anticipate what lens they’re using. Now that I shared why we use zoom lenses, here’s what we use!Sorry! You need to listen to it to see how I use the lenses :)I have an amazon affiliate list of lenses listed down below! I would advise to rent equipment first before you buy so that you’ll know if it’s right fit for you. It is that time of year, when we chat about the cameras that have been announced in 2018 and toss in some commentary by our in-house experts. We also make time for our favorite new lenses and a few accessories and miscellaneous pieces of gear. At the end of the show, we’ll go around the room and offer our thoughts on each of our favorite cameras from this year. While we already touched upon the new Canon and Nikon mirrorless full-frame cameras in a previous episode, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge these big announcements at the top of the show. Other than these long-awaited announcements, 2018 was a comparatively quiet year for other manufacturers. Sony announced the Alpha a7 III Mirrorless full-frame camera at the beginning of the year, and both the RX100 VA and the RX100 VI; Zeiss has everyone curious about its full-frame ZX1 Digital Camera. Leica put out the Leica Q-P Digital Camera along with M10-D.  Fujifilm bookended its year with two big announcements, the Fujifilm X-H1 in February, and the X-T3 later in the year—and added a few smaller X-series cameras, point-and-shoots, and the Instax SQ6 Taylor Swift Edition along the way. Panasonic announced the Lumix DC-GH5S as the update to the G5, and Olympus released the PEN E-PL9. Several lenses were highlighted during the roundup episode, including the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di RXD Lens for Sony E and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC CN lens. The Zeiss Batis 40mm f/2 CF lens for Sony E also found favor, as did the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM lens and the Rokinon 24mm f/2.8 AF lens.  In addition to cameras and lenses, we spoke about new bags from Lowepro and Peak Design; lights from Luxli and Profoto; tripods by Robus; and the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and the GoPro Hero 7.   This really was an episode full of insightful gear talk, and we discussed a wide range of products; we hope you enjoy and that it will help with any gift-buying decisions you may be making. The L-mount alliance, Nikon Z7, Leica Q-P, Nikon P1000, GoPro Hero7, DJI Mavic 2, Sigma, and Samyang are some of the topics that Marco and Mat discuss on episode #20 of the “We Shoot Mirrorless” podcast for November 2018. This show is sponsored by:   HoneyBook - Win Clients. Book Faster. Get Paid. He was especially impressed by the Panasonic, Leica, and Sigma announcement of the L-Lens Alliance. And he shares his feelings about the performance of his Nikon Z7 camera after testing it for one month.   Nikon Z6 - 24.5MP FF camera B&H: https://bhpho.to/2NvFe97 Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2zUPFgN   Nikon Z7 - 45.7MP FF camera B&H: https://bhpho.to/2wnfIfQ Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2zdnDxx   Canon EOS R B&H: https://bhpho.to/2OCxHWv Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2DIHusv Mirrorless news that is covered on this show:   Leica announced an update to the full frame fixed lens mirrorless Q camera. The 16MP 1 / 2.3” sensor Nikon Coolpix P1000 offers an optical zoom lens with an equivalent field of view of 24-3000mm. Yes, that is 3000 with three zeros! The lens has a starting aperture of f2.8 on the wide side and f8 on the tele-end. The “Black” top model has improved IQ and new Hypersmooth image stabilization. It can shoot at 4k 60fps, has internal WiFi and GPS and some cool features like a TimeWarp that’s a great looking Hyperlapse mode. It should allow you to get great video results even if you don’t have an expensive gimbal to smooth out movement. Now there is a Mavic 2 Pro and a Mavic 2 Zoom. The pro version features a small Hasselblad camera with a 1” sensor and the Zoom has a 2x optical zoom lens plus a 4x digital zoom. Except for the cameras, the two drones are identical with added sensors for all directions collision avoidance and a 3-axis gimbal. The Mavic 2 Zoom offers new features like a dolly zoom and super-resolution mode that expand the possibilities of capturing amazing images with that drone. If you're considering trying some slow travel in Europe with kids, then this is an episode for you. In today's installment of Epic Education Radio, we're talking family travel in Europe, worldschooling, slow travel in Europe and more. ::: Like what you’re hearing? Then please subscribe, rate & review Epic Education Radio. We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! :::   Slow Travel in Europe with Kids Meet the Harrisons. They just spent a year slow traveling in Europe with kids. Henry is a filmmaker and Mel is a writer, and their slow Europe family travel trip took them to 13 countries in the course of 12 months. Their journey started in Florence, Italy. From there, they visited Germany, Scotland, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and many others before returning home to Livingston, Montana in the USA. Family Travel in Europe The Harrison's original family travel plan was to buy an RV and travel in North America. But eventually, their plan evolved into spending one year of slow travel in Europe with their children. Why slow travel in Europe with kids? For Henry, the history of the places they'd visit held a lot of appeal. For Mel, the outdoor opportunities were enticing. They write about both on their blog (link below). Family travel in Europe offers lots of learning experiences for curious families, but it can be expensive as a vacation. Slow travel in Europe with kids also costs more than places like Southeast Asia, but when you slow travel, expenses can drop. Europe with Kids: Apartment Rentals & Destinations How can you make slow travel in Europe with kids less expensive? Stay in apartment rentals instead of hotels. Henry and Mel talk about staying in apartment rentals and talk about what they might take with them next time. Their suggestions may surprise you. For example, one was a knife sharpener. Why a knife sharpener? Because many Airbnb & other apartment rentals in Europe have sub-par cookware. (And not just in Europe, either). Bringing a knife sharpener means that you'll always have a sharp knife in the kitchen. Considering slow travel in Europe with children? If so, then tune in as we discuss homeschooling, the Schengen zone, travel planning and other aspects of slow travel in Europe with kids. Listen up! Canon has recently announced the addition of three new tilt-shift lenses to its lineup, a relatively big deal for a type of lens often considered merely a tool for architecture photography. The truth is that tilt-shift lenses are used in many photographic applications, from landscape to portraiture, and their creative possibilities are limitless. Also, with this release, Canon has expanded the format to include a TS-E 135mm lens, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with perspective-control optics. Using this news as the keystone, we have built an episode of the B&H Photography Podcast around tilt-shift and perspective-control lenses. We discuss the history and general principles of these types of lenses, as well as their common (and not so common) applications. We explain the difference between tilt and shift and address the fact that perspective corrections can now be made in post-production and, despite that, the value that in-camera control offers. We wrap up with an inventory of the many tilt-shift lenses available from B&H, including those from Nikon, Canon, Schneider and Rokinon, as well as those available in the used market and those for medium format cameras. Join us for this informative discussion and let us know about your most valued tilt-shift lens and what you photograph with it. Guest: Todd Vorenkamp
